ANNOUNCE: One day workshop - 22nd April 2010 Lancaster - Survey methodology for sensitive questions using randomized response
One-day workshop: Survey methodology for sensitive questions using randomized response Tutors: Prof. Dr. Peter G.M. van der Heijden (Utrecht University and Lancaster University) and Dr. Maarten Cruyff (Utrecht University) Thursday 22 April 2010, 10-5pm Venue: Postgraduate Statistics Centre, Lancaster University To book a place please go to: http://shortcourses.maths.lancs.ac.uk/ ================================================================= It is well-known that, in surveys, questions about sensitive behaviour may not yield truthful responses. This master class will discuss recent developments in the design of randomized response studies and the analysis of randomized response data. For the design a best practice is shown that has been regularly used in the Netherlands, mainly in the context of social benefit fraud. Many statistical tools are currently available for the analysis of randomized response data, such as logistic regression (useful when the sensitive question is the... more... - Bob O'Hara from email

One-day workshop: Population size estimation for difficult to reach populations in demography, official statistics, epidemiology and public health Tutors: Prof. Dr. Peter G.M. van der Heijden (Utrecht University and Lancaster University) and Dr. Maarten Cruyff (Utrecht University) Wednesday 21 April 2010, 10-5pm Venue: Postgraduate Statistics Centre, Lancaster University To book a place please go to: http://shortcourses.maths.lancs.ac.uk/ ================================================================= In public policy there are many areas where the size of a population is of interest but unknown. One can think of populations like the homeless, illegal immigrants, drug addicts, prostitutes, victims of domestic violence and babies with spina bifida as difficult to reach populations. Usually one or more registrations exist that aim to list all the members of the populations of interest, yet these registrations are imperfect and miss part of the population of interest. ANNOUNCE: CAMBRIDGE STATISTICS DISCUSSION GROUP MARCH 30TH TALK DETAILS
THE CAMBRIDGE STATISTICS DISCUSSION GROUP Tuesday 30th March 2010 7:15 for 7:45 The Large Seminar Room, Institute of Public Health, University Forvie Site, Robinson Way, Cambridge CB2 0SR Genetic Epidemiology of Cancer Doug Easton CRUK Genetic Epidemiology Unit Abstract: Common cancers such as breast and prostate cancer cluster in families, consistent with significant variability in susceptibility. Some high risk genes, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, confer high risks of breast and other cancers, but are rare in the population and only explain a small fraction of the familial risk. This talk will refer to evidence from linkage studies and statistical modelling which suggests that susceptibility to these diseases is probably mediated through many genetic loci, each conferring a small risk. Recent genome-wide association studies have been successful in identifying some common variants associated with the risks of breast and prostate cancer, and suggest that many more could be identified.... more... - Bob O'Hara from email
