That is a very thin pole. It should have had a piling or guard rail around it at the base to make it have a much wider profile. Then when cars hit it it would spread the load out across the surface of the car instead of acting like a knife. It is amazing the occupants did not get killed or at the very least suffer severe damage to their legs! - Jeff P. Henderson
