In a lot of ways, 1999 allowed for sites like eBay, Amazon and their ilk to come out above the piles of dead and dying. This correction might see the wheat of the social web rise from the, you know, crap. - Steve Spalding

At least the recent and upcoming problems in finance can show to many people that there has to be really good plans (and not just plans but ways to implement them in good way). Plans without right action is like jumping to the wrong direction while attempting to go to other. I wonder what is right thing to do; kick many people out of work or find better ways to business? The Reckoning - Taking Hard New Look at a Greenspan Legacy - Series - NYTimes.com
Thursday at 12:48 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"George Soros, the prominent financier, avoids using the financial contracts known as derivatives “because we don’t really understand how they work.” Felix G. Rohatyn, the investment banker who saved New York from financial catastrophe in the 1970s, described derivatives as potential “hydrogen bombs.” And Warren E. Buffett presciently observed five years ago that derivatives were “financial weapons of mass destruction, carrying dangers that, while now latent, are potentially lethal.” One prominent financial figure, however, has long thought otherwise. And his views held the greatest sway in debates about the regulation and use of derivatives — exotic contracts that promised to protect investors from losses, thereby stimulating riskier practices that led to the financial crisis. For more than a decade, the former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has fiercely objected whenever derivatives have come under scrutiny in Congress or on Wall Street." - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet
more evidence that *many* folks knew all along how this would all turn out. - MikeAmundsen
Very interesting article... I actually managed to get through the whole thing. What was a bit stunning for me is that Greenspan is blaming greed and dis-honesty / lack of integrity in wall-street for the crisis! @Gabe Check out the app and you will get it right away. I am really psyched to see it taking off, actually. Spreading quickly! - Christopher Sacca
Apparently this requires a Facebook account. Is there a simple way to understand? - Gabe
You really don't do Facebook? Basically, this app allows users to "trade" quirky favors in exchange for their friends promising to vote for Obama. Stuff like giving them shotgun in the car, making them a mix tape, or slow dancing with them. It is growing really fast right now, so psyched to see it resonating. - Christopher Sacca
Very cool. Added and used. - Heidi Moon
So what kind of quirky favor is a moustache? You grow one in exchange for a vote? Or you give one to somebody? - Gabe
Dude, seriously, try Facebook. If only just to know what everyone else is talking about. I assure you it will be eye opening. :) - Christopher Sacca
Ok, I sent out several requests and not just to people I already know will vote Obama. It's hard to beleive this could be the kind of thng that makes a difference, but you can never be too careful. - Clare Dibble
So, one of the ideas behind this was some research we saw showing that young people are most likely to follow through on an action if they make a personal commitment to a friend. My biggest fear from youth in this election is not that they don't care. Quite the contrary, I think we have a more informed and engaged young voter demographic than in recent history. Nevertheless, the predictions of their likelihood of actually showing up to the polls are discouraging. Thus, these efforts. We will see :) - Christopher Sacca
