"@super6 http://www.nytimes.com/2010... ... That is an example where a lack of a basic understanding of evolution caused problems. Basically... 1) RoundUp is used to kill weeds 2) Monsanto, who makes round up, creates a soy been crop that can resist RoundUp so that soy beans can be sprayed with RoundUp with no problem 3) Monsanto claims it's impossible for weeds to evolve to protect them self from RoundUp and slowly gain a monopoly on soy bean seeds that at this point come almost exclusively from Monsanto 4) weeds evolve to protect them self from RoundUp 5) the entire soy bean industry has been exclusively using RoundUp for so long they are now in chaos"

"I seriously do not mean to be a jerk in saying this, but yes it means you are a wuss. I remember reading an 'Iwata Asks' article about how much they play tested it (I think it was in here some where http://us.wii.com/iwata_a... ). They spent a ton of time play testing these games with people in their office that got dizzy and sick very easily to make sure that the game would not cause problems. You are one of the few people I have heard say anything but "this game makes my brain hurt". My guess is that it's just the pain of adjusting to the running around planets thing for your brain. I would recommend that you see if you can tough it out. If this is the ONLY game this has happened with i would think you can get used to it after a little time playing it."

"Being targeted less is a HUGE deal. Hacking depends on malware, malware requires R&D to find and learn how to use vulnerabilities. If windows is targeted more more malware exists to attack it and thus it is a more dangerous system to run in reality. I've seen the same kinds of studies. But they also say that the security holes found on windows are typically more severe and found as 'zero day' as in they are discovered because someone was already exploiting it Finally windows (until vista) has encouraged bad behavior on the part of users and developers. Users should not be running in a mode where they can change core system files. Up until vista this was so normal that developers wrote programs that would not work unless they had those kinds of security rights. If you remember this was something that Norton sued MS about Vista, they would not be permitted to modify the windows kernel any more. This was something that anti-virus software is required to do in order to intercept virus..."

"@EricG Those terrible things from the 70s lead to even more terrible things in the 80s. Disco lead people to make glam rock. At least in the 70s there were musical options for people who did not like Disco, in the 80s everything was glam crap. Seeing polyester and plaid pants lead people to think that neon was a good color choice. The bad ideas of the 70s permitted the 80s to make even worse decisions. Additionally the bad ideas of the 90s were mostly an over zealous snap back to the bad ideas of the 80s. Grunge was because people were sick of glam, both musically (now everyone sounded like the guy from creed and cut out the shitty synth) and fashion wise (everyone dressed like they were homeless)"

"Do you honestly think that we humans are the first animals on the planet to have emotions? Emotions such as love, hate and sadness exist to hold us together so that we protect each other and work as a group. In terms of evolution working as a group is a huge advantage. Emotions do not exist because we are self aware but despite it."

"It's HUGE BS. The theory at the moment is that Fructose is the main problem and cause of weight gain. Fructose has the same amount of energy as Glucose but can not be used by every cell in the body. There for Fructose must be processed in the liver and stored as fat. This also causes Fructose to bypass the 'i'm full' feeling that Glucose causes. Common sugar is half Fructose and half Glucose so it will make you fat and, if you really over do it, sick. HFCS has more Fructose then common table sugar so it will make you fatter and sicker quicker. see this video http://www.youtube.com/watch..."

"To me it seems like there are a good number of Rs who want to help but they are stuck in group think. None of them have the guts to be the first one to vote FOR health care. They know we need it but are too scared to be the first person to vote for it. Any time you see voting strongly along party lines like this it's a clear indicator that one or both parties are broken."

"@mgraves81 That is only if they are in danger of dieing then and there. Long term conditions like AIDS and cancer require expensive long term treatment. You would not be covered for that until it was too late. Also people with no insurance never get check ups, this allows conditions that could have been caught and dealt with to creep up on people and kill them."

"You have no option but to pay taxes, seeking so many deductions is in line with disliking the tax code. The issue with the Bush tax cuts was the super rich getting such a huge benefit in comparison to average people who ended up with nearly no change. You've earned that social security money by being forced to pay in to it all your life. If you don't take it you are giving the govt free money, something I am guessing you would disagree with. However Palin has been going around the country talking about how terrible it is to ever have the govt pay for health care. She DOES have an option to not pay for it and she is clearly doing well enough to do so. Also she has been talking about poor of a job the govt does with health care. If she actually believes that then she is knowingly putting her child in danger. THAT is why this is being brought up, She is either lieing about the dangers of socialized care, has no interest in the well being of her child, or is so fucking stupid she has no..."

"@kelmaster1 Haha don't worry about rambling or being a dick. You haven't rambled and you actually have experience on the subject so you get the right to have a strong opinion. From the sound of it construction is more likely to be one of the last sectors to switch not one of the first. Another idea, if you don't mind commenting... Split all the departments so they have an Imperial group and a metric group. Start with most people and most projects being part of the Imperial group and slowly move people over to metric. After the first few projects you would have a group of people who were fairly used to metric. This way when the new people slow things down as they move over to metric the rest of the group can pick up the slack and keep things moving. It would also have the same effect with manufacturing and equipment. Demand growing slowly would give private groups a chance to slowly switch things over and would allow smaller manufacturers to do some profitable customized work. This..."

"@designerutah 1) Because the rest of the world is using metric our trade in and out of the country is limited 2) Shipping plans to or from the US risk errors like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... ... 3) We are already support dual units because we need to deal with the reasons above. Making full switch will SAVE us money in the long run. 4) we look like stubborn backwards jackasses. This sounds really stupid and should not matter but the truth is that it does. I expect many standard sizes to stay in place for sometime and fade out as style and preference of people in that sector change. I don't think cooks across the nation will be giving up the 'cup' as a unit of measurement anytime soon, but given a few generations it might be hard to find kitchen tools that still uses 'cups' at all. Remember, I'm not arguing that we need to do this ASAP at any cost. I KNOW it'll take generations that is why we should make every minor change we can to get started. My can of..."

"Thanks @kelmaster1. I thought that the issue was more then just some tools and signs like everyone thinks. If you don't mind me asking another question, Was the whole project scraped or did they decide to ease the pace of it? It sounds like something that you can slowly ease in to but that would be very very costly if done all at once. I would think that setting many little long term deadlines could work. First add in dual units to all plans and calculations. Then ask people to start using metric units occasionally. Then start making it difficult but not impossible to access the Imperial units for things. The main thing that everyone seems to lack is experience, that only comes with time and usage. Would such a plan work in your experience?"
- Karl Evard
""It would be an enormous, wildly expensive undertaking for no real gain." I strongly disagree. 1) In X years (50 sounds about right to me) we would be able to drop the Imperial system entirety so that we don't have to know both systems as we do now. 2) We would stop looking so stupid and stubborn to the rest of the world. It may seem silly but these little things matter. 3) A slow phase in is a given. Done correctly (replacing things that break and use Imperial with things that use Metric or both) costs could be greatly reduced and be spread over a long period of time. 4) Trade would become easier since we would be measuring in the same units as everybody else Personally I just see this as another case of people hurting them self little by little because they are too lazy and cheep to sit down and do something for the greater good."
- Karl Evard
"That's true, But it sounds like they were not even up to that problem yet. It's a given that we will have about 10 or 20 years where every sign and label is in both metric and English. That means that they could just replace signs that need replacing with signs containing both units. That should drop the extra cost of converting down to almost zero for quite sometime."
- Karl Evard
"The switch will be very expensive and we can get away with not using metric at the moment. Everyone knows it's a good idea to switch over we are just to lazy and cheep to do it."

"RTFA. This quote is from the article "More specifically, Canada has been much stricter about limiting banks’ leverage, the extent to which they can rely on borrowed funds." The whole over leveraged thing is EXACTLY what the kind of thing that Canada has laws against that we don't. "The only thing I can think that keeps America from defaulting is our military capacity." It sure helps but also remember that the US dollar is world reserve currency. If it became worthless many countries would lose a lot savings over night. Also when debt is compared to yearly GDP it's only about 70%. Many other countries are well over 100%. The higher that percentage the more likely you are going to miss a payment and that is what other countries are worried about. And the US has NEVER missed a payment."

"This is nothing new. He did the same thing to the dems when Bush was in office. It only happened less often since back then they had fewer chances to actually get anything done. The powers that be may have changed but both sides are acting the same way they did when Rs were in charge."

I see at least 3 posts that have done just that. You ignored the first, actually gave a good response to the next and then gave the last this silly, dismissive, and insulting comment that is, as I have just shown you, clearly wrong. Please learn how to actually have an argument before posting any more on the internet. I'm sure this childish nonsense is making Lincoln and Jefferson spin in their graves."

""What would happen if they just printed it in dollar bills and paid it off tonight." Since we are the world reserve currency that we would tank the world economy. Us doing that scares the shit out of just about every nation in the world. It's important to understand that being in debt is not really bad as long as you can make your payments. We've been doing that so no one except people who have a political agenda or are worriers care how big the debt is right now. The problem is not that we have debt but that we have a GROWING debt. At this rate one day we will not be able to pay our monthly payments. That means we will default on a loan and THAT means the world will freak the fuck out and lose trust in lending to us because at the moment the US govt has NEVER defaulted on a loan to anyone."
- Karl Evard
"I think it's stuff like federal bonds. To put it in every day terms before this huge housing crash it was considered savvy to have a mortgage out on your house even if you had enough money in the bank to pay it off. The reason was that you could get a better rate for that money in the stock market then the bank would charge you for the loan. So in theory you could have $1M in the bank and still be considered $100K in debt if you have a $100K mortgage."

"I think that we can agree that all news is biased. The problem is that Fox is not even trying to correct it's bias while most other news organizations are. A good news organization is biased by over reporting things that have thoughts on or having a news anchor that tells a story in a certain way. Fox goes way beyond that by going out of it's way to make up news and hand down view points to it's shows from on high. Glaring proof of that is in all the tea party protests that they organized. When has CNN or MSNBC tried to do anything remotely like that? I understand that people who are conservative like Fox because it tells them things they want to hear but it's not a realistic view of the world. I'll never be able to understand people who want to live in a day dream like that. Is reality so bad that you can't survive on anything but lies?"
