Haha, there should be. I'm not sure if anything could really be symbolic of what we've experienced. I'm going to be so excited to have freedom but also terrified of losing momentum. And I am going to miss my classmates to death. We're kind of a (tenuous, admittedly) little family.

My cousin (with whom I'm not super close) just offered to do something incredibly kind for me and it seriously brought me to tears. I really appreciate everyone who has tried to help me with actions and advice and listening.
Looks like on the fly OCR, properly parsed into contact data. That is win.
- EricaJoy
Richard, it's one possible use of the new Google Goggles product http://www.techcrunch.com/2009.... It recognize the text on visit cards and makes it useful. That's a pretty convincing application of Google's mission IMO.
- Jérôme
I was just thinking how much I would like smartphone OCR.

If you have this installed on your Android phone, for fun go to Amazon and start taking pictures of book covers. Its nuts!
- EricaJoy
Another reason to get an androphone soon, very soon ;-)
- stanjourdan
Erica, the existing Amazon Android app does book covers. And so does the standalone app SnapTell. =)
- Andrew C (✓)
Just DL'ed from Android Market. Doesn't work all the time but very cool!
- Mike Reynolds
Took a picture of a bag of potato chips and got some demon wicca sex blogs. But then took a picture of a coffee table art book that's just a figurative painting on cover and it correctly identified it as a Julian Schnabel book. Definitely entertaining but definitely labs level results.
- Hayes Haugen
Can't see it in the [Canadian] Market. Does it work with Android 1.5?
- Andrew C (✓)
Nope, 1.6 and newer. Turning into a trend.
- Hayes Haugen
Then Rogers *really* needs to get off their asses and release the 1.6 update.
- Andrew C (✓)
Ahhhh.so it's for people with crappy input devices ;-). One day will people have forgotten how to type. It's a good idea. We'll see when they make it available to all platforms.
- Richard A.
If a device hasn't been updated to 1.6 already I don't think it's likely it ever will be. Everyone has their hands full with 2.0.1.
- Hayes Haugen
Ergh, maybe I'll just root the phone then. =P

There is an app called CardReader for the iPhone (3GS or better) that can scan a business card, send it to a server to OCR it, then import that info into a new contact. It works pretty good on standard looking cards, but fails when the cards have a busy background or such.

"What is chorizo? A spicy pork sausage. While the Spanish version is usually spiced with paprika and garlic, Mexican chorizo is spiced with chile peppers. I've seen chorizo served in Mexican restaurants most often as a side sausage, like bacon. We cook ours up with the eggs and add some raisins as well, the sweetness of which provides some balance to the spicy chile in the chorizo."

"I know these aren't fries, but doesn't "hamburger and grilled potato wedges" have a nice ring to it too? I was reflecting on my grilling past and realized that grilled fries—which had been such a staple in my earlier years—had completely fallen out of my repertoire for some time now, and I couldn't come up with any good reason why. They're quick, tasty, and go great with with most meats coming off the flames, so why shouldn't they be part of any regular grilling rotation? Making them couldn't be more simple: wedge a few spuds, brush them with oil and place them over the coals on a two-zone fire until they brown and crisp on all sides. From there, move the fries to the cool side of the grill and cover to finish cooking through, then sprinkle with a nice spice mixture to your liking and they're done."

Love this song, and the video, the part with the ball that they cut open with the light spilling out? yah, I know what that feels like....

Jason, I really like the spin that Justice put on it. Love me some dance-y French pop. I don't know if I've ever seen the video. I'll look it up.

I was told to just make date after date. Anyway, I haven't heard from guy #1 and after thinking about it more, I don't think we'd work. This guy, while not "hot" is so sweet and nice and kind. We just clicked.

Sweet and kind? Dangerous combination

A great combination;) And? He loves theater (he's seen Spring Awakening three times and saw it on Broadway with the original cast), kids, good tv, traveling, etc. And he cooks! Yay!

Yay for generic code! Re-usability rawks!
- Lindsay
wouldn't you not want a destructive piece of code to be reusable? wouldn't you want to code in failsafe procedures to make sure that it's not easy to destroy another city? -- i would hate for the code that i wrote to be used in a way that i didn't approve of
- Chris Heath
if you ask me, I'm not coder already for years - I'm QA and try to make _them_ to raise the quality of written.
- A. T.
@Chris - Don't worry about it... I'm sure that the city is not really destroyed.. internally the method just sets a flag that disables it from being accessed and shunts the records to an archival database for the long term in the case it might need to be restored. ;)

On Saturday night we got tasty coffee at the Pioneer Roasting Company in Cle Elum WA and they do a little heart in your foamy creme when you get a latte. Definitely recommend going there if you are ever in the area.
In case you didn't know... when Joey was born, they had to raise the bar for measuring awesomeness. She's like the Tiger Woods of Kick Ass... That is all - http://www.flickr.com/photos...
It puts things into perspective for me. I liked the quote which frames the phenomenon thusly: "This is also why people think of certain beaches or museums or airports as usually busier than they actually are: by definition, most people aren't there when they're less crowded." So the sense that you may have about how busy a place is, is an illusion simply because you're more likely to be there when it's busy. Likewise you're more likely to be friends with people who have lots of friends then you are with people who have few friends.
- veo
most of my friends moved away for new jobs or died. i have ONE left in this city. apart from that, it's all people my wife knows...and she didn't live here before 1998. :P

- Lis
Y'all can hate, but I wouldn't support my kid in that. Still love him, yes. Support, no.
- Jenthemum
No hatred intended, Jenthemum, but it's that kind of lack of support that led me to attempt to take my life. Love, notwithstanding.

Out of sight, and out of mind. I've been gay for three decades. This isn't my first rodeo.
- Derrick
I imagine that that kind of love isn't much comfort when you know that your mother doesn't approve of your life or anyone who might mean the world to you, Jen.
- Yolanda
If it helps at all, I wouldn't support my kid shacking up with anyone, either, regardless of gender.

His name is "Delany". I always add the extra 'e' to his name too. His most recent book, Dark Reflections, is about a gay author living in ... New York, I think. Not SF, very good. It was a Lambda Literary Award nominee in 2007.

Several years ago, I was on an AIDS fund-raising marathon-training-run through a park that that day had become the campground for a large number of black families who were in town for the Gay Pride parade. The young black woman I was running with that day was very surprised to see them. She said she didn't know there were black gay people. She thought gay people were all white. [!!!!!]

Just wanted to say that you guys are the best. I couldn't have imagined a better crowd. To D's point, why would a black man "choose" to be gay given the climate in this country?

We have for many years been busily engaged in a grand project of Americanizing the world’s understanding of mental health and illness. We may indeed be far along in homogenizing the way the world goes mad.

Mental illnesses have never been the same the world over (either in prevalence or in form) but are inevitably sparked and shaped by the ethos of particular times and places. In some Southeast Asian cultures, men have been known to experience what is called amok, an episode of murderous rage followed by amnesia; men in the region also suffer from koro, which is characterized by the...

“We might think of the culture as possessing a ‘symptom repertoire’ — a range of physical symptoms available to the unconscious mind for the physical expression of psychological conflict,” Edward Shorter, a medical historian at the University of Toronto, wrote in his book “Paralysis: The Rise and Fall of a ‘Hysterical’ Symptom.” “In some epochs, convulsions, the sudden inability to...

For more than a generation now, we in the West have aggressively spread our modern knowledge of mental illness around the world. We have done this in the name of science, believing that our approaches reveal the biological basis of psychic suffering and dispel prescientific myths and harmful stigma. There is now good evidence to suggest that in the process of teaching the rest of the...

NOWHERE ARE THE limitations of Western ideas and treatments more evident than in the case of schizophrenia. Researchers have long sought to understand what may be the most perplexing finding in the cross-cultural study of mental illness: people with schizophrenia in developing countries appear to fare better over time than those living in industrialized nations.

This was the startling result of three large international studies carried out by the World Health Organization over the course of 30 years, starting in the early 1970s. The research showed that patients outside the United States and Europe had significantly lower relapse rates — as much as two-thirds lower in one follow-up study.

Many traditional cultures regard the self in different terms — as inseparable from your role in your kinship group, intertwined with the story of your ancestry and permeable to the spirit world. What McGruder found in Zanzibar was that families often drew strength from this more connected and less isolating idea of human nature. Their ability to maintain a low level of expressed emotion...

The ideas we export often have at their heart a particularly American brand of hyperintrospection — a penchant for “psychologizing” daily existence. These ideas remain deeply influenced by the Cartesian split between the mind and the body, the Freudian duality between the conscious and unconscious, as well as the many self-help philosophies and schools of therapy that have encouraged...

Offering the latest Western mental-health theories, treatments and categories in an attempt to ameliorate the psychological stress sparked by modernization and globalization is not a solution; it may be part of the problem. When we undermine local conceptions of the self and modes of healing, we may be speeding along the disorienting changes that are at the very heart of much of the world’s mental distress.

Have you ever tried baking your grilled cheese? Works like a charm for making multiple sandwiches for a group all at once. 475 - 5 minutes per side.
- veo
This is what I do: buy a bunch of fresh loafs and place in freezer. Whenever you feel like grilled cheese, place cheese on frozen bread and into the oven - like @veo says, 5 minutes would do. toaster oven also works. this way you can nice quickie grilled cheese in no time. Alternatively you can also use a panini grill but i like using oven to do batches as veo says :) I freeze the bread because they will always be fresh - plus it won't be burnt if you want really melted cheese :)

@See-Ming Lee - I had never thought about freezing the bread before baking but I like the idea. :)
