""If the state's going to create a forum for religion at this time of year, which we do not approve of, this is what's going to happen," said Annie Laurie Gaylor of the Freedom from Religion Foundation."

"Some things never change. Scientists said on Friday they had replicated an experiment in which people obediently delivered painful shocks to others if encouraged to do so by authority figures. Seventy percent of volunteers continued to administer electrical shocks -- or at least they believed they were doing so -- even after an actor claimed they were painful, Jerry Burger of Santa Clara University in California found."

"Under the U.S. Constitution, the states have exclusive and plenary (complete) power to allocate their electoral votes, and may change their state laws concerning the awarding of their electoral votes at any time. Under the National Popular Vote bill, all of the state’s electoral votes would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes—that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538)."

"All patients, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexual orientation, expect that their physicians will give them honest, complete and unbiased information based on their specific health situations. This new HHS regulation places patients' rights directly behind the rights of ideologically-driven physicians and anyone else directly or indirectly involved in their health care. As has been acknowledged by HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt, current law, dating back 30 years, already protects physicians and health care providers who refuse to provide abortions and sterilizations based on religious or moral beliefs. Indeed, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has corroborated that the rule is unnecessary to protect employees and has the potential to create confusion. Nearly every relevant, national medical association has urged Secretary Leavitt to abandon this ill-conceived policy change. Nonetheless, ideology rules the day once again in this administration."

"The court majority said the 1980 Emergency Medical Service Act, which Torti's lawyers cited for protection, was intended only to encourage people to learn first aid and use it in emergencies, not to give Good Samaritans blanket immunity when they act negligently. Van Horn's lawsuit will go on to trial court to determine if Torti is to blame for Van Horn's paralysis."

"With patient access to physicians getting costlier and more scarce, pharmacists are stepping into the role of caregiver. They spend less time filling prescriptions (now largely delegated to assistants) and more time on the front lines: teaching diabetic patients how to inject insulin, helping hypertension patients manage their blood pressure, dispensing advice on which over-the-counter medication to use. One of a pharmacist's most important jobs is ensuring that patients can safely take multiple drugs together—interactions can be deadly."

"Like all new technologies, cognitive enhancement can be used well or poorly. We should welcome new methods of improving our brain function. In a world in which human workspans and lifespans are increasing, cognitive enhancement tools — including the pharmacological — will be increasingly useful for improved quality of life and extended work productivity, as well as to stave off normal and pathological age-related cognitive declines23. Safe and effective cognitive enhancers will benefit both the individual and society. But it would also be foolish to ignore problems that such use of drugs could create or exacerbate. With this, as with other technologies, we need to think and work hard to maximize its benefits and minimize its harms."

"Google.org's initial focus is on emerging infectious diseases, which are on the rise worldwide. Climate change, deforestation, and rising international travel and trade all contribute to this threat. Moreover, humans and animals are coming into closer contact because of environmental degradation and increased demand for animal products. Nearly three out of four new diseases spread from animals to humans. While everyone faces increasing risk from emerging infectious diseases, the world's poor – who have minimal or no access to health care and may live with and depend on animals for their livelihood – are exceptionally vulnerable and stand to suffer the most"

"President George W. Bush, his approval ratings at historic lows and U.S. economy veering toward a recession, suffered another blow to his legacy yesterday when one of his most vociferous critics was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics. While the Nobel committee cited Princeton University Professor Paul Krugman for his analysis of international trade, he is probably most widely known for his critiques of Bush's policies from the war in Iraq to economics in a twice-weekly column in the New York Times and appearances on television."
