How is the battery life? I'm thinking about getting one for email - this MacBook Pro runs too hot! - Patrick Lightbody
I don't know yet. Currently it says "3:20 hours (82%) remaining". Typing is definitely a little harder, and the track pad is over eager about selecting text. - Paul Buchheit
Also, I found that windows paint can take pictures, but for some reason they are much darker than the preview image. I can't figure out how to make it take a picture with reasonable brightness. - Paul Buchheit

anyone asked her to explain those big old dinosaur fossils and carbon dating etc? there's quite a lot of science you have to deny to be a fundamentalist. - Alex Gawley
The problem is that nowhere does Palin ever state that she doesn't believe in evolution that I have seen. In fact, she fully supports the teaching of evolution in schools and does NOT feel that creationism is needed as part of the curriculum. Her father was a science teacher by trade and DID, in fact, teach evolution in his classes. In short- this silly little rumor / smear has no basis. As usual. - Soulhuntre
evolution and creationism are not mutually exclusive - Jeff Quinton
12 years in the US and it still shocks me that this is a debatable issue. - Deepak
149 years after Origin of Species and it still shocks me that this is a debatable issue. - £ogical €xtremes
Jeff, creationism usually implies that life was put on Earth in its present forms. That IS mutually exclusive with the science of evolution. - £ogical €xtremes
This comes from science teachers not effectively explaining the modern synthetic theory of evolution (joining genetics, cell biology, and others) as an explanation bridging observations and providing a platform for further studies. Scientific theories are accepted, rejected through new data, or modified. Beliefs have nothing to do with theories. - LPH™
evolution is only a temporary interpretation of reality, it will be replaced someday .. having a continually expanding understanding is ultimately more attractive than even the best theories ... already there are exceptions to gene theory showing up ... - Gregory Lent
@Gregory scientific theories can be replaced... by other scientific theories. Creationism is not science because there is no falsifiable theory. It does not belong in science classes. If the school teaches a philosophy or comparative religion class, then that's an appropriate area, but not science class. - Jason Carreira
hi jason, "creationism" is the name of a mental disease that has just not been named yet .. - Gregory Lent
@Jeff: what?!??!? - Ashwin Bharambe
did you read what Soulhuntre wrote above? how partisan can you jerks be? you just ignored a very relevant point. frustrating. you complain about an open mind... but it is your minds who are closed because you like to mythologize someone you fear. ...worse then little middle school kids. Soulhuntre thankyou for clarifying this! - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
Wanting to teach creationism in science class = unacceptable. Wanting to ban books from the library = unacceptable. Whether she mouths the words of accepting evolution is beside the point. - Jason Carreira
Why is it that anyone who questions evolution is immediately labeled an ignoramus with no understanding of science? I'm an engineer - a scientist in a sense - and believe in Creationism. It can be as easily reconciled to empirical science as evolutionism. At least it presents a solution to first cause. Now before you blast me, answer me, how do you justify an unwavering acceptance of uniformitarianism (for that is what evolution is built on)? - klecu
First, @Soulhunter, where is it saying that Palin supports teaching of evolution in schools? If that is true, is this all nothing but hype vilifying her? Second, creationism is what Church, deriving from the Bible, preached. However, end of 19th century, due to overwhelming evidence from Darwin & Co, an emergence of what became later known as "natural theology" came to being, molding the then science and theology into one. - Hayk
@klecu, by uniformitarianism do you mean Hutton's theory that Darwin's mentor Lyell adopted? - Hayk
I don't know the proponents of the methodology, but it's a basic concept: assume that things have always happened in the same way and at the same rate as we see them happening now. It seems to be key to many dating methods that support a very very old earth. However, there is reason to question this assumption, because even in our own time we've seen natural events that dramatically change the rate of natural processes - events such as volcanoes, floods, storms, and so forth - klecu
@klecu, so it is what i thought then. uniformitarianism as you meant it is one of the basic principles of modern geology, the observation that fundamentally the same geological processes that operate today also operated in the distant past. it advocates gradual formation of rocks etc on the earth. back in 19th century religioin and uniformitarianism had hard time reconciling. Currently however most mainstream scientists support uniformitarianism as do most mainstream religious denominations. - Hayk
i m not at all a specialist in this but i think things didnt change. Formation of things is still graduall and accumulative. What changed recently is the amount and significance of human intervention, by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, killing and destroying of animal and natural habitat and of course we shouldnt forget that after uniformitarianism theory there was also discovery of plate tectonics, which explains changes on the surface of the Earth - volcanic activities, earthquakes, etc. - Hayk
A lot of people don't believe in evolution, it's just the best explanation we have at the moment. It's not perfect as a theory, but it fits the facts a lot better than creationism - Slippy Lane
which is why it is so important to teach knowledge, Slippy Lane and not just the latest fashion. I happen to not be a creationist, but I think it is important for people to know the details of what the bible says. This does not destroy the schism between church and state. Believe me (as a Jew), the separation between church and state is important for me..., also as a Jew it is hard to refute details of Christian doctrine when one is ignorant of it. - AnotherⓃⓄⒶⒽ
Until we can look prior to the Big Bang and see beyond the boundaries of the outermost container (what holds the Universe?), God is as reasonable an explanation as any. Perhaps those barriers are impenetrable for a reason... - Craig Eddy
Unfortunately, Craig, we're talking about the creationist theory of life versus the evolution theory. God is NOT a reasonable explanation, in my opinion, and the theory of evolution has a lot more evidence to support it than the creationist theory of "god made it all just as we see it now." - Slippy Lane
What several people in this thread are missing is this: It's a SCIENCE class. Science has a specific meaning, and scientific theories are rigidly defined... It's not just any old idea that pops into your head. Creationism is NOT a scientific theory. It has no place in science class. Evolution is a scientific theory, and one that has over a century of experimental evidence supporting it, despite vigorous attacks on it from religious organizations. It's as well tested a scientific theory as there is. - Jason Carreira
If the school teaches a philosophy or comparative religion class (which covers MANY religions and creation myths, not just the Christian) then that's a fine place to discuss Creationism and even its relationship to Evolution. Creationism does NOT belong in science class, any more than it belongs in English class or Math class. - Jason Carreira
Jason - not sure who that was directed at, but I for one was aware of that point as a very similar discussion has been prevalent in the UK media in the last week. - Slippy Lane
All I have to say is that people should keep their "faith" out of my schools. People are free to believe whatever they want, but unless it has scientific reasoning to back it up, it does not belong in school. That is, unless it's an elective theology class or philosophy. - Vince DeGeorge
These are strong words: Sarah Palin is "the undoing of everything America has ever tried to be." - Clare Dibble
+1 Clare. Strong but true words. It's not just America, it's basically a portion of the population that wants to roll back the changes from The Enlightenment and move back to a Middle Ages level of ignorance. - Jason Carreira

What would you want from a Facebook for companies? (what value would it provide?) - Paul Buchheit
Employees can network with customers on a company-owned platform as opposed to Facebook. Right now, employees have to use Facebook/apps to mingle with customers externally. Again, this only may apply to large companies, bug Ning is the closest thing to it already. - Elias Torres
I think FB for companies would be pretty useful... you could post status updates much like twitter, use the posted items / notes feature to post design documents / links to demos and such and profiles to look up phone numbers/emails and maybe even use pages as project pages. It would be internal groups, moma, basic wiki and twitter rolled into one... The news feed could also be tweaked on a per company basis to be pretty useful. - Bindu Reddy
I'd like the opportunity to pet my manager's (fluff)Friend for extra brownie points. - Gary Burd
he he... one could build all sorts of silly apps. What a great way to spend your 20% time - Bindu Reddy
linkedin feels like a facebook for companies - Pascal
Well linkedin is more of a resume-networking site... Not sure that would be the same as having an internal version of FB. - Bindu Reddy
*Like* the idea, *dislike* the implication that crap^H^H^H^Hsilly apps are a good use of 20% time. - Tudor Bosman
for me, facebook for companies is an app that sits on top of (in?) my corp email and contacts and tell me all about the network i already spend so much time cultivating. xobni, but on serious performance enhancing drugs (think of a network that implicitly know not only who you know but what it is - contextually - that connects you) - Alex Gawley

It does look nice. A "photo view" was one of the things we always wanted to add to Gmail, but of course didn't :(. Email clients are a tough business though. I predict that there will never be another successful desktop client (other than future versions of Outlook of course). - Paul Buchheit

@Paul - how do you define successful? I got my parents to use Thunderbird, which I see as a success. Personally I use Kmail on Linux, and Apple's Mail. Kmail is my favorite of the two, because it is highly configurable. - Robert Felty
Everybody gets a nice photo view, regardless of mail client, if you send updates out via my site: http://ourdoings.com/ - Bruce Lewis via fftogo
Rob, by successful I meant large numbers (millions) of people using them. There will continue to be a large number of niche clients, and some people will keep using elm even though mutt is completely superior, but none of them will get large userbases. - Paul Buchheit
@paul - have you seen xoopit? - Alex Gawley
Just put my email in the beta signup to see more. - Stephan Miller via fftogo
paul - as someone mentioned, xoopit does a v cool image view (and much more) on top of Gmail. My company includes an image view (attachment explorer) as part of our ClearContext Personal product for Outlook users. - Deva Hazarika
i'm not sure if there will or won't be another successful desktop client, but if there is, it will come from getting traction on some other axis first, and then leveraging that success into an email client. hybrid clients like zimbra and online clients like zenbe show a hint at the future. - Deva Hazarika
