At first I thought this said "Five Reasons FriendFeed is Better Than Drugs."
- Dave Winer
no-- I still prefer Digg for my 'news' (ie time-wasting) (... and lol @dave winer)
- john conroy
Comments are much better here. Much less "Apple is teh awesomes!", "OMG! Ubuntu is so amazing, even though I use Windows 95", "Ron Paul is amazing", "Religion is pointless" etc
- Rich
If this was on Digg it would be top 101 reasons, 6 pages of ads on a blog copied from somewhere else. Way to condense! Seriously surprised though, ONLY 5?
- Andrew Smith
i still use digg as well. in one shot i can see top 10 popular news, FF i can't. it is cluttered for a one shot look (even with the "show best of")
- Chris Harris
Haven't logged in in months. Which is why I don't import my account. I'd add the 6th reasons: the comments system is better here.
- Roberto Bonini
i think part of the reason is the community... digg was invaded by internauts and 4channers. friendfeed makes more sense because u better control what gets to you. and the comments are usually (for now?) from a relatively informed circle
- Ruben Llibre
@Ruben - " digg was invaded by internauts and 4channers" - yep! which is why Digg is worthless
- Enrique Gutierrez
from twhirl
I only go to Digg if I see an interesting Digg post in FriendFeed or if one of my FF buddies sends me a shout.
- Susan Beebe
The idiots and spammers will find their way here eventually.
- Greg Beck
I agree. I like that I can follow people I know and trust and get my news or happenings here - more relevant for me. When something or someone isn't relevant for my tastes, I can hide them. On Digg, getting whatever the popular diggers like on the front page doesn't appeal to me anymore. I admit that it used to, but that was when I was new to social networking and wanted to find out what was going on. I'm liking and using FriendFeed more these days. I may digg something I like once every month or two.
- Liana Lehua
If only everyone on Twitter didn't think this meant every Apple store. U.S. Apple store is still up. This pretty much solidifies the 3G iPhone announcement.
- Brandon Titus
Seriously.... I wish Apple would just live video stream these things...
- James Cook
I have been online for the last eight hours and it's really starting to pick up now!
- Joe Dawson
I feel bad for all the people wanting to buy an ipod connector or power supply etc. and can't because an online store has to be taken “down” for updates. I remember laughing at Walmart when they did this. We should be laughing at Apple too.
- Amit Patel
I'm not .. it's going to make for a really boring news day .. bets are that Techmeme will be running 90% Apple nonsense with the rest regulated to bottom section of the page
- Steven Hodson
I'm with Steven. You could make the argument I'm an Apple nut, but I'm not excited about SteveNotes the way I used to be. What am I supposed to do? Upgrade at every product rev?
- Louis Gray
I think it's the lack of new and exciting things Apple could produce or have in its back pocket, or rather the lack of the imagination of people who follow the keynotes. A few years back, there was a possible iPhone, video iPod, iTablet, switch off of PowerPC... now, out of that list, the only one left is the tablet. So what fills the void? OH GOD NEW VERSION OF X PRODUCT YES. Not very compelling.
- Mark Trapp
@Louis - <GASP> you mean you don't wait breathless with wallet in hand on His Jobness's word? ........ :)
- Steven Hodson
I'm excited, but I"M GETTING AN IPHONE. WHEE! Sorry... what were we talking about?
- Cyndy
While I was underwhelmed by MacWorld, I have high hopes for WWDC after Apple's roadmap event a few months ago. Quite frankly I think I'm more excited for the 2.0 software than the 3G iPhone itself - can't wait to see what developers come up with for it. I just think that while it is overhyped (like all things Apple), this really could down as one of those times where sometime transformative was unveiled.
- MG Siegler
I'm with Cyndy. I'm dumbly excited for one reason only - new phone for me!! So if it turns out we're all suckers and he's introducing a new Macbook instead, or other such nonsense, I'll be crying into my pillow all week long.
- Carla Thompson
I am with Gabe of Techmeme. He says iPhone will be top news UNLESS something more interesting happens.
- Robert Scoble
I agree Robert. Tomorrow, Techmeme will be Jobsmeme
- Bwana ☠
It would be pretty sweet if Microsoft could figure out a way to buy Yahoo before 10am! ;-)
- Robert Seidman
I just hope I can buy a new iPhone, and have them drop the price a few hundred dollars the second I'm handed my receipt.
- shaun mclane
@Robert as interesting as that might be I still think that just because it is Steve Jobs and given the preponerance of Mac users in the Web 2.0 sphere the Apple news would win out :)
- Steven Hodson
It's ok to be excited but still set lower expectations. New Apple shiny will be a pleasant departure from current tech news...
- Bwana ☠
I'm also looking forward to the iPhone 2.0 firmware update more than the new iPhone. Once the firmware is released, we'll finally be able to see the full power of this mobile version of OS X. RIM and MS will once again be chasing Jobs and company.
- James
from fftogo
I love Apple products but I am really tired of the Apple hype. Apple has bloggers and the news media by their short hairs.
- Alex Williams
"Google invited members of the press to its main campus in Mountain View today to unveil Gmail Labs. Gmail Labs is essentially a stage for Google employees to develop new features for Gmail under the public eye. Starting at 6pm PT tonight, all Gmail users in the US and UK will see a new tab in the settings area called “Labs”. The tab will show a selection of beta features, such as “Pictures in Chat”, which (unsurprisingly) puts portraits in chat sessions, and “Mouse Gestures”, which allows you to navigate Gmail using mouse gestures."
- edythe
Hmm...wonder if Canadians get to sneak in there too...not seeing a tab on my GMail yet though. Anyone see it yet (Canadian or no)?
- Trent Olson
@Trent: yeah, not seeing it in mine yet. perhaps they are running behind.
- edythe
the Quicklinks and Superstars look useful - not sure about the rest. Still waiting for them to activate this...
- Frederic
Pretty cool, but looking I don't see a single thing I would use. Why not focus on things that people have obviously wanted by duplicating the "Better Gmail" scripts from Lifehacker? And just because I have a place to mention it... why have an Atom feed for my Gmail that I can't even use in gReader - or seemingly anywhere else for that matter?
- Vince DeGeorge
my tab is there now...at 2:05 am central, and in Canada (though we Canadians hate to be lumped in with Americans most of the time, this is one of those times I'm glad you Americans think of us as your 51st state)!
- Trent Olson
Great idea - and when they open it up wider than their own engineers, people will build on it like a platform
- Scott Davies
Reminds me of that line in Snatch when someone went missing,"Not like it's a set of car keys or pack of cigarettes. What do you mean it's missing?"
- Mark Forman
Where in the world is the Twitter database? Is there a reward for it's return?
- Michael McGimpsey
from twhirl
@MM yeah the reward is good karma at Plurk :D
- Mark Forman
I think I saw it floating down the street here in Minnesota. Oh Wait that was my server I'm being told. Hey wait come back here I didn't say you could float away server.
- David Newberger
from twhirl
twitter is f**kin useless. i'm at the media reform conference. trying to connect with folks. have no one's mobile. just twitter. with track broken, i can't listen in on parallel conversations. i almost wish i'd never had twitter. the loss is worse
Contact lists benefit from LOTS of contact information; email, phone, IM, snailmail, etc. Personally, mine is mostly email and phone. What's the primary mode of communication in other peoples' contact lists?
- Brent Newhall
Mostly email and IM, but increasingly Twitter. Damn!
- David Sim
Rafe, i love your shut it down post. it's like being inside a building WHILE it's being remodeled, and bulldozed and plaster is falling on your head. it's a headache and a hazard. argh.
- @baratunde
For me the "secret sauce" for twitter is that while I can choose how I want to interact with it, my contacts can also choose how they want to, and I don't have to select. So while I make (selective) use of SMS, many others don't & won't and I don't have to know that for them to get my messages. Plus w/track (and esp. re an event) I can also quickly discover others following the same event and selectively choose who to engage with (if anyone)
- Shannon Clark
yes, but in my case it's a best of Scoble
- Duncan Riley
mine, at least for today, is definitely a best-of popular bloggers
- MG Siegler
Duncan: interesting. I see other stuff on my best of page. I definitely like the same kind of stuff that you do, though. So that probably is why that's what you see.
- Robert Scoble
Best of Scoble, Louis Gray, and FriendFeed employees. Something to be said though about what the people i follow find interesting.
- Eric Kerr
i'm now included twice in my own top 4 best of the day, something which i'm really proud of.
- MG Siegler
@duncan - I'm seeing a good mix of my friends - some Scoble, but he doesn't dominate the list by a long shot.
- Frederic
I love the new feature, and your coverage of it was excellent
- Gavin
I don't understand all the discussion is about Firefox 3. I use it on MacOS and Linux and would never go back to Firefox 2. Especially the speed improvements on MacOS are amazing. It's also not a problem to get the most extensions working with some hackery.
- Benjamin Kohler
Definitely much peppier looking good.Just tried with Adobe Buzzword flash loaded much quicker than on FF 2.0 I'm sold. Now just need hack for Google tool bar.
- Mark Forman
huh. wow. on the other hand, it's not officially out yet.
- edythe
I can't get away from the bliss that I find with Safari 3.1.1 - I've given the RC2 a chance, but it's little things like the tab organisation that sells me on S3
- Giovanni Ghignone
Firefox 3 is great... and a huge improvement on FF 2, but it's still a bit of a bind waiting for all your favourite add-ons to be compatible. Some of them can be deal-breakers... maybe that's what MA and SG are waiting for?
- Calvin Jones
from twhirl
I gave FF3 a look, but it's missing support for a couple of plugins that I use regularly.
- Richard Peat
from twhirl
My main problem with FF (both 2 and 3) on the Mac is that it doesn't use the keychain. I can switch freely between Camino and Safari, and both are able to use my keychain entries. Firefox however, has its own password manager. So I'm probably going to have to wait for FF 4 before this feature is implemented.
- Paul Grav
i need the google toolbar. then i will jump to ff3.0
- Rodney Rumford
Once Google Browser Sync or an equivalent works for FF3 I will switch
- David McDonald
Im with David McD on this one. I LOOOVEEE Google Browser Sync, especially when I have to be on multiple computers all day.
- Colby Olson
After I upgraded to FF3 RC, I could keep the browser open for over 3 days without chewing up all of my RAM. I just LOVE it.
- Leon Ho
Removing and restricting existing functionality for no rational reason and despite objections is what has been going on in FF3 for a while. Killing things such as the "temporarily trust" button on the self-signed certificate warning popup, or the go-button quasi-removal, with no option to bring it back, or with the obligatory awesomebar. It seems to say - "yes, we know that you want it,...
- Andrey Andreev
@David Owens 1Password has its own problem. 1Password uses its own keychain, so if at some point you decide to stop using 1Password, you're going to have to migrate all your passwords back to OS X's default login keychain (the one used by Camino and Safari). Unfortunately this isn't a trivial task.
- Paul Grav
Like many others, I'm waiting for some extensions to become compatible. I'd prefer not to lose features with an upgrade.
- Aaron B. Hockley
We definitely want feedback. I literally had six versions of the algorithm running in parallel, and this is the best one according to our qualitative assessment, but we need more data to really improve it. Let me know if you see too much of something or missed something you think is important - it will help me debug quality issues.
- Bret Taylor
@scobleizer: It also does a bit of what you want for individual services as well. Here are the best Twitters from the past day: http://friendfeed.com/summary.... Click the service icons to restrict the "best of" view to a single service. It doesn't let you send the link out to anyone since it is entirely personalized, nor is it the generalized search interface you described, but it is a step in that direction.
- Bret Taylor
Also looks like the date can go from 1 thru 30. greater than 30 reverts to 30
- Atul Arora
Bret: that's very cool. It's amazing how few things I actually have missed. But, this will be useful to check in on. One thing I do wish it had was "big things since last time you were here."
- Robert Scoble
Next? I'd love to have a way to see a true reverse-chronological view of the "Everyone" feed, but let me filter by "n" Likes and "n" Comments.
- Robert Scoble
How about, do a time stamp of the last time Robert logged in, and every hour afterward, do a screen capture of every single update from everybody he follows, save it as a massive PDF file, and send it to him via e-mail attachment. Repeat every 60 minutes.
- Louis Gray
perfect! now i only need to convince most of my friends to update their webbrowse behavior. most of them still didnt make the jump too rss and sharing is done mostly by skype :(
- Chris Hofmann
Great addition. I'd also like to see it applicable at the individual user level.
- Mark Krynsky
Been really looking forward to this since seeing it mentioned on "The Dan Farber Show"! In typical FF style, great feature with simple, clear implementation. Yummy!
- Matt Harwood
This is very cool. As soon as they provide an Atom feed of this, it'll be the most kickass service ever.
- Eric Florenzano
hmmm, this is my top post. Nice one
- Andrew Smith
This is a great addition, shows that they are listening to what people want!
- Joe Dawson
Very nice feature, for me, given the addiction, I suspect the "day" one will be the most used to make sure I didn't miss anything good. :)
- felix
Bret: Yeah!! Great feature!! I've been waiting for this one! woo hoo! :)
- Susan Beebe
Feedback: 1-day, 3-day, and 7-day look pretty good. 14-day and 30-day summaries seem swamped by the last 7 days (Maybe searches in 10-30-days should have older items weighted heavier than in 1-3-7 day summaries). Awesome! This really helps with the "Page 11" (Search past #300-399 fails design). My Friends feed (of 149 people) only goes back about 4 hrs. Everything past that is lost... Wish my regular Friends feed would save 24+ hrs. Nice job Bret!
- Mitchell Tsai
ooh, what's this? ok, same thing I already talked about. awesome!
- Kamilah Gill
Bret, you are an absolute genius. Every time I hear you speak (or write) I am just more and more impressed.
- Alex Hammer
Search by service for Top 100 YouTube pictures, Blog articles, Google Reader/Del.icio.us articles, Last.fm songs... We can search for "&service=picasa&num=100", "&service=flickr", "&service=blog", "&service=googlereader","&service=delicious" See http://friendfeed.com/e... for multiple Top 100 searches from the past 1-2-3-7-14-30 days.
- Mitchell Tsai
Hmm.. And this is the first item in my personalized recommendations? I guess it works :)
- Dimitri Glazkov
What's very VERY cool is that service filters work with this as well http://friendfeed.com/e.... EDIT: I just saw Mitchell already posted this feature. I should have known, he's always on top of these things :)
- Bwana ☠
Nice, that was the thing to do. I hope to get something like that for Twitter and I think it's still possible to make.
- fbrunel
I bet FF hires Mitchell to code up queries!! LOL good stuff here Bret & Mitchell!!
- Susan Beebe
@Bret: I'm sad you don't support APML.
- directeur
Susan: I'm just too lazy (and retired May 2007). Now I code in Excel & FriendFeed (rather than Fortran 66 & Cobol). I just bookmark my own FriendFeed posts in Safari & Firefox rather than make too many Safari bookmark-sub-menus. Getting too lazy to write HTML or LAMP. ;-) Headed to Yosemite in a few days after the Harmony Festival this weekend - Robert Scoble's Ansel Adams visit was too tempting :0)
- Mitchell Tsai
Awaiting for more kick-ass features from FF! Great work!
- Winston Teo
This is great Bret. FF keeps getting better.
- Michael Carter
Hmmm. If the list of most popular posts contains only posts which I have liked, commented on or clicked through, does that make me the most popular friendfeeder ever? ;-)
- Slippy "Threadsbane" Lane
Are there plans to extend "best of" to FF rooms? Depending on the number of members and activity, that could be really interesting.
- Tom Landini
This is so incredibly awesome. FriendFeed just returned to the same level of utility (for my usage patterns) as before the launch / noise onslaught. :-)
- Kevin Scott
awesome, thats useful! now i need direct messages, go one
- Alexander Oelling
I find it interesting on how this feature is at the top of "best of the month." Seems kinda pointless.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Finally back on a full computer after a nearly two-week absence (no, I didn't go to Peru, I went to Alabama). Looks nice.
- Ontario Emperor
Great addition! Next feature request: let me filter by people I really know vs. people I just like to follow so I can see what my "real" friends are doing at a glance.
- Dave Hanson
Exactly, superstars and quicklinks are the keys, both with be very useful to me (though more if you could sort superstars) - but I also really like the idea of 'take a break'
- MG Siegler
MG - you can sort the superstars - just drag and drop them around in the General tab (or did you mean sort messages by stars? That would really be useful!)
- Frederic
