"I have a New Year tradition. A bottle of champagne and truffles. I have both every year—I think it brings good fortune to have fortunate food on the first of the year. This year, it will be a bottle of rosé and this truffled macaroni gratin. How could that not herald great things? I start this off, like all great mac and cheeses, with a roux: but this roux begins with truffle butter. Once it is smooth and rich and dappled with bits of black truffle as eggnog is with cinnamon, I add in the cheddar, Gruyère, and the brie, and the rigatoni. I rub fresh baguette crumbs with truffle butter and bake them over the top. Drizzle with black truffle oil, and serve bubbling. It is a cauldron of happiness full of spells to enchant the new year."

Erica Joy made something like this a few days ago.

I made a macaroni and cheese as part of Xmas dinner, with the chicken and ham and drank it with a nice brut prosecco type sparking rose. this is lovely.

Impossible to read from the passing car, but perfect for blogging. Strange there is no contact information in the text, so people seeing it online would know where to find these creative guys. Couldn't imagine it's really a TV Show ad. Looks like an agency showing off. Paul, do you know where the billboard is located?
- earlyadopter
Looks photoshopped to me, i.e. nice idea but not real.
- Miriam
I'm guessing that this was in England, NZ, or Australia.

It's a shame that it doesn't use true small caps, instead using reduced-sized capitals.
- Mistletoe Glen
Mistletoe: I was thinking the same thing. :(

I was never really into football until Rochelle and I got together. I used to watch games with my dad but only because my dad was watching them. She got me into watching college ball (which I had never done before) and always having an NFL game on. Now, I'm big into it and Rochelle only barely pays attention. I kind of miss the days where she would get as nuts about it as I do.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Bren, oh I'm with you there, too. Got into proper football three or four years ago. You should see my calendar set-up for the World Cup.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I was really into rugby for a season or two. *shrug*
- Derrick
NICE. Can't make a reasonable argument for judging a family so harshly, so you disable comments. That's how you take your ball and run home, folks. http://friendfeed.com/h0llywo...
Normally, I wouldn't be so crass as to call someone out like this, but it just boggles my mind that there are people this rude and judgmental in the world. I know it shouldn't, but every time I come across someone like this I feel a moral obligation to speak up and defend the people who are being held to unfair, unreasonable standards-- "modern" societal standards.
- Jason Huebel
I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you've got thin skin, then this isn't the business to be in.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Thankfully, I don't have thin skin. But I'm also not going to be accepting of that kind of behavior. If we don't speak up for each other when it counts, then what good is "community"?
- Jason Huebel
Not only are so many of the statements there judgmental, they are just plain wrong. If you're going to post a rant about something, at least get your facts straight first.
- Rochelle
+1 Natalie. I tried to stay cool, but arguments get... well... heated. Kind of comes with the territory. Hopefully my arguments stand on their own. I don't really agree with Quiverfull as an ideology (I'm done at three kids), but I do think the Duggars do a good job with so many kids. Note: not a fanboy, just believe in defending a family that raises well-adjusted kids.
- Jason Huebel
from Android
I guess it depends on how you define "community".
- cecily
What bothers me is the double standard towards the Duggars. I might not agree with their lifestyle or their choices, but why is it ok to make comments that they should be stopped from breeding or she should be sterilized when women fight so hard to not have the same remarks made about their own reproductive choices?
- Trish R
That's what bothered me too, Trish. That and the idea that because your taxes go to support social programs that you should have some say in the reproductive choices of people who use those programs.
- cecily
My question to people who don't like the Duggars is the same as the question to people who are against gay marriage. How does their lifestyle and how do their choices affect your life at all?
- Rochelle
People should just be happy the baby is doing so well for being so tiny.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
I say good for you Jason, for speaking up! I guess I could understand such vitriol from those two, if the Duggars were, or had been, on welfare, but since they haven't been and it doesn't look like they will, and in no way has the Duggars life choices affected them.....what the hell is their problem??
- Bonnie Foster
Huh, did she just delete warmaiden's last comment? That thread was bizarre.

When I was a few weeks old, my mother had heard that every man wanted their son to be president, so she asked my dad if that was true and he responded, " Yes, President of the NFL." Needless to say I had those old NFL curtain, comforter wallpaper set that some of your might remember.
- RAPatton
We also received several footballs as gifts for him, including a football piggy bank from Tiffany & Co. Everyone knows this is a football family. :)

This is exciting for me because I was one of the people who got duped when I bought a HD DVD player for my xbox. You can imagine how pissed I was when the switch happened.

In a near-emergency, I once bought an order of gizzards and livers from Church's chicken to grind up and make into dirty rice. </macgyvertime>

And I've made a vegetarian version with Morningstar Farms breakfast sausage patties. :)

The 3D was laborious for me. Would have enjoyed it much more on 2D. But that's just me and my eyes, probably. I thought the story was fine and don't pay attention to those who keep picking it apart. The production was excellent and if anything the movie would be better if it didn't feel rushed. I am going to really enjoy it when it comes out on bluray, hopefully with an extra hour of footage.
- Josh Haley
someone tell me what to have! do I just stick with rum and coke? light or dark rum? or go to the stand-by malibu? oh, and I have a glogg mixer from World Market too. aaaaaaahhhhhhh!

"There is a leak in your roof, and it is dripping water into a bucket: drip drip, drip drip. That's the sun. Then someone dumps the bucket of water over your head all at once, only the bucket is the size of 250 Olympic swimming pools. That's your neutron star."

"The Dallas Cowboys finally have a handle on their December doldrums. Now it's time to work on January. The Cowboys returned to the playoffs Sunday night, pitching a 17-0 shutout in their 100th meeting with the Washington Redskins and setting up an NFC East title showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles. After starting 0-2 this month, Dallas recovered to win back-to-back December games for the first time since 2003. The latest victory eliminated the New York Giants from playoff contention."

You know those mist stands they have at amusment parks that spray a fine mist which cools you off without getting you wet? My inlaws' shower is just like that.
I have never heard of this mist-but-not-wet thing.
- Rochelle
They cool you off on a hot day at a park. It's a fine mist which evaporates before it can hit you, cooling the air. Nice if you are hot from walking around on a warm day, but not if you want to wash your hair.
- Alex Scrivener
from iPhone
I don't think it ever gets warm enough here in Seattle to need that kind of device.
- Rochelle
I don't know, Rochelle... this past summer, I might have had use for one.
- Bren -- feeling merry
I heard that wasn't really happening, Rochelle, everyone remain calm and go back to spraying Aqua-Net directly into the atmosphere.
- Bren -- feeling merry
Note that misters are most effective in areas with low humidity. I don't think Seattle qualifies.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Yeah, it get moderately humid here in the summers. Certainly nothing like the south, but it's not desert dry, either.
- Rochelle
Really humid here, but they're all over because it's just so hot. The one at Ren Fest a couple years ago was best because it was mist AND shade (they built a walk through for it).
- Alix Whitmire
And if you get hotter summers Rochelle, you'll get higher humidity too.
- Michael R. Bernstein
Just be careful not to do it on a spare-the-air day. I'm considering buying a Hummer just to drive it around on spare-the-air nights with the heat turned up high to keep warm and the yule log playing on the dashboard.
- Cristo
I get about half a dozen comments like this on my sites a month, mostly from rednecks and schoolkids. I'm retaliating by driving on the wrong side of the road, since I'm tired of people telling me how to live my life, too.
- Chris Baskind
Chris, I wasn't proposing breaking the law. I was proposing demonstrating the stupidity of the law.

If burning wood and owning dogs are the environmental issues of today, what are they tomorrow? Using the web, exercising (which causes more breathing), and eating non-vegetables, right?
- Cristo
Maybe if we all just kill ourselves, the environment will be better off.

We should all get fat, too - you know skinny people take up more energy because fat people live shorter lives

I hate finger-wagging of any kind, including that from my fellow greenies. But if I had a nickel for every time I've heard something sophomoric like Arrington's comment -- well, I'd be as rich as he is. ;-)

Whoops, Alistair, I just checked and these are Mountaineer apples, related to the York Imperial. Very crisp and tasty, seem v. hardy, and interestingly shaped (sort of flattened out). I'm having one now. :) More here: http://blog.wholefoodsmarket.com/2009...

Christmas Eve, my daughter made a mahito broccoli stir-fry for a dinner party she was attending. There was a lot of leftover rice. Since I don't like to waste food, for Christmas dinner we had broiled fish, some of the leftover rice, and an assortment of veggies. Dessert was my fat free vegan pumpkin bread. http://momscookbook.blogspot.com/2006...

Cannot wait to bring Rochelle to see this in IMAX 3D. Most likely bringing her father, brother, and her brother's girlfriend, too. (Her mother, who has zero interest, gets Audrey duty!)

Michael, We're here. How can we help right now? I'm sorry I'm not there. Do you have someone near? Of course, I am praying for you as soon as I saw. But if you need someone to talk with we're here. DM me if you want. I am OC, too.
- Melanie Reed
We're all sending you positive healing vibes, Michael.
- cecily
Let us know when you can dear brother if you have someone with you for support, medical or otherwise. In the meanwhile, I will stay up with you through the night in prayer. Please let us know how you are when you can and see this.
- Melanie Reed
Michael, still here and checking back. Am praying the psalms for you. You are not alone. He is with us no matter what we go through. Do not fear. Take courage. Right alongside you.
- Melanie Reed
Michael, the fact that you are experiencing this pain demonstrates that not only are you able to cope with it but that you could endure more. Whenever you survive the experience of any pain, you have already beaten that pain. You've already beaten it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Still with you, Michael. Rest. You have many praying on your behalf and you have the victory now. God bless you.
- Melanie Reed
Michael, still here. I'll be here most of day working online.

Talk to us, Michael. When you get a chance. God bless you for sharing your experiences. Let us take some of the weight off your shoulders.

Michael, how are you today? Still praying for you. @EasternOrthodox I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall ever be on my lips. In the Lord my soul will be praised; let the meek hear and be glad. We have the victory because He conquered the world for us. hang on to that. God bless you.
- Melanie Reed
Thanks, everyone! The difficult part is keeping mentally stable during a bout of pain. I'm not handling it as well as I'd like, but I'm working on it. My oncologist put me on morphine (insurance won't pay for oxycontin until I try morphine first), so it should be under control now.
- Michael McKean
Glad to hear you are feeling better. Hang in there :)
- Eric Logan
I am glad it is more under control now, Michael. It isn't an easy burden you carry
- RAPatton
Good Lord, I missed this earlier, but I've been praying for you daily since your first post about your illness popped up in my feed. I will focus those prayers a bit more now.
