I wonder about the real time capabilities with ff, that could be the only hangup. TEST HERE: I'm just typing babble here to test how much I can post. As far as I can tell there are no character limitations which may or may not be an issue. Lorem ipsum. I could fill up more space by reciting my Master's thesis defense. That would really put everyone to sleep. TEST OVER.
- Andy Kleinschmidt
Seems good, what is the latency like?
- dfowler7437
if you create a group you can have a public stream gathered in one place.
- Shaun Haney
i am visual miss everyone's faces. hard to remember names!
- Ulla Kjarval
Problem: I cannot reply directly to an individual's comments. I can reply to the question, but let's say Shaun Haney makes a comment that I want to reply, I cannot thread that reply. (at least, I don't know how.)
- Andy Kleinschmidt
Tonight twitter had bad lag and seemed to loose tweets, but other nights it has been very responsive, maybe 10 seconds or so to see your tweet. We do see our messages quick here but others do not. I like the verification of the tweet systems where you see your tweet at about the same time as others, even if it is late.
- dfowler7437
any conclusions. Did everyone try the group
- Shaun Haney
At least there I know my message really made it, here I am not sure. It just puts my message up instantly apparently without passing it through the system.
- dfowler7437
Wow, it does look like it posts in realtime. Surely faster than the turtleverse tonight.
- Michele Payn-Knoper
Another problem I see is that this does not limit the size of your message. Some might see this as a good thing. But its nice to force concise tweets. I can write a book if given the freedom.
- dfowler7437
there is a limit, kinda, its like 250 characters
- Mike Haley
I see @Andy noted the same, about the text size.
- dfowler7437
I think it's 160 or 260 because it already limited me on my profile. It's not posting my comments, just my original post on FF.
- Michele Payn-Knoper
I wounder why its not posting to twitter? the cc box is not showing up
- Mike Haley
It's tough to know what to do because we have SUCH a community built on Twitter that I don't want to distract from that. On other hand, Twitter techno issues kill us when they happen. Tonight was bad. Missing & then slow!
- Michele Payn-Knoper
Ok, got it figured out, if the original post was made on twitter then additional comments can also be posted there if the cc box is checked
- Mike Haley
OK, now I see the cc box. Interested. This may be OK for techie folks, but not for the average agchat user.
- Michele Payn-Knoper
Agree with the real time yes. Finally finding it, no. Have been on FF for awhile & still not convinced it will work for general agchat community.
- Michele Payn-Knoper
Your hard to please MPK. Lets give FB a try now.
- Shaun Haney
well thats the problem, it started on twitter ;) thats where everybody already is!
- Mike Haley
anyone have a link to where you are at on FB?
- Mike Haley
I'm at www.facebook.com/mpaynknoper and have been checking out FB chats for awhile, w/o a lot of luck at figuring out how to start one. have participated, but having blonde moment in figuring how to execute it.
- Michele Payn-Knoper
well looks like we have a week to figure it out, change, or stay the same.
- Mike Haley
Problem is that I'm out for most of the week. Guess some of us can test it out as pilot group and if it goes OK, offer it up as an option. I just really don't want the agchat community split because of techno confusion w/ multiple tools.
- Michele Payn-Knoper
twitter is great! but with many nights like tonight, even if it was only half as bad, its hard to participate
- Mike Haley
Mike Haley raises a GREAT point. All the energy is on Twitter. Friend feed just doesn't have the energy of twitter. All the talk is twitter because it is soooo simple. FF, not so simple (at first).
- Andy Kleinschmidt
Agreed, which is why I've drug my feet about using FF. Would you agree it makes the most sense for a select group of folks to try it out for a couple of weeks to test it, then we can intro it to rest of community. FF at least mixes it up on Twitter - and provides option if it crashes & burns like tonight.
- Michele Payn-Knoper
hope you all dont mind me chiming in here...but friendfeed is really perfect for what you are doing...I think you need to give it some time to get people acclimatized to a new system...but if they've gone as far as twitter, friend feed really isnt that much farther and its very simple to use...i promise, and people can set notifications to be emailed, its really quite powerful...people will join i promise you
- Zachary Adam Cohen
let me know if i can be of any assistance in educating..but the invite ability really is strong, with profood, it tooks a few days, but 75 people joined within the first week, and that was really the majority of the voices for us...
- Zachary Adam Cohen
Thanks Zach, do you know if FF allows for mobile updates?
- Mike Haley
As long as people are on Twitter, they can particpate that way mobile even if we're using FF since they can be linked. They may not be able to make comments, but could easily still partipate unless the twitterverse comes crashing down on us again.
- Michele Payn-Knoper
like sms? let me find out real quick....it sends email notifications to email enabled phones...in real time...i am currently commenting back to you via gmail...but because there is no 140 character limit my initial feeling is that text is NOT supported...
- Zachary Adam Cohen
from email
Key is to keep mass group in one place or we will lose the value of the community. I'm very committed to serving the needs of the whole as much as the technology allows us to do (and time).
- Michele Payn-Knoper
Links are now part of the title (rather than linkifying your whole note about the item) and you should be able to attach images as before. Can you give me an example of a page that's giving you trouble? Thanks!
- Kevin Fox
Kevin: the post immediately before this one was done with the bookmarket
- Brad Kellett
Which one? How to make a baby? What did you try to add?
- Kevin Fox
When you open the bookmarklet, it only let's you put the link in the title like you say. This screws up the posting to Twitter (you get two links, the one in the title, and the one to the Friendfeed post). Before, it would post the title, and the Friendfeed link would link to the original page.
