Does clicking that empty area still open a new tab; or is clicking to open a new tab gone altogether now?

It still opens it. I wish double-clicking that area (far right) will open a new tab.

Agreed, AJ. That'd be a pretty nice enhancement if you could just double-click the empty space to open a new tab.
