These are the kind of people who cause sectarian violence, terrorism and feed enmity between nations and religions. They are the ones who need a 'reality check' and a history lesson. This is why we have wars in the world.... just utterly disgusting and sick! How many more people are to die due to these extremists and religious fanatics?

Predictive markets are found to be more accurate than polls according to the book crowdsourcing. The IEM is a marketplace where you can buy shares (with actual money max $500) on an outcome. Considering how the share market is going, maybe I should have put my money here!

This is crazy!! Why cant govt keep out of this? Companies that mess up should die... that is for free markets to decide. The govt should stop rescuing their evil cronies! I dont get why they would loan AIG but not rescue Lehman? This is absolutely insane...

OMG! Watching CNBC today is downright depressing!!

Dang! The stocks really took a nose dive -- globally....also think that the govt has no business bailing out companies like freddie mac, fanny mae and bear sterns using our tax dollars
lehman brothers -- a giant goes down and merrill lynch is now BOA's b***! BOA is getting scary powerful -- It is really a black monday!

They need to save some of it for the line of credit the FDIC will eventually ask for.
- Aviv
Aviv, forgive my ignorance in financial process but doesnt exactly this type of credit line artificially inflate the value of the dollar? I feel that even though the situation is bad -- it is best to leave things to the market to correct themselves. More the govt interferes with free market the more we get screwed -- No?

CNN and US News media in general is so narrow minded that i do not think they have even reported anything other than IKE. On the other hand, this is on the main page of BBC. http://www.bbc.co.uk/

What do you think about this series of books here comes long tail, blink, freakonomics, tipping point, everybody, once lucky twice good, growndswell, wikinomics, crowdsourcing, etc etc. Getting too repetitive?
There is just something wrong about having to pay for identity theft... a problem created by credit card companies themselves... and now they want money to help me save myself from this problem! Why should i have to pay someone else to monitor my credit? Should'nt the EVIL card companies provide it?
I am shocked to learn about all the companies that keep your background and finance history. We thought it was just the three credit reporting agencies right? Guess what there is also choicepoint and scores of others that keep a tab on your every information from birth to date! People talk about privacy & identity in social media -- I think these companies scare me much more than my email/friend list being leaked/hacked from some web 2.0 sites.
- FallStreet
Oh, and BTW Choicepoint also acts as a private investigator to the govt.(via Wikipedia)
- FallStreet
There is much wrong with the credit industry, from LIBOR based rates to using the FICO scores to calculate creditworthiness. Not sure what the fix will be, but an ideology shift is required.

One small thing you can do is ... opt out from receiving pre-approved offers at https://www.optoutprescreen.com/. Seems legit. Not sure if it'll stop those banks who already have your info and keep sending you new offers (or the same) every f#$%ing week.
- priyang
@priyang yep! I have signedup for that but it still does not eliminate all the junk. And the information trail goes beyond just the credit rating companies. Did you know that the insurance companies share a lot of information via choicepoint? The real problem is the lack of accountability of your own data. I have no clue where all my sensitive information is recorded and further propagated. I feel that isnt right!

i was a victim of id theft...it took 8 months of my time and money to clean it up.
- .LAG liked that
@.LAG shucks! that really sucks! So what did you have to do in order to clean it up?How did you find out about it? Did you have to spend a lot of money as well? 8 months is agonizing amount of frustration man... sorry to hear that.
- FallStreet
my id theft story: i'll post it on my blog and hit the URL back here shortly...I think it's instructive.

We've started taking the insurance and registration out of our cars when we park them overnight. The big thing in Dallas now is stealing paperwork. These guys are &#%$heads.
- Ha3rvey (F please!)
that sucks man. mine was broken into last month too.
- AJ Batac (/-_-)
For some reason, I was having a string of tire issues too. Even had the donut on the car and the little bastards still took the jack. I think they might have been pissed because there wasn't anything worth stealing. :)
- Yolanda
Sorry to hear that, Akshay. My car had been broken into twice before I moved to a different part of town. First time they stole nearly $1,300 worth of audio equipment. Second time they just took my cheap Sony head unit. Probably out of spite.
- Akiva
You know my last tag was "JAVA 1" yeah! seriously that IS my last name. Well, on the bright side in a few months hopefully I can register a shiny new toy with a tag "Dr. JAVA" :-D and this time I am gonna WELD it to my car -- I dont care if it drops in value. I cant afford to have that tag stolen! :-)
- FallStreet
Talking about car thieve b*s: a friend of mine stays in dowtown Baltimore. These a*@#$%es stole the car muffler and since they knew that the muffler would be soon replaced with a brand new one -- came right back and stole it AGAIN the next week!!
- FallStreet
Now *that* is evil, Akshay. Rat bastards!
- Yolanda
Too bad your stereo was already stolen...otherwise you could have set it up to play "na na naa naa naaaaa naaaaaa, ha ha haa haa haaaaa haaaaaa" in Cartman voice 2 minutes after someone breaks in to steal something.

Hi Jorge - I don't know you, but our interests brought us into this conversation - thanks Social Media!
- Steve Isaacs
Okay guys you're at the cutting edge right now, here on FriendFeed. The blog used to enable the conversation via comments, but this sucked. So Twitter then enabled conversation in real-time, but also sucked because the conversation stream couldn't be tracked easily. But now friendfeed enables conversations, real-time threaded topics, and also sharing of media, social bookmarking, links and more. So this is where its at, and this is where we are all best connected. We can communicate better and faster here.

My students are fairly resistant to SM though I plan to inflict it upon them yet again this year. Any suggestions for getting them excited about micro-blogging and social sharing would be appreciated. I will say that I've learned so much participating on FFd, Digg, Plurk, etc. that I otherwise wouldn't have encountered. THANK YOU!
- Kimberly J
maybe start with explaining them how they can use networking to cheat within the classes.. than they might get really interested ;) Good luck with the project..
- Jaap Willem
Here is a link to the social web technologies class blog at UMBC http://socialwebtechnologies.blogspot.com/ I would say starting a group class blog is a great idea -- get your students on friendfeed, flickr, twitter and stuff! They will love it!

How about a group bookmarking network using delicious or diigo so you can find online reading resources for each other, tag them, make notes etc. How about creating a wiki on a subject together. Collaborative learning anyone? Watch Mike Wesch's portal to media literacy for some great education ideas using social media: http://www.youtube.com/watch...

Freebase is a machine and human readable repository of information that is harvested from different sources like WIkipedia, manually entered information and from other sites that provide structured and semi-structured data. It has an ontology in the background so things can be mapped to a concept. Everything is editable so people can correct and help evolve the knowledge base. Using...

@ankit PicLens also works on the Mac. I've been using it for a while now, and it's wonderful! ;)

I think it's not the legal issue because there are quite many image search engines that provide slide show (or similar) functionality.
- Daniel Schildt
@Daniel. Which ones? They might be too small for site owners to go after, so might be getting away with it. None of the 4 major search engines: Google, Live, Yahoo, Ask have image slideshows for this reason.
- Nikhil Dandekar
@Ankit - Yup piclens totally rocks, i've been using it for youtube for a few weeks :)
- Krishna Gade
Oh... I have seen several of those but forgot since I didn't bookmark them to del.icio.us. :P

Benedikt: That java applet fails to run for me on Mac/Safari. Are you using a PC?
- Mitchell Tsai
Yes, I'm using a PC. But I think, I do the visuals in Flash. But I have to learn ActionScript first, so don't expect any results before tomorrow ;-)

Igor, there always is some amount of redundany in any network. So you could unsubscribe from quite a number of people on FF and still get their updates as Friend-of-a-Friend-updates. You could even create new proxy users that subscribe to different circles of people (e.g. work/family) and by (un)subscribing these proxies change your FF experience.
- Benedikt Koehler
I'd like to see this, but alas I am on Mac OS X running Firefox 3.

Andrew, I'm sorry. But I'm working on a Flash version right now.
