A Cleveland police official giving an early-morning interview today said Amanda Berry's the real hero. Granted, Amanda Berry is a survivor, and it was heroic for her to take the opportunity to cry out for help. But if Charles Ramsey had choosen to keep walking – as so many of us do when we see trouble – then those women might still be in captivity today. He might not look the part, but at least three women and a 6-year-old girl are thankful he played the part. He's not Denzel or Snipes or The Rock. Charles Ramsey is a real hero.

I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email.

Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier.

So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there).

Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..

I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.

Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.

true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.

The bigger news will be is he signed by any team. He's not on any teams right now so it's kind of a grey area, he's not an active player. If a team signs him that will be big I think as it will be post coming out. Meaning a team thought about it and any consequences and went with him. He's not a spring chicken so he might never play again without it having to do with the being public about preferences.

Well, he played the 2012-2013 season but is now an unrestricted free agent, so, yeah, we'll see if he gets to keep playing, but I think this is fairly different from athletes who came out long after they retired from the sport.

Also, not to get all side-tracked and emotional, but this is when I knew FriendFeed was more than just your average socnet. You were in the military, obviously and we had interacted a bit but then you were stationed overseas AND I WAS SO WORRIED ABOUT YOU. You talked about running (either not being able to or running all of the time?) and I was like aren't we at war? "Slugs will ruin a vegetable garden pretty fast unless some serious means of taking care of them is implemented. The electric fence has proven to be pretty well 100% effective in my experiments to date. The fence consists of two runs of wires spaced about 3/4 inch apart running around the perimeter of the raised bed - one wire is connected to the +ve terminal and the other to the -ve terminal of a battery. An electric current will flow through the slug if it makes contact with both wires at the same time. The resulting "shock" with usually cause the slug to turn back. I've been using a 9-volt battery as the power source, the battery lasts the whole growing season but the voltage drops to 5 volts or so by the end of the season (my measurements). It's a good idea to check the volage once in a while to make sure the battery is still providing enough voltage (corrosion can be a problem at the battery connectors). A few years ago when setting up a new fence I didn't have a 9-volt battery...
