Yes, Facebook, thank you so much for your *amazing* suggested friend feature. A grandmother type with a crazy sweatshirt and another with her pants pulled down around her ankles. I'm so impressed with your uncanny ability to find just my type of new friend.
Screen shot 2009-09-27 at 4.27.16 PM.png
I thought these were suggestions made by other people not the automatic "you know their friends so you must know them" method? - CAJ, somewhere else
Yes, the "suggested by" gives it away. It's not the "you might also know…" automated recommendation. It says more about your friends than it does about Facebook. - Mistletoe Glen
That was my understanding too. These are friends your friends suggest. Interesting circles you run in; I can't imagine a real person putting that rear shot as a profile pic on fb. - Kenley Neufeld from iPhone
sometimes I acidently end up accepting these as they feel just like actual friend requests. That bottom new friend might take some explaining to my wife. Facebook ought to consider letting users turn this feature off if they'd like. I know I'd turn it off. - Thomas Hawk
That's hilarious. I always get recommended people I already know that are new to FB - Francine Hardaway
The really question is did you friend either? - RAPatton
haha, no, neither. I was tempted to friend the grandmotherly type since we've got 12 mutual friends but I have no idea in blazes who she is. - Thomas Hawk
I'm more impressed with the 305 messages in your inbox. - Kevin Pedraja
I'm so terrible with my email/flickrmail/facebook mail. I try and try and just can't keep up with it all. - Thomas Hawk
Im less likely to subscribe to either .. unless I know them ,,, - johnpiercy
I have 587 unread messages in my Facebook inbox. I actually read all them through e-mail, and there's no good way to mark all as read. Facebook sucks for e-mail-like communication (as does Twitter). - Jesse Stay
At least facebook should not show the same suggested friends again and again once we hit X on it but it does show them repeatedly. Very annoying :( - Muhammad Ahmed
Facebook is so lame - just sayin. - Jannifer @wordsforliving
inbox 305 whatt :D this lol - mariamaqdalena
i currently have 4647 unread messages on facebook :/ lol - Geoff Jackson
What a contrast. - Carolyn Chan
4647 is alot Geoff. I hate all forms of email myself actually. It feel burdensome feeling that you have to respond to someone or risk offending them. I much prefer interacting with people directly in forums like FriendFeed or DMU on Flickr in public than one on one. Email should be reserved for things that really do need to be kept private. - Thomas Hawk
LOL...What would you do w/o FB? - Tammy Marshall
Tamara: Use My Space? lol - Geoff Jackson
Thomas: Yeah my Facebook is pretty hectic and I although I do read my messages on there, I can not keep up with them at the rate they come in. I rarely use email at all these days though unless it is to send files to someone. I just hope one day i will not have to find an old message on Facebook, haha - Geoff Jackson
I am so with you. It's annoying. I spend the most time on Facebook x-ing out people I've never heard of that might be my friends. It gets better. Yesterday I got a notification - where my high priority Scrabble and Lexulous pings turn up - of some guy, never heard of him either, that had just joined FB and did I want to suggest friends. WTF? - Cathleen Rittereiser
it seems to periodically (weekly?) refresh the suggested friends.... - Jason A. Samfield

It's a done deal--Bloomberg has acquired BusinessWeek.

Not announced, but my colleague Tom Lowry says $2 million to $5 million---plus liabilities like subscriptions, severance, etc., which are MUCH more than that, no doubt. - Robert Hof from email

Tracking To-Do's is not effective on Evernote because it does not have alarm or a future driven trigger. - Nitin Nanivadekar

My son has to have a permission slip signed to listen to the president's address. :( I'm ashamed to be living in Arizona now. I wonder if he'll get picked on for listening to the speech? Part of me doesn't want him to play with any of the kids whose parents don't sign the slip.
Given from what I've seen on the news, it ain't just Arizona. I can't believe the legs this story has. - Derrick
I think this whole thing means parents have no ability to teach their children reason and debate. Now it's all about shutting up the other side. Would anyone like another Red Scare? Sure, I'll take two so I have an excuse to throw barbs at the other side and call them names. Stupid. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com from iPod
Yeah, you know my thoughts on it: http://friendfeed.com/bluecoc... - Fa La La La Lindsay
It means a lot of parents are (a) stupid to begin with and (b) unwilling to take on the responsibility of "teachable moments" themselves. Or, you know, be a parent. - Spidra Webster
In my younger years, I watched a speech by Reagen, Bush Sr and Clinton while they were in office that was directed towards school kids my age. We didn't hav eto sign anything and the schools made it mandatory :/ - Tsali, The Native of FF
Permission slips for teaching about sex, I get that. Some families and cultures prefer not to have the schools take care of that. But permission to listen to a historical speech? Do we need to start giving permission to learn about WW2 and the genocide? There are halocaust deniers out there. How about learning about Martin Luther King Jr and his I hAve a dream speech? It's race-based,... more... - Pete Delucchi from iPhone
It just bothers me that these are the same people who told us to respect the office of the President, no matter who is occupying it when people were upset about going to war. And it scares me how much HATRED there is for Obama. Issues aside, just the pure hatred and aggression people feel towards Obama is frightening. - Trish R
Maybe I'm just biased, or conditioned to think this way, but when I see all of this Obama backlash, the first thing that pops in my head is: WE DON'T WANT NO BLACK PRESIDENT. - Derrick
Derrick: we don't want THAT black president. If Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell or Walter E. Williams ran, I'd vote for them in a heartbeat. - Craig Eddy
And Craig, if one of them had been elected I'm sure there would be absolute outrage that parents were keeping their children home because that president were making a speech to schools. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
It's ridiculous to require a permission slip for this, but I support giving parents the opt-out option. - Craig Eddy
@Tina: it's convenient that you can ascribe racist intentions to every criticism of the President, but that doesn't make it valid. UPDATE: oops, I mis-read your comment, Tina. Sorry. Strike this here, I'll use it in a second tho.... - Craig Eddy
Well Tad, it is not the kids faults that there parents are bigots. - Joe
@J. Deakins: it's convenient that you can ascribe racist intentions to every criticism of the President, but that doesn't make it valid. - Craig Eddy
Opt out? Hope he leads them in the pledge then the parents can opt out of the pledge opt out of respecting the flage opt out of respecting troops in time of war - yeah its 100 days after Bush and we sorta forgot that in time of war with troops on the hostile ground you respect your Commander in Chief - opt out of that - WarLord
Doesn't mean it is invalid either Craig, but please sugar coat it. - Joe
WarLord, Jehovah's Witnesses already do opt out of saying the Pledge of Allegiance. - Rochelle
Some parents prefer to do the critical thinking for their children. Not permitting or opting out of the viewing is a perfect way to let your child know it's not important to form your own opinions or respect the POTUS, but listening blindly to the ideology of your parents is paramount. - Pete Delucchi from iPhone
@Pete: I'm sure that would apply to allowing a valedictorian to thank God for their accomplishments too, right? - Craig Eddy
What a good group of crazies to use as an example Rochelle. - Joe
My high school Freshman was bummed he wasn't getting to see it. He wanted the opportunity to "point out all the fallacies". It was a proud moment for me. - Craig Eddy
Yes I'm aware of both Witness and Adventist "Graven Image" views that however is a tiny side issue to the larger one of hyper patriots suddenly deciding that their partisan politics is more important than our troops at war - WarLord
J.Deakins, my point is that there already are groups of Americans who don't recite the Pledge. Although I don't personally agree with their religion, I give them the space and right to practice it. *shrug* - Rochelle
Craig is drinking Cheny's cool aid. - Joe
*blink blink* - Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
Whatever Rochelle - they are crazy. No need to be PC there. - Joe
No need to be civil either, of course. - Craig Eddy
If the parent wrote the speech for the valedictorian, then yes, Craig. Otherwise, give credit where it's due, God, Allah, Buddha, all the same. - Pete Delucchi from iPhone
Civil like Bill O'Rielly? - Joe
or civil like Rush? - Joe
Oh, I didn't realize Bill O'Reilly or Rush were in this conversation. But way to deflect. - Craig Eddy
Examples of GOP civility. - Joe
I seriously doubt many valedictorians need/want their PARENT to write their speech for them, but if makes you feel better to think that, go for it. - Craig Eddy
How civil of you Craig. - Joe
Craig I'm waiting how do you feel about disrespect of Commander in Chief in time of war with our troops in harms way - those permission slips provide aid and comfort to America's enemies - WarLord
I think those men are both entertainers who are paid to generate an audience. - Craig Eddy
I think all the John Birch members will not be allowing their kids to see that speech either. - Joe
Why isn't he going to see it, Craig? Are you not permitting him? Why not give him the opportunity to debate those "fallacies"? I think it's important for children to be able to figure out things for themselves eventually, you are there to guide, not brainwash. Brainwashing leads to backlash and extremism... we all need more moderation and the only way to achieve that is to expose ourselves to conflicting viewpoints and consider them objectively. - Fa La La La Lindsay
@Lindsay: It's for K - 6 as far as I know. I would never "shield" him, and we rarely discuss politics. He has formed his opinion through his own reading. - Craig Eddy
J.Deakins: respect for another person's religion is not "PC." It's actually one of the core founding principles of this country. I don't happen to believe what the Witnesses believe, but I also don't think it's necessary to denigrate their belief here or anywhere else. #justsaying - Bren -- Still Believes
1UP Bren. - Rochelle
@Bren: respect for another person period. Whether its religion, politics, or choice of football team. Without it, we're doomed. - Craig Eddy
Rochelle and Bren - *yawn* - Joe
You know what I do think that children should hear speeches from god fearing GOPers - kids need to learn fear, hate, and intolerance - what better place to do it? - Joe
Its been one election and 100 days but suddenly with a change of parties the Office of President and the Commander in Chief is far less deserving of respect. No longer dissent un american or unpatriotic. Partisan politics in time of war with troops in harms way is just a yawn. The hypocrisy of this dramatic and cynical sea change is breathtaking. - WarLord
oh Bren we have a group based on tolerance and mutual respect among those of different backgrounds in FF, many folks you know are in there, you are welcome too. - Joe
As well as the rest of you: http://friendfeed.com/the-sol... - Joe
OK, I'll be a contrarian here. If this were a "political" speech about foreign policy, health care, or some issue that's a subject of political debate, I'd totally support the need for permissions slips, and I might even give the school board an earful about it... - Ken Sheppardson
... Maybe I'm just being naive, but it never occurred to me that's what the President had in mind. My expectation is that to note the start of the first school year since he took office, he'd offer a "school is important, study hard, listen to your parents, and maybe you can grow up to be President" message. I mean you might disagree with him on politics, but do you really think he's a complete idiot? - Ken Sheppardson
Ken, but don't you realize? That's all part of the illuminati-socialist-fascist plan! If people become educated and stay in school, they might demand government that works for them. The horror. - mikepk
It is hard to fathom how far, how firm and how fast present divisions have taken hold. Confirms for me that ideology overcomes rational thought for many. - Eric Logan
No Ken, the last President was the idiot. - Joe
1up mikepk - Joe
1up Eric - Joe
Parents will let their kids listen to pro football players and pro basketball players, rappers and celebrities ... and yet they won't let them listen to the President for fear of "ideology". Rational thought has obviously been lost in the process here. People are getting way too bent out of shape over this. - Allan Besselink
"President George H.W. Bush delivered a nationally televised speech to students from a Washington school in fall 1991, encouraging them to say no to drugs and work hard." -- http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn... - Ken Sheppardson
"In November 1988, President Reagan delivered more politically charged remarks that were made available to students nationwide. Among other things, Reagan called taxes "such a penalty on people that there's no incentive for them to prosper ... because they have to give so much to the government." -- http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn... - Ken Sheppardson
...just for context. - Ken Sheppardson
Many parents who's kids won't seeing the speech will be watching the new Sarah Palin/Michelle Bachman TV show : "Crazy Talk" - Joe
I get annoyed at the bogeyman of the evil all-controlling Government (capital G). If we strive to the heights of our own ideals then we, the people, should *be* the government. You know, that government of the people, by the people, for the people, that shall not perish from the earth. All that stuff? By framing every debate as "regular folk" vs "The Government" you're essentially saying democracy is a failed experiment. - mikepk
There's a different set of rules for this POTUS let's be real here. - Michelle
I thought it was for grades K-6, too, but my son said they're seeing it in high school (for the ones who have permission, of course). - Trish R
You know what, George H.W. Bush attended by High School graduation. I wasn't a fan of Bush but I was still pleased and honored to have the President at my graduation and proudly shook his hand when I got my diploma. I recall watching a video of him talking about saying no to drugs and the Thousand Points of Light as well. Long story short, if the President is going to address children... more... - AJ Kohn
Bush's CIA directer Tenet was my commencement speaker in college...... I skipped it and went camping in Estes Park, CO instead. - Joe
How can you become educated about a person's idealogical and political beliefs if you refuse to listen to what they have to say? - MVB (Grinch of FF)
I don't think I'm being paranoid, xenophobic, or exhibiting low self esteem to say that I don't want classroom time taken up by political messages, unless I'm sure there's going to be a teacher there who can frame it as that after it's been presented and offer context and explain that there are alternative views. In the context of a Political Science class, fine, but as part of just some general assembly where the kids immediately head off to gym class after, no thanks. - Ken Sheppardson
And I now have in my head Reagan's 1988 message that included the comment that "taxes can be such a penalty on people that there's no incentive for them to prosper ... because they have to give so much to the government" not any sort of hypothetical Obama speech. [That comment was in response to a Q from a student, not part of the prepared/approved address, BTW] - Ken Sheppardson
I will be sharing this speech with children in India, it has universal appeal - Aaman (Clone of FF)
Last school year, my son was in his English class, and the election came up. Many people spoke up with hate messages about Obama. My son spoke up in support of Obama and asked them why they hate him so much. The teacher asked my son, "How many states are there in the U.S.?" My son said "50." The teacher said, "Then you're smarter than Obama." So how is that not a political message in a... more... - Trish R
Yes, Trish, the teacher was wrong. But, since we have yet to actually see/hear the speech, how can we know what the content may be? - MVB (Grinch of FF)
@Ken: Come on! They're over at someone's house and they hear something and there's no one to provide context. Or in the mall or ... anywhere. And why is it the job of the teacher to 'frame it'? I usually agree with you but here ... we're coddling children and parents WAY too much. The line of thought here is that nothing that is of any intellectual debate should be presented in school - that MAAD should be shouted down because I really think we should be talking about smoking instead. - AJ Kohn
This is political posturing with kids as the pawns - it's that simple. One teacher over a single year will have 1000x more opportunity to influence a child's thinking counter to how the parent is trying to influence he/she. Some people home school for this reason, but that's not applicable in this situation since we're talking about a public school here. PUBLIC <--- hmm, important word here. - Micah Wittman
Sorry, AJ... for a second there I was imagining we had a school system that actually teaches kids critical thinking skills and has a different set of standards than the mall or my neighbors' basement. I forgot. Nevermind. ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
Seems like to me, people don't want their children to hear messages from the president only when they views differ from their own. I can't ever recollect such vitriol when the president was going to talk to kids (wasn't GWB talking to school kids during the 9/11 attacks?). What makes it so different now? Obama is the FIRST PREZ to ever talk to kids, ZOMG!?! - Derrick
I just know I want to watch the address now to see what these parents are keeping from their children. (Thrilled to be Canadian) - Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
LOL. Wow, that's why I live in Canada. LOL. - Zachary TG
Thanks Mark. seriously. parents don't want their children to hear that? *shakes head* - Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
After reading through the speech all I could think was that I wish someone in a position of influence (other than my parents) would have given me that talk when I was a child. - joey
Seriously? You need a permission slip to watch _that_?! It's totally bipartisan. No political agenda, just a message to stay in school and keep trying. - Sparky
To anyone who feels like it's necessary to see the speech before you approve your child watching it: Would you have demanded to read the speech beforehand of Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush or George W Bush before allowing your child to sit in a classroom and watch? - Trish R
Those other presidents weren't black, Trish. FYI. - Derrick
Anybody believe this speech wasn't re-written over the past couple of days? Anyways, much of this is PR to try and stop his sinking poll numbers. - Spencer
One step forward, 3 steps back. - Trish R
trish, it's looking more like 1 step forwards, tricked out delorian ride back - alphaxion
I had to sign a permission slip for sex ed. A political gimmick (as some perceive) might justify a permission slip. I couldn't imagine telling my child's school that my child couldn't attend the broadcast. That's especially a bad idea if you really believe it's just a dogmatic political engagement. It's a great opportunity to learn, regardless of your political affiliation and especially so if it's controversial and politically charged. Sounds like fun :) - Jason Nunnelley
If I was a student and my parent did sign the permission form for me or my teacher or school opted out of the broadcast, I would ditch school to find a way to watch it. - Pete Delucchi from iPhone
sheesh - whatever your politics listening to the President of the country giving a speech specifically for students seems to me at least exactly what kids should be experiencing in school (whether public or private or home) - Shannon Clark
I think you'll get a kick out of this, then. >> http://friendfeed.com/rochell... - Miss Elle
By the way, I'm with everyone who is saying, "Racism." This is what I see, as well. If it were a white president, there would be considerably less pure anger. Sure, I get it, some of you can come up with reasons why you don't like this policy of that policy, but the fact of the matter is that white presidents have done much of what Obama is doing in the past and you didn't hate then.... more... - Miss Elle
I think D. is on point - it would happen regardless of the Black president in the office. - cecily
When I was in high school, we had both Nancy *and* Ronald Reagan visit our school in back to back school years. We were *required* to be in school both days. If we were sick, we had to have a doctor's note proving we were too ill to attend classes. I was in ROTC so I couldn't get out of participating in both appearances but I was strongly anti-Republican even at age 16/17, so to show my... more... - cecily
Cecily, I don't get your point. You dissented. Some people choose to dissent today. Were you not paying attention to all the people who hated Reagan in the 80s? Do you think Republicans and folks concerned about Obama's cult of personality originated the idea of opting out? This is a direct result of all the free thinking from Republican administrations and more conservative times - kids suing schools because a coach prayed before a football game. - Jason Nunnelley
My point, Jason, is that nobody was all up in arms when the Reagans attended my school. Nobody cried indoctrination then when, let's be honest, that whole "Just Say No!" movement was all about indoctrination. It's hypocrisy of the highest order. My point is that there is a double standard being applied to this president that has not been applied to past presidents, and I, for one, am no longer believing any soft-pedaled excuses about 'socialism' or 'indoctrination' or any of that bull. - cecily
Cicily, if you're saying it was OK for you to dissent but not OK for today's youth (or their parents) to dissent then I'm afraid that's hypocrisy. Conservatives keeping their mouths shut when the "Just say no," campaign was going on (with which they agreed) and freaking out over the "What are you going to do for Obama?" campaign is consistent with their own personal views. It's no more hypocritical than you voting for the person you want to win. - Jason Nunnelley
With all due respect, Jason - I call bullshit. And it's OK for you to believe what you want to believe, but I call 100% grade-a bovine scatulation. - cecily
It's just as silly for you to deny someone's feelings about big socialist government as it is for someone to say you only like Obama because he's black. You're both equally guilty of dehumanizing the conversation. It's not productive. So long as you like conflict, that's cool. You're feeding a fire of hate, but that's your choice. - Jason Nunnelley
Miss Elle, then I call bovine waste. It's untrue. Where have you been the last 8 years. When did the left show respect for the office of the presidency? That's either completely blind or dishonest. - Jason Nunnelley
If my daughter doesn't get to hear the speech or I see a permission slip come from the school, I may have to homeschool her. This is a positive message by the President of our Unites States, not Hugo Chavez. The fact that it has come this far is frankly an embarrassment. The Right is lashing out like a wounded animal of the drubbing in the election, and instead of licking their wounds... more... - Vince DeGeorge from iPhone
Yup, that's me. Feeding a fire of hate. *puts marshmallows on sticks and gets to roasting* Who's got the chocolate and graham crackers? We can make HATESMORES. - cecily
Where have you guys been? How did you miss all the nasty, vile rhetoric about Bush? Can't you guys just admit that you're political idealists that have no patience for the messages you don't like and accept that the guys on the other side are the same? Do you have to pretend it's about race or some other silliness? Even the left and right in DC manage to get together and have a beer afterward. Look at the Republicans that bemoaned Ted Kennedy's death. Buying into this whole hate stuff is for suckers. - Jason Nunnelley
Word of mouth sure called little-Bush several levels of idiot. However, never once was there any nationwide attempt to make schools require permission slips when showing Bush to schoolchildren. This is about the permission slips, not about what is said at home. - Miss Elle
Miss Elle: new tactic, old game. Never before did anyone use social media, direct advertising, cell phones, etc. as successfully as the 08' Obama campaign. Look, these are separate issues. One is the legitimate concerns of parents (right or wrong). The other issue is Republican tactics (which are sleazy). Calling everyone that's caught in the snare a bigot or evil is a bad idea. You... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Don't think anyone showed up at any of 43's public appearances with guns or nooses, either. Don't think any liberal/progressive ministers called for his death from their pulpits. But don't mind me, these HATESMORES are too tasty for me to get upset. - cecily
Cecily, your'e wrong. They burned him in effigy, held mock trials, crapped on the flag. If you judge anyone that disagrees with you by the most extreme examples, then you're painting with an unfairly broad brush. As for the guy with the gun, he didn't shoot anyone and broke no law. I'd bet there's 10 or so guns strapped to someone at nearly every Republican meeting in my home town,... more... - Jason Nunnelley
@Jason -- But permission slips? As a schoolteacher, and an independent voter, I was totally behind the "keep your kiddo home" thing. That seemed to be more of an individual choice. Permission slips is messing too much with education, methinks. (It should be noted that my school isn't showing the speech though I think some of my beloved knuckleheaded kiddos could benefit from a strong stay-in-school message.) - Miss Elle
Your son needs a permission slip to listen to the President's address? What is going on in this country? What has happened to the right? - PC Easy from twhirl
Look, we don't have any stupid permission slips in logic driven Alabama. I agree it's stupid. - Jason Nunnelley
http://www.nowpublic.com/world... Is this the gun toting guy at the healthcare forum? - Jason Nunnelley
It's just embarrassing as hell. - Chrimmus Tad
I agree with that Tad. Why there would be permission slips required to see the speech is bizarre. - Craig Eddy
For the record, carrying an AR-15 (AKA Assault Rifle) to a rally is a very bad idea. People shouldn't do it. But, to a gun carrier (and anyone who carries a gun is going to carried a loaded gun - cause an empty gun does one no good) this is an exercise of liberty. I disagree with that decision, just like the people that want to keep their kids home when Obama speaks. But, it doesn't mean they want to murder people. - Jason Nunnelley
A permission slip - wtf? - Mona Nomura
Quite messed up and that is my using my good language. School Fail! - Mathew A. Koeneker
I really really hate to point this out: These are the nut cases which were running the place during Daemon Cheney - Bush debacle era. Now can you see why the rest of the world thinks we are nuts to let this kind of thing happen here. USA is looking pretty bad - nothing these guys are doing makes us look like we have 2 cylinders going in a 4 cylinder engine Dudes Chill Love your neighbors - ThatDBD
Cassie's principal (she's a 4th grade teacher for those not in the know) isn't allowing it to be shown in her school because of parent complaints about "propogandizing"...Yet another example that racism isn't dead in America just because we have a black president. - Alex Scoble
Holden, there's no other rational reason to explain the reaction that parents are having to this event. - Alex Scoble
In all honesty, I just don't see how the things going on surrounding President Obama are not related to race. Take everything as a whole and it just doesn't make sense. Race seems to be the missing piece that makes it all fit together. Obviously, some people have actual grievances with Obama (even though he hasn't actually done anything yet), but nothing else explains the retarded stuff going on right now. (Funny, Alex and I agree for the same reason) - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Trish: You asked "To anyone who feels like it's necessary to see the speech before you approve your child watching it: Would you have demanded to read the speech beforehand of Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush or George W Bush before allowing your child to sit in a classroom and watch?".... I think so, yes. I wouldn't ask to review it in the case of Obama because I trust him to keep it non-partisan. Those other guys? Watch out... ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
Dear Parents Who Don't Want Their Children Listening to Anything Barack Obama Has to Say, Ask your child what they want to be when they grow up. If their answer is not "I want to be YOU mommy/daddy," please stop trying to turn them into you. Thank You, Those of Us Who Enjoy People Who Have Formed Their Own Beliefs and Opinions - EricaJoy

Jason - carrying an AR-15 to a rally is an "exercise of liberty"? Can people start exercising some responsibility? Once again, another prime example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should". I am really starting to wonder what drives people anymore. Apparently people are more driven by party-politics-babble than they are by thinking. Nobody made this big of an issue about any of the aforementioned presidents, Republican or otherwise. This is just plain stupid. - Allan Besselink
Hey, wingnuts! Maybe you guys want to try reading the speech before you freak out: http://friendfeed.com/us-poli... - Steven Perez
I read the speech. I concur with POTUS! Stay in school. Be responsible for your future. Learn all that you can. Show up. All seem pretty sensible ideas to me. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew, yeah but it's kind of sad (to me at least) that the POTUS has to say this kind of stuff to the kids today... shouldn't parents be passing on those types of things to their kids already? - Chris Heath
I agree that it seems as if many parents have given up the idea of being the role model for their children. Another argument entirely. I applaud the fact that POTUS is being forward thinking. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Allan Besselink, if you're talking to me you didn't actually read my post/comment. And, Scott, if an AR-15 is too much fire power for an individual, then so is any hunting rifle. A .223 is no more powerful a firearm than anything you'd use to shoot a deer, elk or wild boar. This is simply a pro-gun vs. anti-gun issue. You either think guns are evil and should be banned or you believe in the right to keep and bare arms. Some people believe in the right to keep and bare arms. - Jason Nunnelley
Why would you need a gun at a rally? Simple question. Simple answer? - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Scott, does that limit end at my front door? People carry guns concealed in my state - I can carry a gun practically anywhere, especially in public spaces. You just don't know I'm carrying. Like I already said, I'd never carry a gun to a rally because it's a bad idea. I think that is a mistake. But, to a person that carries a gun everywhere else, it's not a hostile act. - Jason Nunnelley
Coach Rahsheen, I usually keep a license to conceal carry. And, I never feel the need to carry a gun anywhere. I most often carry in transport to shoot for fun. I like guns. They're fun. I would never carry to a rally. It's a bad idea. - Jason Nunnelley
Come on, Jason. Are you serious? I could see if you're just carrying concealed all the time just because that's what you do. I don't have a problem with that. Carrying a rifle to a rally when you have said you want the president dead can only be seen as an act of aggression. I don't care if people carry guns, but people are definitely abusing their right to bear arms just recently. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
WRT I do not understand why it's supposed to be OK to bring guns to rallies for *THIS* presidents term but it's never been before. Mind you I grew up in Alaska. I am no stranger to guns and I love that people can use them to shoot the moose that make tasty jerky (dear anybody in alaska, please send moose jerky). I also think that people should have the right to keep a gun in *most*... more... - EricaJoy from IM
Jason, your words: "But, to a gun carrier (and anyone who carries a gun is going to carried a loaded gun - cause an empty gun does one no good) this is an exercise of liberty." That wasn't hard to read. "Responsibility" goes with rights - guns or otherwise. I agree with Coach - where's the need, "rights" or otherwise? People are too quick to jump all over having the "rights" but fail to... more... - Allan Besselink
Erica - yes, I think we have what people have, in history, called a "double standard". I fear we are now discovering the deep dark underbelly of the populace, more so than ever before. - Allan Besselink
Yes, Allan. I already said that. Scott, this whole notion of an "assault rifle" is silly. I can kill a person just as effectively with a "deer gun," as an "assault rifle." It's a designation based on how the gun looks - it's practically meaningless. I realize that antigun people don't understand that an assault gun and a hunting gun are the same thing. I also realize that antigun are... more... - Jason Nunnelley
It's not a designation based on the looks of the gun, although that's how the assault gun ban was written. An assault gun is different from other types of firearms in a few important areas and must meet more than a few of these criteria. It must fire a high speed projectile, have a high capacity magazine, be easily configured for auto or multi-round fire and have a rifled barrel (be fairly accurate up to 400 meters. That's what makes it different from a hunting rifle. - Alex Scoble
And yep, a well trained crazy with a bolt action M14 sniper rifle is much more dangerous to the public than a crazy with an assault rifle, if they are in the right place, such as a clock tower. - Alex Scoble
Don't understand exactly how gun rights belong in this debate. I personally don't have to look any further than Iran and June 2009 to realize that the right to bear arms are vitally important in a free country. - Eric Logan
Thread drift or no thread drift - it's still inane to require a permission slip to listen to the President. - Allan Besselink
I agree, Allan and us much as I hate it the visibility of an underbelly also seems apt. Hopefully, its exposure provides a cathartic opportunity at some point in the future. - Eric Logan
"Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide." <-- I could really have used hearing that as a kid. - Alix Whitmire
Anyone who would not allow their children to hear that speech should be ashamed of themselves. Period. - Joe
You know, I keep trying to tell folks (in two separate threads) that dismissing the fear some express as political duplicity ignores a growing sentiment in this country. Most of the rabid anti-Obama were also people who thought the Bush administration was drifting toward fascism. There is a strong thread of thinking in this country that our government is being pushed to a dangerous end by both parties. It's not fake emotion. And, it's not shrinking. - Jason Nunnelley
Jason, that might be the sentiment where you live, but where I live the anti-Obama people were almost all very avid supports of the previous administration. VERY. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Jason, you may have a point there about growing anti-government attitudes (on some issues) across parties (that's worth several threads thread in itself), but it's the rabid anything that's misplaced, and to fear something so straightforward as this speech is just silly, if not either (or both) pure partisanship or veiled racism. - LogEx
Tina, LogEx: I've said this a dozen times - but I happen to have zero problem with the President's speech. But, I think it's a bad idea to ignore the real emotion behind the success of the campaign to trump up concern over Obama's address. I also think it's a terribly dismissive and ignorant statement to call anyone that has concerns over the speech a racist. Reactionary? Sure. Racist? No. Its not about race. It's about socialist vs. free market. Most people don't care what race Obama is or isn't. - Jason Nunnelley
It might be simplistic to reduce it to race, but I can't help but consider that a factor. That's not to say that the other things aren't, but there's too much divide, too many people not willing to talk about it, too much history in regards to race in this country to say that it's NOT a detail. EDIT: But then again, I'm a black man in America, so that's my bias. - Derrick
There are two factors here: tabloid political spin doctors and legitimate political dissenters. Neither are driven by race. The political spin doctors are responsible for nutty stuff like Palin claiming Letterman suggested someone rape her daughter. That's insane, and I'm pretty sure she knew it when she said so. Likewise, there was a single line in the original speech that's been blown... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I've never said anyone called anyone a racist, or that the people involved are racists. I reiterate, things involving race can be racial without the people involved being racists. Big difference. - Derrick
Derrick, go to a Republican rally and say you're for lowering taxes, reducing federal spending and reducing the amount of involvement the government has in people's lives. You can be as black as coal, they'll embrace you. Get some lily white guy to go to the same group and say he's for universal healthcare, more taxes and tell them you think people shouldn't be allowed to say things... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Jason, I would say that most of these people don't understand what socialism or free markets are. Most of what I've seen is spouting extremist talking points that have no basis in fact. - LogEx
Black as coal? - Derrick
LogEx, yes. We totally agree. But, I'm trying to suggest the whole walk a mile in the crazy guy's shoes line. Just because someone's views aren't completely logical or well thought out doesn't mean they're lying about their motivation. If you empathize with people you can change their hearts and minds. If you dismiss them, you'll get nowhere. - Jason Nunnelley
Derrick, is that an offensive term? It wasn't meant to be nuanced. I'm just pointing out that a man's color doesn't matter as much as his ideology. You think all these right wing folks would embrace Hillary Clinton? - Jason Nunnelley
Not at all but they wouldn't be implying threats of assassination so brazenly either. :) - EricaJoy from IM
What I'm saying, and I'm not discounting ideology, as someone who thinks that gays should be able to get married, that those who have should help out those who have not, we should be more inclusive, and we had no business in Iraq, etc., I clearly differ from those who are more conservative. I'm also someone who is forced to never, never, never forget that he is black. I'm certainly... more... - Derrick
+10 Derrick - Joe
Derrick, I can't understand but I do empathize that being a minority is a particular burden in today's culture. I remember dealing harshly with a great guy in business a long time back and he decided it was because he was black. It had nothing to do with that. I got stuck between a rock and a hard place and he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was about money, not race.... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I think that's the point I'm trying to make, Jason. Things in this country have conditioned people of color to be consumed with race, and people who aren't minorities rarely give it a second thought. Until both groups understand this, there will always be some gulf. - Derrick
Derrick, I realize that. Let me tell you (for personal peace and understanding) that most white people are judging you for your education, performance, manner of speech, and a whole host of other things. Your race isn't in the top five, likely not in the top ten. If they mess you over it's because that's what white people do. There is an ethnic European culture, and part of it is race... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I understand that Jason, and realize that in a perfect world, that wouldn't be a factor. But, by the same token, race neutrality can backfire. I *am* black. I have had experiences as a black person in this country that have added to how and why I do things. To cut *that* out and ignore it completely is just as bad, in my experience, as it is to be a blatant racist. Resumes can only tell a person so much; you still have to conduct an interview. - Derrick
Derrick, just keep in mind that as a white man I can't possibly understand where you're coming from. It's always going to be alien. You say "I am black," and I say "so what?" I can only recognize the effect that status has as an intellectual exercise. I've never dealt with you based on race, just like I've never dealt with anyone based on race. So, it's much more relevant to me that we... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Which is my point. I can't just erase it from the factors of which I live by. Racism is a plague and I think we can both agree on that, but for me to reduce racial matters, that of my livelihood, to something like snake handlers in the mountains of Tennessee isn't something I just can just...do. But I hear you, and I am grateful for the dialogue. - Derrick
Derrick, I can recognize intellectually that it effects you personally. I realize that there are still a lot of racists out there. But, for you to deal with me based on what some racist did to you is like my wife dealing with me based on what some guy she dated in high school did. I realize it happens, but it's completely disconnected. Rahsheen's assertion that if I don't like Obama... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Derrick, BTW - my frustration is with Rahsheen's comments and not your comments. You're sounding pretty logical. Rahsheen's assertion that if I dislike Obama's politics I've got to be a bigot is infuriating. I'm not even so much arguing for me. I'm not really a big anti-Obama guy. I have a tad less frustration with Obama than I did with Bush. But, I just can't assign all political beliefs to race. It's too simplistic. - Jason Nunnelley
I can't speak for Rahsheen, and I'll say it again, things can be racial without being racist. I don't know why someone called you a bigot; I didn't call you one. - Derrick
As a retired teacher this whole event just shows me that teachers hands are tied. - kevin i mills
Does this only affect public schools, or is it an issue with the private institutions as well? - Kittyburgers
Wow. Over the top. - Rick Cogley
Lest we all think there was no outrage when President Bush the first spoke to students: http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion... - Craig Eddy
I didn't call anyone anything. Just for the record. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
+1 Rick. And to think this all started with the issue of a permission slip being signed. No wonder people in other countries look at all of this and say "WTF?". - Allan Besselink
@Craig Eddy: Thanks for pointing out that link. - Kittyburgers
Coach Rahsheen, I perceived your statements (in the other thread) to be quite knee-jerk, assumptive. You've clarified that you were only talking about "some," though I'm not sure how one falls into this category. I'd consider the number of people that dislike Obama's policies because of race to be a tiny number compared to those that take issue w/ his policies. - Jason Nunnelley
@Jason Nunnelley: I don't think any reasonable individual would disagree with that. The race issue would most likely be minimal. - Kittyburgers
Kittyburgers, unfortunately I think otherwise rational people do disagree with me. It's a personal experience I can't understand - nobody that has lived a life without the experience unique to people of color can really understand it. We can only recognize unique experiences and viewpoints we don't understand. To me (likely you too), race just isn't a big deal. To someone that has their... more... - Jason Nunnelley
You try to correct the viewpoint of someone who, as you've said, can only have an experience you haven't had? That's mighty wh.... nah, I'm not going to say it. - cecily
White of me? - Jason Nunnelley
I think injecting race where it doesn't already exist is a counterproductive viewpoint. I understand why it may develop in one's psyche. I don't understand it. But, I accept that people who tell me about this feeling are honest and telling me their sincere feelings. As we develop a deeper understanding of each other I'd like to think we develop a more correct interpretation of others' beliefs, even if we disagree with them. The question is, is there hope? - Jason Nunnelley
Sad + Pathetic!!!!!! + this is AMERICA!!??? WAKE THE HELL UP PEOPLE!!! I can't believe this Garbage is Happening in America of all places* It's a Bloody Disgrace!! Good Riddance to Bush + Brainwashed Flock NeoCon Taliban-like Religious Zealot MORONS!!! - Billy Warhol
I'm late to this, but I have to say it's far more stinky where Jason sits than where Cecily sits. Jason, you seem to ignore the fact that Cecily's school was going to force each family to document why each child didn't show up for the Reagans, while the schools of this day were forcing parents and children to provide documentation to hear Obama speak. Dissert was not permitted for Reagan. Dissent was the default for Obama. Pure, udder (spelling deliberate) fecal matter. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF

This is my parents property on fire in Big Tujunga Canyon.
As of Saturday my parent's home was still there when my dad left. He stayed on the roof with a hose fighting it by himself. The firefighters helped him fight it for a while. They used a pump to pump water from the swimming pool to fight it but eventually the firefighters gave up. The neighbors house burned down. My dad was able to save our house, at least as of Sat. afternoon. It may be gone now. He was going to try and hike back in on Saturday night in order to bypass the roadblock by the Sherriff, but wasn't able to get back in there. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

I think the house may be ok. Well see. On Sat. night when I talked to my mom she said that he'd been able to save the house fighting the fire from the roof. But a storage/garage type structure on the property burned down and 3 cars were lost as of Sat afternoon. The whole thing could be gone now though. - Thomas Hawk

they are all safe. my mom was in ventura giving a seminar and my dad stayed until the fire burned through the property on the canyon. There were still hot spots though that could have flared up. yeah. this is the worst fire since the fire that burned through there maybe in 1977 or so? I remember that one too. It was pretty bad. This one seems worse though. The other thing that's terrible are the floods that follow the fires the next winter. - Thomas Hawk
Scary things fires like these. Glad to hear your family's safe though - at the end of the day that's more important than the house. - John

I talked with my dad on the phone for the first time today. He seemed fine about it all. He said it was exciting actually. He was the only one there fighting the fire for a long time. He said it was really quiet except for sounds of the fire. He'd hear a tree fall and yell "timber." He was in pretty good spirits all things considered. He's pretty sure the house is saved and hopes that they might escort residents back in in the next few days sometimes in this part of Big Tujunga Canyon. - Thomas Hawk
I'm sorry to hear about this, but I'm glad everyone is okay! - Michael Fidler
It is a story all to familiar for us Australians and thankfully my family and I have never been caught up in it ourselves, but have come very close. My parents went back into their property yesterday afternoon. They were letting some residents back into Big Tujunga Canyon. The house survived but there's a lot of work still to do. I think I am going to try to rid myself of "Tweet" from my vocabulary - it is hereby "post" #twittersnottheonlysocialnetwork
Please, yes, no more Tweet as verb OR noun. Go generic. - Patrick LaForge
I've felt the same way since day one, but have been going along with the fad. I'm with you. - motownmutt
Can somebody humor me and explain why the negative reaction to "tweet" to a describe a post on Twitter? - Andre P. Siregar
It's just too damn cutesy-pie. Plus Twitter wants to trademark it, I've heard, which means we'd also have to capitalize it. Why create a word when English has perfectly adequate ones already? - Patrick LaForge
Andre, my reasoning: It ties you to one network. Most of my posts are sent to multiple networks. I own my content, not Twitter. "Tweet" is a culture specific to Twitter. - Jesse Stay
Not really so much a negative, but it's site-specific. Every where else I can think of on the internet, an update is a post, or a comment. Not that big a deal, really. Just a realistic eye to the future when twitter isn't the belle of the ball any more. - motownmutt
ill just XMPP it - Chris Duffy
Nothing wrong with using 'tweet' if you're just posting to Twitter. Otherwise, yes, it makes sense to say 'post.' - Herb Hernandez
Thanks :-) - Andre P. Siregar
I'm interested in Patrick's take, given his New York Times position. I've got no problem with "tweet". Language changes all the time. And "tweet" carries with it the connotations of the Twitter experience, something "post" does not. - Hutch Carpenter

Is Twitter Creating Monopolies? - http://techgeist.net/2009...
@louisgray hmm..Techgeist post doesn't show for me for some reason.. - Alex Schleber
Same thing here. - Dennis Jernberg
Bummed that I missed it! - Kathy Fitch
Overblown. Twitter is today's Internet Poster Child. Tomorrow it could be just another also-ran. It's also not difficult to imagine Twitter (or FF/Facebook) deciding to do the URL shortening by themselves, which would immediately condense the field from several competitors to two biggies and a few lingering also-rans. - Erik Schmidt
Nice post - thanks for sharing it Louis! - Jim Connolly
Twitter is creating a huge amount of hype in 5-10 cities around the world yet no one outside those cities sees any use in the service. What monopoly would it create? It doesn't provide anything original. - Richard A.
Richard: you have GOT to be joking, right? Everywhere I travel I hear about Twitter. It's not just being hyped in 5-10 cities. It's on Entertainment Tonight for gosh's sake. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I live deep in the english countryside - I have neighbours here who use Twitter. It's everywhere. - Jim Connolly
The Twitter url shortening "monopoly" is really quite insignificant compared to say a certain web browser, in the grand scheme of things internet. If you don't like Twitter, don't use it, it's not compulsory. - Gilbert Harding
Good post Holden, I especially liked: "We all know that Twitter has bigger fish to fry such as..., you know, keeping their site up." Priceless. As far as the URL shorteners are concerned, I've argued that FriendFeed either needs to give us click stats for ff.im pronto, or else allow users to go with other services such as bit.ly to gain stats. It is pretty much unconscionable for a... more... - Alex Schleber

The Friendfeedization Of Facebook - http://www.techcrunch.com/2008...
The Friendfeedization Of Facebook
"As Facebook continues to roll out the full version of its new user profiles, it’s becoming clear that their primary goal isn’t, as they said in May, to simply create a cleaner user experience and allow developers to have more meaningful engagement points with users. It’s more about highlighting new content relevant to the user and fostering conversations about that content. And the result is that the Facebook home page looks an awful lot like the exponentially smaller activity stream aggregation service called Friendfeed." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet
there is ONE thing Facebook cannot replicate from Friendfeed. Speed of execution. FriendFeed will always be better and will always be one step ahead - Ouriel Ohayon
facebook who? - Fred Grott
That would be the site with 60m monthly visitors Fred. - Jamie
Coming from the other side, I’d like to see the Facebookization of Friendfeed (without sucking that is). FF is a great place for content and discussion, but not so much for community and social networking. - Hao Chen
Facebook's largely self-contained, immersive "social" and "fun" walled garden works especially well for interpersonal relations, and the upcoming facelift improves on those same principles. I'm impressed. That said, it's too heavyweight for active group conversations. FF has far and away the most effective implementation of group discussions, especially around "the rest of the web". It's great to have both FB and FF, each optimized around their use cases. - Amir Gharaat
The only thing I'm sure of is that Facebook will be unable to recommend the same 9 persons to add as friends to everyone - so hopefully we will still be able to choose exactly who we want to talk to. - Svetlana Gladkova
Friendfeed = open; facebook = closed; this would be an area i'd be happy to see facebook copy - Alex Gawley
Facebook is boring as hell. - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas, LOL... I always crack up when I see, in any FB thread your "Facebook is boring". - Juan Pablo González
Friendfeed lays it all out as a stream of posts and comments. It's like reading a newspaper. Just my style. - david
Facebook has lost its mojo really fast, I winder if the same will happen to FriendFeed - João Almeida from twhirl
@Joao lost its mojo with who? The twittersphere? Facebook was doing just fine before and after they jumped on and off the bandwagon. According to FB, UUs and engagement are up every month. - Jamie
Almeida: yeah, Facebook is growing as fast as ever and tons of "normal people" swear by it. Just because us early-adopter-inside-the-techie-bubble are over here playing on FriendFeed, don't assume that everyone else is. 110 million are on Facebook, maybe more by now. When I went to Israel all I heard was "Facebook, Facebook, Facebook." Same with my niece and lots of others here in Silicon Valley. Also, its event calendar brings tons more people than others. - Robert Scoble
Communities are communities. - Andrew Feinberg
Typical conversation with Real World Friends: "So I saw this post on Friend Feed..." "What's that?" "It's this website where it aggregates everything you do on various social networks" "Social Networks? Like..." "Flickr, Twitter, Yelp..." (Blank Stares) "Websites like Facebook are social.." "OHHH FACEBOOK.. That's the best site ever. *blah blah blah" - George Smith
Alex Gawley: Seems that Facebook no longer will be closed. "This week facebook will also launch their Facebook Connect product, which is designed to let users get that data back out of Facebook." http://www.techcrunch.com/2008... - Alex Sauceda
but do you think the average FB user is going to use the "comment on news feed" feature? a quick scan of some of my heavy-user FB friends last week showed no comments on any news feed items, and then a couple days ago i noticed someone's status message was "I hate all these comment tags on facebook now"... - Trent Olson
LOL @ Friendfeedization - Bwana ☠
I love FF but all my non geeks friends and family are on Facebook. Seems that it works better for them. - Alex Sauceda
Keep in mind, that 18 months ago you could not have had this conversation with anyone who was not 1) in the SV echo chamber or 2) in college. Web services start small and some inflect to a larger community and some don't. - Christopher Sacca
My friends on FB go to Flickr for conversation. None of them are on FF. I add FF contacts in FB to view their bios. - Russellreno
Louis - Agreed but I think the reason is more that they're trying to do an even better job with targeted ads (to keep the price in check) ... ala GMail. I find my Facebook list growing from my activity on Friendfeed. Hmm - Charlie Anzman
Was the FriendFeed mini-feed on Facebook axed: no summary, just a note showing something was added? It's doing that for Feedheads too. Is this happening with others folks? - Blake N. Cooper
Jim: Thanks! Does that mean that my friends would need to change this on their end to see more than 1 line? I have a lot of my friends who will stick to the default (i.e. will be overwhelmed by process for changing) and most likely will not see the content of my Google Reader Shared Items and FriendFeed activity. Sucks if that's the case. Thanks again. - Blake N. Cooper
Jim: This is great, thanks! - Blake N. Cooper
Jim: Is that option retaining the setting - I have it set to one line, short and full, but the new items still seem to default to one line. - Richard Peat
Funny how one year later we are actually seeing the Facebookization of Friendfeed... - Jean-Marc Liotier

Friendfeed is no longer .. all that's left is the flick of the switch. - John Blanton
It's nice for the FF peeps. They'll see what it's like to deliver new features for a decent size user base. - mrshl
Mike: I wouldn't worry about FriendFeed. I see it as Facebook's R&D department now. We're the test bunnies for what 300 million people will get! :-) - Robert Scoble
Now Friendfeed will be able to go head to head with Google wave! So long as the team are allowed to lead from within Facebook how can this possibly be bad? - Ade Lack
I want a FB test bunny t-shirt ;) - Jeff (the メガマクダジ of FF)
Nice comments. Also looking forward to realtime search and 300M+ users ... watch that in realtime! My screen will melt I guess. - Peter van Teeseling
I'm only really sad because it completely breaks my on-line life. I'm excited for the FF team and for FB but that's only one aspect and I don't see how it can be merged. - James Myatt
I think it'll make fan pages even cooler. - Gus
Mark: can you verify that this is a real account somehow? Tell us something about what we did in Davos together that I didn't share. - Robert Scoble
Robert, the user name for Zuck misspells his name, just like he misspelled yours. - Louis Gray
Mark, if that is really you. Please don't let people on FB find users on FF. Some of us are looking for the anti-social web. Private groups and no friend requests from long lost classmates was a big plus over here. - Chip Ramsey
Username is "markzukerberg"? .. - Mads Kristiansen
Robert: from what I can tell most FF users do not share your enthusiasm or optimism. From what I can see FriendFeed team members will be absorbed into Facebook R&D, FriendFeed as a property will whither and most will cash out as soon as they can. Do you have some other information that you can share that supports your optimism? - Brian Sullivan

How does everyone know what's going to happen? I prefer Rob's tone of "what should happen" - fear vs possibility - Ankush Narula from iPhone
Really interesting perspective you provide here. I was thinking this whole time that this would hit Twitter hard, but I see now that Google might be the real target, because of the whole real-time search. Nonetheless, I love all the Google employees that are hoping facebook becomes more "open" in the process. Something tells me facebook doesn't care about being open, but being a... more... - Rahul Krishnakumar
Christopher: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... It clearly seems that facebook will use friendfeed to be a playground for future features. - Rahul Krishnakumar
Rahul: That's not encouraging. I don't see how you get that from that article. - Christopher A Carr
Wait I owe Scoble an apology. I read several places that he had a financial interest in Friend Feed. That information , if true, clouded my perception of his commentary of FF. If you believed that true, he comes across as a shill trying to protect his investment IMHO. In his blog post he denounces any financial connection. Now I feel stupid because good practices dictate that he would have disclosed such in his writings. I suck sorry Robert. - cheapsuits from iPhone
Hmmm - I keep my FB social, private, and mainly family. I keep FF public and work-oriented only. Will I need two accounts? Or just delicate messing about with privacy controls? I'm not looking forward to shifting - may FF last a long while still. FB is too busy, and FF is lightweight and gives me exactly what I want, with a much cleaner interface. Thanks very much Robert, your blog post is much appreciated! - Allyson Lister
cheapsuits: Robert has said 1,000 + times that he has no financial interest in ff. - Christopher A Carr
Robert, how can you say you don't get how FF users are sad and up in arms? FB's attitudes and culture are different enough for this to be a serious shock. In short, lots of people think FF=good, FB=bad, for better or worse. Your own list of cons is enough to get FF users up in arms. - Don Faulkner
Christopher I see it now. Easy to see what he said when it isn't filtered by FF haters. What more can I say then I suck? I surely am not going to kill myself over it. - cheapsuits from iPhone
Thrilled for Paul, but amused that FB's first big land grab is another biz that isn't monetized properly either! Arrogance or Ignorance? - Jan Simmonds
Jan, FF has some great technology and some great people. It's not about the service itself. - James Myatt
cheapsuits: I'm sure you are forgiven. ;-) - Christopher A Carr
Here's why people are up in arms: I think it's in the company's best interests to keep the properties existing separately ... especially since like you said, it's a geekier community on FF. Why not integrate the cool *features* FF has within Facebook but keep friendfeed.com as-is? - Tamar Weinberg
I agree this is more of a play against Google. I think eventually Twitter and Facebook will team up more to provide real time streams of user updates between the two systems. I wonder if the first step is using FF for the collection of these streams and the next step is acquiring the method of pushing these streams or content. - CodeSamurai
FF = Facebook Labs - Andrew
I like the separate sites and maybe they will allow both options, Facebook is too busy for me and Friend Feed cuts to the chase and I hope we don't see "FaceFeed" with everything combined without options. - MedicalQuack
They got some talented people at FriendFeed. - Kenneth Yeh

Does anyone "really" know how to use social media? - David Damore
lol, that's hilarious! - Melissa Cherry
Looks like Scoble beat me on getting the first comment ;) - David Damore
It's the noobs like Guy who ruin it for the rest of us. :) - Chris Foley
David - That's probably because you don't know how to use social media! ;-) - Herb Hernandez
How do you even know that? You have almost 155K followers. How do you track who comes and goes, let alone their reason? - Chris Spizzirri
Chris: ever hear of @replies? I see everything you say about me. - Robert Scoble
Maybe you were really annoying and just posted link after link after link after link. Are YOU the example of what's correct in the world of social media? Is someone with 18 followers somehow wrong> - Tyler Hurst
@Herb Hernandez Ouch ;) ;) - David Damore
Scoble: Of course I've heard of @replies. Seems condescending for you to ask. Either way, Guy didn't say that's how he knew, so I asked rather than assumed. - Chris Spizzirri
I personally AM willing to assume that Guy knows about @replies. Just saying... - Chris Foley
Of course he does. We all do. But discounting someone with a limited number of followers smacks of condescension. Nice attitude. - Tyler Hurst
Tyler: sorry, but sometimes that attitude is correct. Why does everyone's opinion count equally? And here it didn't seem to be condescension, but rather a blowback. Anyone who says they are unfollowing is being a jerk. Just unfollow quietly. Someone who says they are unfollowing intends to injure and SHOULD be met with condescension. - Robert Scoble
Not only does Guy know how to use Social Media, so do the people who tweet for him! - Garin Kilpatrick
Garin: that actually was Guy. When his staff tweets for him they include their initials after the Tweet. - Robert Scoble
Here's an interesting argument: I agree mostly with Scoble here, but there is a communication issue in business today. Most people, when faced with a "bad" experience, they will simply discontinue patronizing that business. They will then tell all of their friends about the bad experience. This behavior creates a churn that's very difficult to track and understand. I personally love any... more... - Chris Foley
Robert - I agree with you in part. I hate people who announce they are unfollowing, but also can't stand people who then complain about that same thing. Guy did the near equivalent of what the first person did. Shouldn't we expect more from you popular kids? - Tyler Hurst
Tyler: no, we're human and we like lashing back just as much as anyone else does. - Robert Scoble
Robert - okay, but we still can and should hold people like you, guy, brogan and others to a higher standard. It's just part of leading the charge. - Tyler Hurst
Should we be thrusting the mantle of "role model" on these guys because they were here first, and caught fire? - Chris Foley
Chris - oh heck no. Not role model. I don't think we should aspire to BE them, but we should expect more from them. - Tyler Hurst
Chris: people with a big audience do have a bigger responsibility, yes. But then if we stop taking risks and stop being human we get boring and then we'll do no one any good. Personally Guy is making a point tonight. Those on Twitter are often full of crap and who said that people who are full of crap should be listened to, or engaged with, or even coddled? Anyway, I'm off to bed. - Robert Scoble
um, I just wanted to Tweet to Guy that we're all talking about him over on his FriendFeed account. See ya! - Robert Scoble
And that last statement is why most of us don't have to worry about Scoble fading out or becoming irrelevant. Nice. - Tyler Hurst
Scoble, I don't expect anything more from you because you have a larger audience, but I do recognize (as you obviously also do) that you have a bigger opportunity for positive (or negative) impact. I like my leaders as real as can be, and that includes the occasional barking. Keep taking risks, and thanks to you and Guy for having your necks out there. - Chris Foley
Thats amazing, saying that to guy with 154,953 Twitter followers - Luis Torres
Hmmm. interesting conversation here. So, what really is Guy' problem? someone unfollowing him, or someone with ONLY 18 followers unfollowing him? seems to be the latter! I like how @scobelizer just generalized everyone on twitter as full of crap. Amazing!!! - Ramesh Prabhu
Ramesh - I'm mostly full of crap. I have 2300ish followers. Does that make me important at all? - Tyler Hurst
Luis - who cares about followers? - Tyler Hurst
Scoble: I meant you were being condescending to me by asking if I knew about @replies. I expect Guys know about them also. Incidentally, your opinion (or the opinion of the other elites) is no better than anyone else's. Just because someone only has 18 followers doesn't mean they deserve your condescension, nor do they deserve it if they choose to announce the reason for their decision... more... - Chris Spizzirri
That'll teach ya ;) - Cookenstein
Chris Spizzirri, don't you think you're taking that comment a little bit personally? What Scoble said to you seemed a bit tongue in cheek to me. But to you it was condescending, which means he's an a-hole (your words.) That's a pretty big character judgement made from one 4 word sentence. - Chris Foley
and.... crickets from Scoble. Typical. - Chris Spizzirri
Chris: I am potty training my two year old and responding to other things than your condescension. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I love how someone with a billion followers on twitter asks how to follow on FriendFeed :) - Robert Higgins
Spizzirri - Hey, thanks for taking over the biggest douchebag in the thread from me! Some ppl's opinions ARE less important than others. - Tyler Hurst
brush it off - you're the man! - shaun mclane
Chris Foley, no the character judgement was not made from a 4 word sentence, but from the entire thread, and who do you think is making the character judgment here? who's making the assumption that someone with only 18 followers knows nothing? who's making the assumption that no on on twitter knows diddly squat? Gimme a break! - Ramesh Prabhu
Scoble: Try paying attention to your kid and ignore the internets for a minute. OK? Also, try being less arrogant. - Chris Spizzirri
@Chris Foley: No I don't. He was being condescending. Read the whole thread. - Chris Spizzirri
It's so cute that Spizzirri gets so mad at Scoble. - Tyler Hurst
@Tyler: You're welcome, and you've proven your own point! Well done! - Chris Spizzirri
@Tyler: What's it like being a Scoble fanboy? - Chris Spizzirri
I did read the whole thread (Chris Spizzirri and Remesh Prabhu). I've been in since the 5th comment. I don't see people being condescending here. I see people airing their opinions. I also see you and Remesh putting words into the mouths of others. If I disagree with you, am I also condescending? Chris Spizzirri seems to me to be looking for a fight here, he's now lashing out and... more... - Chris Foley
@Chris - WTF are you talking about? Now you're going after me? Man, you're a dick! - Tyler Hurst
I don't like being condescended to, that's what's under my skin. How is Scoble asking me if I've ever "heard of @replies" not condescending? If I'm on FF, it's safe to assume I know about and understand Twitter. Moreover, as I pointed out, Guy never said he knew from an @reply--Scoble assumed that. I was just asking a question, but got his smarmy reply. - Chris Spizzirri
It takes arrogance to tell me to stop being arrogant. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
@Tyler - "It's so cute that Spizzirri gets so mad at Scoble" and "Spizzirri - Hey, thanks for taking over the biggest douchebag in the thread from me! Some ppl's opinions ARE less important than others." How again are you surprised that I don't like you? - Chris Spizzirri
Chris, we're clearly very different guys here. If Scoble ribs me, I'm going to rib him back. I'm not going to get all bent out of shape, and get angry, and in getting angry, become a bigger jerk in retaliation than he was being in the first place. When I see you getting all pissed of because of some opinion that a stranger has, I have to wonder what is wrong with you, not wrong with that stranger and his silly opinion. - Chris Foley
Stop being arrogant, Robert Scoble! No? Alright. You can stay as you are. - Jason Huebel
@Scoble: "It takes arrogance to tell me to stop being arrogant." I don't agree. How do you figure? - Chris Spizzirri
Um @Chris, hate to break it to you, but Scoble's first comment wasn't condescending toward you, he was trying to make a point. I never said I was surprised, I just said you were a dick. Thanks for helping degrade the conversation! - Tyler Hurst
people are people so why should it be you and i should get along so awfully - Robert Higgins
It takes arrogance to disagree with someone who is arrogant too. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I disagree with that statement :) - Chris Saad
Chris Tyler is right. You are overreacting to my prod. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Could be that the person with only 18 followers has a kind of native wisdom we all might learn something from, hey? ;-) - Kathy Fitch
Scoble seems to be in a bunch of flamewars and arguments lately, like, within the last month. I think it's all a big experiment. - Eric Florenzano
@Chris Foley: Fair enough, but things that Scoble says get under my skin more than someone else because of his stature. I think his comment was rude. If you had said that to me I likely wouldn't have paid any mind, but when Scoble treats people like that it's different. Whether he likes it or not, he's made himself an ambassador here, and wisecracks to newcomers aren't very diplomatic.... more... - Chris Spizzirri
Yawn. All this over someone unfollowing Guy. - Rick Cogley
You started it by not understanding how I could see everything said about me. That demonstrated you haven't learned about how @ replies work. That is all. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
@Scoble: "It takes arrogance to disagree with someone who is arrogant too." You've just restated what you said before, but you haven't explained. I understand what you are saying: I must be arrogant to say that you are. What's the basis for your claim: "It takes one to know one"? Do you have something more substantial? - Chris Spizzirri
@Chris Spizzirri. Thanks for your last explanation. I appreciate that kind of straight communication. I find that a lot more productive than when we resort to finger pointing and name calling. I also don't disagree with you there. - Chris Foley
Chris: don't you get I am just poking you? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Why don't boy fights ever involve anything interesting, like jello or something. Sigh. - Kathy Fitch
2 X Chris UFFFFFFFF - Johni Fisher
@Tyler - Pretty sure the sentence "Now you're going after me?" indicates surprise, but thanks for calling me a dick without provocation. Boy, this is my first real foray into a FF conversation, and it sure seems like mob mentality dominates. - Chris Spizzirri
Kathy: those are on my pay-per-view channel. Chris: geesh, two people are now a mob? And +I+ am arrogant? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Whipped cream could also work. - Kathy Fitch
No @Chris, you just don't understand how to participate in a threaded conversation with multiple people. It's not personal until you make it. Learn to banter. Learn to see beyond the literal definition. LIGHTEN UP. @kathy, how about something manly, like caramel? - Tyler Hurst
I dunno, Robert, some things just can't be purchased, but must emerge naturally. Or so I think. - Kathy Fitch
But I like red jello. Just FYI. - Kathy Fitch
As it happens, caramel could totally work. Is butterscotch manly? It does have "scotch" in it. - Kathy Fitch
Okay, the value of this thread has petered out for me. Thanks all for sticking with it. And Kathy, thanks for making me hungry. - Chris Foley
@Foley did you say you're UNFOLLOWING our conversation? The other @Chris might see that as condescending. Please apologize. - Tyler Hurst
@Scoble - again with the condescension. I know how @ replies work. I already said that. Guy didn't say that's how he knew, so I asked how he knew. You started it by assuming it was via @ reply. I sure hope this is an experiment of your's (as someone suggested above), and that you're not really this much of a jerk to people who disagree with you. I've had a boat load of fun here in FF... more... - Chris Spizzirri
Any time, Chris. Robert, I suggest posting a sample on B43. That would go viral, for sure. - Kathy Fitch
@Chris, if your friends are anything like you, we'll all be sure to ridicule them. - Tyler Hurst
Spizzirri: I looked again at this thread and all I see is YOUR condescension. Geesh. I have explained what I meant and you just turned up the heat hotter. Why? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Alright, I'm at a disadvantage, because FF stops updating the thread and I miss out on replies while I'm typing. Replies that would be enlightening. @Scoble - maybe I was being too sensitive, but you should be more aware of how the things you write are interpreted. Sarcasm is the most difficult thing to convey in writing and is prone to misinterpretation. I didn't come here to get in a... more... - Chris Spizzirri
Chris: I have no idea whether you are a newbie or not. If you are met with an arrogant (to you) reply the RIGHT answer is to ask questions and explain yourself, not to start throwing bombs. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Ryo: hint. Guy was making a bigger point than the number of followers. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
you are the leper of social media... mmmm (where's the savior?) - Jeffrey T. Sooey
It depends on your definition of 'use', I suppose. - Will Higgins™
@Scoble- I did ask questions and explain myself. How arrogant of you to tell me what the "RIGHT answer" is despite constantly saying 'no one is a social media expert.' I guess you've decide you are now, huh? I have a right to say I thought your reply was rude. What gives you the right to tell me how to interact with ppl here? This is no different than a conversation in person, and I can... more... - Chris Spizzirri
Spizzirri... When an argument flares up, the wise man quenches it with silence. @scoble is prodding you, and not going to be silent. How about you? I know I am ;) - Ramesh Prabhu
No jello, yet? (Drumming fingers and yawning.) - Kathy Fitch
Kathy I just blocked that dude so we can bring out the jello. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
@Ramesh - I'm evidently not very wise, but I'm going to take your advice. I think I'm guilty of assuming that Scoble would be better than an average person because he's in a position of prominence. That's my mistake. I apologize for my faulty assumption and for ruining this thread. Good night. - Chris Spizzirri
He blocked me. What a jerk. I hope this is a lesson to anyone as naive as I was 2 hours ago--Scoble, at least, feels entitled in this space to your deference. Be wary of questioning him or anything he says. - Chris Spizzirri
lolwut - Rodfather
Rodfather: what flavor of jello would you like to throw at me? I am throwing lime. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Who are you exactly ? Are you familiar with Twitter, FF and other ICQ ? :-) - Pierre-Olivier Carles
Yay--no orange, that's all I ask. It's a childhood thing--long and painful story. Suffice it to say that it would utterly destroy the moment. Lime, though, is a good thing. - Kathy Fitch
If I had jello, I'd be nom'ing it right now. Mandarin orange jello sounds good right now. - Rodfather
Rodfather: that is why I picked lime. I don't like that flavor and would rather throw it. By the way, I have blocked that Chris dude to save him the pain of having to deal with me. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Always someone who insists on orange. I'm wounded to the very core. - Kathy Fitch
Grinning and throwing orange jello at Rodfather. - Kathy Fitch
I question @Scoble's decision to waste perfectly good lime jello. @kathy, i have cherry. FIGHT! - Tyler Hurst
I just utterly approve of edible weaponry. - Kathy Fitch
Wow! This thread just became a microcosmic example of why there will always be social and political factions! One seemingly humorous (and innocent) comment is attributed with all sorts of vile motivations, and then those supposed motivations are constructed into a "villain" born of their own attitude, and then the "villain" manufactured by their own imagination is in turn attacked because they don't like the image they're projecting onto him/her/it ... amazing, just amazing! *shakes head and walks away* - Mark "DerBingle" J

I think there is some danger of flooding the zone with tweets. Think about it from a person following just a small handful of people on twitter. If one person is supplying 95% of the tweets they get, it's likely to be really frustrating. - Trent Hamm

Smugmug ticks me off, though--cause not *all* things should be pro. Take pics at the kids' ballgame? Just send those suckers around. Now, folks put the pix up for sale. Sheesh. - Kathy Fitch

My 15-year-old self would be mortified at how much I truly enjoy talking to my parents on the phone.
Robert Scoble
I'm now convinced because of this http://www.pcworld.com/article... that PC World really doesn't know what it's talking about. More:
1. A Tablet does not need to lie flat. - Robert Scoble
2. An Apple Tablet would find a HUGE market just waiting. Our coffee tables. - Robert Scoble
3. There are a huge number of people who will buy ANYTHING Apple puts its name on. Well, OK, Apple TV proved that isn't quite true. - Robert Scoble
4. If hosting a virtual keyboard takes too much real estate on a 10 inch display, I guess they didn't see the iPhone. - Robert Scoble
and if only there were molds that could make these things fit us perfectly, like a blackberry hand mold, would rock the available accessories.... - Liza
5. I used to own a tablet, made by NEC. It was my favorite computer. Bill Gates bought 400 of them to give to his closest friends, too. It was really awesome, nice and thin, easy to carry around. - Robert Scoble
6. I guess he didn't see that the Amazon Kindle is pretty close to a tablet and works fine. - Robert Scoble
7. I want a computer I want watch TV with and interact with while watching TV. A Tablet is BETTER than a laptop in that mode. - Robert Scoble
Urban legend is that the NO buttons were a decision that was so important that he does not wear buttons - mock turtle...But surely his jeans have a button, and his car, and other items.... - Liza
8. Artists actually don't like Tablet PCs. Why? Not enough screen realestate. He's right there, but for the wrong reasons. - Robert Scoble
9. Note taking in class? I dare you to copy a chemical molecule in text on a keyboard, or write an advanced mathematical formula without a pen. Of course, if this writer really wanted to make a good point, just use pencil and paper and take a picture of that with your iPhone. - Robert Scoble
good points, Robert. Form factor and software functions / features are related, but can can really take products in different directions. - Lora Heiny
(Disclosure: Lora works on Microsoft's Tablet PC team). - Robert Scoble
Their definition of "tablet" is way too restrictive. A Kindle IS a tablet. A tablet, in my opinion, simply means a computing device with the capacity for input while in a two-dimensional format. - Trent Hamm
My HP-TX2 is the best computer I've ever owned. Evernote on this baby is what's getting me through my Linear Algebra class this semester. Also, Civilization 4 is awesome in tablet mode. - Scott Ohlemacher
robert - apple tv kicks arse, provided you install boxee on it. - Terry O'Fee
Terry: I totally agree. - Robert Scoble
My thought: lets see this thing before we criticize it. It's an Apple tablet after all. I know a certain phone that was criticized for being a me-too phone as well. - Ryan Massie
Agree except for a few things. For 7, it's still easier to have a laptop form factor sitting in your lap instead of having to hold it with a slate. For 9, Sorry but people won't be inking notes in class with their finger on a capacitive touch screen. What's missing is the active tablet and ink/character recognition that doesn't take up a lot of resources. - Rodfather
Ryan: all good products have haters. - Robert Scoble
Rodfather: absolutely disagree. Reading or getting comfortable on a couch is much easier with a Tablet. Oh, and let's not forget sitting in coach seats in planes!!! - Robert Scoble
I kind of ripped into him on mashable: http://mashable.com/2009... - Ben Parr
i still really wish they'd make a 10 inch MB, though. they must know a smaller version would sell well, regardless of price.. - Terry O'Fee
Ben: I missed that totally but glad great minds think alike. - Robert Scoble
(Update: Last fiscal year I worked on an education project and some tangential things, like the Tablet Accessibility Imagine Cup award. Still find Touch & Tablet PC future concepts really intriguing. On to new things in the next few weeks :) ) - Lora Heiny
Looks like someone's trying to fill Dvoraks hater pants. - Joshua Schnell
It's probably because Mashable tweets are getting lost in the cloud. Twitter's experiencing a slowdown. - Ben Parr
Robert, whatever floats your boat. For me, it gets tiring and hot having to hold a slate all the time. I like having my hands free. - Rodfather
Rodfather: keep in mind that I own three laptops and my wife owns one and my son owns one. So this would be IN ADDITION to a laptop, not as a replacement for. - Robert Scoble
I suspect the iTablet is actually going to be much like the HP TX2, likely running OS X with some mobile features (like note taking / a program like One Note) and the capacity to read books from the iTunes store - or possibly functioning as a Kindle. - Trent Hamm
Yes, that's fine. I'm just pointing out it's easier for me to couch surf with a laptop form factor. If both are actually released, I'll be grabbing both but who knows what their use will be for. - Rodfather
I see the potential in a virtual keyboard that has been missed up to this point by everyone. Allow the users to program the "keys" with shortcuts and such. Then the real estate being "lost" to the kb suddenly becomes productive and valuable. Other points were generally spot on, Robert except #1- whether it has to or not- other than flat how else is a tablet going to lay? Little pop-out legs? - Alyx
I think this is just an attempt to kill the Kindle and have some other cool features that take on netbooks. It will all depend on how it's priced. - Mark Juleen
Rodfather & Robert: one big issue you're pointing out is definition that media is using vs common use of words we're used to, ex. tablet, slate. These are form factor biased. iPod Touch, iPhone, Kindle -- all very successful slates. Specialty PCs with multitouch, handwriting, etc. like the HP TouchSmart PC or a Motion Computing slate are similar form factors and very different in size.... more... - Lora Heiny
I doubt this Tablet will have any inking capabilities at all and it won't matter. It's all about consuming not creating with the possible exception of video/audio/etc.... - Warner Crocker
And the PCWorld article was just trash. - Warner Crocker
I think an Apple tablet would be kinda neat, and watching movies on a tablet can be ok, but not always as nice as a regular laptop or even netbook (depends on how you're sitting/laying). I think though that not having a full-fledged OS X running on it will severely limit its potential... - Jan Ole Peek
Yes, the article was crap - Rodfather
Are they a bit biased ?? - Cookenstein
I wonder what the hardware will be .. will it run photoshop? if so there's a winner - Dylan Richardson
Love point number 9 - Gustavo Gomez
Dylan, Photoshop on a 10" screen isn't that amazing. Plus the hardware would have to be faster than my Dell Mini 10v with 2gb of ram to do anything more than basic photoshop stuff. - Jan Ole Peek
I'm not so sure this thing will be a hit. Who's the audience for this device? Current Mac/iPhone users? They own a Mac and an iPhone now they're going to buy a tablet...for what reason? What can they do on the tablet they can't do on their Mac's? Handwriting recognition...unlikely, used as a video/music/TV player...possibly, but this can already be done without needing another device,... more... - Kenny
They also missed the point that Apple wouldn't want OSX on this. They like controlling the platform and limiting the available apps. The buzz for the Crunchpad is a pretty good indicator that a lot of people would like these, at least early adopters. The mass market may not 'get' it yet, but they're just now getting full use of the iPods and iPhones they bought in the last year. - Jon Adair
I would never bet against anything that Says "Apple". But actually http://itablet.com is promoting Vista Tablets... - Robert Higgins
PC World vastly overlooked the gaming market as well. As a hand-held device with a larger screen, I am sure developers are drooling at the opportunity of an entirely new market for games. Larger screens open one set of flood gates and clouds knock down the dam. I would wager very few of us can conceptualize the possibilities of such a market in 3 years. - thestaticfrost
I'm with Kenny. I don't see it, yet. Usually Apple goes into a market to completely dominate. I don't see it here.., yet. Which devices will it try to take over? Netbooks, GPS nav devices, media-players, ebook readers, portable gaming devices? Take on the vertical markets and replace all the tablets in hospitals with this? No clue. - Rodfather
thestaticfrost - Agreed, a gaming device has some potential. - Kenny
Rodfather: there is one place in your home that NO ONE dominates yet: your coffee table. Another? Your kitchen counter. Apple could make a neat market by going after JUST those two places. - Robert Scoble
Who's got room on the kitchen counter? - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Robert, perhaps. I don't see Apple making a huge hit with that segment. They usually go in to dominate. We're talking about a 3rd or 4th device now after a laptop, netbook, and smartphone. For me, I don't spend that much time in the kitchen. I wouldn't buy a whole new device for the bathroom or to replace my clock radio either. - Rodfather
Rodfather: Apple rarely goes into dominate. They haven't dominated cell phones yet, gaining only a few percent of market share so far. But what they DO dominate is mindshare. Here Apple could very cleanly dominate in both places once again. You might not spend that much time in the kitchen, but a lot of people do. - Robert Scoble
C'mon Rodfather, you have to admit, an Apple Tablet, whatever it turns out to be would be a great Stall Surfing device. :) - Warner Crocker
I'll just say this, since wireless became ubiquitous, I take my laptop into the kitchen all the time. I store recipes on delicious or other websites, and I just pull them up, instead of printing them out and taping them to the cabinet door like I used to. The iMac is too big for our tiny kitchen, so I'd be all over an OS X tablet. - ha3rvey (just a friend)
I'm sure it'll be fantastic and I would get one, and yes Warner, I would use it on the can. :) I just don't understand the market they are going for. From what I know now, I don't see it having the same impact as an iPhone, iPod Touch, or a MacBook. - Rodfather
Robert Higgins - after looking at your link for iTablet.com the kitchen is what came to my mind. Robert - It could have some cool uses there but I'm still not sure there is much of a market for this type of device. But having this type of device in the kitch could be kinda cool. Imagine it sitting there and using the touch screen to scroll on web sites, use it to hold recipes, integrate... more... - Kenny
Here's the real question I have about all of these new slates -- Can I get my typical right-click functionalities? And if so, how? Because I use the heck out of "Copy Link Location" and "Open in New Tab". - Miss Elle
Most tablets if they have a digitzer stylus pen will have a button on it to hold down for right-clicking. - Jan Ole Peek
Miss Elle - if it's a touch screen you would most likely just 2 finger tap for the right click functionality, just like you do know on Mac laptops - Kenny
I want a coffee table / kitchen counter tablet asap!! Must be simple and elegant as my iPhone; designed for web browsing. - Susan Beebe from BuddyFeed
Most likely, hold down to register a right-click. That's how it works for touchscreens on Windows Tablet ed, Vista, & 7. Holding down on a link/image in Safari on the iPhone also gives you a menu. - Rodfather
This article reminds me of Steve Ballmer laughing at the iPhone for not having a physical keyboard. - Dennis Chiuten
IF that device shipped tomorrow, and assuming for this discussion it's not a PoS, my only decision is how many rooms would have one on the wall this year and how many would I wait for the next revision. Why do people think laps & tables are to only two places this would be used? I want my first one on the wall in my bath/dressing room; so I can glance at it from the shower and while getting dressed to get the morning news, weather, stocks, Tweets, etc, etc, etc ... standing & walking around. - Don Strickland
The guy (Michael Scalisi) who wrote the article for PC World is an IT Manager from somewhere, he isn't clued in to how such a device would/could be used - just ignore it! - Geer
As someone else mentioned, just like the iPhone, I think there is no way to surmise what an Apple tablet will be - they probably won't call it a tablet. And most underestimate the marketing prowess of Apple. I can see an extension of the "we've got an app for that" ads already. - PXLated
An apple tablet with what sort of touch interface? If like iPhone, from an artist's point of view, not good. I like doing graphics/cartoons on digital devices, but windows mobile was always too small to draw really big illos with, though spot cartoons it wasn't bad. Would LOVE an Apple tablet I could use a stylus with. And yes, there's a huge market for one. You wouldn't have to squint or squeeze to read a whole news item. - George Hall (Australia)
Guess if I had a choice, though...if a crunchpad had the ability to do art/graphics with a stylus and an apple tablet didn't, I'd buy the crunchpad instead...though I'd still be eyeing the Apple tablet for a bit later... - George Hall (Australia)
I want my Newton 2100 back but with web capabilities and a color screen. - Mark Davidson from BuddyFeed
Apple's device is out there to destroy the netbook, the Kindle, and the legal pad. That's a pretty sweet target imo. - Trent Hamm
i still think they should make a small form macbook. the tablet will be interesting and maybe very good, but theres people out there who want some reliable small netbooks, laptops, whatever you want to call it. - Terry O'Fee
Have to say I don't get the whole idea of the ITablet/IFoleo. A netbook - Yes. For me this back to the days of one device for calling, one device for viewing, one device for typing. I am sure there would be a nitch for it like Robert watching TV on it, but It would hardly be the innovative design that Apple is known for. I can see it now, like a nightmare, People walking around in the streets with giant Iphones. Apple, please don't make my nightmare come true - Asgeir
By definition, a tablet does need to lie flat. But otherwise agreed. - xero
Xero: I disagree. A tablet needs to be able to be configured in some fashion to be flat, but it does not need to be flat, period. Take HP's excellent TX-2 - it's a tablet, clearly, but it's also got a keyboard and with a quick rotation, it serves as a laptop. - Trent Hamm
For the purposes of writing upon the tablet's screen, a tablet needs to be able to lie flat on a flat work surface such as a table or desk in order for it to actually be used like a tablet of paper, a notebook, a clipboard, which is what it is replacing. Just like any other laptop/notebook computer, it is ergonomically ignorant to assume it can lie in ones lap or cradled in ones arm for... more... - xero
O, Robert, say it isn't so?! What will I offer my guests for light water closet reading? :) - Melanie Reed
Geer: I'm totally with you on your comment about the author. Apparently, it's become really easy to write for PCWorld now. You don't need to know how to write, just be an in the tech biz at some level with some hair-brained story about a rumored product's future failure. Bizarre. - Paul Salzman
Mo Kargas
How shit that's awesome. - Matt Ruiz
And risky as hell - Mo Kargas
that was bad ass... - J. Abdul-Qahhar
huh? what? was this in a real game? - .LAG liked that
Sometimes you just have to be awesome. Imagine, being a soccer player. Wandering around all day, kicking a ball to and fro, for no particular reason. Every so often, you fall down, again for no particular reason. You do this year after year. Then one day you decide, 'ya know what, this is boring'. And then a ball comes floating your way... what do you do... - Will Higgins™
He is lucky it worked. Wouldnt have been real popular otherwise. What a team player! - Matt G
I call fake - Andre P. Siregar
I think he was playing for Columbia from memory and its real. I shouldnt trust my memory though from experience. - Matt G
fake? no, that was a real, televised match. - Cee Bee
Really? Did he do that on purpose or was he only lucky his foot deflected the ball? If I were the coach I'd chew out the guy for showboating where so much was on the line. Soccer is a very low-scoring game - Andre P. Siregar
Must be trying out for the third movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Kevin Sablan
not a fake thats Rene Higuita possibly the best goalie Colombia ever had, definitely their best goalie of last 30 years. he was known for these types of antics which is why they called him 'el loco'. also one of the few goalies in history to actually score a goal. he was also known for coming out of his area and dominate attacking forwards and midfielders. he was nuts and lots fun to watch. later in his career he tested positive for cocaine. - Carlos Ayala
@Carlos, do you remember Roger Milla at 1990? :)) I think he has never been good as a goalkeeper but his style is really eye-pleasing. - Oğuz Serdar
that was "The Scorpion kick".. Rene Higuita was really crazy.. - Cesar Sanchez
Bit of a show-off, methinks, but fun to watch. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
another scorpion kick by Higuita http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Cesar Sanchez
That's Higuita for ya... I think this was a World Cup match too. - Nikhil Dandekar
looks like he was watching too much of Tsubasa - Rohit
it wasn't WC match. it was a friendly match at Wembley. - Oğuz Serdar
it's not fake. That was off-side and he knew it. The guy rocks though .) - bora "head" basman
Even if someone was offside, surely that ball in was more likely to go in the net then near a player! - Will Higgins™
Scorpion style. Eeeeeeeeeeee - Rodfather
Plus on the Video, it's amazing how far he returns this ball. Hardly a wimpy kick. - Brent - Loving Life
Yep, this was during the World Championships wasn't it? The Columbians didn't reach the finals, I remember and the goalie was internationally blamed for it. But he made the games very attractive to watch. - Ton Zijp
I watched this match. Note the whistle had already been blown so if he missed it and went in it wouldn't have counted but nevertheless it was a spectacular 'scorpion' kick. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

Bu ne özgüven yarabbim. Sonuç ne olursa olsun hiç bir futbolcunun böyle bir risk alma lüksü olmamalı... - nihat solmaz
NTV'de bir futbol belgeselinde izlemiştim bunu ve adamla yaptıkları röportajda jimastik alanında uzun yıllar çalıştığını antremanlı olduğunu söylüyordu :) - Göksel Şirin
Would it be that impressive if he'd stuffed it up? - Alistair (alpinefolk)
This was against England, ah the good times ha - Joe Dawson
HAX! - k00pa
oh! Higuita. - sG
Totally insanely amazing. - Sarah Lane
That was so unnecessarily...but so awesome. - Cassidy

How to cook corn

The right way. The only way. - Admiral Anika
I do this in the oven sometimes, too. - ha3rvey (just a friend)
Except you should ALWAYS keep the lid closed! Personally I like to peel the corn, wrap it in foil with a little salt and butter. Yummy! - Robert Scoble
On a really radical day, I'll shuck it and grill it. Then I'll serve it with parmesan cheese, mayo, lemon pepper, lime, and chili powder. All the toppings they use for street corn. - ha3rvey (just a friend)
I just like to throw it in the coals. Best when it's picked that day. - Will Higgins™
No love for boiling? :-( - Mark Trapp
We always boil it, it is teh delicious - Geoff Schultz
Soak them in water first? - Andrew Smith
Will- I love when my dad does that! I usually don't even butter and salt it because it's so good! - Heather
I marvel at how life was before everybody realized how to do corn right. - Wirehead
i haven't tested out my korn shell recipe, but here it is (friendfeed has issue w/ line breaks): #!/usr/bin/ksh # a quick recipe to cook korn. needs more robust conditioning butter code and taste checks. minute=`date -u '+%M'` cooktime=0 print -n "set how many minutes to cook this korn: ";read cooktime; print "". if [[ $cooktime -gt 0 ]] && [[$cooktime -lt 30]];then end_minute=`expr... more... - sɹǝɥʇɐǝɟʞɔɐןq
We did this over a wood fire in a fire pit while camping in Big Sur on Thursday. I cooked it perfectly, if I do say so myself. So delicious. - Stephen Mack from iPhone
