This album, which was recorded live at the National Theater in Tokyo in 1978, finds two Iranian/Persian vocalists, Fatemer Vaezi Parisa (a woman) and Seyyed Noureddin Razavi (a man) singing the words of such famous poets as Sheykh Bahai, Hafez and Jalal al-Din (who also went by the pseudonym of Rumi). Some of the poems embraced by Parisa or Razavi (who perform separately, not as a duo) go back at least 600 and 700 years -- Hafez lived in the 14th century, while al-Din, aka Rumi, was a Sufi Muslim who lived from 1207-1273. Parisa and Razavi are equally expressive and have no problem bringing the time-honored poetry to life. The singers' accompaniment includes Jalal Zolfonoun on the setar (which is Iran's most famous string instrument and should not be confused the Indian sitar), Mohammad Mousavi Shushtari on the ney (a Middle Eastern flute), and Morteza Hajali A'Yan on tombak drums.
