Fry's adds significant value to everything they sell. They added 5, in this case.
- DGentry
Wow - you're already running 15.6? Yeah - I'd say that counts. :-)
- Jesse Stay
so they are making this a regular deal?! $27.99 for OS upgrades :)
- Shivanand Velmurugan
what's the issue here? i am not a mac guy please educate me thank you
- Allen Stern
@Allen: Let's just say it's still OS X and not OS XV.
- Absentee
Louis, I'd like an invite. But let me guess, this version is build for laptop hardware that only has one button. No wait! ZERO buttons. Or ZenButton as the engineering team likes to call it. :P
- Micah
Micah, I'm buying a game for my kids this Christmas that hooks up to their head and they make a ball float using just their mind. We're already there, man. :-)
- Jesse Stay
I bought mine friday at Frys, after taxes: $30.50
- Ray Cromwell
Still a PC ... but looks cheap ... for Apple :)
- Charlie Anzman
Haha, they've gone back to CD-ROMs for upgrades, too? I guess they must have rewritten everything in x86-64 assembler... I'm sure my copy came on a dual-layer DVD containing over 7GB of data... ;)
- Tyson Key
Dear Somebody Awesome, Please build a Google Reader Shared Items directory similar to WeFollow. I'd like to find more like minded people to add to my sharing list. <3, Erica
Yes, I'm aware that thread and it is precisely *why* I want a directory. I love friendfeeders but the fact remains that I (and others) probably don't want to read everything everyone in that thread has to share. :)

strange reporting! passes? as if it were a quality thing, it is most certain given the variety of people using flickr and how many are have specialty cameras, strange comparison a 10 mp vs a 2 mp, a general purpose vs a specialty camera, a 300 vs 500 dollar, a popular phone vs a pro camera?
- testbeta
would have been interesting if it were opposite... canon passing iphone
- testbeta
This afternoon, I get a comment: "horrible looking blog you have here sir." so I click through to the author's Web site and it's here: http://www.artificialweb.net/ (Clearly, they are experts)
Wow. I wish they would design my sites. [/sarcasm]
- Jonathan Hardesty
From the same person (I think) on August 6: "Can you consider changing your blog layout? is just ugly and so 2003. btw, why not wordpress or something more hip, instead of a free platform. Geez!! your blog looks is just disgusting for a 2009 social media blog. thank you!"
- Louis Gray
Maybe louisgray.com just needs some animated emoticons... He seems to have that down
- Johnny
:) :P :( ... they need to lose the emoticons
- anna sauce
Or make it all flash, and get rid of all perma-links or anything that google could spider. That would bring you into the modern times of the intarwebz. :)
- Jonathan Hardesty
Maybe if you ask him nicely, he will design your next blog for you!
- Jim Connolly
"why not wordpress or something more hip, instead of a free platform"? Wordpress charges now? They have leverage the use of "default" very nicely.
- Adam Helweh
The thing that makes me laugh the hardest... we probably just tripled his monthly visitor numbers all because LG dropped the bitch slap :)
- Johnny
Based on that comment from August 6: He is obviously a social media expert...
- Jemm
He's also an expert on the English language. "Hi! My name is Stalyn, I currently live in NYC, majoring in Human Services. You might be wondering what the hell I’m doing talking about web development since Human Services doesn’t have nothing to do with programming."
- Gilbert Harding
so its true then - beauty is in the eye of the beholder :) who would have guessed!
- Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
Can someone link to his comment please.
- Jim Connolly
I'm surprised there wasn't a blink tag
- anna sauce
Well, he may not be an expert (and I´m certainly not) but, IMHO, he still has a point about the design being a bit dated, Louis (but so is your nemesis´s early tumblelog-like design).. www.louisgray.com may benefit from a little TLC other than the great content. Just my 2p as long as the topic is up for discussion here. (His name is Stalin?! That explains his social abilities I guess..;)
- ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
::blinks at the guy's site:: Um. Look, don't look now, dude, but Textism did the minimal look about 1024x better. Oh, and, like, don't quit your day job. A-and, also, sir, not to be blunt, but your social skills are those of a twelve y/o boy who discovered girls right around the time they started hating on his insufferably bad manners. Kthxbuhbye.
- Absentee
If you don't have any haters, you're not being aggressive enough. (I don't have any haters).
- DGentry
LOLZZzzz though your logo Louis the LG, does need a bit more pizzazzz
- sofarsoShawn <Oh HAI!>
Louis, I refuse to visit your site again until you put an animated GIF of a mailbox with a letter coming out. How in the heck am I suppose to know how to send you e-mail, for crying out loud!? WHERE DO I CLICK>!@
- Akiva
I think white space is important to them :)
- Owen Greaves
my advise: ignore assholes - it just wastes your time and energy!
- Susan Beebe
from BuddyFeed
ZOMG!!!!!111! DO ANYBODY NO WHERE THE ANIMATED GIFS ARE? AND, I WANT MOAR GLITTER!
- Richard Walker
Don't forget the spinning globes, the animated JavaScript starfield background, and the JavaScript glittery crap that follows the cursor. Bonus points if you can add an ugly '90s style hit counter, too. ;)
- Tyson Key
For maximum awfulness, just add a scrolling <marquee> full of pink text in Comic Sans MS, and as many animated emoticons as possible. Bonus points if at least 3 copies exist on the page, scrolling in alternate directions, and at least 1 also contains a <blink> element.
- Tyson Key
...and of course, the obligatory "Download BonziBuddy Now!" button. ;)
- Tyson Key
Louis - How about when someone scrapes your content (lock, stock, and barrel ...) manages to make page one of Google (someone please cue Matt Cutts ?? ... ) and then makes it look better?! (Ugh!) http://www.eblogzone.net/seo-tec....
- Charlie Anzman
It needs a .biz or .info domain name, to completely drain it of any credibility, too.
- Tyson Key
I didn't know .biz or .info necessarily made a site skeezy. Not everyone could make the .com domain name land rush.
- Spidra Webster
a long time ago. plus it was a test site. yet your blog looks horrible for a social media blog in 2009.
- Stalyn☂
Good point, Spidra, although given by how many content scraping sites and scammers/spammers utilise those TLDs, I usually tend to avoid sites using them.
- Tyson Key
Having read through all of these comments, the most intriguing are those from Thomas Bøhm and sofarsoShawn. Now I admittedly have no sense of style whatsoever, so I'm curious - if you were going to redesign Louis' blog, and his logo, what would you recommend?
- John E. Bredehoft
Louis's blog looks "functional" to me, for what it's worth. Of course, I tend to care more about content and community, than the chrome surrounding it.
- Tyson Key
Tyson Key not really, that thing is just ugly.
- Stalyn☂
Oh it's you, "Stalyn". You certainly lack class. What are you attempting here? New friends? A "reputation"? A joke?
- Richard Walker
BTW, "Stalyn," throwing around insults from behind a curtain of anonymity is WAY worse than a poorly designed "social media site." It implies you have no idea what "social media" is about.
- Richard Walker
I don't mind Stalyn's comments. Seeing him here is interesting as well. I recognize my blog is not fancy. It was customized quite a bit from the standard Blogger template, but I paid zip for that. I believe most of the access I get is through vanilla RSS. If I want to revamp the site at any point, we'll see what happens.
- Louis Gray
Wondering what Stalyn's background is to have credibility to even criticize (if you call that criticism).
- Jesse Stay
Hah! Clearly it's worked for them. How else could they get any traffic?
- BLOGBloke
...something about: it takes one to know one... and those guys apparently know all about ugly Web sites! .LOLz!
- .LAG liked that
@John E. Bredehoft: Again, I´m nowhere near an expert on web design and I bet Louis has access to far more professional advice and won´t put much value into this anyway, but since you ask I would at least lose most of the dotted lines and the windows xp style bullets everywhere, which are all just unnecessary noise (and adds to the "datedness"). Perhaps even the rounded corners (as they...

- ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
Interesting perspective, Thomas. I hadn't even noticed the dotted lines (they're fairly subtle). I definitely like the colors (although that's a personal preference, possibly) - seems very readable to me. Louis' site definitely looks better than the barely-modified Blogger template that I use on my blogs. If Stalyn were to look at my sites, his frownies and blinks would be on overload...
- John E. Bredehoft
You have every right to be as good-natured and forgiving as you are, Louis. I, however.... :) ... like to sanity-check whether those in the kitchen can stand the heat.
- Richard Walker
@ Blog Bloke: I don't need no traffic genius, is just a testing site, i already stated that. @ Louis is nothing personal at all.
- Stalyn☂
@ Richard Walker, your post is irrelevant because there is no heat where I'm cooking from. Anyways, i don't need no hits or to promote anything from this, not even my twitter. I was just saying what was on my mind. I personally think Louis is capable of having a better looking blog at this point.
- Stalyn☂
"“I’ll be honest, I’m not a blogger. I don’t use Twitter and at times I don’t understand all the hype about these forms of social media. However, after seeing these presentations, there is no doubt in my mind the importance of these new media platforms. It’s plain and simple — if you want to spread the word, you MUST uses these forms of social media.” — Liz Looney"

Wait until the twins start jumping around, better get a mouth guard. The wife and I have already chipped teeth, ours not theirs. Also a cup will be in order. But it is all good as long as they are having a good time.

I can't believe my stupid lip is still bleeding. Two hours ago this happened. :)
- Louis Gray
Ha! What a boy to headbutt you and laugh about it!!!!
- Martha
the head thing never stops, although it's the worst from around 6 months to 2 years. I think my nose is permanently damaged from repeated trauma from hard baby heads. They should be required to register them as lethal weapons. Just a few weeks ago I got the nastiest blow to my eyebrow area from the kid's head - my whole eyelid was discolored. (I think that might be the incident where he picked up the phrase, "what the f*ing heck?" - thankfully he's only said it once.)
- Laura Norvig
Needs a real time stream. And make groupings better.
- Sullivan
I think that , they ar on the road, now due to the recent feature on GR sendto specialy, none have asked the question: "why google isn't automating the service discovery" mean why they arn't making the choices of service to witch to send to, a user personalized one, let me be clear, they got SocialGraph, and Gprofile, if they use social graph they can easily find witch service a user X...
- abdellah
A) Needs realtime (+1 tomit), B) Needs non-reciprocal friending, C) Needs to get rid of the stupid add-to-group-to-allow-commenting thing, D) Needs FoaF, E) Needs to include selected images/text when sharing to FF. Those are my reactions after playing with it this morning.
- Jandy
Jandy, it does have non-recipricol friending... which I think actually may lead to a confusion and scalability problem for users (though it is still an essential feature)... several conversation threads on the same item, one after another, with different groups of people. Just imagine following hundreds ofm people there like we easily do on FF.
- Tinfoil 2.0
@jandy, GR is a read tool, not a write (ofcourse you can comment, like) but never initiate a thread unbased on a feed. they have to go upon this elementry probleme to clone the FF, but the most important question is: (are they trying to clone FF)
- abdellah
abdellah, you can originate anything... a note without a link, or... from a bookmarket, any arbitrary web page.
- Tinfoil 2.0
abdellah, you can add notes directly into GReader without them being attached to anything. EDIT: Or, what LE just said. And LE, yes, I can follow you without you following me, but if you don't follow me and add me to a comment-enabled group, I can't comment on what you share. That's what I meant. Really B) and C) of my complains go together.
- Jandy
@Jandy, now I see too, then this is why they are trying to make group and list so!
- abdellah
Prolific Programmer, I agree, the "like" on FriendFeed basically means "share with my FF followers" (as opposed to "share" on FriendFeed, which means either "create a new item on FF" or "share with other services"). I'm not sure what "like" means on GReader, as they seem to have both those functions in "share" and the new "send to".
- Jandy
I kind of like the GR Like feature... it's shows how many total people using GReader 'Like'd the item, regardless of whether you are contacts with them or not... potentially good for discovery. As far as I can tell, GR Likes are always public, even if your shares and comments are not [yes, verified by GOOG, Likes are public: http://googlereader.blogspot.com/2009...]
- Tinfoil 2.0
True, it's okay for seeing aggregate approval. But then again, it depends so much on how popular the feed is. Like, Techcrunch has so many readers that it's going to get a lot of likes. But something like film professor David Bordwell's blog Observations on Film Art doesn't have any likes - not because it's not awesome (it is), but because it just doesn't have the same kind of reach.
- Jandy
Yeah, probably will be more useful for discovery on smaller sites, assuming more people jump on the GR bandwagon. I hope so anyway.
- Tinfoil 2.0
@LE the feature you reffer to (the one in the blog post) (search people) guess what, I mainly using GR in FR not english and never saw it!! hope that they will make it aivble for all the language.
- abdellah
last argument, the current thread is about a shared feed (shared by GR), the question is why we are getting this discussion here and not at GR?!!
- abdellah
Because we all love FF too much! But I'm sure @jenna is reading all of these posts over the last week with great interest, and I'm sure we'll see continuing enhancements to GR :)
- Tinfoil 2.0
@LE let say because FF UI is more conversation oriented then GR., in GR social feature seem to be not very heigligthed.
- abdellah
Conversations happen wherever the community wants them to. They can happen here, on other shares of the item, on Google Reader, or on the original blog.
- Louis Gray
I agree louis, the community prime, but the tool made the community too, for a long time GR was a personal tool a personnal feed reader, the transition isn't that easy.
- abdellah
Remember too that Likes, Comments and all the rest of the social GR features are only a month (or less) old.
- Tinfoil 2.0
argh the ads are driving me crazy! I'm using chrome :(
- BEX
I want to use more Google Reader, we want to implement it more .It overcome friendfeed.

Who knew babies could dance like this? "I’m not a fan of either bottled water or industry advertising, but the sheer genius creativity of this commercial still makes it worth watching.
