Hell, my kid is "not accepted" at school and he couldn't be any more in the "majority" demographic if he tried (white and male)... once you are targeted you're picked on, no matter what you look like. You have to figure out the best way to stand up for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you. :( No amount of political correctness is going to fix it.

I am liking this because of Lindsay's comment above - "once you are targeted you're picked on, no matter what"... "You have to figure out the best way to stand up for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you." (The most prolific comment I have read here. :)
- Space Cowboy
No one is going to do it for you all the time, that is.

Why is the text in English instead of Dutch?
- Gabe
English b/c in the Netherlands we have many people living from other countries; and almost all Dutch can read English (at least that is my take)

I like the article, especially as so much of what is reported is western centric. I also like the idea of a site that's called 'Arab Crunch'!
- all about everyone

- Ouriel Ohayon

"America's first internet/gaming addiction center is here. It's located in Fall City, Wash., not far from Microsoft's headquarters, and is called reSTART, says TechFlash. The 45-day program at the 6-bed, family-style retreat costs $14,500 and is not covered by insurance."

The number of computers infected by malware designed to steal confidential information such as bank details has risen by 600 per cent compared to the first six months of 2008, "according to research."

"The case you raise, John, is a fascinating case because we always said, “This is not just a small software thing. This is going to be your life. I would love to be able to inherit a Lifestream from my grandparents and see what their lives were really like and there is no reason I shouldn’t leave my Lifestream to my children and my descendants. There’s no reason why these shouldn’t go for centuries or millennia. Or let you immerse yourself in the lives of your forbears, the lives of an earlier time. In such a radically a-historical world as ours, it’s important. But on the other hand, there are cases where I want to suppress the past and it’s important for me that I be able to do that. Certainly it is conceivable. It is doable."

"The Third Object was designed to alienate the family from their television. This pillow-like object hijacked the family television and changed the channel on its own. The family member then had to hug or punch the object to watch uninterrupted television. If they let go of it, it would continue to change channels or turn the power on and off. I was interested in how a foreign object can change family conversation, body language, gestures, and spatial relationship. I wanted to change the relationship the family had with their television set by giving it a personality with behaviors. I put these objects in two separate homes. I found that the family members did not get angry at the object, instead they became angry at each other for not being able to work the device correctly. This is something we did not expect. I was focused on the physical interaction so much that I did not account for the emotional reaction. Collaborative project with Christiane Holzheid."

"Facebook may be the stickiest social network here in the U.S.—but LinkedIn is thought to be the default network for a “professional” profile and job history. So why are more employers using Facebook to do background checks on potential new hires than LinkedIn?"

Like I look for bad reviews for a product first, I would guess employers look for dirt on possible new employees first. There's much more dirt on Facebook.

Ah, thus why I have every thing on my profile set as friends only.
- Wizetux
+1 Wizetux. Anyone who hasn't learned that by now deserves the consequences
- LANjackal
FTA: "... until the network finds a better way for people to segment what info outsiders can see ..." - Huh? FB has more privacy settings than you wave a stick at, and it's easy to be very selective in your sharing.
- LANjackal
Facebook's privacy settings are pretty awesome compared with similar sites - I'd say it's one of the reasons I migrated to it.
- Amy
Amy, +1. in addition to wizetux, that mean your FB friends won't be your next employers. :) ? we know some examples like this >> http://ff.im/6nbdg

"I've been perfecting a very specific efficiency aspect of my workflow: taking notes during Skype calls. I use a Skype-in number as my primary phone number, and -- with permission -- record client calls for future reference. I can't tell you how many times this has come in handy. On long calls, though, going back and finding a specific point where something was mentioned can be a time-consuming hassle. What I wanted was the ability to record a Skype call while taking notes, and to then be able to reference my (abbreviated) notes back to the exact point where they were taken in the conversation."
