My Thoughts on Last Night's Game Against the Dolphins | LockerBlogger | By Chris Harris
"Oh man... what a tough loss last night.  We had a chance to win it - we really did - but we just didn't play the way we should've played. In the first quarter, we played well defensively, but after that, we couldn't really get off the field on the 3rd down.  There were just too many long drives on us.  Obviously, the game didn't unfold the way we planned it to, so this one's definitely a tough pill to swallow." - Chris Harris NFL from Bookmarklet

At Virginia Tech, Thursday night games create a commotion
"Some faculty members interviewed for this story said that while there has been no official mandate handed down by the school, it has been implicitly suggested that they cancel afternoon classes before Thursday night games in order to clear campus parking lots. While students may welcome an early start to the weekend, such a notion does not sit well with those who say it sends a message that athletics are more important than academics. "I'm highly annoyed by the misplaced emphasis on athletics at the university," Jan Helge Bohn, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech, said in a telephone interview. "It infuriates me. The fact I have to move my car and go home and terminate work is outrageous in an academic community."" - chaz2b from Bookmarklet
We had all kinds of parking issues surrounding home games when I was in college (99-2005). If I remember correctly the commuter lots were blocked off on Friday mornings so that the prepaid pre-registered RVs could take "our" spots. We just parked further out and walked in on those days. - Daniel J. Pritchett

"She will testify before the House Judiciary Committee at its hearing on football brain injuries on Wednesday to, as she put it, “tell the truth about what’s going on while I still have the chance.” Culverhouse has blood cancer and renal failure and has been told she has six months to live. “I’ve got to see that someone stops this debacle before it gets any worse,” said Culverhouse, 62, the daughter of the former owner Hugh Culverhouse who held various executive positions from 1985 to 1994. “I watched our team do anything it could to get players back on the field. We have to make that right.”" - Bill Sodeman from Bookmarklet

"Do you see this sign? I fished this sign out of a garbage can outside FedEx Field. It was in the garbage can because there's a new policy that says no signs of any sort are permitted inside the stadium. Even signs sending best wishes to husbands in Afghanistan. When and why was this change made? I asked Monday morning, and as of Monday evening, a Redskins spokesman said he still wasn't sure. I just know that there was a policy listed on the team's Web site as recently as Oct. 4 that merely banned inappropriate and offensive signs, or something to that effect, and that as of now, that wording is gone." - Bill Sodeman from Bookmarklet
They said no signs, I'm ok with that. I get the sympathy for vets and their families, but they can always send him a card or call him or make a YouTube video or any number of things that don't involve coopting the stadium+network tv pipeline. - Daniel J. Pritchett

ESPN vs. Deadspin: Sports-Media Spat Turns Ugly Online - TIME
"On the day that the New York Post broke the news of Steve Phillips' dalliances and the bizarre behavior of his 22-year-old mistress, the influential Deadspin fired a wild shot at one of the world's most powerful sports brands. Deadspin editor A.J. Daulerio, feeling that an ESPN communications source had misled him about the truth of the Phillips story over a month ago (a claim that ESPN fiercely denies), took it upon himself to air alleged dirty laundry about ESPN employees. "It's probably about time to just unload the inbox of all the sordid rumors we've received over the years about various ESPN employees," he posted. "Chances are, at this point, there's some truth to them . . . So, Bristolites [ESPN is based in Bristol, Conn.], strap in — it's going to be a long day."" - Bill Sodeman from Bookmarklet

Is anyone else sick of Fox's shitty NFL coverage? Giants-Saints in *stereo* with no surround? Are you fucking kidding me? I've also found their video quality to be significantly below CBS (the best, IMO), ESPN/ABC and NBC. Could they please sell their broadcast rights to a network that's actually serious about quality feeds?

I watched the game on my New Jersey Slingbox, so surround sound isn't a big deal for me... - Bill Sodeman
I actually love the Fox games the best -- they give me the best HD signal, they have my favourite anchors, Terry Bradshaw, Michael Strahan, et al., and I like their graphics WAAY better than CBS. ABC's graphics aren't bad but their broadcast team is the WORST. - Shey
CBS quality near me is horrific. The picture is so dark and the colors so dull it's sad. Fox on the other hand has the brightest image and most vibrant colors - I don't know if they are tweaking them but it is much better watching FOX NFL than anyone else (though NBC picture quality is about the same). - Bill Rawlinson
If it's a Seahawks game, I wouldn't mind if the greens are dull. :) - Bill Sodeman
I prefer the Sunday Night games on NBC, great HD and play by play team. Hate the in studio team. - Jason Benway

""I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said, in a quote I'm likely to recycle 7,000 times in the next week or so. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."" - Amani from Bookmarklet
free speech doesn't apply much in a private venue. If these guys were inside a 7-11 telling people that they shouldn't the hot-dogs from 7-11 the owners of the 7-11 could have them removed and nobody would bat an eye. The same should hold true here; a football stadium is a private place of business (though it is often funded by government bonds which makes it a little more of a gray issue) and the business owner can remove "customers" (so long as they don't base their judgement on race/gender/etc). - Bill Rawlinson

ABC's Griese apologizes for Montoya 'taco' remark (USATODAY.com) — no matter what, the hate leaks out...

Montoya had the best response (paraphrasing): "I don't know who he is, and I don't care." - .LAG liked that
is it really 'hate'? it seems that stereotypes are celebrated by many and are often used as unifying sources of pride and belonging. the response that Montoya gave was perfect, like you said. If things get so uptight with the media ready to jump on any small comment and magnify it to get ratings, then the walls around the groups will grow stronger, we will turn more toward those most like ourselves, and in the end, the thing we were trying to prevent will be the thing that consumes us all. - Morgan
It's hate. It's ignorance. Sick and tired of these people making the "I didn't mean it *that* way speech". Yeah, they did. It's how they talk. - Anika

i feel that if someone is dumb enough or so out of touch with the world, that they actually think things like this, and in some cases actually, SAY these things out loud, then they should not backpedal and try to talk their way out of things like most of them do. Say what you want to say. Say it with conviction, or don't bother. Then stand behind what you said. either that, or just shut up to begin with. - Morgan
I agree that it has hateful undertones. Also think it shows Griese's sheer ignorance. Montoya is Columbian. Columbian is not the same as Mexican - and it's insulting to imply that it's all the same or similar. - Patrick Jordan
some things are better left unsaid, especially when you have a megaphone that reaches millions, as an ABC college football broadcast certainly does. I may have over-reached saying that "hate" is leaking out, but there is certainly ignorance there, and I'm thinking that if you're going to make a statement that dumb, it's sliding perilously towards bigotry, which is heading down a hateful... more... - .LAG liked that
