The Gillmor Gang — Doc Searls, Michael Arrington, Kevin Marks, Robert Scoble, and Dan Farber — rake Comcast and Microsoft over the HTML 5 coals. Recorded live, Thursday, December 3, 2009.
- Steve Gillmor
It's a cloud that you own, that exposes "local services" like storage, identity selector config, computation, etc. to services you don't own
- Kurtiss Hare
Does this silverlight porting path just translate video, or the whole framework? If it's just video, it sounds like a WMV->MP4 codec.
- Matt M (inactive)
I don't think stream of audio or video via silverlight to a webkit browser counts as a dev platform for iphone
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
has anyone got documentation on sliverlight video playback on iPhone? I didn't see that demo
- Kevin Marks
Kurtiss - where do you own it? On Amazon? Who hosts that data? If someone else is hosting it do you really own it? The client is the best place for the user to own their data. That can be supported by a cloud service, but your client needs to control it.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: that part's up to you, it can run from your house if you're into that. otherwise it can run from your amazon or rackspace account, whatever.
- Kurtiss Hare
Kurtiss, the average user is never going to be able to do that. It has to be something native in the browser or the operating system for the user to get it.
- Jesse Stay
@Kurtiss - your Rackspace account :) Please me more ;)
- Rob La Gesse
Also, a cloud-based service can't provide near the context a desktop client can
- Jesse Stay
Internal enterprise apps are never a predictor of platforms that'll survive. I could list dozens of dead Microsoft products that were "hot" for a while until they were abandoned.
- Matt M (inactive)
Jesse, for now, but when the broadband explosion comes....
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen, even then you're never going to have full control so long as you rely on the cloud for full context. See my article above.
- Jesse Stay
"turns out, microsoft developed the killer app for chrome os" - office web apps
- Jamie
enterprise == large user count behind a firewall with a private network
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Jesse: What's the difference between the way that Windows/Mac OS X exposes my local services and the way a "personal cloud"-based OS could? It's Chrome OS' destiny ;)
- Kurtiss Hare
I've just finished installing SharePoint 2010 and now installing the Office Web Apps so I'll let you know shortly.
- Paul Shadwell
Robert, make sure you get that enterprise lecture from Steve before going on about Chatter
- Ross Mayfield
if chrome os enables a personal VPN experience that I can then allow individuals to "peek into" that would be a huge win
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Kurtiss, a personal cloud is never going to know what you're doing on Barnes and Noble vs. Borders.com at the same time. Please read my article above.
- Jesse Stay
Paul: NO. Office for Web is ALL JavaScript.
- Robert Scoble
"very loyal to office" == it's a huge pain and cost to translate all those proprietary docs to something else
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Jesse, cloud based services can bring context using social web - bring context in form you contacts and activities
- Kevin Marks
Kevin, only to an extent. You still need the client to control that process.
- Jesse Stay
Kevin, I saw the demo but haven't the docs for it. Just passes the video off directly to the vid player on iPhone. Here is the demo URL http://www.iis.net/iphone
- Jerry Schuman
Robert: Do you think they did that for increased cross browser support?
- Paul Shadwell
many companies are just scared to move to the web It seems an insecure place to them and they take the IT guys (who get paid to manage Exchange) word for it. "You don't want to do that. It's insecure." Few CEOs outside our business will challenge talk like that.
- Matt Terenzio
I truly love that indictment. LOL...it's only Obama, Congress has not a damn thing to do with it.
- Karoli
I have multiple clients that draw on my twitter, Poco and other cloud contexts. phones, laptops desktops use them
- Kevin Marks
yea, like obama has control over the senate and house or the huge military infrastructure that bush had 8 years to setup
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Microsoft won't stop innovating, but they'll be innovating in the wrong direction (closed platforms, etc.)
- Matt M (inactive)
Jason sounds like Ehrlich's genocidal nonsense, not any Libertarians I know
- Kevin Marks
when all the normal workers - not those that are like most silicon valley startup wonks - can stop worrying about where the money for the next health bill comes from, then they will be able to spend time making work more productive
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Tim O'Reilly talks about Microsoft being a major player in the open web...
- Cliff Gerrish
Kevin, did you get the URL for the IIS demo?
- Jerry Schuman
Microsoft innovates but it's not accessible to the murmuring rabble. Like me. at least, not yet (other than Silverlight)
- Karoli
Microsoft is the greatest squandering of wealth in the History of business
- Stephen Pickering
Microsoft is a leader in the Information card space, and they're doing some amazing stuff with .Net, etc
- Jesse Stay
(note that I write this from a *nix-based MacBook Pro)
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: see Craig Burton's rant on MSFT's implementation of cardspace.
- Cliff Gerrish
Microsoft is the new Newspaper business
- Matt Terenzio
and how is Salesforce managing this change in direction and focus... open source and open protocols I suspect
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Client wars have been going on for 2 decades.. it doesn't matter. You will have multiple native and web based clients from now until the cows come home.
- Jerry Schuman
warlords of tech, each guarding their own fiefdom.
- Karoli
The apathy of the user community regarding clients was evidenced by the failure of "Write Once, Run Everywhere"
- Jerry Schuman
I think you just hit the nail on the head bear :-)
- Paul Shadwell
Robert it already exists.. DOM manipulations
- Jerry Schuman
Jerry: DOM Manipulations + Action Cards gets you there.
- Cliff Gerrish
the major change comes with context awareness. We're almost there.. very close in my estimation.
- Jerry Schuman
Jerry: Action Cards are all about contextual browsing.
- Cliff Gerrish
There are no generic enclosures is what I think Dave meant
- Matt Terenzio
meta data is data - it can be included with other meta data or consumed as is. what is key is removing the silo mentality -- open data api's to allow neutral use cases
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Twitter's 'features' have been a massive user #fail
- Karoli
twitter has always been a feature to be included in other apps -- they *are* a pipe
- Karoli
yes, they have rolled out a number of new features but they still have fundamental stability issues when followers drop off your account, when api calls still return random errors and other quality of life issues
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
btw: all those things you just mentioned extended Twitters discrete extensions of the backend. You're seeing twitter manipulate and compartmentalize their schema
- Jerry Schuman
bear, not only that, but they're anti-community. by sending that message, they tell me they intend to be a pipe for my data, not a host.
- Karoli
i've become so accustomed to their slowness of innovation, i certainly don't take the recently developed features for granted like I did when G or FF innovates...sad, really.
- Kurtiss Hare
still looking for those 'features'. closing conversations, making retweets a metric, and adding lists...?
- Karoli
While I might agree with ppl discounted MS I think discounting Ray Ozzie is a HUGE mistake. Especially if Ballmer gets forced out of MS.
- Rob La Gesse
it's all DATA SOUP. Apple had it right with the Newton ;-)
- Jerry Schuman
Authoritative ecosystems of record will still rule the day.
- Cliff Gerrish
don't mind shorter shows if they are focused. except for the "into the ditch" diversion of the political discussion this was a nice tightly focused show
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Just tried that VMware chrome OS image, it is a SUSE Linux distribution with GNOME, GDM is customized with Google Chrome logo, and also Google Chrome browser, that's it for now :S.
- Orlando Pozo
Arg! I can confirm, it's a fake (the live cd) :(
- Brandon
Let's see Brandon, I am anxious to test this thing :)
- Orlando Pozo
The build is also pretty broken. It is missing a bunch of the Google packages like google-gflags. I am almost done with a build - we'll see :)
- Bret Taylor
I built it earlier, check it out at: http://gdgt.com/google... And we just released a VirtualBox and Bootable USB image (not mentioned in that TC article).
- Jon Ursenbach
Why the focus on just e-mail (out of curiosity)? Why not the phone number, and what about the 24 hour storage limit for data? Any word on those opening up more with users' permission?
- Jesse Stay
I'm still watching, btw - maybe it gets answered later
- Jesse Stay
I'm also very curious of their plans to open up the search API - that would be much more interesting than their current roadmap.
- Jesse Stay
In regards to permalinks Facebook does have permalinks on fan Pages
- Jesse Stay
Re: the newsfeed Robert should really interview someone on Facebook's newsfeed team. That would be a very interesting interview. I don't think the FriendFeed team can answer those questions.
- Jesse Stay
Re: the platform I do really want to know Facebook's plans for real-time API integration. Will they adopt PSHB or RSSCloud or a standard of their own to provide real-time updates to the stream?
- Jesse Stay
Maybe you should ask Robert to interview the realtime API integration team too. Oh wait.
- Steve Gillmor
from iPhone
Jesse: I'm not the only member of the Gillmor Gang. In fact, I'm far from its most important member. Or did you mean to post this stuff to me for other parts of building43?
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I meant it would be good for building43. But yes, it would be interesting for Gillmor Gang as well.
- Jesse Stay
we'll have stream guys on when they have something to say, which judging by the Roadmap announcements, will be sooner than later.
- Steve Gillmor
Stream Splicing — Threadsy's Rob Goldman with Kevin Marks, Robert Scoble, and Dan Farber. Recorded live Thursday, October 22, 2009. Full transcript below the video, courtesy of Simulscribe.
- Steve Gillmor
Interesting as usual, the ecosystem is set to explode with the Listing API and curation is what everyone needs to be working on. Nice to hear more opinions about status updates converging and reading lists trending, as the potential issues with proxy rights to link data and a Facebook App Store. Looking forward for the transcript.
- Alberto Saavedra
I wonder what the engineering decision was to not use a WSGI interface.
- mikepk
mikepk: it supports WSGI, but it is not WSGI by default because WSGI does not support non-blocking I/O for things like hanging connections. See http://www.tornadoweb.org/documen....
- Bret Taylor
This actually is a very good piece of code! Thanks folks!
- directeur
cool, Bret, thanks :) I was just heading through the docs now.
- mikepk
Thanks for doing this, Bret! That's some pretty cool stuff.
- Keith Bourgoin
I'm hacking my own python web framework at the moment, so now the choice on whether I want to switch gears to this or not. I'm liking what I see so far.
- mikepk
Nice new title Brett.."Facebook Director of Products".. a good sign of things to come!
- Chris Myles
very very glad to hear this bit: "Tornado is a core piece of infrastructure that powers FriendFeed's real-time functionality, which we plan to actively maintain."
- Chris Heath
A very good project!...you know if will be possibile to use Tornado with other technogies except Python (such as JEE, Ruby On Rails, etc.)?
- Nicola Junior Vitto
Cristo: we tried to use the official Python coding conventions, though we may have inadvertently strayed. Those conventions are: ClassNames, method_names, variable_names
- Bret Taylor
Brilliant! I hope you can provide very valuable input for the next round of #python WSGI, which desperately needs a next round ;)
- Uche Ogbuji
thx Mike, but this is a kind of eventmachine (that sounds good) for Ruby, not a Tornado client or wrapper...isn't it?
- Nicola Junior Vitto
Excellent! Thank you. Was eagerly waiting for the day to come after looking this just 1 month ago; "changeset: 5afb8a445cad / date: 2009-08-11 16:34:48 / description: Initial open source packages" http://changelog.friendfeed.com/2009...
- NaHi
from m.ctor.org
Chris, yes it is fixed.. I swear it was broken ..
- deerstep
Ohhh, ummm, btw, your underhanded behind the scenes sell out still rankles my human decency, & a lot of others too, as should yours...thumbs down/dislike x 47.5 million dollars, however not being bitter of course, keep ignorance & bliss
- sofarsoShawn <Pop-Rocks>
that's the sound of I believe 100000000? or so hands clapping...& giving you the BOOOO-URNS if I'm not mistaken...
- sofarsoShawn <Pop-Rocks>
oh you sonsabitchez this fscking rules! why so badass, ff? thank. you. :)
- mike
So, can we say; Python is the future?
- Özkan Altuner
Nice code. Started to look at it today. Thanks for doing this. Now to start testing this on some projects I had been working on.
- Altan Khendup
@bret just out of curiosity - what would necessitate usage of such an engine for a *personal* project? :)
- Michael Bravo
Michael: it is a nice framework to use for any project in my opinion (though I am clearly biased). If you are doing anything real-time like the chat demo, something like Tornado is certainly necessary/useful regardless of the size of the project.
- Bret Taylor
from email
@bret and for little-sized hardware? should have try it on Maemo based :)))
- Отборнейший бред
@silpol I kinda fail to see Maemo devices being used for servers (unless it's some kind of satellite-based or other covert server maybe :) )
- Michael Bravo
from IM
@mbravo you never know... there are some unusual (and cool) apps for web servers, granted you abstain (on purpose) from classical models, e.g.server farm somewhere there and herds of clients connecting to it...
- Отборнейший бред
I think this is the best answer for the ultimate question: "Does python needs yet another web framework?" While most of us would say why, when one come across this, a real world proven technology, serving zillions of pages a day, one would say, well, why not. actually, why not even take it an try to integrate out next web app with it? great job! seems like joining FB won't do you any harm ;-)
- Tzury Bar Yochay
wait, leo is complaining that the news channel gets 3 minutes out of a 32 second video and he spends how many minutes discussing how the news channel spent 3 minutes on it?...
- jccalhoun
Yahoo leads because of the bundle deal they did with SBC as the default service for DSL users. Hotmail's up there just because Microsoft uses it as a global account identifier for all their online services.
- Ken Sheppardson
I'll bet if you look at *active* accounts, Gmail's up there.
- Ken Sheppardson
i think everyone who's really into Windows 7 probably already has it
- x5315
John needs exciting tech news before he falls asleep
- dawgbytez
Did everyone see that Jon had already left?
- x5315
Paul wearing a little pointy hat, blowing a noisemaker.
- Ken Sheppardson
Windows has massive share, because they do things like House Party. They canvass all areas of the market. I can see this would appeal to some people I know.
- Fergal Barry
Windows is on 90% of computers partly because MS takes marketing very seriously. House Party is segmented marketing. Isn't that an easy explanation?
- Fergal Barry
I'm downloading the Windows 7 Enterprise trial :)
- Seth Hoogeboom
The reason Google kept the "I'm feeling lucky" button is because they did a study and they found that people find it "comforting", so they kept it for comfort
- CG
The whole Flash thing is the biggest non-story of last week. Looks like everybody run out of news.
- notagolfer
"It's possible to become too dry, too corporate, too much about making money. I think what's delightful about 'I'm Feeling Lucky' is that it reminds you there are real people here," Google exec Marissa Mayer explained, or at least tried to. -- http://valleywag.gawker.com/324927...
- Ken Sheppardson
Apple is probably using something similar to nspluginwrapper http://freshmeat.net/project... which 64-bit browsers on linux used for a long time to get the 32-bit flash plugin to work.
- Ghworg
VMware May Be Microsoft’s Top Rival After Google ....looks interesting!
- Fergal Barry
Leo, you should look at Nokia N900, an attempt by Nokia to compete with the IPHONE, with motion sensors
- RALPH
i've been a Cingular/ATT customer for years... they have always lagged behind every other carrier inn features, speed, etc
- Hipp
from IM
She's right the global leader that is AT&T is the last carrier on the planet to offer MMS to iPhone users.
- John Brazel
No one should ever feel sorry for AT&T.
- Joel Lovato
I'm not watching the show, but with virtualized XP, MSFT is trying to price VMware out of the Market. I hear it's pretty damn nifty. How many people are going to shell out $$$ for VMware when virtualized XP covers 75% of use cases.
- Roberto Bonini
from iPhone
It has a keyboard, that apparently is quite easy to use... check out this recent link from maemo.org Leo, http://maemo.org/communi...
- RALPH
Those invites were sent only to young people :)
- notagolfer
Thanks Roberto. VMware article on del.icio.us page, but not discussed yet. I'd love to hear more about it. In the link from del.icio.us it says VMWare acquired SpringSource, a maker of open-source software development tools, to raise the stakes.
- Fergal Barry
Only if it's about the Beatles catalog comes to iTunes
- rwa2play
I think Apple is looking to steal Zune's thunder and he'll show.
- Joel Lovato
I think Leo overestimates the significance of 9/9/09 as a "Beatles" event. It's first and foremost...particularly for anybody under 50... just a neat day from a numerological standpoint.
- Ken Sheppardson
A yellow Beatles iPod. Which is waterproof.
- Ghworg
Beatles catalog comes to iTunes...and Paul and Ringo come to the presentation. Only then would Steve show up.
- rwa2play
Houston Chronicle FTW - I grew up reading Silverman's articles.
- Jesse Stay
"Box Office Mojo reports that, since 1978, superhero movies have grossed over $7.28 billion at the domestic box office, with an average gross of $94.6 million per film." -- http://www.cnbc.com/id...
- Ken Sheppardson
Disney is currently owning the little girls market with Hannah Montanna and other things on the Disney Channel. They recently rebranded their Disney Toon channel as Disney DX in an attempt to get little boys to watch their stuff. Buying Marvel is a way to get that market.
- jccalhoun
Editorializing is that a euphemism for rant?
- John Brazel
Jeez... it doesn't have a "birthday". There was no day on which it existed, the day before which it didn't. It was a gradual, incremental thing. Like evolution. On what day was the first human born? [Adam and Eve notwithstanding, and I'm sure somebody will bring up the fact they weren't "born"...]
- Ken Sheppardson
Look at some of the photos of those who created the Internet. A prerequisite was that you had to have an awesome beard. The link between the hippies at Woodstock and the Internet stands revealed (Beards!!!).
- JR Holmes
Whitman was certainly there for the Skype purchase.
- Ken Sheppardson
Well, thanks for trying Leo...woulda liked some perspective on SpringSource. I don't know much about them...maybe work the topic some other time :)
- Fergal Barry
TIME: eBay recently paid at least $2.6 billion for the Internet phone company Skype, and the two words most frequently used to describe the purchase were "head scratching." Was the price excessive? WHITMAN: We obviously think it was fair. We looked at value in Skype in a number of different ways: the amount we paid on a per-user basis, discounted cash flows, etc. We also looked at what we thought Skype could do on its own and with eBay. -- http://www.time.com/time...
- Ken Sheppardson
TIME: What will take to make growth even more dynamic? WHITMAN: That's one of the reasons we're excited about Skype. It can create a new way for buyers and sellers to communicate. It actually will help us get into new categories. For example, if you're a web designer, it's hard for you to sell your product on eBay - what you want to do is connect and find out what the buyer wants.
- Ken Sheppardson
Leo's Dutch sounds like Goldmember from Austin Powers
- Shawn Cleghorn
Q: What about buying Skype? Whitman: We liked Skype and still like Skype as a standalone business—a $400 million, four-year-old. Skype is doing more business as a four-year-old than eBay, Yahoo, or even Google did. We saw potential synergies between Skype and eBay. The next year or so will prove out if we were right. We’ve only had our management team in there for three months. Prior to...

Carbonite is still a sponsor - but you're more than welcome to use another solution! ;-) Do you prefer Backblaze to S3 with Jungle Disk?
- Leo Laporte
Leo, I use S3 with Jungle Disk but I am really digging Dropbox over S3. Do you see any advantage to stay with S3 over dropbox?
- Jeremy Behrens
I haven't looked at Jungle Disk in a long, long time but at $0.15 per GB-Month it seems closer to Dropbox than a set-it-and-forget-it background backup system like Carbonite or Backblaze. (Backblaze is $5/mo for unlimited storage)
- Ken Sheppardson
I have to say that this was a good TWiT
- Seth Hoogeboom
from IM
Once again another great episode! Love the How Old is the Internet really story.
- Victor Aroma
I'm pleased to announce that when the Gillmor Gang returns this Thursday at 1PM Pacific, it will be sponsored by Rackspace and streamed live on Building43's new RealTime Network channel. We'll be doing some testing between now and then. First up is my conversation with FriendFeed-->Facebook's Paul Buchheit. MG Siegler's summary is here:...
Steve thank you for doing this! The world is a very dull place without the gang!
- Michael Pinto
Great to see The Gillmor Gang returning to the Interwebs! :) Will the episodes be available as audio and/or video podcasts for later downloading? Just in case I miss the live show...
- Daniel Chow
Will the Gillmor Gang be available as a mp3 download via podcast feed?
- Christian Burns
from iPhone
PS Remember what we learned from Jason: Make it a point to tweet a thank you to @Rackspace
- Michael Pinto
:) Thanks, Michael. Rackspace is very pleased to help bring Gillmor Gang back to the 'tubes!
- Rob La Gesse
Since Steve never seems to respond to download questions can someone be sure to record it and torrent it or such, I've never understood the whole "real time is the new black if you're not here to catch the show live tough shit" unspoken message that seems to have been going on for awhile. I can't be the only one put off by this, the content is compelling, so I put up with it, I wish I had the willpower to not listen out of protest. :)
- Michael Breslin
Good to know Steve, I've seen the question asked so many times and never answered, I must have missed the time you did answer, my mistake, bottom line: I think the GG is the best thing on my ipod and when I can't get it on there and can't catch the show due to work it sucks. :)
- Michael Breslin
I commend Steve for his dogged pursuit of the Real time Web aka Infinity Chip, though it is brutally painful at times to follow and/or be part of every step along the way. I too vote for a nice simple "old school" rss feed for the audio only recording. Then again, I am probably missing the point.
- Jason Adams
Jason: only that the Gang is returning on video. Today I listened to a video cast of Meet the Press in the car, worked beautifully, and when I wanted to see the last few minutes of Kennedy footage, rewound and watched. Whether it is delivered by RSS or streaming is up to the user. In fact, it was easier to download directly via iPhone iTunes than synching the phone to the RSS feed on the Mac. Interestingly, it continues to download in the background while I go through email.
- Steve Gillmor
Was that Meet the Press video cast live? The issue of video versus audio is moot for me, if I don't feel like watching I don't have to, it's the time shifted aspect that people are always asking for Steve. It seems you're commited to get the show in downloadable form and that's all I was ever asking for. That the show is now in video format is great for many, I generally listen to the majority of content I consume (even if its format is video). Thanks again, can't wait for today's GG!
- Michael Breslin
We are pleased to announce that the Gillmor Gang is back - and delivered through the Real Time Network on building43.com. Gillmor Gang (with video!) will air live on Thursdays, at 1PM Pacific time. Rackspace is happy to sponsor Gillmor Gang, and the Real Time Network. This cooperative effort will continue building43's efforts to educate, inform...
Congratulations, Rob - I know you've been working to make this happen on your end. So, when is that break coming you were talking about taking? :)
- Robert J Taylor
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be an archive! I can't watch video on my work pc! Can't wait for the Gilmor Gang to happen again!
- ursi
WOW, just made my day, Gillmor is my dowsing rods for the attention economy the rest of the world is just figuring out we are living in
- David Stratton
How are you guys managing the video feeds from multiple locations for this show? Would love for you to share your secret :-)
- Chris Nadeau
Robert, could you please explain the hard- and software-setup using for the live-stream?
- HansVanRock
Hans: We haven't announced the hardware and software we are using to stream the Gang yet, but for starters it's powered by NewTek Tricaster.
- Steve Gillmor
Looking forward to this, and would like to hear about the tech too
- Kevin Marks
from Android
I'll be asleep on the other side of the world. Let us know when you get the RSS feed up, Steve :)
- Edward Coffey
Plans on a downloadable file? I don't think the boss would appreciate me walking around the store with headphones on. :-)
- Larry Walker
Clicking the embedded viewer works at any hour in any part of the planet.
- Steve Gillmor
Cool, so I just need to write a script to click that link and record the stream so the file is waiting for me when I sync my MP3 player. Modern technology makes it so much easier than when we had to use clunky old VCRs to record things!
- Edward Coffey
you'll be able to download the MP4 as soon as Google fixes a bug they're working on.
- Steve Gillmor
Excellent, thanks Steve. (which bug?)
- Edward Coffey
. @edwardc I am sure the mp3 will be available on the gilmor gang bootleg feed
- Christian Burns
from iPhone
if everyone insists on bootlegging, then won't worry about Google fixing the bug
- Steve Gillmor
no bootlegger me....just need something that will play on my iphone after the fact. :)
- Karoli
No bootlegging here either, just need something to show up in iTunes (automatically) with the rest of the podcasts.
- PXLated
sounds like you will have at least a few options. I'm not planning to release audio only, so you'll need to either get a blindfold or go bottleg
- Steve Gillmor
well, we'll give it a try, see how it rolls.
- Karoli
Will there be official 'Gillmor Gang' blindfolds available in the Building 43 gift shop?
- Cliff Gerrish
Can I get a pair of "driver"-style GG blindfolds, please?
- Robert J Taylor
from iPhone
Attention wise, video is much more expensive than audio. I don't have the money to devote an hour of my eyes and ears to the gill or gang at this time.
- Christian Burns
from iPhone
Christian, I think what they're saying is that you can put the MP4 on your playback device and listen to it and ignore the video component. I know that works on iPods and iPhones.
- Dave Winer
Dave, you are as unproductive as you've ever been. What I've said is that RSS is in the process of being disrupted by micromessaging, and no amount of name calling is going to change that. Your attempts to reinvent RSS will not get traction if you continue to slime the messenger. And having this discussion here underlines how partisan your attacks are.
- Steve Gillmor
The message above is out of context because Dave Winer deleted the message to which I am responding. I thought about saving his message and reprinting it below where only the owner of this thread could remove it, but figured it wasn't worth it. This is also why I never respond to anything in a thread Dave owns unless I don't care if it gets erased or the context removed.
- Steve Gillmor
Where's the Winer Watcher when you need it?
- Matthew Gifford
The iPhone has a bug that will not allow you to download over the air for consuming later mp3s or mp4s unless they are an enclosure to an RSS feed.
- Christian Burns
from iPhone
once Google fixes their bug (Wednesday) you should be able to download via RSS.
- Steve Gillmor
Steve, the msg you're referring to was here just a few seconds, I realized it'd provoke the kind of response it has, and decided I didn't want to go there. Re being unproductive, I've had a cold this week and have been unable to do dev work, but I'm feeling better and expect to releas some new software this week. Don't expect TC to cover it, as usual. Finally Steve as you know the <cloud> element has been in RSS for eight years, hardly a retrofit.
- Dave Winer
"Robert Scoble and I ran into freshly-acquired FriendFeed cofounder Paul Buchheit at a brunch on Sunday. I pulled out my trusty Android myTouch and with his permission asked him a few questions about the sale to Facebook a week ago."
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
what happens to all your titles? Will they stay @ FB also or do they have their 'own' titles for you guys.
- kartik vaithyanathan
my request to Paul would be to write a series of blog posts (or maybe a book) on the transition from FF to FB :-)
- kartik vaithyanathan
Wow, I was really surprised how young this Paul Buchheit looked on the video. He can't be any younger than maybe 23? No way can be purchase alcohol without showing ID!
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
They say the camera removes 10 years.
- Paul Buchheit
@Vincent: You beat me to it. Reading that article made it incredibly clear to me that I make this mistake all the time. And I never seem to finish anything :P
- Joel Webber
I'm guilty of this too. Strangely, I've been pushing myself to spend more time talking about my ideas thinking that I would feel more internal pressure to see them to completion. From empirical analysis, I can safely say this has not worked as well as I had hoped. I think I have an idea of how to fix it, but I'm not going to tell you what it is.
- Kelly Norton
I've seen this work well for others in that they got credit for ideas that they just talked about, rather than actually did. Any method of counteracting that?
- Clare Dibble
@Clare: Well, not talking about your ideas might counteract that tendency, but then you'd be stuck without sounding boards for your ideas. I find it's great to talk about ideas, so that you can think about them more clearly. But when I decide to actually build something, I try to keep my mouth shut until I have something to show for it.

@ Felicia: Yes!! LBP is the first game I'm going to get. When I played it over the holidays at a friends house, it was the driving reason behind my desire to get a PS3 :)

- Alice Liu
@Jennie - i've never played it but i love sackboy. and it's gotten such good reviews. my only problem is i am totally anti-social and i hear it's a game better-enjoyed with a crowd

How do people feel about blu-ray? Is it worth investing in or should it be skipped in favor of whatever disc-less technology comes next?
- Dan Hsiao
There are a couple of movies that seem to play really well on Blu-Ray but to be honest, Blu-Ray itself isn't reason enough for me to spend money on a new player. Now, if it's a Blu-Ray player that also plays video games, well, I'd be more willing to open up my wallet ;)
- Jennie Lin
We've been acquired by Facebook! We are really excited about joining the Facebook team. (Note: FriendFeed will continue to operate - see the blog post for details)
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
"FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being. We're still figuring out our longer-term plans for the product with the Facebook team." Those are NOT encouraging things to read as a FF user.
- Hiding in Two Corners
Sniff... not sure if I'm excited about this. But I have enormous respect for the FriendFeed team... so, I assume they believe in the move as more than an exit strategy.
- Michael Leggett
Coolest web 2.0 site I've ever seen & used. I hope things don't derail. Ads will be coming soon, which is fine, but.... then what 's next? Please no quizzes!
- Ben Hanten
Who would have thought that after Facebook were shamelessly being "inspired" by FriendFeed, the inevitable would have happened?
- Tyson Key
Hey guys, keep in mind that Facebook is blocked in workplaces across the nation. 250 million casual users commenting about last night's party does not intelligent conversation make.
- Hector
yes you have just failed at failing, no it is not a double negative.
- Bahriye
I really can't see how FB would buy FF only to shut it down. There are way too many innovations and features FF has that FB honestly needs. I'm looking forward.
- Harry Wolff
Oh, this does not make me happy. Not at all! I've stayed off of Facebook intentionally and FriendFeed is my favorite social network. This is like when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees. :>(
- Larry Hawes
i have stopped using FB for the most part and liked FF alot more. now FF will go the way of FB. screwed again.

Berge Gazen beat your score in Mafia Wars

Bravo Bret! Been following your successes ever since we had the opportunity to work together on the YellowPages.ca / Google Maps Canada deal. Congrats!

- Alex Scrivener
seems the only ppl happy here are the ones in the biz or who stand to profit from the merger.
- Joe Silence
I guess we should get ready to get poked by our supposed friends and have various shit thrown at us? Plus 5,000 requests by apps that nearly all suck.
- Joey Gibson
Painful. And apparently I completely misunderstood what FF was trying to accomplish both technically and as an organization. I guess Facebook must have dangled a pretty big bag of money in front of them.
- Ken Sheppardson
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! :/
- Tyson Key
I will reserve judgement, i don't like or use FB but if FF maintains it's current goodness i don't care who cuts the checks.
- SteVe "Beefy Miracle" C
I hope this doesn't turn into an APP filled hunk of crap. I love FriendFeed, it was the untouched gem of microblogging. I don't want Mafia Wars invited in my FriendFeed!!! Congrats on the sale though.

- Joe Silence
I read the blog post and one statement stands out to me "FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being." The time being. This is not just bad, I think it may be #FAIL
- berchman
Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.
- dgw
"Relationship Status: It's complicated" comes to mind. ;)
- Tyson Key
Wow, I finally sign up, and read this. This could end up being a very bad thing for FF fans: "Your FriendFeed friend just signed up on this poll, would you like to too?"
- Brian Bommarito
Does this mean that we'll be seeing an influx of webcam spammers, a la Twitter? Along with abolishment of the rooms feature, crappification of the search feature, and more "privacy features" that really just put more nails in the openness coffin?
- Tyson Key
Some people will do whatever their friends request........
- Michael Muller
I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about?
- Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form.
- Paul Nash
Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this...
- Tarmo Aidantausta
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now.
- Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team!
- Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me.
- Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us
- Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting.
- Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed...

- Ton Zijp
NASTY NASTY BAD BAD. But we'll see...
- Daniel Morgan
I don't know, Like it? or dislike it?
- Ömer Balamir
What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether?
- Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step!
- Robin Barooah
I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. -
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users.
- Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends...
- CannonGod
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on.
- Akiva
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook.
- zio bonino
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook?
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.
- Jim the Blatant
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything.
- zio bonino
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future.
- Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too.
- Vishal Verma
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what?
- paula simoes ☃
"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook.
- Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed!
- Alex Lomas
Just great. I'm certainly not very happy about this. Let's just hope FB doesn't ruin FF. Ugh.
- axolote
Who cares? Nothing's gonna change in our pitiful lifes.
- bluretina
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there.
- Michael Netsch
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now.
- ayca
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys.
- Chieze Okoye
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done.
- Kevin J Hatton
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users.
- Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties?
- Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team
- Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea.............
- Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on...
- Tate
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would.
- Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook?
- Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook.
- Andy Bakun
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn.
- Jeremy Buff
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone.
- tollie williams
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it.
- Vince DeGeorge
from iPhone
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake.
- Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends!
- Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good.
- Ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr...
- Kemal Y.
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.
- Ken Sheppardson
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff?
- Flavio
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years.
- Andy Bakun
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Quote «Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. Some employees will now report to Cox, others to engineering head Mike Schroepfer. Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. A lot of my friends only share stuff via the Facebook wall/feed, so if Facebook is able to make their feed more like the FF feed (i.e. good, instead of sucktacular) through this acquisition, it's mostly a win for me in the end.

Looks like I'm going to repeat the same thing many others did. My first reaction was "Oh my..." I have refused to join Facebook due to its philosophy while I have been with FriendFeed from the beginning for its. I'm sad and somewhat apprehensive.
- Sean Leather
Please say that facebook.com will be shutting down, and the combined company will still be called FriendFeed... I bet it won't happen, though.
- Tyson Key
"Regarding FB/FF - Here's how it's [probably] going to work. You will most likely have an account merge, all of the services FriendFeed supports will now be aggregated on Facebook, and all of your FriendFeed friends will be in a "list" on Facebook. The FF Groups will become Facebook Groups. The FF lists will become Facebook Lists." http://ff.im/6pNxq

Congrats, but concerned that FriendFeed and its tools may disappear. Merging the tools with Facebook seems impossible.
- Mike Reynolds

- Reyna Carlos
Exciting news guys. I am actually looking forward to your collaboration with / work for FB. No matter what people may or may not like about FB, it does succeed in reaching a more "diverse" audience compared to most other Web 2.0/social web companies. Paired with your team's excellence in realizing features that succeed in pleasing the geekiest of Web 2.0 affine individuals, I think you are steering towards exciting waters :)
- Mustafa K. Isik
*heart sinks* actually a bit of shock - I think that Facebook will leave Friendfeed as-is but I don't think there is hope for future innovation in Friendfeed since their best superstar team members will be pulled onto 'more important' Facebook issues...

- orionstarr
Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for.

The community won't be there. Been on FB longer than any other, don't have nearly the relationship or sense of community there that I do here or on Twitter.
- Karoli
Karoli: that is due to the effectiveness of the FF platform and interface, which help to join conversations and find interesting people more so than FB does

I heard about sweetcron.com last night (via http://ff.im/6pR2w). Maybe it's time to move from centralized to distributed again.
- Don Faulkner
Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P
- Don Faulkner
I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.
- Ru Viljoen
I don't understand why everyone is so negative about the situation?
- orionstarr
@orionstarr - it's like Starbucks buying your neighborhood coffee shop and saying it still cares about the customers. You know it's just not going to be the same as what you've come to love.
- Robin Barooah
Presumably FF will go on the back burner - and the team will try and "fix" Facebook.
- Tim Tyler
I've watched Facebook morph from a relatively organised and well implemented social networking tool into the hulking mess it is now - and I really, really hope that a similar thing doesn't happen here with the inevitable changes this will bring about.
- Leslie Moore
Come on guys, out with the long-term game plan, this is tedious.
- Andrew Eglinton
Teach Facebook how to be FriendFeed. Let the small but fast teach the big but slow. Don't forget what Paul says - don’t be evil.
- whatidiscover
Friendfeed is not as huge as Facebook but you're doing such terrible work on it. Friendfeed is facing so many many problems these days though facebook doesn't seem to have one. Why?
- Sing For Absolution
Never commented on this post. 2.5 years later, from a purely selfish persepective, the best thing that ever happened. It allowed me to drop out of the "Which social network is best", Scobilian crap and get down to the main reason I'm here... to communicate with my friends and share experiences.
- Johnny
Funny. Two years later to the day, Rochelle took me to court to sign our temporary divorce papers. The day after my birthday in both cases. Huzzah!
- Akiva
Posterous adds Google Maps integration – the service now automatically retrieves the geolocation information in your photos and embeds Google Maps below the photo. - http://thenextweb.com/2009...
Oh snap, Scobleizer has a choice now. I might actually have to be nice to him. :-) But seriously, congrats Garry and the rest of the Posterous team on a great feature.
- Bruce Lewis
If anyone auto-posts from Posterous to FF and elsewhere I would love to know if the google map is included int the post - post links to examples here.
- Mike Bracco
It's a shame really, I like to edit and add filters to my iPhone pics rather than post raw with naff lighting. Also, does anyone know if this is by default? Because I don't want my home location being broadcast when posting pics from around the house :-\
- CannonGod
Jake: it should be off by default. you can set what occurs when you post a picture by going to your settings page.
- Mike Bracco
from BuddyFeed
Mike: I can't say I can see where abouts :-S As an idea, could one set a 'safe zone' around your house so that all GeoTags from their are not published, but otherwise they are? That would be neat :)
- CannonGod
I'm not sure I understand why someone would want their Posterous photos to be geo-tagged. How does that feature add to the entertainment value of a particular piece of content? Obviously it's informative, but, even with that, I still don't see why someone would want to have maps accompanying all the photos on their blog. Just curious ;-)
- Brad Williamson
Brad: I hear you. To your point, the Google Map doesn't appear below the photo UNTIL you click the location link below the photo to have it expand out.
- Mike Bracco
from BuddyFeed
Does FF import a geo information of posterous entry? (Does Posterous publish MediaRSS with geo tag?)
- NaHi
from f2p
Brad is right, the link is quite discreet. Regards necessity, I know an Archaeology friend who wanted this feature as he was keeping a travelling journal. Personally I like the option, though most of what I post doesn't need this extra information - generally I'll be telling people about the place I took the photo as part of the post. I rarely post photos with no accompanying text to make sense of them :-p
- CannonGod
You can now disable comments on your FriendFeed entries using the "Edit" menu. When you disable comments, all existing comments will remain, but no new comments will be allowed.
You can use the feature to stop conversations that are getting out of hand, or to post entries for which you don't want any discussion. Likes will continue to be allowed when comments are disabled.
- Bret Taylor
I'm not sure how I feel about this one.
- Gunnybear ™
Chris: yeah, like when you're trying to use the first few comments for your own commentary. It looks like you can. Eeeeeeeeee!
- Mark Trapp
I think it helps those people who feel they are being made fun of in their posts.
- Zulema ❧ spicy cocoa tart
Mark: yep, re-enabling involves just clicking a link
- Bret Taylor
+1 Gunny. It seems like an interesting and somewhat useful idea on it's own, but I can see many applications for it that aren't exactly in the interests of everyone, or even specific people, for what it's worth...
- Tyson Key
Sweet, thanks Bret. One bug I'm noticing is that if I disable comments on my own feed (that is, from http://friendfeed.com/itafroma), my picture shows up next to the entry and doesn't go away until I refresh.
- Mark Trapp
Bret, it looks like right now it doesn't show that comments are disabled until a user tries to comment, then it errors and says that comments are disabled. Not sure if that is widespread or if I just had a weird interaction.
- joey
Of course, the existing moderation options were already a double-edged sword. "Sticky" posts in rooms seems like a good extension to this, on the flip-side, though.
- Tyson Key
I can see the use for this, but that doesn't mean I like it.
- Shawn Kirsch
Actually, it may be displaying properly for me now. EDIT: I see, it just isn't updated in realtime ;)
- joey
While I welcome this addition to the many useful features on FF, I do feel that you should see all comments on a subject, as this enriches our experience.
- Kevin J Hatton
Scoble got thousands of people to join Friendfeed! How about a little love for the big guy!
- Mark
I see the main use for such a feature as being a way to post 'announcement' or 'stick post' entries but we'd really need the comment box back with the share box and the option to disable comments from there, i.e. before it's posted.
- Kol Tregaskes
You know you have influence when a company will modify their product to get you to use it again ;)
- Mark
Bret: the error message you get if you try to comment on a comment blocked post takes you to the generic FAQ page - perhaps it should go to something specific explaining the blocked comments feature.
- Mike Bracco
feature request: i want FF to flow in a <marquee> format instead of a stream! (kidding)
- sean percival
Is this an attempt to make FriendFeed more like a blogging platform? It sort of feels that way to me.
- Mitch
@scoble I'm trying to think of a feature from me- but I can't!
- Phill Price
Agree with Mike, that could do with fixing, Bret. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bret or anyone: Where can you find a list of people you've blocked?
- Myrna
Myrna - Ssshhh - don't speak of such a thing... blocking is an unforgivable sin here!
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
But you know on twitter or fb you can unblock. Someone that I didn't know came on a great discussion about kabbalah and said F**k kabbalah so I blocked him.
- Myrna
Jannnifer: I TOTALLY disagree with you. Blocking on FriendFeed is a very important thing to do to keep your view clear of jerks, spammers, and other people you just don't want interacting with your content. I don't let jerks into my living room and the block feature is how I keep my online living room clean, too.
- Robert Scoble
LOOOOL you better watch out if FF grows too fast, we're gonna be using the block button a LOT
- Myrna
Robert, did you see why I blocked this character. Jerimiah probably would have blocked him from using FF.
- Myrna
@Kol - Looks like FFBlockr is broken/down at the moment...
- Tyson Key
I guess I can see the need for this in some respects, but doubt I'd ever use it. The same way I feel about Blocking......someone would have to be really destructive to get me to do that. I just hope we don't end up with more and more "tools" that stop the natural flow and interaction on FF.
- Bonnie Foster
So Bonnie, would you block a FF stranger who came onto a discussion and said F**k the subject or your discussion?
- Myrna
Bret: I think this feature should let the entry owner to be able to comment without having to re-enable comments (and shutting them down again after that)
- alieb
Myrna....not unless he/she was such a pest that they did this kind of thing all the time.....kept making negative comments, or tried to continually start something. If it was someone who just happened to pop in and make their comment I would chalk it up to them being a jerk, having a bad day, I don't know, maybe just hating that subject. People just aren't going to always agree with everything you say. :)
- Bonnie Foster
Scoble and Krynsky are right, options to turn off comments after 30 days, and a dislike option are needed. Dislikes should be capped at 5 a day though.
- Shawn Kirsch
from BuddyFeed
Bonnie, you mean if I came on one of your threads and just dumped a FU, you would just brush it off? It's negative energy. I don't know about you but I try to keep things positive. Btw, you can disagree and stay positive.
- Myrna
Myrna..not disagreeing that it isn't negative energy, and yes, you can disagree with someone and stay positive. Would I do it, of course not....but everyone is different, and some people are jerks. One FU however, would not crush me, or for that matter, destroy my thread if everyone else was commenting with a positive attitude.
- Bonnie Foster
Just been reading about this over on Techcrunch. Sounds a reasonable idea, although it will be interesting to see how it works out in practice
- George Hall (Australia)
Ok I understand the need to stopping comment when the Mob starts forming, you know the tar and feather, pitchfork and everything, that makes some sense. What I don't understand is why you would post an entry if you didn't want any discussion. If you don't want it discussed then don't post it.
- Kim Landwehr
I am a group admin, I post the room guidelines in a thread and close the comments so that I can stick the thread url in the group description and new users will be able to read a short and to the point list instead of a 150+ comments thread. Sounds good, Kim?
- alieb
Ok, alieb that makes sense I was thinking more of a regular post, wasn't thinking of a room guideline situation.
- Kim Landwehr
You're welcom Myrna, i remembered a thread from a while ago with that link in it and just did a few searches until i found it - i can't find anywhere on the help/faq the friendfeed.com/settings/modifications (for your history of subscriptions and blocks as well) also i can't find the imaginary friends feature linked anywhere in the help/faq either (/settings/imaginary) -- private groups...
- Chris Heath
Kim, also - if we had this feature back in march scoble wouldn't have had to butcher his post to stop people from trying to enter a contest that was long over http://friendfeed.com/scoblei... - also this helps with spam as a popular post can be preserved without having to be attended to to fight of spammers who would try to latch to a popular search result
- Chris Heath
Bret, I like the timed idea some, but having the owner always able to comment seems right.
- Chris Heath
Robert, I don't see 'blocking' to be important but then I don't have jerks even trying to get into my living room so have no need. ;-) Been here well over a year and yet to block anyone. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Tyson, darn. Sorry I didn't check it before posting.
- Kol Tregaskes
Keep it comin' Bret. Someone ... PLEASE write a Friendfeed guide before I have to ?! (Although ... I'm still lost in the halls looking for what used to be rooms ?! :)
- Charlie Anzman
I believe they call those Groups now, unless they're renamed in a future iteration.
- Tyson Key
Can we get a feature added to the hide interface to 'Hide all entire with comments disabled'? If you don't want me on your thread, I may not want you in my stream. This is a place of discussion, not a bull horn :)
- Johnny
from iPhone
This is a great idea Johnny and it adds a balance to the whole situation. People who just want to use FF to promote themselves with no discussion could be easily hidden from view this way.
- Gunnybear ™
well then you might as well block them, right?
- Chris Heath
@Johnny Worthington, I am totally right there with ya on that one. Why bother reading something on FF that I can't respond to? Isn't FF for conversation?
- (dot)lizard kelly
But Chris, they may still comment here and may comment on my stuff. Because they don't want interaction on their posts doesn't mean I should rule out the possibility of having interactions with them all together. It's about the scalple, not the sword :)
- Johnny
from iPhone
Arrington won't have to see it on his account everytime he logs in now
- Mark
Because he secretly loves getting attention. Not many people know this about him.
- Mitch
I like this ability, but agree with Johnny W on what he says on not wanting to read what he cannot respond to.
- Rick Cogley
I get your point Johnny, i was kind of joking, but also kinda serious.
- Chris Heath
Robert Scoble: Oh No! I was was being sarcastic and kidding with Myrna about blocking being an unforgivable sin!! I agree 100% with what you said above -----> "Blocking on FriendFeed is a very important thing to do to keep your view clear of jerks, spammers, and other people you just don't want interacting with your content. I don't let jerks into my living room and the block feature is...
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Thanks. I can't imagine ever using it, but thanks all the same.
- Steven Perez
Gosh, I hope Robert Scoble will be able to see my last comment since this thread is so long!
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Interesting, but what about a 'Generate Comments' option for those us that are, shall we say, boring and get little to no activity and want to seem like they are interesting people too. ;->
- Grant Bierman
I fear that this addition will pave the way for more one way transmission. Friendfeed is about sharing and interaction. I might actually have to start using the block funtionality if I start seeing rant or mlm posts.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
If you want to hide comment disabled posts preemptively and user scripts are an option for you, take a look at this script update I released tonight: (only affects you, and only in effect while running the script) http://friendfeed.com/friendf...
- Micah
thanks - to "enable" comments, there is a direct link - to disable... it is necessary to click Edit and select the option... Why? a different design?
- Kishore Balakrishnan
Kishore, having 'enable' as a direct link serves as a visual reminder that you've disabled comments on that item. Plus you wouldn't want 'disable' to be a direct link, as you might click it by accident.
- FFing Enigma
@Matthew - You can disable it, if you're the owner of the post, and at present, it's possible for users to edit their comments after comment freezing, as it's implemented now.
- Tyson Key
A surprisingly controversial move. Good addition, but I can't find myself ever using it.
- Pete D
from iPhone
this feature seems in accordance with existing moderation options available to post owners
- Mike Chelen
