"the former CEO of MySQL was a big "standards" guy. if it wasn't a standard it didn't go into the software. MySQL is used in some large implementations now and going past the idiotic "standard" thing to offer users nice features at a cost of support will kill off any open source mysql" - Alen Teplitsky

IBM buying Sun Microsystems Makes No Sense - http://digg.com/linux_u...
"This makes perfect sense for IBM. Sun is into cloud computing as a service. IBM is into services and running data centers. With Sun they can virtualize all the data centers they run and save a lot of money for themselves and their customers. For the rest they will get a nice patent and tech portfolio they can merge with their own products and kill Sun's products. Sparc, Solaris, Java and a bunch of others. Just like when Compaq bought DEC and HP bought Compaq. The big loser is MS. Office is still a cash cow and IBM will now own OpenOffice and they will migrate their customers to it." - Alen Teplitsky

Is Microsoft surrounded by the Clouds? - http://digg.com/microso...
"MS is one of the largest cloud computing providers out there. XBox Live and Virtual Earth are huge. Virtual Earth doesn't get the hype that Google Maps does because it's not aimed at end users. Almost every GPS device uses it as the backend. when you buy a subscription from Garmin or Tom Tom a large chunk goes back to Microsoft. MS is what cloud computing is really about. you press a button on a device, send data to the cloud and get a response back. with IBM and Amazon they are just giving you virtual machines and you still have to build your own apps and manage them. just a rehash of the ASP fad of the late 1990's. it's OK for small businesses who don't want to worry about ISP hosting, but hardware is so dirt cheap these days it doesn't make sense for larger companies. i can get an HP server with dual quad core CPU's and 32GB RAM for around $5000." - Alen Teplitsky

Snow Leopard Server to Ramp Up Scalability and Performance - http://digg.com/apple...
"$4000 for a server? better include 32GB of RAM. we have HP where I work and after our special pricing they are dirt cheap. HP's server support is pretty good too. they always have parts onsite the next morning. their servers are so cheap it doesn't even make sense to buy extended warranties past 3 years for them. if it breaks just buy a new server. too bad they seem to last so long. we have 10 year old Compaq servers and we can still get parts." - Alen Teplitsky

Cloud Computing: Behind the Hype, There's Something Real - http://digg.com/tech_ne...
"except servers are dirt cheap these days. i'm pricing out some hardware for a new project and a dual quad core HP DL380 G5 with 32GB of RAM is around $7000 including the OS and SQL licenses which are close to half the cost. these machines will host around 3TB of data and it will grow at least 20% a year. They run daily tasks that handle hundreds of GB of data. it cheaper to keep them locally then send the data to the "cloud" and get a response back. and hardware will get even cheaper. i'd buy 64GB of RAM for these servers but it's cheaper to get 32GB this year and buy 64GB in 12-18 months." - Alen Teplitsky

MacBook Pro 17-inch first hands-on - http://digg.com/apple...
"it's not about having an extra battery, but planned obsolence on any PC laptop i can buy a new battery when the older one starts to go. i have a 4 year old Dell Inspiron that runs Vista and the battery doesn't hold a charge too well. If i wanted to i can buy a new battery and not worry about it. with this new laptop if the battery dies i have to buy a whole new laptop" - Alen Teplitsky

MacBook Pro 17-inch first hands-on - http://digg.com/apple...
"how old is the PC? Apple makes laptops with one configuration. You can buy a PC laptop with a variety of different CPU's and configs. few years ago you could save a few bucks on a laptop by buying one with a desktop CPU and it would get hot enough to cook on. i can buy a PC laptop now with 95% specs of a MBP for 1/2 the price. only thing i can't get is the aluminum case and the glass pad. Apple laptops are made by the same few companies that make PC laptops. there are a few companies that make the basic kit and sell it to companies like Dell, HP, Apple and others to customize it and brand it. This year a lot of MBP's will be made by a Chineese company called Quanta computers." - Alen Teplitsky

Why Web 2.0 Is No Bubble: Corporations Are Willing to Pay for It - The Groundswell Effect - http://conversationstarter.hbsp.com/grounds...
"there are a class of startup companies making good money right now from Web 2.0. They're not flashy and they don't grow like mushrooms. But they've got all the business they can handle and they are growing. I am talking about companies that serve corporate social application needs. This isn't the typical Web 2.0 business paradigm, since serving corporate customers means lots of client service, which is people-intensive -- it doesn't lift off miraculously like a pure technology startup." - Susan Reynolds
I think I've learnt something from a friend of mine (a great copywriter), it's actually simple but it works: Create a product, a simple one, that answers a need (don't create the need --you can't) and sell it as many times as you can. 5 dollars? ok, sell it 100 times, you have 500$, sell it 10.000 times and you have $50.000. Simple arithmetics. That's the business model, the only one IMHO. - directeur
there is a social networking bubble forming. any economic cycle the best companies are always the first ones out and then the copycats come out. seems like every other day some social site is getting VC money and their idea of a business plan is for people to log on and do something. Most of these will be gone in a few years unless they become facebook/myspace/linkedin apps. too many sites for my time - Alen Teplitsky
Susan, we are in that class you refer to and all I can say is "the ride has been a blast". You mix one part UGC, one part big corporate brand, a bunch of lawyers and nervous brand executives and what do you need? Our team of Content Moderation Specialists. It is definitely not a sexy job, but somebody has got to do it and the brands don't mind paying for it either. - Keith Bilous
i guess there are too many social networking startups that don't have a revenue generating business model. Nevertheless, iam positive about enterprise 2.0 startups. The reason being simple, enterprise is where the money is - Omfut
