"Taylor Pugh has been suspended from pre-kindergarten because he likes his hair a little on the floppy side. The four-year-old sat with a teacher's aide in a suburban Dallas school library Wednesday while his friends played and studied together in a classroom. "They kicked me out that place," said Taylor, who prefers the nickname Tater Tot. "I miss my friends." Taylor's locks — long on the front and sides, covering his earlobes and shirt collar — violate the school district's dress code. He has been punished with in-school suspension since late last month. His parents say the boy plans to eventually cut his hair and donate it to a charity that makes wigs for cancer patients. And they are not happy with the district's rules."

not that jolly old England is much better these days, of course!

If long hair is not distracting on a girl why would it be on a boy?
- Rachel Lea Fox
"The district is known for standing tough on its dress code. Earlier this year, a seventh-grader in the district was sent home for wearing black skinny pants. His parents chose to home-school him."
- Gabe
"Earlier this year, a seventh-grader in the district was sent home for wearing black skinny pants. His parents chose to home-school him." Who would choose to home-school their kid because of that?
- Alex
Maybe it's more that the school district is clearly so unreasonable that the black skinny pants was just the last straw.

Since when did hair become clothing? When I was in elementary school, we were not allowed to wear shorts, even though it was sometimes quite hot and there was no air conditioning. However, girls could wear skirts. One day when I was in 5th grade, about 5-10 6th grade boys brought skirts to school and changed into them. They got into trouble, but mostly because they were parading around...

i should warn my friend in Richardson near Dallas. Her 3-yr old has longer hair than that.

I love your answers, and I wish I had known informed people like you when I was your age. Obviously, it doesn't get easier fielding the questions when you become vegan, but those are still pretty much the same questions you'll get asked, and you already know your answers!
- Becca
"In fact, most vegetarians live a much healthier lifestyle, and you're not very likely to find an overweight one, seeing how we don't eat fat." I think it's established (or perhaps there isn't sufficient evidence) that eating fat doesn't make one fat. I can see how one can be a "vegetarian" and just live on sugar and carbs (while avoiding eating vegetables altogether). All that aside, I applaud you for your thoughtfulness.
- April Buchheit
I must confess that I'm one of those people who exclaim that one is crazy for being a vegetarian (vegan, especially), but I mean it more as a joke.
- April Buchheit
Gabe: That's just from being around you so long.
- Alex
At least I don't have to be the crazy one this time
- Becca
Actually, you do eat fat if you eat, say, avocado or cheese or even tofu. It's actually bad for you to not eat fat. I'm not saying you should eat animal fat though.
- Clare Dibble
I'll say that though Clare. Bacon is delicious!

Five little ducks went out one day, over the hill and far away. Mother duck said, "Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!" But only four little ducks came back...

So there's a part on the very top of the contraption that was spinning considerably quickly. Another thing that struck me as interesting was that there seemed to be wires (or some sort of thin rigid parts) coming down both sides of the rear of the vehicle, down towards the back wheels with some other parts connected to each tire. Each part may have even been rolling right on the tire....

I'm still guessing a Google mapping vehicle, or that of a competitor. Not sure the thing on top has anything to do with wind. It was spinning, but it looks round...

With all the hubbub about Obama's back-to-school speech, I wonder what people would say about JFK's famous line, "Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country" if it were uttered today, by our current president.
I think no matter what Obama says, some people somewhere will find offense.
- April Buchheit
The thing that bugs me is that it doesn't take much to infuriate certain groups of people especially during the current administration. I certainly don't recall people getting their panties in a bunch over stuff GWB has said about kids needing to stay in school or OB/Gyn's not being able to give their love to women (or something along those lines).
- April Buchheit
Obviously it was different people getting upset about Bush, but anyone that high profile will attract a lot of criticism.
- Paul Buchheit
I wrote "If you quit on school – you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country" on my board following the speech. I thought it was the most powerful thing Obama said today to my kids. So many of the inner city children that I teach just give up. It gets too hard. Life is hard! Don't give up. I try to teach that every day - now I have the president's words to guide me.
- Marci Golub
Paul: Yeah, I know, but it just didn't seem like it was getting as much of the limelight as now. I guess maybe it wasn't as sensational? Perhaps, now, certain news outlets/interest groups are fanning the flame?
- April Buchheit
It depends where you get your news. I haven't heard anything about it except from you :)
- Paul Buchheit
Paul: I suppose I should just shut my piehole, then. :P
- April Buchheit
btw, http://news.google.com/ mentions the speech, but I don't see any mention of controversy (not that I've read any of the articles).
- Paul Buchheit
http://memeorandum.com was full of discussion of it yesterday and over the days before. school districts all over the country debated showing it, parents kept their kids home from school, etc. It was a pretty big deal. I don't mean to give you a hard time about it Paul, I was just surprised and am a believer in following the news to some degree.
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
I thought the speech was pretty pointless. He didn't say anything that we haven't been told by our teachers for the past 8 years. (Stay in school. Work hard. Don't give up.) Hardly worth taking out one of our classes for. That's just my opinion, though.
- Alex
You're probably right Marshall. I still have very mixed feelings about the news though -- I think there's a tendency to get caught up in the daily drama and miss the big picture.
- Paul Buchheit
I haven't seen it yet but my wife described it to me and it sounded really good. Made me think all the more about how remarkable it is that we have a President who was raised by a single mother. The way my wife described it sounded like it could have really spoken to some of the kids most at risk of not staying in school.
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
If it causes more people to watch the speech, then perhaps the outrage will work to Obama's favor. All politics aside, I really like what Obama's background says about our country -- I would much rather have a president who came from "nowhere" than one whose father was also president.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul: I agree. That's why I'll be a shoo-in when I run for President. :) Not only did I come from nowhere, I was born in a third world country known for its garbage mountain. -- Ok, I know I don't qualify being that I'm a 'ferner,' but it worked for Obama, right? ;)
- April Buchheit
April, I don't think your kind is allowed to be president.
- Paul Buchheit
April: just get some dinky Pacific Island state to make up a birth certificate for you, and you can be President.
- Gabe
I think that there is a lot more commentary now than 50 years ago, because there are several 24 hour news tv channels, not to mention their websites, and the bazillions of political bloggers. What is interesting is that so many of them focus on the same inane details, like the use of the word "stupidly", where in theory, we could have a much more diverse amount of information on the news. However, it is much easier to simply comment on something than to actually do research.
- Robert Felty
Yesterday morning, I'd say nothing because it's not a good parallel. I'm a bit bummed that schools actually opted out. I'm not an "Obama supporter," but I don't like the anger games. It's unhealthy.
- Jason Nunnelley
The funny thing is that after I filmed this, I put the camera down and put her on her stomach only to have her immediately roll over to her back. I put her back on her stomach and she did it again. It was like she was waiting for me to put the camera away.
- Maggie
I think the cutest thing is when she lifts her legs up like a froggy. :)
- Alex
It's funny that Hazel likes roll over to her back. Spencer does the opposite. We put him down on his back, and he immediately rolls over to his stomach.
- Robert Felty
Rob, Hazel wasn't really fond of tummy-time. And it's only recently that she tolerates more than a few minutes of it at a time. Now, she will spend about 20+ minutes before she gets tired/bored and needs a break.
- Maggie
Maggie - 20 minutes seems great to me. Spencer rarely likes to do any one thing for more than about 20 minutes. The other day he played in his exersaucer for over an hour while I cooked dinner though. I was kind of against them at first, but I am definitely in favor of the exersaucer now. It seems like your baby mobile unit does much the same thing though.
- Robert Felty
That 20 minutes is with me laying on the floor next to her.

"There are millions of insect species known worldwide. Only 1500 or so are reported edible. This post reviews only 5 of those you could eat and how they are cooked throughout the world. Entomophagy (a Greek word which means “insect eating”) is the practice of eating insects as food. While it is quite an ordinary thing in most Eastern cultures, it is considered a taboo in Europe and North America which may seem odd considering how plentiful and protein-packed insects are."

One of the problems here is that they look like the live versions. (I guess this is true for crustaceans as well, and molluscs are limbless and thus harder to sympathize with.) But in the supermarket, beef, pork, chicken (to some extent, as it's sold in N.America without head, feet, or feathers) are pretty far from the living animals.

my friends from Laos had giant bugs like that pic on the left in the TOASTER OVEN! augh!
- Susan Beebe
The photo on the right is a centipede. Insects by definition all have 6 legs. Maybe he meant "arthropods on a stick".
- Gabe
The week before my food in Dalian included the insects in the first picture :) It tastes not bad when you put it in your mouth, but after chewing, the feeling is not so good~I had two....
- K.D.
Eew! I'll have nightmares from this. Especially the centipede.. *Shudder*
- Alex
The insects in the left pic are silkworm chrysalis. I tried them too:-). I don't like them. I also have eaten katydid, but I like the cicadas the best. My mouth waters when I think of grilled cicadas. I had a lot when I was a kid. They are delicious when they are fresh from shell in the early morning.

"I’m implementing a functional graphics library in Bling for C#. Bling supports the creation and composition of expression trees as seemingly normal C# expressions, allowing us to easily compose code in a high level language and then ship the result to the GPU as a vertex or pixel shader. This allows us, among other things, to support a style of programming very similar to how Vertigo is used in Haskell."
