- papachatzis
- Apostolos Tsompanopoulos
- papachatzis

there is no "sort by size" functionality for has:attachment though: Use IMAP, and a client like Thunderbird. You will be able to sort by size the "Gmail/All Mail" folder and delete the useless stuff. Or just buy the extra storage...

Eating a chocolate-n-nuts ice cream while reading about Google's new translation toolkit (http://is.gd/Vr5a). It's great to see more companies identifying the value of localized information. I wonder about its ability to integrate with other platforms like Transifex and share its translation memory.

"If you're curious about large-scale meat-processing machinery and sanitation procedures, definitely watch this video. If you ever, ever want to eat at McDonald's (or for that matter, beef) again, don't."
- Victor Ryden
from Bookmarklet
This isn't entirely fair - watching Ted Nuggent cleaning a deer he killed with an arrow wouldn't be that charming either. People need to face the facts: Meat is murder, and murder is yummy. No matter how you change the process from cute grazing cow to having a full belly, there's going to be death and blood and what this author calls, "horror." It's nasty, but it's hardly unexpected.
- Ciaoenrico
from my POV, the really creepy part of all this is how *proud* McDs and friends are of this process.
- MikeAmundsen
@Ciaoenrico: i agree with some of your points: meat is murder: yummy? well, that's another thing. also, whether the deed is done by machine or man, it's gonna be messy. here's my basic point: most people have a visceral, immediate reaction of discomfort when seeing this. why is that? are they just 'wimps' or is something else at play in our brains?
- MikeAmundsen
If you are looking to stop eating sausage, try reading "The Jungle".
- Mathew A. Koeneker
There's a planet to feed: who don't want to optimize processes for cheaper food?
- Jérôme Flipo
@Jerome: what you see is here not cheap at all. in fact, the resources used for this plant, for the animals bred for this plant, and the resources used to ship, package, and sell the meat here all adds up to much more than locally grown, butchered, and sold meats. the work here is definitely *profitable*, but it's not cheap.
- MikeAmundsen
Would it be better if every fast food place had a mini-butcher shop in the back room? Would that somehow change things? Meat usually requires processing, it's been that way for thousands of years. Those who have grown-up in urban America without exposure to rural life, farms, and livestock do miss out on some things, it seems.
- Robert Kenney
I funded much of my college education working in the meat department of a grocery store, part of a 27-store chain. I remember when we switched from making our own burger and went to pre-made burger from Monfort Packing in Colorado. It came in tubes, so we still hand packed for the meat case, but for a few weeks I couldn't get Soylent Green off my mind.
- Bob Young
@Robert: first, what you see here is not at all "rural" - it's very "urban." also, (for me anyway) this is not about whether meat is good/bad or processing is messy or not. what do you think of the comment i offered to Jerome regarding common people's reaction to seeing this?
- MikeAmundsen
Am I the only one that wasn't the least bit grossed out by watching this video? Maybe it was because just like Bob Young, I worked in a high volume supermarket meat room at one time (something like a Costco, before chains like that existed). I don't eat red meat any more for my own reasons and other forms of meat are eaten less than once a week, but it has nothing to do with anything...
- April Russo (app103)
@April: excellent question. i really *do* wonder about how many folks are grossed out. my ad-hoc tests (using similar videos; nothing like a 'Ted Nugent' kinda thing) resulted in mostly negative reactions.
- MikeAmundsen
@MikeAmundsen Well I like being a little bombastic, but yes - unless one is a vegetarian, you have to face facts that hamburgers are NOM, and get to your plate via a cattle prod and a gutting process that's more violent than all of the Saw movies put together. So yes, it is murder, and I own up to that, but I also accept that because I love pot roast so much.
- Ciaoenrico
BTW, I am all for the vegetarians. See, I feel I'm being non-hypocritical by facing up to how meat gets on my plate. Vegetarians own up to it as well, but they have a different conclusion - they do without. Either way, I think both sides are consistent, even if they don't like me very much for admitting I enjoy consuming death.
- Ciaoenrico
why would I not want to eat beef again after watching this? I'm really hungry now
- Richard Lawler
@Ciaoenrico: i hear ya - that's all cool. i've been a viggie for 30+ years. not a big deal w/ me; just the way i roll. i am also 'all for the meaties.' i see nothing evil in it at all; we can call roll. what *does* strike me is the reactions.
- MikeAmundsen
Robert Kenney - if beef was ground on site, things would cost more, but on the other hand, contamination, if any, would not be spread across millions of pounds of ground beef over most of the nation.
- Andrew C
But ground on site would mean less sanitation at more locations. Do you have any idea of the number of health violations that currently exist in many fast food restaurants already?
- April Russo (app103)
Good point. And yes, I actually occasionally read the online health inspector reports for my local city. Sometimes it's reassuring (no major citations, and none recent) and sometimes not so much.
- Andrew C
Yeah, and just think, most places are worse than the reports state, due to the fact that they usually know when the inspector is coming and they clean up the place as much as possible and behave themselves while he's there. Those places that fail are run by the truly ignorant that don't know the first thing about sanitation, otherwise they wouldn't have been caught.
- April Russo (app103)
Thanks, April Russo, but I wish you hadn't brought up the rat crap as I was eating a PB&J at the time. As an aside, I can't even express how happy I was when Nugent left Michigan and became a Texan.
- Bob Young
Yeah, if you used Twitter to keep up to date on the swine flu epidemic, and the tweets and RTs weren't from the CDC or WHO or a reputable source in the know, then yeah. you deserve a kick in the gootch.

I suppose it also depends on what software. GoogleDocs are not Open Source but being freely accessible takes the sting out of that.
- Jean-Claude Bradley
I think the point Ian was making, getting to the data, and having access to data is perhaps more important that how the software works. Doesn't mean open source isn't important, but in a service based world, that open data gets even more important
- Deepak Singh
Well without the data there is nothing for the software to crunch :)
- Jean-Claude Bradley
And without the software, there where to put the data :) Seriously... it's because of software that we now actually see why OpenData matters... if we had not the tools to process it, we just as well redo the original experiment and see for ourselves...
- Egon Willighagen
Well if we had the data, we would be able to and develop our own toos. I think the key is that they're all important, and depending on the specific usecase, one might be more important than the other
- Deepak Singh
Deepak, that's how I ended up in cheminformatics... I had data, but no tools...
- Egon Willighagen
I think openness is equally important for both of them. In the end it is all about "standing on the shoulders of giants" instead of wasting time for unnecessary redundant work (creating software or data sets from scratch). Transparency is another advantage of it. So no, I don't share the opinion of this statement.
- Konrad Förstner
Konrad, absolutely! I've seen several people reimplement subgraph isomorphism /MCSS (which takes half a PhD year to get it right) which could have been spend on actual data analysis...
- Egon Willighagen
I think all of this is both true and wrong. Sure open data and open source are great. But the progress of science is made from knowledge and ideas. Those are captured mostly in papers not data or programs.
- Jonathan Eisen
It also depends on the data. Some data should never be freely exchanged.
- alphaxion
Jonathan, knowledge is nothing more than models that fits the data. If people only publish the models, without the data, then making alternative models, or just prove the published model wrong, is made unneededly difficult. And one major obstacle why published papers do not contain data, is the like of good tools.
- Egon Willighagen
Egon - Access to data is fundamentally important. Access to tools is too. But if we cannot read the papers (or indirectly get access to the knowledge contained in the papers), all we have is an overwhelming amount of information and some toys to play with it. Standing on the shoulders of giants is not about using their data or their tools per se. It is about building upon their discoveries and their knowledge.
- Jonathan Eisen
Jonathan, OD and OS are equally important to me. Knowledge is a derived good. Data is more important to me. Gigantic knowledge is nice, but showing that that knowledge is actually gigantic or crap, often still requires peer review of the data. Getting cutting edge data, requires expensive analytical devices, or many year organic synthesis... access to the raw data is much better than Open Access to some PDF hamburger, as the peer review will be much more independent and allows much more efficient ...
- Egon Willighagen
... establishment if the acchievement is indeed gigantic or nonsense (or fraud for that matter)...
- Egon Willighagen
It's easy to stand on the shoulders of Darwin, or Newton... it's more difficult to stand on the shoulders of Nobel prize winners, and it's impossible to stand on the shoulders of future Nobel prize winners and smart scientists otherwise... that's all.
- Egon Willighagen
Egon - again, I support OD, OS completely and have been pushing it for years. But I guess we will have to disagree on the OA part. In general I think one is able to use the data and understand how the software works only because directly or indirectly one has had access to ideas, conclusions, discussions, etc. Production and release of OD and OS is wonderful. But as someone who has produced reams and reams of genomic data, I know that I am primarily judged by my papers and not releasing data.

I've seen these before and thought it was hilarious. This seems like something that Tad would really get into... except he'd make me take the picture while he's running... of course then I wouldn't tell him when 2 seconds was up (and he'd just keep running, I think... now THAT would be funny).
