Absolutely, it's totally irresponsible to stick to our ideals as a nation of laws. We should just shoot the guy and toss him in a pit. Or better yet, let the Egyptians do it for us.
- Alfredo Padilla
Two more 1 terabyte hard drives just showed up from Amazon.com. My four drobos are getting very hungry these days now that I'm shooting everything at 21 megapixels in RAW.
Is it for backup or just unprocessed photos?
- Håkan Dahlström
4 Drobos??? And I was so proud of just getting my first one... ;-p
- ronin
mostly for unprocessed photos. 800 photos that I took at the Cal Academy of Science of Friday = 23.8GB. It's amazing how big files are at 21mp in RAW.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas, you know the 1.5Ts are available now, right? Always room to grow. :-)
- Kevin Fox
I've been on the fence about getting a Drobo for a while now. The question that is keeping me from pulling the trigger is - what happens when the Drobo itself fails? I've heard their support is very poor, and I don't like the idea of dropping another $500 to regain access to my files.
- Andy Roth
How much heat do those babies generate?
- Phil Glockner
haha, yeah 1.5Ts look good, but are they more economical? The Seagate 1TB drives were $106 per drive.
- Thomas Hawk
thomas - I, too, have considered Drobo or similar solutions, but of course worry about single point of failure, especially one house. do you do any off-site mirroring?
- Anthony Citrano
Kevin: but how noisy and how reliable?
- Richard A.
Hey Thomas. Do you have the original DROBO or the newer hardware model? I'm curious because I thought the older one couldn't handle drives larger than 1TB. I may be wrong though.
- Dylan Parker
hmmmm, may have to look at those 1.5tb's next time. @Anthony. Right now I'm not mirroring 100% of my RAW library offsite. I probably should be and hope to in the future. My most important images though are mirrored off site. Additionally I publish all of my finished photos in full size format to both Flickr and Zooomr and theoretically at least could go back to either of those two sites if need be.
- Thomas Hawk
Dylan, you might be right on that. I think that is correct. I've got 3 of the old ones and one of the new ones.
- Thomas Hawk
wow, you're gonna need a server farm soon! :)
- Susan Beebe
Jeez. 21 megapixels? I just upgraded from 6.x to 12.x with 14-bit color and was shocked that the total photo count on my 2gb SD card went from 350+ to 75.
- Akiva
yeah, it's a pain in the ass working with 2 8GB and 1 4GB card. I've got another 16GB card coming in the mail which should help I think. The files do feel a lot bigger than I thought they would.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas, I fit about 560-ish photos if I recall on the 16GB card and a 5DM2.
- Ryan
Rachel and I have been shooting on 16gig CFs for a while and they're great. just over 1,000 raw photos per card, though that's on the D700, so that 'only' 12 megapixels, and image sizes from 10-16 megs per.
- Kevin Fox
As crazy as it sounds, one of the reasons I opted for the Nikon D700 over the Canon 5d MKII was the crazy file sizes. I didnt' want to have to suffer through the resulting pain of storage from CF cards to backup.
- Trevin
You think 21 megapixels is a lot? Silly Thomas. Try medium format film scans. :P
- Wirehead
Wirehead, I'd go broke if I went out and shot 800 medium format film shots and printed them. :) You're right though. Film is pretty cool to work with.
- Thomas Hawk
@Thomas - I know you're planning on technology making all the photos easier to post-process, and the data easier to keep. I absolutely agree with that, but man, that 21mpx is gonna set ya back in the meantime!
- Blake Caldwell
Well, it's simple. Only take good shots. And in your case, shoot Fomapan 400 (can be purchased for under $2/roll) and develop it yourself in the bathroom. :)
- Wirehead
Looks like the first 2 terabyte HDs are being released by Western Digital tomorrow. Street price looks to be around $250. So says Engadget, who noticed they came out this evening in Australia. So yeah, the price point isn't there yet, but the march goes on. http://www.engadget.com/2009...
- Kevin Fox
One feature Friendfeed is missing that would REALLY help people to like FF more, is customized home page settings, kinda like Twitter, so people can give a little personal flare to their FF accounts. If we could upload a photo background, or change the colors, etc. it would make it a lot more homey.
If using firefox, you should check out the available greasemonkey scrips. Will update with a link when I'm not on iPhone
- Justin Korn
i was just thinking this. i'm making biz cards for the new media expo and thought it would be best to just put a friendfeed link on it and let people go from there. then i thought about what friendfeed looked like and wished for a customizable home page.
- Anika
men - not as useful as friend scraping addin and imaginary friending , or de-duplicating, or flowing likes back to the service in question
- Phill Price
@phil, you are right not as important. But you might be surprised at how much it will do to make people want to come back to a place they feel comfortable. I still think the user interface here is awesome but the site design is clunky and doesn't feel good.
- Andrew Baron
I would like to have some sticky tabs open every time I visit FF.
- Benedikt Koehler
Oh no, please not! FriendFeed is so clean and tidy and I want it to stay like that. It's really focussing on the news and the conversation about it. why do we need different background colours or pictures for that?
- Matthias Schwenk
@matthias I was ganna say, for the nay sayers, you could have an override button so you could see FF rendered in the <default> style. To answer your question, there is no one answer to design. In a social network, people have different aesthetic opinions and thats okay.
- Andrew Baron
Please no! The great thing about FF is that it doesn't look as terrible as MySpace. It's clean and simple.
- Ernie Oporto
Oh god, please no. All of that is just a slippery slope to Myspace hell.
- Alfredo Padilla
I like this idea, make it nice and simple..no MySpace spammy crap. I think we really do need a landing / profile page for each user.
- Susan Beebe
I like this, would welcome it, and much more, but I seriously doubt they'd do it. They aren't trying to be Twitter.
- Dave Winer
@Andrew I agree with you, you should be able choose either the <default> or your customized page. Myself I like the clean and tidy interface but social networkers on FF should have a choice.
- Jack Wilson, K4SAC
the other thing I would like to see on friend feed is the ability to list all you networks on it and still use ping
- Richard Kannegieser
from twhirl
I seldom go to individual's feeds anyways. Just let it flow
- Nicholas Molnar
Nicholas: Same here, but if I do *want* to see what that person is about, then it would be nice to have a profile to view.
- Susan Beebe
I am against the home page customization, but for the profile info.
- Tim Hoeck
Is it that sad? The guy was productive but also a freaking cry baby every year around the trade deadline. Saying that Boston didn't deserve him? Puhleeze!! Diva be gone! They got a productive bat to replace him that wont cause a shitstorm, so they can focus on playing ball again. The next diva that needs to be dealt with... Brett Favre. Ugh.
- Louie
Kind of like when the Sixers traded my beloved Charles Barkley
- john coffey
As a Yankee Fan, I can't help but be happy. Jason Bay may end up being a good player - but Manny was SCARY in clutch situations....
- George Smith
As a Rays fan, we'd like to have Jason Bay in our lineup. But I think the Red Sox are easier to beat with Bay and without Manny. Check the standings... the Rays are 3 games ahead of the Sox, and 4 games ahead of the Yankees. The Rays have today of, but tomorrow is August 1, and the Rays lead the AL East. Get used to it, Red Sox Nation. The Rays are young, loaded, and they're learning how to win the division. :)
- Bill Sodeman
see now if apple cared, they would have made the battery exchangable - then you could buy 2 batteries and always be ready to swap - that's what i did with my phone for when im on the train and stuff
It's at moments like this when I whip out Doc Searls' explanation of Steve Jobs' art written in 1997 and still 100 percent current today. http://www.scripting.com/davenet...
- Dave Winer
So let me apply it to the question you asked. It's not a phone it's art. You don't need a battery for art, much less a second battery. Shut up and admire it and shut up and did I say shut up? Shut up. Thank you.
- Dave Winer
Just use an external charger with AA batteries. You can get them from RS or Griffin. I use this one on trips all the time: http://bit.ly/4ARRCD
- Cartwright Reed
if apple cared, they would give a universal charger set with the iphone
- Varun Shenoy
True. I bet I'll need to carry one of those for my iPhone (Allen is refering to fact that I have a big huge external battery for my Nokia N95 so I can film for hours without it going down).
- Robert Scoble
check out wirelessinfo.com, we'll have comprehensive battery tests up soon
- Alfredo Padilla
@Scoble well when I have the money to buy three phones, much less the plans oh and the pockets to carry all that, that will be my solution
- Justin Yost
I thought I would be able to ditch my BB after hooking up Exchange support on the new iPhone. My BB could go for days without needing a charge, If I looked closely, I could probably see the battery gauge on the iPhone draining while I was in Google Maps tracking my movement in my car.
- oregon_tony
debating not having my twitter in FF -- but I love the added conversation element. I don't think I twitter that frequently that it's a problem on here, but let me know what your opinion is. after all, you're the ones that have to read it!
keep it on. cross platform promotion doesn't hurt.
- Don Martelli
from twhirl
It's conversational cross-pollination, and I think it works. Let it bloom. People can reply here back to Twitter, so you're letting friends and followers choose the method that works best for them with minimal noise and maximum informational/conversational opportunity. IMO, start worrying when you Pownce and Twitter a blog entry that you're auto-feeding to FF, and all three show up here. Then folks might get annoyed. ;)
- Kevin Hessel
Leave it. If people don't like it, they can hide it. That's the beauty of FF!
- Paul Reynolds
It's easy enough for people to filter out if they don't want to see it. If you remove your Twitter feed from FF, then you end up with these weird conversation silos.
- Pete Brown
I removed mine awhile ago via slusher scenario - my friendfeeds go "to" twitter via twitterfeed instead - so depends on your level of original tweets to ff's - agreed with paul, hide works fine here
- mike "glemak" dunn
I think you should keep it :) The key here is 'interaction' ..
- Saad Kamal
Definitely keep it. Leave it up to the users whether they want to see it or not. Less is not more... MORE is more! ;)
- StephenTorrence
Veronica - My solution some time back was to hide Twitter on FF. You then get a 'refresh page to see hidden items' at the bottom which you can view as often as you want. My stream here is much cleaner now and I do use it more than a few times a day. (Fun show yesterday :)
- Charlie Anzman
Please keep Twitter in your FF. People can hide your Twitter (or all of Twitter) if they want to. I, for one, would like to still see your messages on Twitter.
- Robert Fischer
I would say keep it, several conversations can start with a simple answer to the question 'What are you doing?'. Not all the while is one in the mood to 'share something' or has something worthwhile sharing.
- Parth Awasthi
I asked the same question recently-- should I yank Twitter? People just said" why?" It's just that some Tweets stand out as irrelevant in FF context. But people can always hide feeds on their end I guess. I'm keeping Twitter in,by that reasoning you should too
- Doug Haslam
from twhirl
I'd definitely rather have your twitters here. I barely use twitter anymore, mainly just for the folks who won't or haven't moved to friendfeed.
- Kyle Johnson
Keep it. The crossover and conversation threading makes for amusing reading. What else am I going to do at work?
- Keith Smith
Keep the FF crossover going...you have the option to jump in on the FF discussion - but you won't have the option if you kill it completely....you supply the topics and I'M SURE you'll spawn plenty conversation...good that you're giving this some thought though...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
I say keep it, but just be aware of how conversations are getting fractured all over the net.
- Michael Gaines
i vote to keep it as FriendFeed enables we, the readers, to make the choice to opt out if we aren't interested...
- Jeremy Toeman
Keep it, its easier to follow many people on FF. Conversely I don't follow many people on Twitter as its too hard to keep up. IOW, I only follow you on FF :) and also forgot to pick the send to twitter button, duh
- ThePicMan
cont., I need to turn my phone off at night. Some people twitter at 3;30AM. Who would do that. Wakey, wakey to 27,000 people.Thats like calling everyone in a small city and waking them all up. I learned my lesson.Any other words of caution, now that I've taken the plunge? Damn girl, you are an early riser.
- Michael Fidler
Leave your Twitter in. Your subscribers can hide it if they don't want to see it.
- Morton Fox
the one thing Twitter has it is that it was first before FF in that space. And that brings name recognition to the "masses" and a large inertia that you have to overcome before you can become a true replacement, no matter what technical advantages you bring to the table. I have 5 times more followers in Twitter than FF, and sadly a mass migration doesn't seem to be happening for these folks.
- Daniel Robitaille
Your post to a given site takes on more life when it hits the pages of friendfeed. It's almost like you weigh where you want to "release" a post first knowing that it will get "picked up" by friendfeed.
- todddoubleu
I do not think Twitter will survive as CMS systems that run into message bus systems are the hardest to scale on ruby on rails nd they do not have the money to fight two fronts ruby on rails scalability and new features to stave off competition.
- Fred Grott
good link, allen. some additional default choices would be fantastic. read: better discovery mechanisms. having only members of the echo chamber as default choices makes for a duller feed. no offense to present company. ;)
- Brooks Bayne
I think all this FF > Twitter discourse is seriously, seriously underestimating the power of Twitter's unparalleled portability. It's 100% usable through SMS and has an iPod-esque ecosystem of third party tools and add-ons that hook into it. These things brought Twitter to its throne, and now you guys aren't even factoring them into the equation because of a little downtime.
- David Chartier
i'll post some thoughts on my blog, but one thing that is still annoying is represented in this post... where your friendfeed shows all aggregated iterations of this post here on ff and it just feels silly as i can choose which iteration to leave a comment on. that's an issue. maybe you should turn comments off on the other instances. except that you cannot because its not a feature. also, check out http://friendfeed.com/frendfe... to see some aggregation bugs.
- sull
Jason, that's a brilliant "There Will Be Blood" reference. And so true. I'm afraid that Twitter is just a couple of weeks from being bludgeoned with a bowling pin by FF.
- Frank Roche
I think the removal of a character limit would hurt twitter more than help it. Twitter was never meant as a conversation platform. I think keeping it small and simple makes it much easier for people to use. One of it's biggest strengths is that it's a short form messaging service, and to take that away would make it something that isn't twitter.
- Austin Brown
Jason, I fully agree with what you say here.
- Steve Rubel
I love the fact that there is no premium linked with the number of connections you have. In twitter the greater the number of connections, the higher you appear in the "following" list of your follower. That has become a reason of spam, lowering the quality of the twitter network. Plus, FF works.
- delbo
I can see how Twitter is useful for people who post via SMS, but while Im at the computer FF is far more useful and also more fun to use
- Jeff Hoard
from twhirl
I could offer my agreement here on your entry's content, but I'd rather tell you how much I dug the entry's title.
- Donna Mugavero
I'll put it this way, i never used twitter because I'm not part of the technorati community, but I do use Friendfeed because it allows me to bring together all my online content and then share it with the people I want. That alone is enough for FF to beat out Twitter for me.
- Alfredo Padilla
I think one of the things we have missed carries forward or plays forward a Robert Scoble post, see : http://scobleizer.com/2008... ..let me put it in non tech terms as it pertains to start-ups. FOUNDERS MUST PARTICIPATE IN THE COMMUNITIES THAT FROM AROUND THEIR PRODUCTS! When I state founders I mean also the ones building the product.
- Fred Grott
What it comes down to me is *noise*. FriendFeed is just noisy, what with content from all my social media friends all being dumped into one stream with no organization whatsoever. I look at my FF friends page and I can't make any rhyme or reason to what I'm seeing, even with little favicons to identify which service I'm reading from. Twitter, is clean and organized.
- Stephen Lopez
School of ALL CAPS is a little loud... ;-)
- Mitchell Tsai
I think Center Networks (Allen) has an interesting analysis. I'll be curious to see if the high profile FF users are as interested in commenting on other people's feeds as having their own words commented upon. Twitter just seems like a more democratic forum to me. Personally, I don't care if it is down a couple hours a week. FF only supplements it, it is not an adequate replacement. And I like to write more than 140 characters! Still Twitter is my first choice.
- Liz
PS... Because I use the Flock browser, I get all my social media updates right from the Media Bar and People Sidebar, without ever having to open Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, Pownce, Digg, etc... Everything I want is right there at the click of an icon. Flock > FF.
- Stephen Lopez
I wouldn't underestimate twitter's connection through sms. It makes it the first legit mobile social network, and that is significant for mass adoption and use. Most people don't have internet on their phone to use a web app (iPhone Facebook, Tumblr, etc.) or internet (twitpic, friendfeed, etc.) to send email to update or submit to services. But they are very likely to have sms service, and are used to using it.
- Tony
my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard
- Tyler Gillies
I agree to what you say but besides Twitter reliability, its major flaw is really the reply (or conversation) system which is close to be useless. I guess FriendFeed gained a lot of people (at least myself) because of its efficient conversation system.
- fbrunel
Jason, I agree with you a lot of the time but not in this case. I think it would be suicide for Twitter to get into a features arms race with FriendFeed. They would lose that battle. Twitter needs to focus on keeping it simple, getting stable, and becoming a short messaging infrastructure - not a destination.
- Mike Doeff
Mike, I think you're right on. Twitter would do better to solidify its differentiation.
- Clay Newton
Agreed. I have flip flopped a couple of times on which service I prefer, but FriendFeed is clearly in the lead. If they launch a great iPhone app next Friday it could be thing that pushes them over the hump.
- Scott Watermasysk
FF's iPhone web app is fun and all, but a native app could offer a lot more functionality without having to wait for page loads and other clunkiness. I'm hoping for a native app too.
- David Chartier
Twitter has become a victim of the success it created for itself. As Twitter gained popularity it naturally creates a market for competition. Its poor performance allowed FF to grow. Many of Twitters power users have begun to migrate communication, and followers to FF wanted to see what it is all about. Twitter has lost its first movers advantage. I would not have been able to even make this post on Twitter. FF invites conversation and dialogue. Sorry Bezos, you may have made the wrong investment.
- Fred Neil
Agree. Twitter just isn't built for the type of robust sharing and conversations that make FF really interesting. Twitter is like shouting into a canyon, FF is like being at a noisy bar. Sorry, but too many Tweets are just status updates: You're going to Subway for lunch, whoopee! FF gets a lot better when you hide non-commented on Tweets. As for FF enhancements, I'd like a merge function so the same content from various people/feeds are collapsed into one master. That way I can see all comment streams.
- AJ Kohn
Keep in mind that twitter was not initially made for replies, the whole @ sign reply came from users wanting a way to reply and Twitter then started to support the method
- Ray Slakinski
from twhirl
Looks like Twitter has lost the first mover advantage, and now FF has the first mover advantage with its features. Though since Twitter was the first mover in the beginning it still has a bunch of people who are on it and not on other sites and also has a familiar interface and more third party applications that are compatible with it than Twitter does. Favorite thing so far about FF is the new Seesmic feature to reply to a seesmic post from within FF, really killer.
- Andrew Fielding
I'm still one of the few that want's Jaiku to get back in the game! Google is dropping the ball there!!!
- Sullivan
I'd like a heat wave for the midwest so it could dry up the excess water from all the rain and reduce the number of mosquitos. The skeeters are SO bad, they swarm the dog on walks and I can swear they're trying to carry him away.
- Al Degutis
from twhirl
It's not so much that it's way hot as that the humidity makes you feel like you're going to melt.
- Alfredo Padilla
I know you've gone on to bigger and better but damn if I don't wish you were still around to help with the madness this time around too :)
- Alfredo Padilla
