"How diverse are the ethnic backgrounds of the people using Facebook?" Methodology: The U.S. Census Bureau's Genealogy Project publishes a data set containing the frequency of popular surnames along with a breakdown by race and ethnicity. This data set allows us to predict what a person's race is based solely on his or her surname. "How diverse are the ethnic backgrounds of the people using Facebook?" There are three kinds of relationship ties: Strong ties: People we care deeply about; Weak ties: People we are loosely connect to, like friends of friends; Temporary ties: People we don't know, and interact with temporarily. When designing for strong ties: Think about their existing means of communication. Phone calls, text messages, email. Strong ties already have established ways to interact, we should support them, and not try and replace them with our own messaging systems; showing more information about the ten closest people is likely to be much more valuable than showing less information about many more people; avoid generic terms such as “Friends”. This will likely lead to over-populating groups and reducing their relevance; suggest connections to people, but communicate the effects of adding new connections.

Applying to PhD programs takes a different kind of work than applying to ugrad programs. It's not about the school or the classes or the students. It's really about the faculty. You want to find the right faculty who can support you in your endeavors. And this ain't easy.

In social network analysis, the tie is privileged over the node, that is, the connection over the subject (person). Ties, used in social network analysis, are a means to abstract and diagram the connectedness of a number of nodes/individuals deemed to be connected. The social network analysis model of social is an abstraction: a number, density, and connectedness of members of a bounded network. Social networks, or social tools of talk, are simply a new means of mediating communication and interaction in a manner that preserves interactions on a publicly accessible medium. We relate to each other, and in our communication and interaction, express and "exchange" the content of communication. The medium facilitates asynchronous communication between people whose mutual connectedness online can make them present to one another in a fashion that transcends the limitations of physical co-presence. Relationships form out of communication. Social life is transactional.

Companies should have a ‘Customer Strategy’ not a ‘Twitter or Facebook Strategy’. To start, first understand your customers social behaviors. While using surveys is an effective way of getting a strong baseline set of knowledge, you must be constantly monitoring and updating the changes your ever-changing customers are having. *Focus on disruptive technologies.

By Rachel Happe of the Community Roundtable, a peer network for community managers and social media practitioners. "I think a lot of what Umair points to is definitely taking place but I also think Umai has not articulated the value that weak links do have and social networks capacity to use that value in efficient ways - even if that value is not huge. I also think he threw the baby out with the bathwater – meaning there are online environments where real and lasting relationships are developing, because many of these relationships are developing in more narrowly defined online communities.

Despite all the excitement surrounding social media, the Internet isn't connecting us as much as we think it is. It's largely home to weak, artificial connections, what I call thin relationships, or the illusion of real relationships. According to Haque's hypothesis, relationship inflation has cheapened the very word "relationship." What are the wages of relationship inflation? Three cancers eating away at the vitality of today's web. First, attention isn't allocated efficiently; people discover less what they value than what everyone else likes, right this second. Second, people invest in low-quality content. Third, and most damaging, is the ongoing weakening of the Internet as a force for good.
