I swear every single person at the Half Moon Bay Ritz right now has an iPhone.
Are you taking a survey or something? - Eric
Very scary! - Eric
We need another device besides iPhone :) - Eric
Eric: everyone is fingering theirs. It is a weird behavior. One that I am joining. :-) oh and this Ritz is one of the best hotels in the world: http://corporate.ritzcarlton.com/en... - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Well, prefer to see iPhones than seeing WinMo phones! :P - Rom Feria

Is there an event going on? - Spencer Schoeben
Sounds like you are in good company ! :) - Zahoor
Robert, any chance in hell they (Apple) ever develop one with a REAL keyboard? Deal breaker for me and tons of others I know...all smartphone users. LOVE the apps (bought my fiancee a 3GS about two months ago) but basic functionality is a deal killer. I got big fingers! New software update is STILL tough and a deal breaker. - Dan Ross
I just need some funding and genius tech people like Scobleizer to build it :) - Eric
Looks like the Ritz is a fun place to stay :) - Eric
So Robert, when are you going to host a conference at the HMB Ritz? - Jesse Stay
What the Ritz is giving away iPhones! ..... Definitely an over popular phone. - Kyle Thomas

So, if I am in HMB, I should look for you at the Ritz? :-) I miss going to the Pumpkin Fest. - Larry Walker

Robert Scoble
I wish Twitter would sell to Google so it would die like Jaiku and Dodgeball. But I won't post this over on Twitter. I really don't have much love for the service, even though I know I'll be stuck using it for the indefinite future. Jesse Stay has it figured out. It's a horrid place to try to communicate anything other than a bit of self pimping.
Here I can write the equivilent of an entire blog post. And even make changes. And even have a conversation. And use it as many times an hour as I want (Twitter rate limits my apps after a while cause I'm too heavy of a user). - Robert Scoble
werd. - imabonehead
I can sense already that FriendFeed is slowing down now that it is joining Facebook, while Twitter still has the best flow (and best system for following people and best mobile clients). So, we're stuck with Twitter, which is too bad, because the technology here is a ton better. - Robert Scoble
Twitter is a piece of crap - BUT it's where the audience is (currently). - Jim Connolly
Now it is starting to feel like FF again with you bigging it up again Robert ;) - Travis Koger
Twitter is the new MySpace. - imabonehead
Maybe google wave will change the way we use twitter, etc. again. Haven't tried it yet, but it might succeed where friendfeed "failed" - getting enough people to use it. - Frank S.
Travis: I had to go and clean out my Twitter and Facebook accounts and spread out my usage. - Robert Scoble
Agreed! - Friendfeed is so much better (for as long as it really lasts in Facebook world...) - Matthew Blaisdell from iPhone
Robert: I'm thinking of setting up a facebook account for my Marketing blog - what do you think? - Jim Connolly
@Scobleizer I don't think Friendfeed would be quite so popular if it weren't for twitter - Prolific Programmer from IM
Twitter is the new Myspace - HAHA - this quote made my day. For me it is just becoming a multiplicator for my friendfeed but it is important for that! - Sascha Pallenberg
Prolific: I'm not so sure. Blogs made Twitter. So, what if there were no Twitter? We would still talk up something else. But maybe FriendFeed wouldn't have thrived anyway. Twitter hit a sweet spot with its easy to program API, it's easy to use interface, and its cute name and branding. - Robert Scoble
Twitter works extremely well on mobile devices. I constantly see people tweeting whereas it's more difficult to do with FriendFeed's interface for a typical user. - imabonehead
Really think that Twitter is annoying it's users too much. There's some problems out there that are really being ignored. Here's an example of a problem that could be solved very simply, but no action is being taken (if it was solved it'd create a lot of goodwill) http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter... - Edd McArdle
Robert, now that FriendFeed's people are working for Facebook, and since Facebook has already been making changes to make it more "open socially", do you think eventually that Facebook will become the best place to have serious conversations? - Carlton Hackett
Carlton: yes. - Robert Scoble
I've been thinking so too. Although, I wonder how the non-Soc/net junkies will respond to that? - Carlton Hackett
Robert, two thoughts. #1 - do you think Google really would let it die? Acquiring Twitter would be more like its YouTube acquisition than Jaiku (in terms of price and # of users). Secondly, what would Twitter have to change for you to change your opinion? - Ben Parr
I really, really, really want Twitter to work out is the thing. It's just a pain in the neck to communicate without either losing the conversation or spamming useless banter over multiple Tweets because you can't fit it in 140 characters. That's just my experience. Those still spending most their time there don't mind it I guess. - Jesse Stay
I like Twitter. The conversation flows pretty well for me, and to be fair, I get more @replies there than I get replies here to my posts. - Chris Nixon
I think a combination of the Retweet API and a true threaded replies architecture and UI could change some of my opinion on that though if they do it. - Jesse Stay
Jesse: It's NOT just your experience. Twitter is getting less valuable the bigger it gets. The spam / porn / bots issue is insane and ruining the experience. - Jim Connolly
Chris: I have a twitter account with over 20,000 followers and get ten times as many replies here as I get there. Here I only have a small following. The calibre of people I connect with here is better too. - Jim Connolly
Jesse, have Twitter improved their communication with developers since you wrote about it in April? - Edd McArdle
Edd, over the last week I have noticed a difference, yes, but it's hard to tell if it will remain that way. They now seem to have a project manager over the API dev team (Ryan Sarver). He seems to be putting a filter on some things and keeping devs updated elsewhere. They're still learning though, much slower than FB or FriendFeed. - Jesse Stay
agree on spam and bots, but it still is a nice little thing, if it remains what it was made for! marketing and reviewing thing isn't/shouldn't be there, true friendfeed is more effective as a tool for sending your message across, it is simple and strong - testbeta
Testbeta: ... and FF works. - Jim Connolly
Jim, Jesse, Robert: Value varies. For me, Twitter value continues to increase. I use it to find out what's happening, meet up with people, get random insights into how people are doing, find new people. It all works well. There are many different use cases and one tool does not have to do them all. - Rachel Clarke
i couldn't agree more! - lilian
Rachel: "It all works well"? Really? Twitter? - Jim Connolly
Rachel, I agree with you. I just don't think Twitter works well for conversations, that's all. I use FriendFeed and Facebook for that. I use Twitter for different purposes, and I agree it does still have value. - Jesse Stay
sometimes i think of Automattic's intense debate, but well friendfeed is intense debate, such a experience was never had on blogs, the commenting, liking, and so fast it propagates, even disqus commenting systems can't achieve what we have here on friendfeed, but i can't just throw away twitter, twitter still is good, true for the serious types it's word limit, reply system is a bit of... more... - testbeta
I would love to have FriendFeed as the commenting system on my blog. - Chris Nixon
Chris, there are a few plugins that do that. I haven't tried them though. - Jesse Stay
Chris: Check out what Scoble's doing with FF on building43.com - Jim Connolly
Jim: yes. It works well for what I want it to do (I'm ignoring the ongoing issues with the DDOS). It's a free tool that adds far more value than it costs me to wait for odd outage. - Rachel Clarke
Just checked your Twitter account and now understand exactly what you are saying. - Jim Connolly
Jesse: agree, I use Facebook, Friendfeed, blogs, comments etc, all for different things. I even use the phone as a phone occasionally to talk with people ;-) But the assumption that one tool/service can do everything - and should do everything - is something I have a problem with. If something does not work for a person, don't use it. - Rachel Clarke
The twitter ecoverse is cool, can do Psychological Profiles, can do Social Network Analysis. All those services that spawned as a result are amazing. I am also amazed at how dense Asians Languages are on Twitter, think about it they get about 60% more per tweet. - Robert Higgins
Ben: at this point I am not sure what Twitter could do to win back my love. I will use it just like I use AT&T and United Airlines. I have very little love for those even though I use them frequently. Twitter wins because it is simple and flat and has great clients. I wouldn't cry if it disappeared, though. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
So why do you hate it? - Raanan Avidor
You are a hypocrite! I remember you use to sing the praises of Twitter all the time. Another toy comes along and you start bashing it. If I was Friendfeed management I would cancel your account now before you start bashing them. Robert Scoble is nothing but a follower of crowds anyway. - Paul L. McCord Jr.
You want it to die? Such an odd statement. I have met so many great people through Twitter, and the news information I can find through search or news agencies or even people who are newshounds are amazing. I know it's not perfect and the last few weeks have definately proved that, and the spam is just awful. But to want to kill it, what a strong statement. - PC Easy from twhirl
Twitter is not abot writing blog posts or having conversations, its about small pieces of information being communicated to anyone who wants to listen. You do not have to listen, if you want a conversation use a forum or FriendFeed, use WordPress for blog posts. Stop trying to make Twitter into something it is not designed to be. - Darren Rollett
I really used to like Twitter, still do sometimes. What I don't like is the Twitter hype. I don't seem able to turn on any media channel these days without reading/hearing or watching about it. Even the BBC reported that Twitter was under attack recently on the main BBC news. FFS come on, there must be more happening in the world than a micro blogging site with a few million users... more... - Nick Bristow
If you owned twitter would you sell to google? - cheapsuits from iPhone
Robert, Atleast something positive could come out of it. If Twitter sells to Google they might(though its not guaranteed) make it opensource and then a federation of twitter server(ala wave servers) can co-exist happily and that way we'll own our stuff(as Anil Dash and other points out). Or they might integrate it in Wave framework. Not that people are not gonna complain about it but thats a different topic. - Abhishek
Surely an improvement in the service would be a more positive wish? - Chris Nixon
Say what you want but something with the architecture of friendfeed is far more conversational then twitter could ever be. - cheapsuits
I don't know why people think Twitter is the place to converse. It's really not built for that. I find myself enjoying the flow of conversations more on Facebook and FriendFeed. - Naomi Williams
Self pimping? Hmmm... Perhaps not for all of us. And besides, self-pimping isn't limited to twitter. - @JonAston
PS - Maybe it's just me, but you seem bitter lately. Hope you turn that around for yourself. - @JonAston
Jon: You are right. People pimp on FriendFeed too; as I say in my new book.... :-) - Jim Connolly
@jim, they will do anywhere, this is human nature, they do even in real life, so why not in virtual one? - abdellah
Abdellah: Absolutely. - Jim Connolly
"(Twitter) It's a horrid place to try to communicate anything other than a bit of self pimping." AMEN - Alejandro
Personally I wish Google would buy both Facebook and Twitter so they could both die. - Brian Sullivan
@brian, hey where could I read to you then?!! - abdellah
@Frank S. Google Wave will only be valid if you actually have other friends/collegues who use Google Wave. Otherwise you'll be using it with the *crickets* - Naomi Williams
Oh yeah -- forgot that due to circumstances beyond our control FF is now Facebook. ;-) - Brian Sullivan
oh yeah , they share the same vision, they got the same perception... - abdellah
It's the ff interface (developers) that make it great, but it's really you guys and gals, the people friendfeed attracted that make it valuable to me. Let's consider a real migration to a more reliable long term social media. It has to be open (data portable, unsellable) to get my trust - Mark Essel from iPhone
I hope the FaceBook people will take comments like these to heart. I do like twitter but the functionality FriendFeed brought was the next generation in stream notification. - Chris Jackson
Ohh time to pimp Jim's new book on Twitter ;) - Mark Essel from iPhone
Mark: Yeah - all I need is a title. Oh, and a book....and the time to write one....then I will be pimping like a pro! - Jim Connolly
Wow Robert, I was thinking this the past few days and could never bring it to words...well done - Braden Douglass
Jim: I'm time bankrupt but love sharing and collaborating. Let's hire a ghostwriter to capture our best ideas in an intelligible manner :). Joking of course, there's no easy way to spread our thoughts but doing it ourselves - Mark Essel from iPhone
I was gonna call the Funky Phantom. (That really dates me.) - Jim Connolly
Robert, I challenge you to stop using Twitter for a month and then blog about the experience. And that includes hiding all Tweets in FF. - Mike Doeff from iPhone
Lets face it, Twitter was built as an update service - a big Internet megaphone. The natural transition has been from update service to marketing service. Big Internet Megaphone. It's good at that, but it's not at conversations nor at discovery. The larger problem is people still approach Twitter like a true social engagement tool - and it's simply not. The disconnect between perception and reality results in the poor adoption numbers and other soft metrics. - AJ Kohn
twitter is noise. filter it and you can find some gold. imho, that's beyond mere self-pimpage - Rob Schieber
Agreed Rob. I'd prefer semantic algorithms applied to all tweets. I'm interested in real time search and datamining. And semantic extraction on all status would allow for real time "sorting" - Mark Essel from iPhone
i'd love to meetup with fellows and see what api scraping is going on - know where threads are for that? - Rob Schieber
Idk, This seems so much better then twitter. - SeanParnell
It does have a lot of noise, granted - but if it went away now, I'm not sure where everyone would run to. Facebook is too silly, Linkedin is too stolid, and everything else is too fractured for me to communicate with all the people I want to in a single shot. Guess I'd end up doing everything through ping.fm after all. - Ciaoenrico
Wow, Isn't online chit-chat such a fuss? :) - SeanParnell
Robert, just a week or two you were saying that Twitter is beating FriendFeed because of scanability http://friendfeed.com/scoblei.... And you had lots of complaints about the FriendFeed user interface. You also talked about how Twitter was much better after you un-followed everyone and hand picked who you're following. I have to ask, what has changed in the past few days to make you say that the service should die? Feels like you're flip flopping. - Mike Doeff
Can't you apply for extended API limits? - Tristan Seligmann
love the single post/status page, i mean like this: http://twitter.com/twitter... - testbeta
I noticed that in the past two weeks, the tweet intensity has greatly decreased from all my follows in Twitter. Granted, I'm not following too many, but the ones I do follow have traditionally tweeted a lot each day. Is this a trend (has Twitter become a has been) or is this simply a coincidental anomaly? - Jeff Sayre
Robert I find myself on friendfeed more these days - (jeff)isageek
@brian would you consider myspace if both facebook and twitter die?!!(ps: sorry I forget the LOL) - abdellah
Myspace -- don't know. I haven't really tried or paid attention to it. But probably not -- isn't it Facebook like? Maybe usenet? ;-) - Brian Sullivan
brian, let forget all those techie and go irc :) - abdellah
IMO, people who don't like the limitations of Twitter and whine about it hampering them are using it wrong. Twitter is not a place to pimp your blog or drive traffic to your site. It is not an SEO tool. It's not a place for you to compete in order to get more 'followers'. If you've ever tried to do any of these things, or if you ever followed more than a few hundred people, then yes, no... more... - Otto
Well said Otto - Chris Nixon
Jesse Stay: you should stop complaining so much about twitter when you build an entire business based on their lack of functionality and other issues. - Mihai Secasiu
Mihai, I'm not complaining - they can do what they want. As I said I really want them to succeed. It's a matter of fact that they do have their flaws - I'm hoping to help them fix those, assuming they're listening at all. What are you doing to help Twitter get better? - Jesse Stay
it is like twitter if for what, where, when and friendfeed is for why, how - testbeta
Mike: just because I use a service doesn't mean I love it. I use ATT and United all the time and they suck too. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
And yes Twitter has some good things about it. Doesn't mean it is all good. Personally it is overused and overhyped and YES I am partially responsible. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Apostol I get value out of Twitter. You aren't listening. I get value out of AT&T too but it COULD be so much more. Chris I tried to be positive but Twitter just doesn't respond to positivity. Plus they are cynical AT BEST about their users. Read the Twittergate documents to see just how cynical they are. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Twitter was just there at the right time. It's not the best solution to the problem (microblogging), but it's good ~enough~. - Trent Hamm
You seriously think Twitter will die once it gets bought by a 'bigger' company? - Mike Shields
Mike: do you use Dodgeball? It was bought by Google. So was Jaiku. - Robert Scoble
Trent: did you just call Twitter the Microsoft of microblogging? Yeah, that's sorta what I was trying to say too! ;-) - Robert Scoble
I just find it amazing that all the early adopters get really snobby about Twitter now it is getting more mainstream. There is something snobby about people's attitude to Facebook as well. I'm not a fan of Facebook but I know more people who use Facebook than use Twitter or Friendfeed combined. Even my mum has a Facebook account but she'd never be on Twitter or Friendfeed. Twitter... more... - Paul Nash
I liked Pownce. I wonder what SixApart has cooking up for them. So there's really no chance for Plurk to make a comeback and take back the community? With all the outage problems Twitter has, I would think Plurk would try to capitalize on that. Guess not. - John Wang
now if the Google Reader team could just get their new commenting system streamlined and real-time ... :) - Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
Paul: it's not hard to understand if you are in our shoes. Here's why. When a company is young and struggling to get noticed, they love having early adopters. After all, that's the ONLY WAY a company gets to the next stage. I've never seen a company go straight to Oprah stage without getting early adopters excited. Then once the company gets enough traction they usually start mistreating the early adopters. In this case Twitter stabbed them in the back. Leo Laporte, for instance ... - Robert Scoble
...got me excited about Twitter and was THE REASON it was the big huge deal at that 2007 SXSW. He had more followers than Mashable last year. But did he get put on the Suggested User List? No. So now Mashable has more than a million and Leo has a knife in his back. And you think it's amazing that early adopters turn their backs on Twitter? Really now. - Robert Scoble
I don't see how Leo has a knife in his back. There was no preconceived notion that anyone would be added to that list. Who cares? He was fine before that list was created, and he can be just as fine now, and just as engaging. - Andru Edwards
Andru: when he was hyping up the service and telling his users to use it, he was getting something in return: being at the top of the follower lists. When Twitter artificially put its own people at the top of the follower lists, and handed out grants of followers (worth many hundreds of thousands of dollars, by the way -- Mashable has changed its entire business to be Twitter centric) they specifically dissed Leo and many others. Most of whom won't point it out in public. - Robert Scoble
Sadly true. I'm in much the same boat -- Twitter is a necessity for professionals and bloggers to stay on top of things, but other socialnets like Brightkite and FF are light years beyond it, which doesn't look to be changing any time soon. Don't even get me started on the spammers and the get-rich-quick'ers. - Ryan Meader
But before the SUL was released, didn't Leo abandon Twitter in favor of Jaiku, due to Twitter having "Twit" as part of its name? Just saying, if I owned a list that I had complete control over, and someone showed that behavior towards me (whether it was right or wrong, I am not judging), I would think twice before putting them on a list that will result in many people seeing they they... more... - Andru Edwards
I can't agree with you more, Robert. - Jon Ursenbach
Scobe: I very much disagree that it is about self pimping. Perhaps your senses are mush because you follow too many? I absolutely love getting that link to a new article or research, or to get a tweet from that celeb that makes me think and provides insight into a new world. I also use it as a research tool, for exploratory purposes. Twitter, as you know very well, is about what you make it, and that is a tenuous notion that really is influenced by who you follow. - Chad Gesser
Andru: again, the list did NOT exist in the days when we were hyping up Twitter. So, there was a "promise" to early adopters that if they invested time in the service they could be at the top of the follower lists. Sort of how PlayFoursquare is today promising users that they can become mayors of places they frequent more than anyone else. What Twitter did was the equivilent of PlayFoursquare telling everyone that their "mayorship" doesn't matter anymore and that Oprah is now mayor of everywhere. - Robert Scoble
Chad: one thing you have to remember about me is that I see that Twitter has 1,001 uses. Stop seeing the world as black and white. This is one post I'm making about Twitter among thousands. Translation: I already agreed with you. But you have to admit that many people use Twitter for self promotion. - Robert Scoble
Andru: and anyway, the SUL is hardly the only reason to diss Twitter. Twitter still goes down all the time, it still has stupid rate limits. It still can't block spam effectively. It still has no friend management. It still has no features that didn't exist a year ago. And it is, in many respects, behaving worse. I'm hearing from developers that Twitter is becoming more closed, not more open (to monetize) and we're seeing them pick winners before the marketplace is done (bit.ly anyone?) - Robert Scoble
The nice thing about Twitter is that it keeps your message short and to the point. Friendfeed is great but it doesn't lend itself well to an external app out of the browser. Also FriendFeed and any of these services you don't own your content - Seth Goldstein
Seth: bing! So, back to the blog we will go. Except, why are we still here? ;-) - Robert Scoble
Awww Twitter the "me" network :) - Wayne Sutton from iPhone
Anyone tried Streamy? - cheapsuits
because the interraction is in real time - abdellah
Wayne: retweet me. :-) abdellah: I thought it was because of all the sex. ;-) - Robert Scoble
that was my expectation too ;) - abdellah
I like friendfeed because of its realtimeyness, but I like twitter because it requires you to be concise. I have seen some brilliant tweets done in 140 characters or less. I think that's always been the allure of twitter, its sheer simplicity. How many features can you add to twitter without actually changing the core of what twitter is? - Tomy Thomson
Robert: But what do you want from these companies ? Chaps like you give them the oxygen of publicity they need and they court you and then when they become successful you suddenly start to criticise them. Friendfeed has become successful (in great part to your endless plugging of it) and the founders will now go on to make money through their company being taken over by Facebook. You,... more... - Paul Nash
Scoble: no doubt....I can deal with the self promotion, the e marketing and spam garbage though to me is what has gooootttt to go - Chad Gesser
Paul: my role in life is to use what will be, not what is. I don't turn on many companies, but Twitter isn't one that dealt with early adopters on good faith. - Robert Scoble
nick: I explained why above. - Robert Scoble
Is there a "social media" company that has dealt with early adopters in "good faith"? Facebook, FriendFeed, Flickr I suspect don't qualify ? Any that do? - Brian Sullivan
all platforms seem to have self pimpering styles, why so passionate against twitter? Objectional question, not one of rhetoric. - nick tadd
Brian: I didn't know that any of those have actively dissed their best early adopters. Facebook kicked me off, but only because I broke the TOS. It's always been straight up with me. Same with Flickr, although I do watch Thomas Hawk's talk about their censorship. - Robert Scoble
none as brian says, they all deal with them, and "the earlier adopter" contribute to their evolution until they sell (sorry) - abdellah
nick: because it's so prevalent there. "Look at my blog post about xxx" is almost a staple on Twitter. It's a new RSS reader. Which is fine, I use it too for that! :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert, I think you may have the makings for one of your future blogs here. Perhaps you do it for that reason? ;) The thing about Twitter is always going to be its LBE. It's a mainstream LBE to Social Media. For that very reason its perfect for business, government, and non profit to take public temperature and promote. The other "noise" is the "MV", the "mainstream voice". The conversation is 4 way.(and yes sometimes only 1 way) but there it is and its not going to go away any time soon. - Melanie Reed
Yes, indeed, Twitter is the Microsoft of microblogging. It's good enough, but not the best - but it has the huge advantage that everyone is using it, so you have to use it for compatibility reasons. - Trent Hamm
I still use Twitter for more than just updates. I converse, I crowdsource, and I read through to see what other people are thinking and talking about. FriendFeed is the one that I have a difficult time finding use for, but I'm trying. - Dave Huston
DAMN Robert I HATE that you are right on this one!!!!! - Arleen Anderson
Hopefully you use it for positive self pimping and not for negative pimping... which is inevitable - Kevin Burrell
If FF would have taken mobile seriously, the game might look different right now - Alex C. Williams
Alex, they are taking mobile seriously - they sold to Facebook. :-) - Jesse Stay
I can't see how Twitter can survive Facebook now. FB will bring Twitter down, the only chance they got is to sell to Google. - Patrik Johansson
What makes people think Facebook or Twitter is all-conquering? There's a new generation coming through, and they aren't using these services. It's very important not to get sucked in by the hype of a service you use. Fanboys will talk up the positives and ignore the negatives, giving you a skewed message. The truth is somewhere in the massive grey area in between. - Chris Nixon
The new generation uses Facebook a lot, but not Twitter. - Steph (sh_skew) from email
Let me say that it is not twitter per se. It is the population of twitter to make it the place it is at the moment. Whenever there is a (free entrance) place crowded of people, there will be spambots to pollute it. - funkyboy from Posty
Twitter is just a temporary solution for a quick mixture of instant messaging + status updates + chat forum. - Bora Wiemann
Just having a discussion today that Twitter will eventually go bankrupt when the hype is over - Khuram Hussain
I don't agree with you Robert. Twitter is easy to use, succinct and versatile. I've made multiple very meaningful connections through my use of twitter. I do like friendfeed's threaded conversations which are great but in a way it only helps those who have big followings like yourself, because people are more apt to comment on your thread than say mine because they know the conversation... more... - Lon Cohen
For example - how do I message you directly so you know I'm speaking to you (i.e. Twitter @ reply) but all your followers and my followers know that we're having a conversation in Twitter back and forth so that they can follow and interject when they want. Everytime we do that we have to start a brand new discussion thread and I have to "tell" you somehow that I'm talking to you. Twitter is like email/phone conversations and friendfeed is like collective blogging/commenting. - Lon Cohen
Amen, Robert. - Lindsay
The power and beauty of twitter originate from limitation. Think of it as conversation haiku. - Brendan

I wish to ban "Experts Exchange" from all my Google Search results. Always.
There's a greasemonkey script to at least remove the link from the results page - Topbit

the link: http://userscripts.org/scripts... And there are others there - Topbit
Google needs FriendFeed filters :) - Susan Beebe
Don't you mean Expert Sex Change? - Jim Norris
I tend to include -experts-exchange.com if I'm googling for anything technical. I shouldn't have to do that. - Mark Trapp
Would be nice to get the ability to get rid of all paid service. - Tyler (Chacha)
There is never ever a reason to include EE in search results. What, I'm going to pay to get a technical question answered? Are you kidding me? - You.
Stack Overflow is the best alternative. - Rich
If you click on the cache link in Google, the "paid" answers are cached at the bottom of the page-- no signup required. :) - Jeremy Felt
Yeah the cache trick is nice but isn't that a violation of Google's TOS? providing different results to the crawler? - Bill Pennington from twhirl
No need for the cache...if you scroll all the way to the bottom the answers are there. - Brian Newman
Interesting... if you open the link (non-cached) in a new tab, the answers don't show, but if you follow the link through google in the same tab, the answers do show at the bottom. Weird. - Jeremy Felt
The answers are generally way, way on the bottom and only visible if you visit the thread from Google's search results. Frustrating: yes, but there is also a lot of good information in there... - John μller
I'm not alone. I'd like to bad about.com too. - Paul Grav
«Interesting... if you open the link (non-cached) in a new tab, the answers don't show, but if you follow the link through google in the same tab, the answers do show at the bottom.» This is even officially allowed by Google these days, it's called "first click free" (others might call it "sort of cloaking"). - Philipp Lenssen
I feel the same way about anything from Associated Content. - EricaJoy
CustomizeGoogle extension for Firefox (or something similar) allows user to define filters for search to make it more usable. - Daniel Schildt
Go ahead and allow the results to Experts Exchange to show, and when you get there use this script on the page. http://draconislabs.net/upload... If you need to, save a copy of the info in case you need it later. - April Russo (app103) from NoiseRiver
Jeremy, set up a Firefox Quicksearch bookmark for Google searches and just exclude the bad domain there, using the following string in the Properties/Location field: http://www.google.com/search... -inurl%3Aexperts-exchange.com - Erik Dafforn
Sorry, that truncated the URL. After .com, add /search?q=%s -inurl%3Aexperts-exchange.com - Erik Dafforn
I was able to use info from EE only recently. I would just scroll down to see the answer. Even after they'd done something to prevent that, I would still hit a link that allowed me to scroll down and read what I needed. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Totaly true. Everytime I search for JEE stuff this freaking pages pops up ... - Marius Quadflieg
am I the only who can kick off *wrong* (in my opinion) links in Google output? http://www.google.com/support... - A.T.
add "-expertsexchange.com" to your search query? just a thought. - Dossy Shiobara
@dossy sometimes you have a dream to have it as permanent filter, preferably with feedback to original website that they are classified as morons by 10.000.000.000 users :) - A.T.
@Jeremy, just as a hack I made you a Custom Search Engine called 'All But Experts-Exchange'. Compare the results of [http://www.google.com/cse...] with [http://www.google.com/search...]. You can access the CSE here: http://www.google.com/coop.... - DeWitt Clinton
A better solution would be for us to enable something per-site with SearchWiki [http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008...]. I actually thought we could already, let me look again. - DeWitt Clinton
I would like to do this as well, Experts Exchange is the biggest joke. Stack Overflow has everything any more... w/o hiding their answers. - Nicholas Kreidberg
How do you configure a Custom Search Engine to exclude specific sites? - Paul Grav
@Paul - once you've set up a CSE, follow the link that says "[Edit this search engine]" and look at the left-hand column under Control Panel for a link that says "Sites". Find the section called "Excluded sites" and then "Add Site". I think our user experience here could be better. The Custom Search Engines are incredibly powerful, but not nearly as discoverable as they could be. - DeWitt Clinton
DeWitt, thanks for the reminder about CSE. It's an incredibly cool feature. - Jason Wehmhoener
Include this in your query site:-expertsexchange.com - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
totally agree, I hate those wankers - Toby Graham
@Jason - thanks! Custom Search Engines are perhaps my favorite power feature that Google offers. Come to Google I/O and I'll show off something neat with them. - DeWitt Clinton
There should really be a search experiment to do this. Exclude the follow sites from your results. SearchWiki doesn't do it AFAIK. I've thought about suggesting the search experiment at work but never got around to it. I think I shall today. - EricaJoy
me too... hate experts exchange - mikepk
Erica: Google *does* offer a way to do this in your query. Try searching for YourKeyWord site:-siteIhate.com site:-OtherSiteIHate.com The "-" verbiage is how you tell the engine to *not* return results from those sites. Conversely, you could search "keyword site:MyFavoriteResource.com" to only return results from your intended target. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Scroll to the bottom works for me. And sometimes there's good answers. I think it's ridiculous that I have to scroll to the bottom but... for me it's not worth adding yet another extension or greasemonkey script. - Robert DeBord
Haven't seen it in the comments, but you can always use the SaerchWiki Labs feature to remove any unnecessary results from view. I think you can go as far as 'ban' a domain. - ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,

FriendFeed Isn’t Dying, Although It’s a Nice Line - http://www.inquisitr.com/14164...
It's interesting that there's so much noise about friendfeed. It is growing much faster than Twitter did in its first year and is much more important to the new web. The problem is that not very many people know they need an aggregator. At least not yet. But, the truth is that friendfeed has always needed features that I've just started to call "track" in honor of Steve Gillmor. I asked for those features back in February and still haven't gotten them. Until we get those kinds of features then the real time web will not go to the next level. - Robert Scoble
I'm confused about the real-time web (there's no Wikipedia entry!). I thought all of the ping services that emerged years ago were in the business of capturing updates from blog posters. Wasn't that what Dave's weblogs.com, among others, did? - Scott Loftesness
I'd love to give Bret or even the loyal power users who help ff, some feedback. They're too close to see some things. Some NON technical things. - Ed Shahzade /NextInstinct
yes scott as you would have seen if Feedburner worked, because it's all about ping servers. Check back in another hour or so. - Steve Gillmor
Twitter is an input to FriendFeed; that's why the comparisons don't really work. Comparing Twitter to FriendFeed is like comparing pasta to lasagna. - Daniel Miessler
I message people who follow me on Twitter to follow me on FriendFeed. Most all of them are not familiar with FriendFeed, but are willing to give it a try. This means there is room to grow. However, many people who have used FriendFeed in the past say they prefer Twitter. But it is not an either/or. Twitter and FriendFeed are not competitive. They serve different functions and people *don't* understand this. I think once they understand this they will adopt it in greater numbers. - Bill Romanos
Scott: ping servers are centralized. The real-time web that's evolving now is decentralized. Getting it all to work together is what TRACK is all about. - Robert Scoble
I use Twitter, FF and FB. Not everyone I know is on all three sites. I like Twitter for rapid-fire snapshots, but am coming to appreciate FF more and more for its texture and the ability for people to engage on a deeper level. - Sue Radd
I have Friend Feed, Plurk, Twitter, and Facebook running all at once. For some reason FF doesn't catch it all. - MarkCarras
I'm all for decentralization, but it seems to me that FriendFeed and Twitter are pretty centralized! - Scott Loftesness
I have no desire at all for FF to go mainstream. The slines can keep FaceBook and MySpace. - Internet's Tad
I use FriendFeed to post to Twitter. I learned this from Scoble. Thanks - Bill Romanos
@Robert Hehe, I wrote a post this afternoon claiming that the real time web isn't important at all. Am I in trouble now? http://vanelsas.wordpress.com/2009... - Alexander van Elsas
I have no idea what I would do without FF right now, it is my gateway to the world, much more so than any other system I have ever used. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Real-time isn't nearly as important as getting the right information at the right time. Big difference imo. - Alexander van Elsas
Friendfeed is miles better than Twitter but too complicated for the masses to go mainstream. Twitter is a training course for Friendfeed. Once Twitter is swamped in noise FF will rise 2011+. - Thomas Power
Friend feed will become more relevant and important as Twitter fills up with auto dms and spam and more - Richard Binhammer
sidenote: Don't understand why Friendfeed would be better than Twitter. They serve a different purpose. And they both get filled with crap at times - Alexander van Elsas
FriendFeed is alive and well. - ka3drr
using FF is a diversion from my normal work right now, but I have high hopes that soon enough it will become integrated with my workflow. once it gains critical mass (read: popular beyond you 1st adopter web-types, sorry to typecast) FF will be a useful communication tool for business as well as fun. - grant fox
Alexander, it's easier to add delays to a real-time system than it is to add real-time to a delayed system. My response to your blog post is here: http://friendfeed.com/e... I also want to answer the people who commented two months ago. Scott Loftesness, are you still reading this? - Bruce Lewis from fftogo

Well considering the "news" is pretty much one-sided, I would take the time to look for the good that is happening. ;) - Spencer
What news? Did I miss something? - andy brudtkuhl
I understand completely. I turn away when i see CNN or any other news channel on TV. Even twitter sometimes can get a little depressing. But realize that (1) depressing news gets ratings (2) there will always be things depressing to report and (3) generally speaking there are always his and lows. For example, I just found out I will be the father of twins. - David Bisset (sn)
The news is always depressing. Why I tend to use the net to get my news. If I hate a freaking story just flip to a new page. - Shawn aka ringking

What Do You Do When Flickr Deletes Your Paid Account Without Warning Not Once But Twice? - http://www.flickr.com/photos...
What Do You Do When Flickr Deletes Your Paid Account Without Warning Not Once But Twice?
What Do You Do When Flickr Deletes Your Paid Account Without Warning Not Once But Twice?
This guy seems sort of angry. Apparently, he says, Flickr deleted his paid account not once, but twice. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
"Here is a picture I took of the letter "F" letter. I took it just hours after FLICKR SHUT DOWN YET ANOTHER ONE OF MY PRO ACCOUNTS WITH NO WARNING! Thank you flickr. Thank you for being such an awesome photosharing site. You are a gift to the worlds artists! And thank you for choosing what people should see! I'm glad people can't chose their art freely. Wouldn't that make the world... more... - Thomas Hawk
Cannot imagine why anyone would pay for a second Flickr account after having the first one deleted. I'd be completely done after the first time. - Karoli
You've got to admit though, at least his response is creative. - Thomas Hawk
Probably I'd switch to a different service - Brett Kelly
Looks like some moderators are getting a little paranoid and trigger-happy with the delete button. - Rene Wirtz
Love the response. I'd definitely go elsewhere, there are plenty of sites around and you can generate your own traffic. - Kenton
Hmm, there's always Zooomr, and the folks at 23 (http://www.23hq.com/), if anyone wants an alternative, although I don't know how long they'll stick around for. - Tyson Key
Rene, that's an understatement. It seems to be getting worse and worse. It sucks. Yes, there are alternative sites, but none with either the mass of community or richness in archive. I quit Flickr once over a censorship issue, but you come back in the end. It's too hard not to. It's like crack for photographers. Sad though that the censorship runs so rampant. And it sucks that people routinely are deleted so frequently without warning. - Thomas Hawk
If a particular deletion gets enough attention, Flickr usually just ends up calling it a "mistake," Still even "mistaken" deletions can't be restored over there. - Thomas Hawk
At least this guy seems to have at least somewhat a sense of humor about it. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas - love your statement Flickr is "like crack for photographers." - AWESOME! - Susan Beebe
Flickr is 1 step away from KGB mentality - ultra lame for a social photo site - Susan Beebe
I keep each photo that I post online (both to Flickr and Storm-Artists.net) on my local machine, so if my account gets deleted I'll be upset but at least I will still have my photos. But, it's pretty bad that the instant reaction to a possible violation is deleting an account, that is just premature, immature, irresponsible and very poor business practice. - Rene Wirtz
Exactly! They should disable NOT delete accounts - Susan Beebe
the problem isn't so much losing your photos. Hopefully nobody is stupid enough to put their only copy of their photos on *any* photosharing site. Although sadly some have been and have lost photos. The problem more though is that when you're deleted you lose so much of a social archive that went along with your photos. - Thomas Hawk
When Flickr nukes your account *everything* is gone. The social metadata around photos are significant. Whole conversations have happened in photo threads. Many, many are like blog posts. Truly creative collaboration can happen in interacting with photos. It's not just Flickr killing your stream. They kill everyone's interaction that ever touched your stream as well. - Thomas Hawk
When Flickr nukes you all of that is permanently erased. And even though there are tools to remove your photos off of their servers, there are no tools to salvage the metadata around photos. Even if they deleted the photos they should leave that in place. - Thomas Hawk
Think about some of the amazing threads we've seen on FF even in it's short life. And imagine if someone just came in and deleted all of someone's threads without warning. They're not just killing and punishing the person. They're punishing anyone who interacted in those threads. Many of these threads may seem stupid and even silly, but I believe that many threads also have important historical and archival value that we may not even realize today. - Thomas Hawk
I just realized that you could always use the Wayback Machine to get your photos. - Admiral Anika
Hmm, as far as I know, they don't embed the geotagging data into the metadata of the image files, so you've effectively lost it. - Tyson Key
A long explanation, but a bit on why I feel objecting to the censorship on Flickr is so important. - Thomas Hawk
Tyson that is why you should not use Flickr or any photo sharing site to geotag your photos. Do it yourself at the file level. I use Geotagger (free) and Google earth (free) on my Mac. Microsoft has a free geotagging program at their Pro Photo Tools page. Both of these are easier and faster than doing it on Flickr and *you* retain this data at the file level. - Thomas Hawk
All of the metadata is available via the API, isn't it? Regardless, losing all of the comments is an enormous loss of data in some cases, it seems baffling that a company owned by a search giant would be so willing to destroy data willy-nilly. - Tyler
Anika, I'm not sure that you can use the wayback machine. On many Flickr pages I've tried it in the past and it hasn't worked. I tried it on one of my photos that Flickr deleted a while back and for whatever reason it wouldn't work. Here's an example of one of my current photo pages not indexed by archive.org. http://web.archive.org/web... - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, You've had problems with Flickr before? I can't believe they would delete one of your photographs. They should consider it an honor that you even use their service! - Michael Fidler
Interesting Flickr fact and then I'll get off my soapbox. In the "Adult Flickr Members How Not To get Deleted" group (a group set up for the main reason of figuring out how *not* to get your account deleted off of Flickr), there are 17,664 members. That's a lot of people worried about getting deleted. - Thomas Hawk
In the forums and in Flickr Ideas all you see is referral back to the Community Guidelines and these are pretty vague, so basically this means that Flickr staff can do what they want. - Rene Wirtz
And you are right, it would be a waste and a shame to lose all the comments (human interactions) when account gets deleted. - Rene Wirtz
"You come back in the end. It's hard not to." Very true. With its massive user base of talented pro and amateur photographers, Flickr has a lot of weight to throw around when these issues come up. I wonder what level of vocal user frustration around Flickr's account deletion policies is enough to force them to implement an "undelete" administrative tool and step back to take an objective look at their process. Obviously the current level is not near enough. - Tom Harrison
Obviously undeleting a deleted account isn't as simple as creating the tool - it implies an investment of time and manpower to handle appeals. I suppose that means there needs to be at least two motivating factors: a viable competitor and enough paying members switching over to that competitor out of frustration in order to justify the investment in such an appeals process. - Tom Harrison
Usually hitting them where it hurts, the wallet, may help, but especially now you have to wonder if Flickr is really a moneymaker for Yahoo? And is it even core business for Yahoo going forward. They may not be motivated at all to really do something about it ... - Rene Wirtz
I really think that we flickr users with pro accounts should start a petition, after writing up some reasonable demands to yahoo about fair play. Because really, this is a yahoo company. - Paula W
I have no problem with a petition, but it still boggles my mind that Flickr/Yahoo is so incredibly arrogant about this policy. This is not brain surgery. Users have paid, and while Flickr retains the right to have the final say, there's no excuse for not allowing a paying customer to pick up their toys before Flickr tosses 'em in the trash, irretrievably. - Karoli
Eventually we'll move back to our hard drives. - Jordi Soler
Still don't understand why there is not for suspected offending users a blocking of all their photos being visible to everyone, freeze on messaging/commenting etc and an email dialogue with the user about the issue so that they have a chance to rememdy and resolve. Also why not a 3 strike rule where if they need to take this action 3 times its then a ban. - Rob Brammeld
What I find surprising is the fact that this profile with all the letters is still up... - Holger Eilhard
Flickr needs an ombudsman. - coldbrew
Scott, a suit wouldn't work. When you sign up for Flickr you basically say they can delete your account for anything that they want really. It's part of the TOS. You agree to it when you join. I guess in part it's just a hope that if eventually the issue got enough attention that they might budge. Maybe someday if/when Flickr has different ownership things might change. Yahoo obviously just doesn't care. I would think they'd care more about their reputation as censors but they do not seem to. Sadly. - Thomas Hawk
i left flickr some time ago - Oliver Hörold
I have come across to something similar with the biggest online art website, DeviantArt, where some admins couldn't resist going on powertrips and banning people left & right, just because they could. And from there I learnt there really is only one way to make them change: get a large group of people to not renew their subscription to hurt them in their pocketbook. If they don't hurt financially, it is nearly impossible to make changes. - Rene Wirtz

FriendDeck: Now an Adobe AIR app for tracking FriendFeed...can you tell how much I love this?
Can it do Twitter? Seriously, twitter + friendfeed are the two that need monitoring. Until we all have access to the new Twhirl, consider it the holy grail no matter how unrefined the interface... - Glenn Batuyong
Ok, I'm trying it now - M F
omg that's so fucking sweet seriously - Snipergirl
If they could get this and TweetDeck into a single app, I'd be on it. Until then, I'm sticking with Twhirl. Good start, though - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
@Bob: I track most of my Twitter friends on FriendFeed, thanks to FriendFeed's new Twitter/FF friend list sync tool: https://friendfeed.com/setting... - Sarah Perez
For once... just once... would somebody building a client for FriendFeed support "Hide"? Please? - Ken Sheppardson
I don't want to track only certain topics, but it's a good start :) - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
@zo: you don't have to! You can track your lists, your rooms, your friends, comments, anything...I track topics, but that's just me - Sarah Perez
ZOMG - Iain Baker
I had to hop back to Sarah's original article for the search syntax. I think most people want "friends:<your_username>" at a minimum. - Ken Sheppardson from Friend Deck
Installing as we speak. Probably will still use FF directly, but I gotta try this out. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Hot stuff. I've been waiting on this one. Glad he got it going :) - Bwana ☠
Love the list and room support... not obvious how to use it, but that can easily be fixed. Web <-> client sync is killer..KILLER I say. I think the layout needs tweaking, when you expand threads, it's a little busy. I'm gonna blog a review later - Bwana ☠ from Friend Deck
I like this one. I find Twhirl a pain to use for FF so time to try this. - Rob Cairns
Don't forgot to join the room Paul set-up: http://friendfeed.com/rooms... - Kol Tregaskes
@Sarah, I'd like to log in and see what I get on the home page, you know, my 'everything' :) - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
I'm having problems with any of my lists showing up, especially those with spaces in the name. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
@Chris: check the *actual* name of the list. For example, my list "Social Media Favs" (with spaces) is actually "social-media-favs" when I look at its URL. So I type in list:social-media-favs to make it show up in FriendDeck. Yes, should be easier, but it definitely works. - Sarah Perez
Looks like my tweetdeck will have to share my second screen with frienddeck. - Sonya Smith
Now I wish I bought the 17" MBP instead. - Rutger Blom
Ah ha... RWW points to http://frienddeck.com but it should be http://www.frienddeck.com/ - Michael Lehman
@Michael Thanks, I fixed that. (Note to Paul - make both URLs work!) - Sarah Perez
Hi eveery one, thanks for the comments. I have loads still to do on both the web app and AIR app. - Paul Kinlan from Friend Deck
Thanks Sarah, but how do I get my home feed as well? - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
:D got my home feed by typing who:[username] - Baard @ Pixum
I am adding Home feeds in soon.... It was an oversight of mine in the first version. - Paul Kinlan from Friend Deck
I am adding Home feeds in soon.... It was an oversight of mine in the first version. - Paul Kinlan from Friend Deck

If you are trying to get lists you have to use the nickname and not the pretty name. I am working on that. - Paul Kinlan from Friend Deck
Would lovelovelove tweetdeck and frienddeck all in one. I might actually use it then - Doug Haslam from twhirl
whoa! Trying it (FriendDeck) - Drew Lucas
who:username is like the home feed but not exactly the same. - Paul Kinlan from Friend Deck
Yes, TweetDeck & FriendDeck together! As it is, I have my FF friends set up in categories and have key tweetstreams feeding through them, sort of a work-around, but not as slick as this could be. - Cathryn Hrudicka
Uh, what is it supposed to do? It's just a search box. Do I need to have interests before I can use it? - Matthew DeVries
@Matthew: No. There are a lot of ways to use it. You can follow friends, comments, lists, rooms, and more. Read about it :) (Of course, it is good to have interests, you know, in general. In life). - Sarah Perez
...definitely an app that could use a good 30" monitor... - JA Castillo
has anyone had trouble with frienddeck on linux ? it keeps freezing the screen strange - eric
It's cool - but I'm suffering for just having a poorly organized set of feeds, i.e. a chubby 'Home' one.who:username isn't the same. - David Ing
@David: Hang tight, Home feed will be added in the next release...coming very soon. - Sarah Perez
I haven't tried it on Linux yet, will need to get a VM running so that I can test. - Paul Kinlan from Friend Deck
My "Dalek" search column has a peculiar order, not really chronological, not alphabetical, not Fibonacci..... - Matthew DeVries
Not sure if I'll use it? - Sean
Matthew: It's the same as it would be on FriendFeed itself, as far as I can tell. Check to see if there's new comments. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Matthew, Chris is correct it is in FriendFeed order, which I think is last "action" time i.e the last time something happened on the article such as a like etc. - Paul Kinlan from Friend Deck
wow, definitely gotta try this out again... if its just half as cool as tweetdeck is for twitter, then... - Peter Efland
frienddeck, great *going online to price 2nd monitor...* - Anthony Farrior
That was quick. I only tried the web version the other week.Well done. - Emsquared
for friendfeed power! - Sharad Lunia
v0.2 will be out soon, I finally have a cert so it is a signed app (by comodo) Just testing some features now. Still have lots more to do though. - Paul Kinlan from Friend Deck

10 Reasons Why You Should Sign Up for FriendFeed
I wish there was a AIR client for FF though. - barl0w
Twhirl works well for FF and it's an AIR client. - Bob M. Montgomery from twhirl
Great article. I want to learn more about the dumping the RSS feeder part. You should share some tips with that. Good stuff. - Amani
Love seeing FF through the eyes of someone who's not a traditional techie =) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Thanks Bob! - barl0w
A big part of why I wrote this post and have it running in my number one photo spot on Flickr right now is because I want more of my photography friends to sign up for the service. I *love* seeing photos here on FriendFeed and there are so many talented photographers who are not here yet who need to be. If we can get more of them to sign up, you guys will love their work. Of course there are many great photographers already on here but still a lot more who could join. - Thomas Hawk
I had to re-share this with all my FB friends. :) - Kelly W.
Still trying to figure out this whole friendfeed experience. I've had the account for a while and see lots of my twitter friends posting via ff - Demetri Mouratis
great piece! - mashable
Hi Demetri =) Different people use FF different ways because they want to get different things out of it. What are you hoping to get out of it? - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Thanks for the tip. I had FF but really never 'got' what it was for. This helped! - Molly Nichelson from twhirl
Great work. - Nation Hahn
Nice post Thomas. - Paul Wade
TH - for those photographers that are not on here, I put their flickr id into my Flickr Imaginary friend and see their images that way. However, it would be nice to get more photographers on here with their reader shares and such... - Justin Korn
This is definitely the best "Why Friendfeed" post I've seen. - Nick in Manila
Justin, agreed. I have a bunch of imaginary friend accounts for Flickr/Zooomr users as well. But it is nicer when they actually have accounts here, their work can be liked and commented to the larger FF community, etc. It seems like a few new people signed up today based on this post so I'm happy for that. Thanks Nick! - Thomas Hawk
I have AlertThingy FriendFeed Edition as well as AlertThingy v2 - Outsanity
Well said, Thomas. :) - Josh Haley
Nice list of reasons, all well thought out. While I'm at it, I wanted to tell you that I really like your new blog design too. - Karoli
Good point on getting a domain you like. - Kevin Whalen
Do most folks use FF in Standard or Real-time view mode? - Scott Loftesness
Only ever real-time.. it sits nicely on the second monitor as a Chrome App. - Greg Gannicott
Realtime here... - Chris Gulker
Did you just reformatted your post, Thomas? It a lot easier to scan through now. - Alan Le
Alan, a lot of times I post first and edit later. I probably shouldn't do that, but yeah, after posting I broke up some of the paragraphs better, bolded a few things etc., to make it easier to read. - Thomas Hawk
That's great. Make sure to check out Windows Live Writer for formatting blog posts if you haven't already yet. By the way, I love the new blog design. It's much better than when I helped you with the html way back. http://thomashawk.com/2006... - Alan Le
Barlow, Im currently developping an Adobe AIR tool for FriendFeed: we comin' ! - David Guyon
Y'know... I must've spent two months randomly Tweeting things like "Will someone PLEASE explain to me why I should be using FriendFeed?" ... And then two days ago I start using my account (I'd had one for a while)... and NOW someone finally makes a post outlining why I should be here. You're two days late, Mr. Hawk, two days late. :P - Lou
actually, there's no search for Russian word forms on Frf. For me that looks as if there's no search at all - orie
hmmm.. I didn't know that orie. It seems like there is a lot of international users on FF, that's surprising to me. - Thomas Hawk
I've been trying to make sense of FF for months now, but every time I come away confused. As it is I feel like I'm drowning under all the social networking sites available. I use Twitter, Plurk and Facebook the most, and I use Ping.fm so I only have to post status updates once. How can I integrate FF into this without making things even more confusing? - Chris Taylor
oooh! I found the zooomr version of this post with no formatting and I whined somewhere else in my FF feed. This one with all the formatting is better :D - Tamar Weinberg
Friendfeed rocks! - rampantheart
I really liked how you did a post on Flicker - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
All good reasons but #10 is my #1 reason :) - Mark Krynsky
Mark - agreed. Also, Thomas ... very nice blog. I like. - Amani
Good post Thomas. I was thinking it would be hard to find 10 points, but I agree with all your points, and am sure there are probably many more. - Peter Efland
@Tamar, the unformated text was a problem on the Zooomr image. Kristopher's fixed that bug now so text in descriptions on Zooomr photos should format correctly now. - Thomas Hawk
I wasn't using FF, but signed up after your post. Now let's see if it is really so useful ;-) - Marcel Körner
@Marcel also take into consideration who you are subscribed to. Aside from maybe four on your current sub list, they are not very active at all on FF. This will affect your experience here. - Carlos Ayala
Didn't know there was a "Porn" room on FF (see screenshot)... - David Young
how did you see that they are not active on FF? - Marcel Körner
David, the "porn" room on FriendFeed isn't all that active actually. I'm not really interested in porn per se, just thought it was a good group name to claim in the great FriendFeed land group name grab of 2008. - Thomas Hawk
@Marcel by their numbers, and the fact that i know most of them and can tell you first hand that they are not. (if you hover over people's names you will see their numbers) - Carlos Ayala

Steve Rubel
I love Robert Scoble. Here's why:
Robert Scoble is starting to use Friendfeed like a blogging platform with his chronic "here's why" postings. I think that's pretty cool. If FF expands the text field and supports domains, it could get interesting here. - Steve Rubel
Supporting domains would be HUGE - andy brudtkuhl
The practice is very good if you have enough followers who can engage with you and their comments are interlinked with your own, unlike the typical blog that has the body and comments below. But if you don't have a following, you're talking to yourself. - Louis Gray
Robert is the only one who can do this effectively right now. In order for FF to become an effective blogging platform, it needs more features which I fear would hinder it - Bwana ☠
Robert's coverage of CES using FriendFeed was good too. As he walked around he took pictures and posted them right away to FriendFeed along with simple captions. Details could be added later. - Loren Heiny
@Louis - Agreed... Sometimes it does feel like you are talking to yourself on FF - especially if you are posting topics. But it's easy to get into the conversation, and that part I love - andy brudtkuhl
I would seriously consider doing this for the real-time interaction but for one thing: don't the FF "blog" posts become ephemera? It seems like in a day or two they disappear. A blog lives forever and is Googleable. - Leo Laporte
Scobez is fearless and willing to try anything new and seems to be constantly trying to improve himself and his relationship with his audience. Even with his Jupiter-sized ego, he seems to be a genuinely nice, honest guy. That's why I'm one of his legion of fans. - Internet's Tad
You could subscribe to your FF via RSS and archive it with a 3rd party app/etc. is something that comes to mind if FF themselves don't provide a way to directly store everything forever. - Ari Braginsky
Let's not forget that folks can interrupt you as you blog... that will get annoying for the blogger and the reader - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Leo: FriendFeed gets indexed: my FriendFeed page has a PR of 5. And posts exist forever, you can bookmark and link to direct posts from the start of FriendFeed. The big issue is the pager, which only goes back 21 pages right now. - Mark Trapp
Leo, every FF post has a permalink even if you can't get to it via the pagination at the bottom of your feed. Older items show up no problem via search (FF or search engine) or again via that permalink. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Leo, ephemera is part and parcel of the internet in general. :) - Internet's Tad
@Leo I would think better support for multimedia too. - Steve Rubel
I think that FF should be both a blogging platform (with support for long, paragraphed posts and inline media) and an RSS reader with ability to have full feed popups (a la iGoogle's Google Reader widget). Those that don't want those features don't have to use them -- I want them. - Brian Sullivan
Rob, please no cussin' in my stream. Please edit. Also, why do obscenities fly here more than they do on Twitter or blogs? - Steve Rubel
dont know... ask ya mate scoble why he said it in a 14 year olds stream? I dont cuss mate... just stating what he said. sorry... - Rob Sellen :o)
Deleted your comment. Sorry. This feed is family friendly. Happy to have your point but without the word. - Steve Rubel
Rob, without a profile at FF it's really hard to know anyone's age so I don't think your connection of calling a 14 yr old a name is valid if he didn't know that person's age. I knew the person you're referring to is young but not everyone else does. I just found out a few days ago there's another 8th grader subscribed to my feed, even though based on conversation I would have assumed he was about 5-10 years older. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Steve: I blocked Rob so can't see his comments. I also blocked the 14 year old for being a jerk too. - Robert Scoble
Yeah....but it was already stated in the tread he was 14....just shocvking.. i got a 14 yr old..well nex week he is... and i would be funing if scoble or anyone said that to hm.... its not good...and yet people stick up for scoble here... censoring me as steve did, no problem, it shows true colours of peoples perspective... we all learn from it, but just saying we should be seeting an example to younger ones. - Rob Sellen :o)
Rob, I am not censoring you. Your last comment remains. I just remove curses since these all end up in my lifestream feed which has a few thousand subs. - Steve Rubel
No worries steve... :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
Rob -- you are really being a troll - Brian Sullivan
I like the echo effect Robert has. If he throws a stone into the pond, you can watch it ripple for several hours on FriendFeed and Twitter. Some of us (and I include myself here), throw stones and they sink to the bottom:-). I think he's living proof that it's not about the number of people who follow you, but how active and engaged that audience is that does. - Brandon Mendelson
you think so Brian? well thats according to whatever definition you give it.... i am whats the word..talking in my definition, I know a troll when i see one, I know what they are like and I dont act that way... maybe I shouldn't have unintenionally hijacked the thread... sorry if I did...never meant that...just sick of the hypocrisy. - Rob Sellen :o)
+ 100 on Tad's first comment on why he's a fan ... - Patrick Jordan
me too me too :) and Steve Rubel Ace. :) - YusufOzanTasdemir
I can live with the occasional profanity but try writing in English, Rob. You sound like Vicky Pollard from 'Little Britain'. - Andy C
Nice anology brandon... shame that in a sense its partly because of what you said about "sink to the bottom comments" is what ultimately will lead a possible divide here on ffeed.... its already starting in my mind..and in my experience it was scoble who started that divide by blocking what i see because it didn't suit him. - Rob Sellen :o)
andy..... how the hell do you make a join like that? - Rob Sellen :o)
Andy, Rob is deaf and it's possible that his method of 'speaking' i.e. his writing might be shaped by that. Seriously FriendFeed, THIS is why we NEED profiles, to keep us from accidentally stepping on each others toes like this! - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Nice point Tina. :o) true, my speech was shaped by reading, why i say it is so important to read, write, its communication...the world currency...proud to not ever had to use signing. :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I signed out so I could see what Rob was saying. I had no idea that the 14-year-old was 14 when I was talking with him. I assume everyone here is an adult and treat them as such until they prove otherwise. I blocked Rob because he is a jerk and a troll and I blocked the 14-year-old for the same reason. Sorry, but I won't get along with everyone here. - Robert Scoble
LOL friendfeed is Scoble's unofficial Blog - sofarsoShawn
shawn...if so...that is worrying! - Rob Sellen :o)
People tend to love the Scobles XD - ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
We all have the ability to act like 8th graders, we just don't need to. - Greg Guitarbuster
Andy....foot in mouth springs to mind..... doh! steve you DID censor me then...removing that post...maybe not censoring me overall, but... I get the picture anyway. .. zu... "people".??.. speak for yourself.. ;o) - Rob Sellen :o)
Back to Scoble's "here"/"here's" posts. It was noted by Mark Trapp last night that his formulation not only works on FriendFeed, but also works when he propagates his FriendFeed posts to Twitter. I have pictures: http://friendfeed.com/e... - Ontario Emperor
I agree that FF is a great blogging platform, but it can also be used to combine with an actual better blogging platform. I use WordPress to blog and then the conversations around the post here are automatically pulled into the post on WP. I think that's the best of both worlds actually. The reader does have to click at least once to the blog but you can also post part of the post here to engage people who don't want to click through. - Thomas Hawk
oh, and I love Robert's enthusiasm in all that he does as well. - Thomas Hawk
I've been asking for blogging features in FF since I started using it. Glad to see Steve supports this point of view: maybe now someone will listen and less people will complain and argue that FF IS NOT a blogging platform (of course it isn't, but it could be MORE THAN JUST THAT!) - Jordi Soler
Scoble is da man. I also enjoy Micro Persuasion greatly. :) :) :) - J. D. Ebberly
sometimes I wish Scoble was my dad - sofarsoShawn
Shawn, he's Luke's father! - Steve Rubel from IM
So just starting a converation by posting a topic is now considered "blogging"? Posting a list of bullet points intertwined with other peoples comments might be interesting to some folks, but I wouldn't call it "blogging", and I really can't get into it myself. There's enough noise in the system now that injecting it in between sentences of a "blog post" really isn't necessary, IMHO. - Ken Sheppardson
I can just look at his "likes" and get all caught up on the day. RS is the editor needed for the real-time web. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it. - Sarah Perez

CTO?? what is that? and no he shouldnt...he is a nobody... outside this circle online noone knows who he is... - Rob Sellen :o)
Robert Scoble's smart and fun. - Igor Poltavskiy
I think Scoble would laugh if you suggested that. There is a huge difference between being a blogger/journalist and reporting and analysing, and being a CTO supposed to give technology leadership and guidance, make the decisions and see them through. PS: the best CTOs actually are nobody too, people don't know them. This is something that needs correction as technology is so key to so many businesses. And inventing a more business-ey CIO position is not necessarily the right solution. soapbox off. - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Robert is a fun mixture of tech geek, open-minded blogger, and a very human and passionate advocate of his interests! - Hayk H.
Cheers for Robert lovers - Rachael Depp
do I have to hang out with terrorist sympathizers like McBride to get love? down with Scoble the fail whale. down with his sphere and spit on his feed. Steve Rubel don't you know that Scoble is bad PR for you? don't you know the only people who appreciate him are people who want to see bad things happen to the guy. He is lower then low. a total scum bag that looks to hang out with turds. - Noah David Simon
I have gone from thinking Roberts feed too noisy to actually searching for his "here's why" posts - great conversations - Peter Efland
amazing that with all the followers he has you can only get under 100 people to comment and say they like the fat jerk - Noah David Simon
Man crush!!!! - Jeremiah Owyang
OK, everyone, back to work. Thanks for the compliments! - Robert Scoble
It's been said above - but very few people on FF can really do this. I think more quality gets missed on this platform than others. There are good posts shared that get 2 comments (if any) and Scoble can write a 4 word post that even he would admit was "noise" and have it get 100. But - it will grow and it's def. a trend worth watching.... - George Smith
George: I think that's bull. I see a LOT of posts here (10s of thousands if I'm active) and you're not missing many high quality ones, believe me. Why? Anything that's decent quality I like and comment on so you see it. - Robert Scoble
Robert - I see lots of posts that are "high quality" that you neither liked nor commented on so I can't help but thinking that there are hundreds or thousands of posts that are "high quality" that you miss either because you just don't see them or your quality standards are different. BTW your statement that you can actually view and digest 10's or thousands of posts is suspect at best. - Brian Sullivan
Brian: it's very easily provable that if I'm online I am able to digest 10s of thousands of posts. By the way, anything you like or comment on I see on my window. I have a very specific bias. I like geeky posts that make me smarter about technology, science, or business. There's lots of funny stuff here that I don't get involved in for the most part. I do see a lot of it, though. - Robert Scoble
By the way you are welcome to check out my inbound and tell me all the cool posts I miss here: http://friendfeed.com/scoblei... - Robert Scoble
"Easily provable" -- not sure how -- so we are talking about 10s of thousands over what period? And what percentage of the total FF posts is that? I am assuming you are referring to English posts only? - Brian Sullivan
It's a small percentage of the ff posts, but here's the rub: good stuff gets likes and keeps coming up. Even stuff I don't touch. There are tens of thousands of people reading here. I always check "best of" lists. So, if something isn't getting attention and you care you gotta figure out why. I read 10s of thousands of posts per day. Provable. - Robert Scoble
So you are saying that you can read and digest 11 posts a minute (that is one every 6 seconds) (assuming a 16 hour day and 10000 posts in that period). I think you are trying to play to your super hero image. I assume you eat, go to the bathroom, and do other things during the day? - Brian Sullivan
I love reading this sentence in your post: "These days, I would rather post to Friendfeed and let Twitter scoop it all up." I was really active in twitter prior to joining Friendfeed, but now I just post to FF and let twitter scoop it up. - Alan Le
My key conveyor/transmission belt: Google Reader > Friendfeed > Twitter. - Sean McBride
MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
For everyone who is taking this whole 'Scoble thing' seriously, I have one, very simple question.
picardwtfpq0.jpg
I FUCKING LOVE THIS! - Lindsey is Fierce!
AWESOME - Mark Wilson
I don't know, but the US navy has a carrier group assigned to protect his head. http://friendfeed.com/e... - Alex Scoble
Hahahahhahahhahah!!! - Robert Scoble
Need to get a life? (everyone, I mean) Boring issue, from both sides. - Ricardo Galli
I have a GIGANTIC man crush on Patrick Stewart. Verily, he can forsooth me at his leisure. - matthew john ernisse
Aaaand my work here is done! G'nite everybody! Enjoy the rest of the show! Remember to tip the veal and try the waitress! I'll be here all week! - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
That is so cool! - Robert Miller
Seriously, what is the "Scoble Thing?" - Trae Ruge
That's one of my favorite episodes!.... wait was I supposed to share that? - David Wynn
Did we ever find any Star Trek porn with Picard or Number 1 with the beard? - Lindsey is Fierce!
ahahahahaha. - Jon, the Chilled Beartato
Jason there's about 50 different posts around here and Twitter about blocking Scoble, not blocking Scoble, etc... I thought this picture put it all in perspective. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
+1 to Lindsey for calling rule 34 on season 5 #1 :) - matthew john ernisse
Hilarious. Look what you did Robert! - Umit Namli
Great one :D - Nia
This never gets old. - Steven Perez
haha nice - Mattb4rd
Never, never gets old - Lindsey is Fierce!
Seems this becomes relevant every few days... - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Love the image. It may seem tiresome, but I think many people are soul searching for what all this social media / new media *means*. I think most realize that for it to be sustainable, markets must form that provide real value exchange. Otherwise we're all just f@#ing around, and if that's the case, this show _will_ come to an end in the not too distant future. I don't think anyone wants that. - mikepk
mikepk Gets it! I called 'social media' a "morass of bacon-wrapped LOLcats" a while ago. Without a reason (aka revenue) what is the point of all of it? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Revenue isn't the only reason for things in life, Mark. It's but one. Finding friends and learning new things are also reasons behind actions in real life, why not online life? - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think it was a huge learning experience for all involved. First thing I've seen something happening in real-time. On top of that, I was also participating. - Meryn Stol
So, if I spend eight hours a day in Tina's kitchen, use her utillities and eat stuff in her fridge, it would be okay as long as I am meeting a steady stream of new people trapsing through her front door? At some point she will want some beer money. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Mark, that would make you one of my cats =) My cats pay me nothing, and I shell out a bit to keep them up. Why? Because they bring me warmth when I'm cold, a listening ear when I rant, laughs when I need them, and undivided attention when I have something that interests them like a toy or treat. They are my original FriendFeed =) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Josh my comment about revenue is not limited to FriendFeed, but all 'social media.' I assume that the rest of them are supposed to generate revenue as well, thus agreeing with your point of diversification. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
@Tina 1, 2, even 5 critters is one thing. FriendFeed has hundreds of thousands of house pets. Too many cats and you become the neighborhood 'Crazy Cat Lady.' - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
This is a lot like that photo of the two kids next to a pond, one with a string of fish and the other with a scowl on hos face. It just keeps on giving. - Mattb4rd
That's just an indicator that the analogy isn't accurate. FF isn't my house, FF is a neighborhood park, a library, a pool hall. Lots of people file through and take advantage of the service. There is a revenue stream that maintains it, though that revenue may or may not come directly from the people using the service. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think the cat statement highlights the value exchange idea. Your pets do provide value to you, so you invest your own resources (money and time) into supporting them for the value they provide. You can only do that if you accept that it's worth it for you to work at a job to make $$ to exchange that for pet time. - mikepk
Value exchange isn't always direct monetary revenue, *but* these "public" spaces must be paid for in time and money somewhere. If it's not, these public spaces will get shut down and sold to the next strip mall. :) - mikepk
Point taken, Tina. The park and the library obtain revenue from all citizens via taxes, regardless of usage. Throw them out. I like the pool hall analogy! The hall itself makes revenue from the patrons in various ways. To continue the analogy, my only reason to shoot pool in a pool hall (or anywhere) is to win bets placed on the games. That is a personal revenue stream inside the structure. That is the same as social media: working within the structure to produce a personal revenue stream. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Ah, then your usage of a pool hall is different then say my husband's. He's on a pool team in a league and pays yearly dues to be a member of the organization. He also pays a weekly greens fee to the org to play in a match. The pool hall where they play doesn't get any of this money, but they sponsor the teams and host the matches (including free table time) in *hopes* that the team members will buy food and drinks. And FWIW the library and park analogies still work within the light of a freemium model ;-) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Also, this is why I think there's the obsession. People say "advertising" or "freemium" but no one has figured out exactly how to make that work reliably. In addition, unless you understand the market incentives for both the service providers and the participants, you set yourself up for danger. - mikepk
So, the APA is Twitter? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
mikepk: Exactly. The obssesion is everyone continuing to try different methods to produce revenue because no one has a reliable model. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Robert Scoble
Why didn't Steve Jobs hold his news until they report financials next week? My ideas here:
1. Apple did better than expected in current quarter, so they wanted to get the bad news out of the way now. That way the stock will take the hit for Jobs being gone, then go up when they announce great financial results. Making it clear to everyone that the company will go on strongly without Jobs. - Robert Scoble
He's sick and is going to take time off for treatment, and it can't wait? - Ken Sheppardson
2. Someone threatened to leak the news this week anyway. - Robert Scoble
But I don't know, why didn't they just hold the bad news until the financials came out? If the financials are bad, do you think they would have just blasted both bits of bad news out together? - Robert Scoble
Ken: he could have disappeared for a week without anyone noticing. So that's not it. - Robert Scoble
Maybe he's just not well. I know from family experience that this can (and should) override anything. Anyone suddenly feels as human and mortal as the next guy when given a really shitty piece of news. - Steven Livingstone-Pérez
They could've released the news next Tuesday and buried the lead with the inauguration and all. - Mark Trapp
Wouldn't it be considered a material fact they'd have to disclose in their earnings report, if was already planned? Perhaps earning are worse than expected, and they don't want a double whammy. I think one can make up all sorts of scenarios. - Ken Sheppardson
This gets back to my question : http://friendfeed.com/e... - Will Higgins™
i suspect #2 is closest to the truth. doctors, nurses, folks at work. could be he had an episode in public somewhere... - MikeAmundsen
What financials are you talking about? The Proxy just came out a few days ago - Matt Bennett
Robert: Why don't you just go back to the yogurt shop and ask? - Ken Sheppardson
Probably a requirement under securities laws: timely disclosure of something material that might affect the share price. The CEO's temporary incapacity sure is something material. - Neville Hobson
People have been saying he was sick like this for a while. Not sure if we would have believed a "leak" regardless. Right now i'm more in shock of Steve's letter last week. Either it was a lie or he got some bad news really suddenly. Regardless, have to face the future. - David Bisset (sn)
I do think that Apple just released that because people over there knows that Steve needs some rest, the guy is sick and he needs to take care of himself, and then maybe after he is okay he would look after the company's business once again and I think your first idea might be the right one. - Ahmed
I hope he's better and ready to by next years CES! - Brett Nordquist
I think he's trying to be more open with his employees and customers. I think this is very representative of the nature of our 2.0 world. Knowledge of everything can be found so it's best not to lie and hide behind a mask of supposed truths. Best to just be honest! - Dane Deasy
Brett: me too! Wishing him all the best. - Robert Scoble
Dane: I don't think this is Steve being more open. Just read his message. Just as cryptic, only said what it needed to. Steve Jobs *IS* the Citizen Kane of Silicon Valley. - David Bisset (sn)
btw - IMO, this is not going to get better (sorry to say). i suspect Jobs' condition is chronic and probably progressive. he's proly been putting off this kind of talk for quite some time. it could be a rough year for him and those close to him. and a bad sitch for the company, too. i really hope i'm wrong. - MikeAmundsen
Option 2 seems to be the more plausible. Apple and Jobs have both been lying about this and attempting cover-ups for some time now. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Interesting that he'll be back in June--in time for announcing the next iPhone on stage? - Ian Mikutel
There are no good ways to bring bad news. But openness is less bad than denial. Hold good thoughts for Steve's recovery. - Michael Markman
Ian: that would make sense. Mess with the Palm Pre and Nokia N97 launches in June. Keep everyone slobbering over the next iPhone. - Robert Scoble
Robert, I think the 'June' return is just an arbitrary date which at this stage, could be either pessimistic or optimistic. - Scot Mcphee
As accurate and truthful as Apple/Jobs have been about this topic... I doubt Jobs will be back at all. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I think that he wants media to finally treat Apple as a "grown up" company and he plan to do this with shock therapy :) - Hubert Taler
I think he is gone for good. Goldman indicated that he spoke to senior technology person who spoke to Steve who felt Steve was "deluded about his condition". That sounds bad for steve. - themick171 from twhirl
What the hell does a senior technology person know about medical issues, though? - Victor Ganata
@ michael dee - is that the same Goldman (from CNBC) who insisted just recently that Gizmodo were talking bollocks when they said Jobs' health was in serious decline, and that Jobs' health was 'totally fine' ??? - Patrick Jordan
It's that delusion about our conditions that keep us sane. - Todd Hoff
Victor: as much as a yogurt store clerk. - Robert Scoble
Wow, I too am surprised this news was leaked prior to the financials...odd. There's something fishy about that for sure - Susan Beebe
@scobleizer in corporate/ DowJones land bad news MUST be reported as soon as known. Anything less gets you into Enron territory. - Bankwatch
I agree with Ken Sheppardson and Neville Hobson. Apple knew the information and were reponsible by releasing it in a timely manner. - Ontario Emperor
Of course, deliberately witholding critical information to manipulate the stock price is somethign people woudl scream about if any other company did it. - Soulhuntre from twhirl
@bankwatch makes a good point. But if Apple/Jobs knew this before the MacWorld announcement, and if they did and still put out the cokamamy story about hormone levels, Apple still should get a cursory look over by the SEC. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Jobs is not coming back, ever. The news today was just a "baby step" to that end. - oregon_tony
As a "grown up" company Apple will fail. Their primary tool is the faux elitism of their user base and the "cool" factor that lets them overcharge for minor hardware upgrades. As soon as they grow up (expand) that will fade. - Soulhuntre
I'm sure many companies would like to fail as well as Apple has! Yes, their stuff is pricey, but its demonstrably superior. I guess if you don't value your time you can pretend to save money using XP, or the now obsolete Vista, and if you still haven't learned your lesson then go have fun with Windows 7... - Indio Apache from twhirl
AAPL would have been crucified if they had waited. Mentioning the news now takes away the material disclosure & sharp stock sell off if the news would have been disclosed "next week". Waiting would have opened a mega can of worms in case anyone started selling their insider shares or stock plan shares. Now everyone gets the info at the same time to avoid the SEC trouble Apple had before although they passed the fire trials then. - Roney Smith
yessir soulhuntre, Apple, number 103 in the Fortune 500, 8th most profitable tech company... sounds pretty grown up to most grown ups... - Indio Apache from twhirl
Soulhuntre... Apple has always wisely resisted the temptation to grow too quickly, or address the least common denominator mass market. There are riches in niches, and Apple mines its niches well. - LogEx
re: Mark VandenBerg - thats my thought too, that the earlier hormone announcement may at least get some SEC review. - Bankwatch
@indio - depends on how your using the term of course. @logical - I agree... as a niche product / firm Apple excels but they have been increasingly tryign to go mainstream (sometimes well, sometimes badly). It will be interesting to watch. - Soulhuntre
