We have received numerous reports of excessive FriendFeed posts showing up in Facebook this evening. While we are not 100% sure, it appears to be an issue on Facebook's end due to ignoring application settings. We have disabled all FriendFeed updates to Facebook until we are sure the problem is resolved.
See http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... for more information - it seems to also have impacted Twitter's Facebook app. Again, we are not sure if it is a problem on our end or not, but we are investigating now.
- Bret Taylor
No problem, if I knew it was on your end, I wouldn't have cared, but thanks for letting me know about the situation. I was confused because it happened right as I was trying out a new twitter game. This was compounded by the fact that the game has no controls for turning off public messages. I'll bet they plan to add them later, but right now they want everyone to hear about it. It’s a...

- Michael Fidler
So, is it fixed?Every tweet, every everything is showing up as individual news feed posts for all my friends, this is too much and I'm likely to piss them all off. Options ... 1.Stop tweeting etc. 2.Ditch the FF Facebook application. Hmmm, it's a no brainer. Anyone got any updates on this?
- Michael M Bailey
Can you remind me again where to find those stats?
- Brian Johns
Brian, go to "Me" link (http://friendfeed.com/brianjo...) which defaults to the Feed tab. Look at the sidebar on the right, below Discussion.
- Micah
0.75 (926/1226) - still relatively new here
- mikepk
I only see my stats for the last week (17/14 = 1.21) Please tell me your 670 number is for more than just a week!
- Brian Johns
1.44 (566/391) for brianjohns (after week tally you should see a comma then 'all time' count - I can see it on your page)
- Micah
OK, sorry. I'm a total dumbass. I stopped reading after the weekly totals...
- Brian Johns
3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like.
- Cyrus Lendvay
FFers use FF with their own strategy or simply default tendencies. The ratio is an interesting snapshot of behaviour. Thanks for joining in everyone, hope more keep flowing in.
- Micah
from twhirl
0.66 - I tend to 'like' things without needing to comment further, I guess, and I notice I usually like the things upon which I comment. Well, frequently.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
.39 (2457/6242) I guess I don't comment much. I do 'like' a lot of things, it would seem.
- Bren
0.62 then again i have over 11,000 comments
- Cee Bee
1.23 (5287/4229) - I am put to shame by Cee Bee's participation, good grief!
- Lindsay
So far: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81 ... (if you average 1 comment per like, you'd be 1.0 ... if you're 0.xx you might herd content more than discuss ... if you're whole numbers above 1 you may not 'like' much or discuss plenty or both)
- Micah
InPerpetualMotion(Gina k), I really liked this 'Like' of yours (in a series of pics, so I flickr fav'd it): http://friendfeed.com/e... and commented. Thanks!
- Micah
.68 6986/10194 Someone wrote a great article on the comment-like ratio a few months ago. Search on FriendFeed is crashing on me... I'll try to get the link.
- Mitchell Tsai
Thanks Mitchell (btw, search crashing on me too - lots)
- Micah
1316 comments/20221 likes (0.06), according to Windows Calculator, although I probably screwed up.
- Tyson Key
A recent change in FF: now the comment count shows total number of comments (previously multiple comments in one thread only counted as one) http://friendfeed.com/e... so all the numbers above are from the old methodology....
- David HC Soul
My new ratio: 0.76 all time (old methodology .52).... this week 1.39
- David HC Soul
Looks like my ratio as flipped again (comments back to dominating again). Seems to match my own awareness I've lately been commenting without Liking (commenting is my inherent recognition of value to me and the additional Like is when it merits an extra bump to help discovery by others).
- Micah
Rick, you mean that face with glasses I photoshopped tint into with an apparently disembodied arm which is actually very much attached to my eldest son? It's mostly just me :)
- Micah
Thanks, Michael. Yes, you have a rising tide of comment percentage (oh, wow, you were one of the originals from January - cool!)
- Micah
Yeah, that's a decent upward rise in comments, Nicholas.
- Micah
.6 (6,000/10,000) 3rd update - Now it's time to flip this on its head. My goal is to have (16,000/16,000) next time I post here. Regardless of what happens, I'm just looking forward to the next 10,000 comments, likes, posts, and new relationships I make here. It's all good!
- Michael Fidler
1.76 (7539/4290) My commenting habits haven't chanced much, but it felt like I clicked Like a lot less, and this ratio confirms that for me.
- Micah
.82 as of right now. edit: on January 8th it was 0.39 -- when I saw that, I decided to make more of an effort to comment. When I hit 10k "likes" I decided I wouldn't "like" anything else until I also had 10k comments.
- Bren
Jimminy, I'm copyrighting every single number. It's kind of a honeypot ;) Actually, it was curiosity mostly, but I also hope to build a sampling (small and self-selecting as it may be) for anyone who might want to analyze it.
- Micah
12.23 (844 / 69 ) I guess I take my likes seriously ;)
- Chris Myles
Wow I didn't realize I was so out of whack!! 12.23 that's got to be a record (and I don't even import my feeds with the summary as a comment)!!
- Chris Myles
Thanks JA, Chris (wow, 12+ is unusual :), Serkan and Nine!
- Micah
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..
- Chris Myles
Likes are down relative to comments, which matches my much lower frequency of liking. I'm a more selective liker than ever.
- Micah
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.
- Micah
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff)
- chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered?
- Micah
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while...
- Bren
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.
- Bren
In 4 days it will be 1 year since my first recorded stat here. My comments/like were almost a 1:1 ratio then. Now comments are almost double likes for me.
- Micah
75,415 comments/1,286 likes = 58.64 - i wish the auto inserted comments didn't get counted... the true number is probably much much close ot my number of likes
- Chris Heath
1.97%. thanks again micah, this has been a great metric to measure my first year here on ff. As the year went (this being the first record of me being here that i've found): , 6.43%:1.25%:1.97%
- chaz2b
Chris, Bren, thank you. And chaz2b, thank you too - glad it's a special marker for you. :)
- Micah
63.58 (97,534/1,534) -- interesting that my last three digits are the same there, eh? (note, i already posted a month or two ago when i first saw this thread)
- Chris Heath
0.87 (3770/4312), so I'm either getting more commenty or less likey. [0.74 (1970/2667) was what I previously reported back in June]
- Hiding in Two Corners
Last year my comments were around 7000 and likes around 2500, for a ratio of 2.80. I consciously chose to do more liking over the last year. As of today my comments number 10,782 and likes number 7,666, for a ratio of 1.41.
- Stephen Mack
Jason, Stephen - cool. Thanks for keeping updated here. :)
- Micah
Okay, Micah. <----I had to resist the urge not to post that because I know it's going to up my comment count. ;)
- Jenny H
But how many of those primordial, high interest posts are still active. Uh huh. :)
- Micah
Thanks, Morton. BTW, when you posted in February, it was exactly 0.13 also.
- Micah
Jenny, resistance is futile; embrace the rising tide of comments.
- Micah
Comments are more difficult and time consuming than Likes. I'd be happy about a high comment:likes ratio except that many are surely imported from feeds, while every Like is manual.
- Mike Chelen
it has changed to 2.2256 now as Sep, 6 2010.Labor Day. :) I added the date for future references.
- ۳۰ مرغ Loves Y'ALLLLL
Two years later and my ratio has climbed from 3.4 to 4.675. I've got a lot to say, apparently.
- Kevin Fox
Funnily, I didn't notice until after leaving that comment that when I reported my stat in 2009 I also followed it up with "I've got stuff to say." I didn't say it was *new* stuff...
- Kevin Fox

"As a devoted FriendFeed user, I have tried to convince all of my friends and family to join the site, but a handful of them never quite got their accounts set up properly. What am I supposed to get when I click the 'recommend friends' link on someone's pop-up? Currently, the popup just goes away and I don't get directed anywhere else.
- FFing Enigma
Fred: yah, unfortunately, you can only recommend people who you are subscribed you and who are also subscribed back to you.
- Bret Taylor
Mark, I didn't submit a bug report since what is supposed to happen wasn't actually spelled out on the blog post or here; this might be the intended functionality... I hope not, but it's possible.
- FFing Enigma
Tina: it is supposed to pop up a dialog. Sorry for the trouble - we will look into it.
- Bret Taylor
At first I did not understand this, but now that I am checking it out, it is brilliant and addresses much of what we have complained about. NOW what will we complain about?
- Liza + = ?
Just to confirm Bret, the first image in the blog post is what the pop up is supposed to look like, right? Because that's nothing like what the ff.com/recommend page looks like....
- FFing Enigma
I notice that new subscriptions are automatically added to one's home feed. I consider that kind of a bug.
- Meryn Stol
Tina: yes, that is correct. The http://friendfeed.com/friends... page is just a list of people that we think could use some friend recommendations since they have few subscriptions. If you click on any of the "Recommend" links on that page, you will see the same, standard "Recommend friends" dialog.
- Bret Taylor
Where would we find recommendations that others suggest to us?
- Fred Yankowski
@Bret, who receive the recommandation see also who is the recommender?
- Roberto
Fred: You will receive an email as well as a notification on the top of your feed.
- Ross Miller
Roberto: yes, they see who recommended
- Bret Taylor
Bret, if I recommend friends to people who haven't signed in for a long time, will they get email? A lot of my bored friends are not active FF users I think. (quite logical)
- Meryn Stol
Not getting the pop-over when I click 'recommend' on the friendfeed.com/friends/recommend page either... FFox 3.0.12 if it's relevant.
- FFing Enigma
and can I see who has accepted my recommendation?
- Roberto
Roberto: You won't be notified if they accept/deny as the recommender.
- Ross Miller
Ross: Ah, it just appeared on my feed. Cool. (And thanks Meryn)
- Fred Yankowski
Meryn: yes, they will get an email with your recommendations
- Bret Taylor

Bret, I accidently just received an email with previous recommendations. I had already viewed them through the web-interface. But indeed, it's there. Email looks good too, as I expected of course. :)

If there’s something about friends and family not having their account set up properly, I’d prefer a way to recommend them the streams they forgot to add. For example, I could tell them “You forgot to add your Digg stream and your fourth and eight blog. Here’s the link.” Then he could just click the recommendation and had it set up easily.
- Natsuki Seika
As I have lots of subscriptions the pop-up window is *really* slow and always has been since the new UI (same thing for amending friends lists). :-( I like the feature though, so I could make a new friends list of my most recommended users and use that each time for each user?
- Kol Tregaskes

I made a small journey through FF-sphere. Just to see what other people did theme-wise. Whether they had wanted to be original or liked it more the way it was. So I jumped from 1 account to another by going to the 1st person that had liked or commented on an entry. Does it say anything? Do you have a theme that's especially YOU?
No, I probably made a mistake here. FFundercats is not an open account. It should be another one with green toy thingies.

Luckily Nik, FF allows you to turn them off so you never have to see any custom themes.

I love them, Nik, because that's the way you can add a personal touch to the design that's all ready-made. They don't have to be beautiful to me, as long as they say something about the person who is using it.

Indeed, I do. I was so jealous when someone posted from the west coast about eating crepes filled with Nutella, whipped cream and strawberries, but there was nowhere I could go for that. I was in Cincinnati yesterday and took advantage of Jungle Jim's proximity to pick up some things I can't find in town, and when I saw crepes (which I will NOT make myself), I nabbed 'em! No, it's disgusting. The worst such hazelnut cream produced, sticky, oversweet and at the same time flavorless. There are bunches of much better similar creams around, not necessarly hugely more costly: Novi cream is hugely better and still in the same price range!

@Eta, nutella is disgusting. not hazelnut creams. The point is that nutella has next to no hazelnut in, that's part of what makes it so bad. Again, try some better hazelnut creams, stuff that does not feel like sugary glue in your mouth but rather is silky with a distinct taste of toasted hazelnut. You will taste the difference.

I know I'll cop shit for this (and there is certainly plenty of 'taking this piss' punnage available) but I think R. Kelly's Trapped In The Closet series is a masterpiece. Suspense, intrigue, twists and turns. I am not ashamed to say it :)

Tina, you should see me try to turn a suppressed laugh into a fake cough some days just so I don't have to try and explain why I'm cracking up around this place =)

See the curly perm kills it. Either you have the authentic Jewfro from the beginning, or you don't. Back when he was rocking the short and conservative cut, he was just nerdy enough to get my baby gaydar rising. Oh, to be six again...

"According to the figures, the jury is in: men will choose a Rubenesque size 14 over a stick- figure size 8 when it comes to their ideal woman. Admittedly, the science could be seen as somewhat superficial. It is based on an online survey – not the most accurate means of obtaining information – of 60,000 men conducted by laddish men's magazine FHM. The mag found that when shown pictures of three bikini-clad models, four out of five men said they were more attracted to the size 12 and size 14 models than the model who was a slimmer size 8. The majority of votes went to the size 12 woman, with 41 per cent saying that she had the body shape of their "ideal girlfriend". Almost as many men voted for the Nigella Lawson-esque size 14 model."

Hating to be the party pooper here, but: how tall were their size 8,12, and 14 women? Someone who is 5'10" size 14 likely has a very different body shape than a 5'4" size 14.

Smart men like curvy women. I am a smart man, therefore I like curvy women. QED.

i am a smart woman i like curvey man ;)

I'm lazy to convert inches to meters (that's my unit) but one thing's for sure: I really am not into what they call "hot" women. You know... the kind of pics that are often posted here on FF.
- directeur
Speaking only for myself, I don't care what your height is; 4' 11" or 6' 6", if you've got the curves, then you've got my attention. I have not the slightest interest in stick figures.

Well that explains a lot. *has second serving of dinner... alone*

If you're comparing three different women, you could choose specific women to prove almost any point. But I still think it's true that ultraskinny is naturally unattractive to others.

here is a good article by nigella lawson on this http://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment... it is such a pity that women spend their entire teens and most of their 20s struggling and getting upset over a few extra pounds (which is often not even "extra") and only somewhere at the end of their 20s find out that men actually like those curves that they've been...

"When First Lady Michelle Obama instructed White House staff to plant an organic vegetable garden for the First Family, Weston’s Amy Becerra was hopeful the trend would catch on. Her own collection of fruits and vegetables includes peas, carrots, corn, tomatoes, strawberries and oranges, all grown without pesticides or growth chemicals. But the homeowners association where she lives has ordered Becerra to remove her fruit trees and the raised beds of vegetables and herbs growing in her backyard – or face paying $100 a day in fines. “If the President is growing a vegetable garden at the White House,” Becerra said. “I don’t see what’s the problem with having one in my own backyard.” The Weston Hills/North Hills Homeowners Association argues in a letter sent to Becerra that she is violating a rule that requires all fruit trees and vegetable gardens be placed inside a screened-in patio. Becerra counters that a different manual provided to homeowners makes no reference to fruit trees and...

Reason #5,389,798 why I will NEVER buy a home that is part of a HOA.

"“The architectural control guidelines want all the houses to look the same,” Wolland said of the HOA guidelines. “Well, from the street you can’t tell that this house is any different from any of the other neighboring houses,” Wolland said. “It looks just as nice. You can’t tell there is a vegetable garden until you start climbing around to see what’s going on back there. That’s the...

HOAs are also often against people drying their laundry on a clothesline. They're locking people into more wasteful ways of living.
- Spidra Webster
I would never survive with a HOA. They have such ridiculous standards.
- Heather Rantypants
The sad thing is that their antiquated and busybody rules are keeping people from adopting more sustainable lifestyles. HOAs have not only come down on edible gardens but also on clotheslines.

Before I go to bed, a friendfeed poll for you to answer while I'm sleeping: restaurants where the menu always seems appealing but the food never lives up to expectations. Go!
I have got to second Appleby's, but also mention TGIF.
- Ragani Harris
Doesn't seem appealing but people go on and on about the wings at Hooters and it's a big FAIL. Agree on Sonic.
- Gabrielle
I wouldn't put TGIF and Applebee's in the same category as Waffle House and Sonic, but I do agree that their food never seems to live up to the expectations their menus present. @Gabrielle - I've only ever had re-heated Hooters wings, so I can't really comment on how good they are, but I wasn't impressed with the re-heated ones.
- Fried Curdys
Any neighborhood-grill type chain. Waffle House food, however, is always as I expect it.
- FFing Enigma
Applebee's, Ruby Tuesday, TGIFriday. Waffle House, however, is always exactly what I anticipate, namely delicious.
- Alex Scrivener
Yours must be different than ours, Alex. ;) Outback, however, has been awesome every time I've been there (no matter where in the country I go). I've also been really impressed with the new Logan's Roadhouse that opened near us a few months ago. Applebee's, Ruby's, TGIFridays, etc. are usually fairly good, but not amazing. Waffle House and Sonic usually don't satisfy me. Checkers (Rally's in other parts of the country), on the other hand, is generally awesome.
- Fried Curdys
pan-fried with lots of butter probably isn't what you have in mind
- Katy S
I was thinking of maybe roasting them for a bit and then maybe dicing them up with some fresh herbs, a little olive oil, and maybe some (!) garlic? and kind of sauteeing them?
- Derrick
Steam or baked and mashed with just a bit of of your butter alternative of choice. I also like 'em cubed with a drizzle of olive oil, salt, and pepper.
- FFing Enigma
Do you like curry? Chicken or Lentils with sweet potatoes in a curry is really yum.
- Kristin
I think they're good just roasted or baked into french fries. Also lots of good stews.

All of these sound great, thanks, people. Good to have options.
- Derrick
Do you enjoy smoothies? If so I would imagine steamed sweet potatoes would make a tasty one! Oooh, and if the weather goes the other direction you would puree the steamed cubes with chicken stock to make sweet potato soup. In fact, that is now what I'm craving...
- FFing Enigma
Really, almost any preparation you'd do for potatoes will work for these. Mashed and smashed sweet potatoes are wonderful.
- Katy S
Duly noted. Now if I can just convince the other folks in the house to eat them. :(

This reminds me that I need to try to make sweet potato pie one of these days.
- Katy S
Twice baked! After the first bake, scoop the good bits into a bowl, mix in green chilis (and whatever spices you like, but definitely the chilis), and bake in a casserole dish. Serve topped with chives and plain yogurt.
- Kirsten
I'm a firm believer in mashed or roasted with other root veggies or pretty much any other way I can fit them in my diet. I'll second pie.
- Hedgehog
Roasted in fry-form with a wee bit of sea salt sprinkled over after tossing them in olive oil. NOM
- ωαřмaiden ☆Team O'Otto☆
I've been playing around with jerk mashed sweet potatoes. Fries, too.
- Ha3rvey (F please!)
i just chop them into chunks, put them in the microwave, and then put some olive oil and salt and pepper on them. if you microwave them a bit longer, you have mashed. :)
- edythe
I wrap them in foil and bake them until soft, then add butter and bit of cinnamon and brown sugar for sweet or salt, pepper, and some cayenne for savory. I like the oven roasted suggestions, too, but I prefer them mashed over firm.
- Trish R
I need to get these back into my diet as well
- Michael W. May
Peel 1 large potato, chop into chunks and boil in a few cups of chicken stock with salt, pepper, cinnamon, and chili powder (to your spice preference) until really tender, blend and serve up with a bit of yogurt and chives as a garnish.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Baked...then split them open and pour on a thick syrup made from frozen concentrated orange juice (thawed) and brown sugar. Then bake them a little longer. (don't do this in a glass dish, and make sure you line the pan with foil...or just use a disposable pan)
- April
bake. top with gorgonzola cheese and bacon bits. (just don't use a lot of either. they're not FARP friendly)
- tiffany
I love them in curries. Here are some recipes from the NC sweet potato council: http://www.ncsweetpotatoes.com/compone... We keep meaning to try some of these out but haven't yet.

Soup! Sweet potatoes, stock, tablespoon or so of rice, ginger. All blended together once everything is soft.
- Heather
Roast them in the oven first. When they are al dente, take them out, peel them and slice them. Lay them in a deep pan or pot and put some butter on top, then squeeze an orange over it, put some brown sugar on top as much as you think is right (depending on the sweetness), then grate some nutmeg over it or you can use powdered nutmeg. Now, take either some walnuts or hazelnut and put...

- WoH: Minding her Steves
...I oven-roast them with a little extra virgin olive oil, a bit of salt, parsnips, carrots, sesame seeds, fresh pepper and ginger...and it's good. Broccoli and kale also work really well. Any left overs (as if) make a great soup base.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
Although yams and sweet potatoes are both angiosperms (flowering plants), they are not related botanically. Yams are a monocot (a plant having one embryonic seed leaf) and from the Dioscoreaceae or Yam family. Sweet Potatoes, often called ‘yams’, are a dicot (a plant having two embryonic seed leaves) and are from the Convolvulacea or morning glory family.

A thought: since paddling or corporal punishment was removed from many public schools, the rise in bullying to the level of causing suicides seems to have increased. I'd be interested to see what the bullying rate (at least reported) are in the schools who still maintain spanking. Would foursquare help in this?
- Melanie Reed
I suspect the apparent rise in incidence in bullying is mostly due to increased reporting. I suspect the rate of suicide hasn't really changed at all, it's just people's awareness that has increased.
- Victor Ganata
I don't know about that Victor, I'm a bit older. I grew up in a very small town and when I went to school there wasn't that much bullying..not like today where it is an everyday gauntlet affair. When there was bullying, it was usually reported and that kid made a trip to the Principle's office and it was school gossip for days and lo, there was a "fear of God" attitude that seemed to...

Bullying isn't something people have been keeping statistics on for very long, so there's no objective way to tell. And you know how I feel about confusing anecdotes with data, so there's probably not much more to say.
- Victor Ganata
My elementary school had paddling and there were still plenty of bullies.
- FFing Enigma
Truth isn't found only in statistics, Victor. In fact often you will find even within weeks, two conflicting stat reports will be published. Numbers may not lie, as they say, but they can often be juggled. Better to listen to someone you have built a relationship with and have come to know them and trust them for truth
- Melanie Reed
Anecdotes are not data. People remember things wrong all the time. Independent corroboration increases my level of confidence in someone's observations.
- Victor Ganata
I witnessed and experienced a lot of bullying when I was in school. Much of it absolutely did not get reported. Are you nuts?! You'd get it even worse. Agree, though. Anecdotes don't really mean much. I'm sure others in my same class had no idea what was going on.
- Rahsheen the Dream
Violence begets violence.I highly doubt spanking makes kids behave like saints.
- Heather Rantypants
Melanie, am I reading your position right? You're advocating a return to corporal punishment in order to prevent a perceived increase in bullying?
- Stephen Mack
from iPhone
Also, when I say "anecdotes are not data", I'm not saying you didn't experience what you say you experienced. I'm saying I can't generalize that as true for a given population.
- Victor Ganata
from iPhone
I didn't think you were. But I'm not looking at population only but of a given time period as opposed to a later time period and the accompanying scope. No one is saying that there has never been bullying. The first crime ever committed was a murder. But there is an aggregation here over time and scope. We're not looking at pocket areas where one area was worse than another given the same time period. This is a problem that has metastasized and is advanced.
- Melanie Reed
Like I said, there's no data to say one way or another that bullying has necessarily increased. All we know is that reporting has increased.
- Victor Ganata
from iPhone
Stephen, I am advocating what brings a greater degree of awareness to a stubborn and ridiculing soul. but who may yet be teachable and able to learn a lesson that doesn't get through by reasoning. Now you have kids who think reasoning is a huge joke along with time outs and being sent to the room. They simply wait until no one is looking again. People respond differently and when you...

If anything, the studies of periods for which we do have data for suggest the incidence has either been stable or decreasing.
- Victor Ganata
Yes, Victor, and that's why the world is in such a fine state today.
- Melanie Reed
I'm probably not the only person skeptical of any plan that intends to reduce violence by increasing violence.
- Victor Ganata
Right, because hitting kids as punishment teaches them not to hit others. Wait, what?
- Rochelle
It's never going to be perfect. Some things will make it better. Some things will make it worse. Again, I'm skeptical that the use of violence will decrease the incidence of violence.
- Victor Ganata
It's two different things, Victor. Violence is what the perpetrator does to hurt innocent others. Punishment for that crime, spanking, is the consequence of that behavior and a lesson
- Melanie Reed
Yeah, I'm going to have to go with the various reproducible studies that show corporal punishment is not very effective, instead of trusting people's anecdotes about how "it worked for them"
- Victor Ganata
Definitely cute in the "coming of age" sort of way. It's actually better if you don't play derby, otherwise you spend the movie nitpicking on gear and rules and skating position...
