I think ones that plug in via USB - then they are recognised as a seperate audio device - meaning you can having ringing on your normal speakers and take calls on the headset. Also normal sounds can continue out of the speakers.

Mine have GN Netcom written on the side but I have no idea where I got them from - comfy padded ears and USB as mentioned above. Also they have their own mute switch on the volume control which is really useful.

I was wondering the same question last weekend. I saw these Logitech's in a shop but was sure if they are good or not. I didn't buy them but I liked some of the features like combining the options of USB connection with mini jacks if needed for flexibility. http://www.logitech.com/index...

Sennheiser is a definitely a good one and my favorite as well...

Actually, your headphones, those used for this week's twit sounded pretty good ;) Which one is that?

Jim: why is USB better than using headphones and mic jacks?
- Robert Scoble
USB is great in that it will work well on other people's machines, no matter what kind of sound hardware they have (or don't have). It can also help on low power machines because it takes some processing off the computer into the sound card that's within the USB widget (for the good ones). Not sure any of this makes any difference for Skype, the biggest difference for me for Skype is...

I used a Plantronics bluetooth headset (for mobile phones) - works really well, but I just have never had SkypeOut quality to match what you guys on TWit or TWiP get, so I don't use Skype. Have you looked at ooVoo btw? Thoughts?
- Conor Ogle
some of the sennheiser USB headsets come as a normal headset with a separate small USB soundcard/volume - so you can use it as a normal headset in a normal sound plug, as an USB soundcard for any headset, or as a pair. Very nice way of doing it, but comes with a slight price premium

Robert (another Jim here): USB phones and headsets will often have their own embedded sound chip to provide better quality audio. See for example the FREETALK Wireless stereo headset for Skype. You interviewed the sound chip company's CEO at 2008 CES Showstoppers. Watching you do this interview was my first exposure to Qik. I have used one for over a year now; great quality audio (22KHz audio bandwidth) not only for Skype but also for music which uses higher audio bandwidth than human voice.

First and most important--what's most comfortable? No point in getting something that feels like crap. I use Logitech Premium Notebook headset which is a behind the head not over the head set up. Pretty good sound quality that goes through a USB, though you can unplug the 3.5mm jacks and plug into other things. Pretty lightweight (I forget they are on sometimes). I'm considering a bluetooth just to reduce the cord chaos but haven't found one I like yet.

The sound quality of all the Logitech USB models is excellent, but as Andrew pointed out, comfort is the issue. My model (and I don't now which one because Logitech doesn't write it anywhere on the unit) is hideously uncomfortable. But I don't mind cause I usually don't have it on for more than 30 minutes tops.

There are no best headphones to use with Skype on a d-up. ;) But I bravely press on with my Logitech Stereo USB Headset 250. Works pretty well with Adobe Connect though when I can squeeze 49kbps.

@scobleizer - We're looking for the same thing. The Sennheiser PC 166 USBs have been recommended by a few people and they're 40% off at Amazon: http://bit.ly/CEpOo <-- not an affiliate link ;)
- Ryan Kuder
To clarify my earlier post: when I said sound quality, I meant MIC sound quality. You're never going to get good HiFi listening quality off a USB headset.

Took about 20 hours of travel time. Yowza. Lots of snow. The people who run NGOs are a bit sour cause they are being hit by the economy.

What will the BBC do to you if they get you?

Darren: I had to sign up for sessions. As it was I was five minutes late for the best sessions. Grrrr. That's OK, I have a few tricks up my sleeve and got into quite a few of the good ones. The real competition here is getting tickets to a great session. Arrington's sessions (I'm on one of those) were sold out in minutes.

Al: they were trying to interview me. I wasn't in the mood, to tell you the truth. I'm jet lagged and in no good mood to say anything useful. Not that you can tell the difference from a regular day. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
Did you get to touch base with Home or cell fone not working still.
- Baba
Baba: personally I'm enjoying being offline. I can call out on one of my phones, but the iPhone isn't working so inbound isn't working.

It is amazing what is created each March for Fallas and even more amazing that all but the winner get burnt to celebrate the rebirth of the year. This photo has such a nice atmosphere.

I think this is a very real problem and I hope that the people doing it wake up to it before the wrong people start reading and acting on it.

This is worth watching - it is a well balanced proposal - not to become vegitarians, but just to cut down on our meat. This is not proposed as something we should be doing for the sake of animals but as something we should be doing for us. I am not sure that I can yet manage a 50% reducation but I shall try...

I really enjoyed watching this - lots to think about - the key point the age of participation media is coming, and the reason why? Well the next generation just aren't going to sit in front of the telly and consume - they will use their time to interact - in whatever way - but they will interact. There is still a place for TV in the Media Ecosystem - but it will not be as significant.
