That's such bullshit that they leave "upgradeable" off the Mac side. Of course you can upgrade a Mac. You can't do it indefinitely because new technology imposes ceilings that old designers didn't necessarily foresee, but yes, you can upgrade.
- Spidra Webster
Yep, which is why I have to make this point every time someone makes a post like this. Counter the stupid and nonsense marketing.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
The displays and added memory also make it a very skewed comparison (never buy extra memory from Apple). Compare base machines, and don't forget to show specs... there are bound to be other architectural differences. And yes, those Mac towers in particular are very upgradeable, with 4 drive bays, 8 memory slots, and 3 PCI slots aside from the graphics card. Oh, and 2 gigabit ethernet ports that I link using LACP to get a 2 gigabit connection.
- Tinfoil 2.0
I want to know where I can buy that PC. :) I'm a Mac guy but some of my new code requires windows.
- mikepk
Wintel vs Macintel, you mean. There's very little difference these days between a Mac branded PC and any other higher end PC.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
Actually, Wintel doesn't cover it, either, Alex, because there are other processor manufacturers for PCs now.
- Spidra Webster
Depends on what are you going to do with it. If you're going to use adobe products, get a Mac. If you're going to be gaming, and everything else can be done in the Windows PC.
- Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
Oh Come On, everyone knows the price of aluminum is through the roof these days... ;)
- Joshua Schnell
This comparison is of a computer with Intel proc and presumably Windows, therefore Wintel is fine. And Mac is the name that Apple has named their computer, so that is fine too. Alex, you're right that PC is too general of a phrase to use correctly, but Wintel vs Mac for this comparison already encodes all the necessary distinction -- you don't really need to add "Macintel" except to belabor your point.
- Chieze Okoye
I can vouch for the Mac Pro being the winner as that is what I'm typing from right now: running OS X with two Windows 7 VMs smoothly chugging along for development, testing, and general Windows goodness.
- Akiva
Where can i buy that pc. Specifications are well when i compared its price :)))
- Hadi Joseph Yaman
I'm a cheap bastard and a gamer. So there.
- Rodfather
Wintel is so 1990's. Doesn't make sense if there's an AMD processor in there too.
- Rodfather
Rodfather says more clearly what I was saying upthread.
- Spidra Webster
The architecture is (essentially) the same. (Do most Windows machines have EFI instead of BIOS now?) It's Windows versus Mac on the x86 side. On the other hand, there are probably lots of Mac users who still own PPC Macs, so Mactel vs MacPPC is still a valid distinction.
- Victor Ganata
My memories of the 8-bit world are vague, but did people ever refer to Apple, Atari, Commodore, IBM, and Tandy computers as PCs, or was PC strictly an IBM thing?
- Victor Ganata
It was first IBM PC's. Like when they had the 8086 processor. Back then I just called them IBM's even if it wasn't made by them. Commodore's were PC's too but everyone just called them Commodores.
- Rodfather
Tandy's were 'different' though. So everyone called them Tandy's. They had the graphics edge and could run King's Quest with more colors :)
- Rodfather
Actually I don't think people really said PC (until the IBM PC was released) but I do seem to remember that people called them all personal computers.
- Victor Ganata
Hope the one on the left doesn't suddenly break down... At least they aren't flash mob dancing at the Genius Bar
- Johnny
from iPhone
When like Compaq starting making computers, it was called IBM PC compatible. Everyone just called them IBM's anyway.
- Rodfather
Anyway, from what little I've seen, those LED Cinema Displays look totally worth it :)
- Victor Ganata
And from the specs given, the Mac is only $7,287 :P LIARS! :D
- Victor Ganata
"Wintel is so 1990's. Doesn't make sense if there's an AMD processor in there too." Ah, but Rodfather, there isn't an AMD in this comparison, so Wintel is fine. Maybe AMDows if AMD suits your fancy for a different comparison. In any case, it's just to get words that encode the distinction more accurately than PC vs Mac (even though the meaning is already clear enough, and this particular point all just boils down to prescriptive-linguist nitpicking).
- Chieze Okoye
I tried configuring a Dell server to similar specs, although I can't figure out how to customize it to get 2 quad-core CPUs, and the biggest screens they offer are 22". It comes out to $5,549 pre-discount, so I guess you still save about $1,500.
- Victor Ganata
Ah, I figured it out. It actually comes out to $7,079 pre-discount if you get a similarly spec'ed machine from Dell. So what I've learned here is that the only way to save a buttload of money is to build it myself.
- Victor Ganata
Wintel is like saying 'Cherry!' or 'Gnarley!' It's over dude.
- Rodfather
Chris, but how many people are still running NT on their DEC Alpha? Probably a lot less than the number of people who still run OS X on PPC hardware. :D
- Victor Ganata
I don't see how that price is even possible. Even buying used, a Xeon quad-core costs almost $500 each, and the cheapest motherboard I've seen that supports dual Xeons cost more than $200. You're telling me you can 12GB of RAM, a 1.5 TB hard drive, a 512 MB GeForce, two 24" displays, and Windows 7 64-bit for less than $200?!? Where is the van they're selling this stuff out of parked? :)
- Victor Ganata
Question should be with the same amount of money a new PC or a second hand Mac?
- ۳۰ مرغ Loves Y'ALLLLL
Victor: There are probably less people who ever ran NT on an Alpha, in total, then there are people still running OSX on PPC chips.
- Chris Charabaruk
I think it's bogus. I don't think you can buy a machine with those specs for that cheap, even if you build it yourself, even if you're buying parts used, and even if you're pirating your copy of Windows 7. And if you can, please tell me where so I can get one :)
- Victor Ganata
Oops, I searched for the wrong Xeon quad core. The cheapest price I've seen for the Xeon Nehalem is $1,300 each.
- Victor Ganata
If the configuration on the left is accurate, I want to buy a few of those.
