Think the question should be why does CNN's iReport post raw stories from anyone without any editor review whatsoever to a highly visible website? This medium (the Internet) is way too fast for that. Hopefully, it will serve as a lesson to the hundreds of other news organizations recruiting citizen journalists. It wasn't 'hot media'. It was wrong. - Charlie Anzman
The real question is, why aren't people distinguishing the difference between citizen journalism and 'real' journalism - even with the "CNN" stamp. - Mona N.
@mona CNN's site was pretty clear about that. What should happen is he should get a trial and be judged and if convicted, punished according to the law. - ·[▪_▪]·
No, he shouldn't. The site is waht it is. Citizen journalism. One is free to say whatever he wants. It's up to the people to decipher if the source is credible or not. :) - Mona N.
@mona there are laws against market manipulation. If he (or accomplices) did it for gain in the market, it's illegal and he must be tried. If they can't prove anyone gained, he's just a douche. - ·[▪_▪]·
Right, so the next step is finding out if the culprit started the rumor to drive Apple's stock down or if that individual wanted attention. It's too early to make that call but still, the fact remains, why are we letting uncredible sources manipulate us? - Mona N.
Because people are greedy and want to get the jump on others. Oh, i guess i edited myself, i thought i said in a prior comment: If people want to speculate on unsubstantiated rumor, let them suffer. Anyone that will jump to conclusions based on such content, it is at their own risk. Hell, even the news gets it wrong. If you make rash decisions, they're risky decisions and the risk is on your shoulders. - ·[▪_▪]·
NiceRobot: My point is, why are we (the public) enabling uncredible sources to drive a major corporation's stock down 10%. It's time we (as a nation) THINK. - Mona N.
It's not the nation making the decision. It's greedy individuals that want to get a jump on people and price. As soon as a rumor like that gets into the wild, people will act on it in the hopes that they'll profit and as more people act on the rumor, it drives down the price. Most of the people that did it lost the gamble and the stock recovered from the rumor. It's the market working as it should. It's sort of the same as when someone upgrades or downgrades a company. - ·[▪_▪]·
Dude - why are we (the people) granting those 'greedy individuals' that much power?? The last time I checked, there are a lot more of us, than them. - Mona N.
OK you guys had a pretty good go at it but my guess is the 'average' Internet user isn't going to distinguish between the two WITH the CNN stamp on it ... Reuters approach and Blogburst's approach is much better. No filters .. just a fact check - Charlie Anzman
So you're saying, it's CNN's fault the 'average' Internet users can't distinguish the difference? - Mona N.
I'm not sure what you're getting at, Mona. Are you suggesting that all people who post on public websites should have their content vetted by an editor? That would tend to slow down things on FF a bit. - You Betcha Glen Campbell
Though I have to admit there's certain content on this page right now that I wish HAD gone through an editor.... - You Betcha Glen Campbell
Nope. I'm saying CNN should either check the stuff quickly first OR put a reasonable disclaimer and / or explanation at the top of the iReport page and all the CNN.com graphics linking to it. You were the one that checked me on it right here Mona but you were one of only a few running around saying 'stop spreading this'. That shouldn't be necessary. Story went world wide as quasi-fact. When you open the door, a few crazys are always going to walk in - Charlie Anzman
The site is waht it is. Citizen journalism. One is free to say whatever he wants. It's up to the people to decipher if the source is credible or not. :) - You (edit | delete) <--taken from my comment above, Glen. :) @Charlie: No where on that site does it say "CNN". It says "appeared on CNN", which means two separate things... - Mona N.
Glen - We can control what we see on FF. Doubt CNN wants to lose ANYONE - Charlie Anzman
I honestly wasn't familiar with ireport.com before yesterday. But it seems much more useless than, say, Digg, or any of the other sites where people tend to blather on. Much more opinion than actual news. - You Betcha Glen Campbell
Glen: It's WORSE than digg. - shudder - - Mona N.
@mona we aren't granting greedy people power. We give the market the power and pass laws against manipulating it. We all control the market. People that will act on unsubstantiated rumor are being greedy and will lose the moment the rumor is disproven. It's a market working as it should. @Charlie i read CNN has a disclaimer on the site. - ·[▪_▪]·
In this particular instance, Nicerobot, a silly rumor from an uncredible source drove Apple's stock down 10%. Do you really think a law would've prevented that? - Mona N.
Now as for haven't an ongoing conversation with a NiceRobot .... hmm... - Charlie Anzman
Laws often aren't deterrents but just allow us to exact punishment for breaking them. If you sold because the stock was going down, you're playing as risky a game as someone selling because of the rumor. I own AAPL and the rumor didn't affect me at all. The price rebounded 100% from the rumor. Any additional loss was because of the economy. - ·[▪_▪]·
It's about the bigger picture, NR. Do we really need laws to force us to think? - Mona N.
The laws aren't affecting our ability to think. I'm not sure i understand what you're opposed to. Some people are stupid. It'll cause them to try and manipulate others for gain and fail. Though it may cause people to react rashly and lose. The douche might get caught and punished. What they manipulated will rebound on the news of the manipulation. Equilibrium will return. Everyone that stood by will have not been affected. We can't protect ourselves from douch-baggery, only react to it. - ·[▪_▪]·
Like I keep saying: The real question is, why aren't people distinguishing the difference between citizen journalism and 'real' journalism - even with the "CNN" stamp. - You (edit | delete) and because of that, the public spread rumors which resulted in Apple's stock to drop 10% LOL - Mona N.
Unfortunately, the vast amount of people on earth simple do not/cannot make that sort of distinction. They can't tell the difference between search results and "sponsored results" (i.e., ads) on search pages. They can't tell the difference between a newspaper and an advertising flyer. - You Betcha Glen Campbell
My point is, why are we (the public) enabling uncredible sources to drive a major corporation's stock down 10%. It's time we (as a nation) THINK. - You (edit | delete) - Mona N.
The public didn't "allow". The public caused the drop. And there is, to my understanding, a disclaimer on the CNN site stating the content is user submitted, indicating, use at your own risk. What likely happened was someone(s) read the rumor and was an idiot and passed it on as if it were inside information. There's little we can (or should) do about this except punish people if they started the rumor intentionally for gain. - ·[▪_▪]·
Like I keep saying: The real question is, why aren't people distinguishing the difference between citizen journalism and 'real' journalism - even with the "CNN" stamp. - You (edit | delete) and because of that, the public spread rumors which resulted in Apple's stock to drop 10% LOL - You (edit | delete) - Mona N.
Sorry to just copy and paste but I'm getting tired of repeating myself haha. - Mona N.
Isn't a disclaimer of user submitted content enough to distinguish the content as "citizen journalism"? I think CNN did its due diligence. The irresponsibility was on the investors that acted on the rumor. - ·[▪_▪]·
spreading rumours is not journalism. - Andrew Feinberg

Steven - It is a good piece. There are a lot of snake oil salespeople out there trying to sell people 'get rich quick blogging' schemes. With thousands of new blogs each day and discovery becoming easier, it's my humble opinion that, over the next year, many will realize that tying a product or service to your blog is a much easier way to make money from it. If you have the stats (and they continue), seek a sponsor. Most will have a tough go at monetizing - Charlie Anzman

Steven - Another thing I've personally been doing, perhaps not so visibly, is 'losing the fishbowl' and engaging more people outside of the 'Tech News' space and in person. It's opening my eyes to a lot of 'new future web potential'. A generality for now. We'll see. - Charlie Anzman
@Winston - faked ya out huh :) .. oh and thanks - Steven Hodson
@Charlie I have been trying to do the same thing but the only thing it has done for me so far is to prompt me to write posts that aren't overly popular for some silly reason - Steven Hodson

Is there a common theme of problem areas that you are seeing? Curious... - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Robert where are you posting this that your getting such low quality resumes? - Christopher Welle
What's the offer about? - directeur via NoiseRiver
Robert, granted I'm coming in late here, have you thought of maybe hiring an intern from a journalism class? - Christopher Welle
Christopher: Craig's List. It's because it's an administration job. That attracts a group that isn't quite computer savvy or that thinks about how to get attention. Plus, there are a lot of them that are sending attachments and such. - Robert Scoble
I've told friends who own IT Companies that when they advertise for techs on Craigslist they get what they paid for. Any local friends that have a word of mouth person to suggest? - Christopher Welle
Huh? Are attachments now entirely evil? Should CVs be sent in email bodies? I'm not sure I would think that a good idea. I feel the "reading through stacks of piss-poor CVs pain tho). - mattpovey
Christopher: yeah, I'm considering some interns from journalism classes and will be looking for others. - Robert Scoble
I think most people prefer PDF attachments for sending out resumes. I certainly send mine out that way so I can control what it looks like. The cover-letter is actually the more important part sometimes. - Andrew Feinberg
Robert, I think thats a great idea. Hope it works out. - Christopher Welle
Lots of companies are asking for Word Docs. They enter them in their local HR application that index's the information so its search able at that time. - Christopher Welle
I am fully qualified to delete emails en masse (including the ones from b.obama@gmail.com agreeing to your request for an interview). If telecommuting is on the table I'll start Monday, thanks. - Not Not Geoff Schultz
Christopher: why can't companies parse emails? Heck, they should look into what http://www.tripit.com can do with emails (you forward your flight emails to Tripit and it does amazing things with them). - Robert Scoble
The companies I know are really hesitant to change and either one have already spent their money on some expensive custom HR app or are stuck in the package they already bought and don't want to change. Change is bad. - Christopher Welle
I also want to say I don't think the IT depts at these companies are keeping up to date with the latest information or technology. Many of my fellow techs don't have jobs where the companies pay for training or give paid time off for classes. IT is seen as a overhead and to be cut as much as possible. It was refreshing to interview at a company that had a minimum of 2k for training with paid week off to do that training. No Certs necessary that come out of it. - Christopher Welle
You should accept LinkedIn profiles only so you have a standard format to go by - Jesse Stay
You know, that's a great idea for a startup, Robert. Something like tripit where you could send off a resume in email, it could parse it and identify sematic trends (PHP, Javascript, filing, Chinese cooking, etc.) and then allow a much more precise search by employers. You could sell the service to other job-hunting websites, or just set up a competitor. - You Betcha Glen Campbell
GREAT post Robert. I'm horrified by the resumes I receive. I usually post with specific directions on how to apply. That usually screens out 80% of them since they ... don't follow directions. The research and customization is what help them stand out to me. Show me you didn't just cookie-cutter this application. - AJ Kohn
My first post-collegiate boss also had an interesting technique. He only looked at the first page of any resume. Any subsequent pages went into the trash. It was an ad agency and he simply believed that if you couldn't sell yourself in one page ... he didn't need to see any more. - AJ Kohn
AJ: true. In journalism school we were taught to only keep our resumes to one page. If one page is good enough for a Pulitzer prize winning journalist, it's good enough for everyone else. - Robert Scoble
Great post. Some nice advice. - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
i'm not sure why people tell their stories with resumes any more...unless the audience you're sending them to is stuck in the pre-internet past...maybe a bank? - Michael
Question: Is linkedin a substitute for a resume? - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
Roberto, I think LinkedIn is even better than a resume - it gives you recommendations, more detail, and an ongoing history of the individual. - Jesse Stay
i haven't updated my resume since i joined linkedin. i refer all recruiters to my linkedin page. - cjmart
comment on your word 2007 bullet point, did you specify the versions of word the person needs to be familiar with? did you specify you should send your resume in .doc format? also are you saying your administrative assistant shouldn't know and understand word 2007? - Jonathan Jesse
Jonathan: no. But you should never send a document in the latest format. Someone might not be able to open it if you do. - Robert Scoble
Robert, any chance you are looking for an editor? :-) - Holger Eilhard
Very nice post! Bit of a wakeup call for all those complaining they cant get a job. - Gerard van Schip
Going to take these tips into deep consideration when revamping my resume. Need to start firing it out soon. :) - Shawn Farner
AJ & Robert: That is also the way that I was taught that I resume should be. One page in length. - Mathew A. Koeneker
I find craigslist to be very hit or miss on the job seeker side as well. Many times the jobs postings are filled with poor grammar and little information about the opportunity. Employers could use some of the same advice. - Sally Robinson
I'm wondering what the adoption of Word 2007 is out there then? Every client that I have worked with in the last 3 months has already deployed Office 2007. In fact I am receiving Office 2007 docs from some large customers (Fortune 500). Would a Word 2007 doc be better or worse then sending an ODF or somehow sending a link to a Google Doc? - Jonathan Jesse
@Jonathan, our office has deployed Word 2007 but in our department we all set our defaults to save our docs as .doc instead of .docx . Too many of the people we work with don't have Word 2007 and it's just an irritant to negotiate that. The whole thing is just yet another Microsoft headache IMO. - Laura Norvig
Yeah, it's really hard for people to install a quick little patch to let older versions handle the new files. (!) - Jordan Hofker
Jordan: I already have Word 2007 and it sets off red flags to me. Someone who is so careless might be that way with my email. - Robert Scoble

The Decemberists Launch Singles Series | Pitchfork
October 4 at 12:42 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"It's been a whole summer since we've heard from the Decemberists. Besides drummer John Moen's Perhapst project, the last time we checked in with Colin Meloy's Portland crew, they were raising the ire of conservative critics over their appearance at an Obama rally. We're sure those critics are going to love the band's new digital/vinyl singles series, the first installment of which features a tune called "Valerie Plame". According to a press release, "Valerie Plame" is "an amorous tribute to the onetime CIA operative...written from the point-of-view of one of Plame's inside contacts upon discovering her true identity." We'd expect nothing less labyrinthine from the makers of The Crane Wife. Always the Bridesmaid: A Singles Series comes in three volumes. Volume I features "Valerie Plame" and "O New England" and comes out October 14." - Jason Toney via Bookmarklet
Oh, man...I have to send this to Monk! - Lainie
