It seems as if the main problem with most people in the examples shown is their forehead is too short or too narrow. Wonder if there's a subtle clue that big brains are beautiful there! :)
- Lindsay
@Jason - that's an interesting concept. Would you be more likely to trust the girl on the left or right? Would you be more likely to talk to either one of them at a party (or more intimidated by either one?).
- Lindsay
Notice that for all the women they soften the jaw, while squaring it for men. Everyone also gets a slightly thinner face and upturned almost smiling lips.
- FFing Enigma
@SB yeah and the forehead adjustment... almost like there is a triangle with the forehead at the point and they flip it so the chin is the bottom of the triangle... weird.
- Lindsay
They are different women! Blame Paul! : )
- Erhan Erdoğan
Lindsay: whenever sketching generic faces, the face starts as an inverted triangle and the eyes appear a third of the way down from the top of the forehead; lips and nose appear below and above (respectively) a line 1/3 up from the chin. Looks like these pictures are rearranged to meet that particular school of drawing.

The artist proportions were laid out by the Greeks as the perfect human, that's not being used here. This beautification engine, I think, builds on top of a previous study where some students tried to mathematically identify attractiveness. They had participants rate the attractiveness of head shots from yearbooks. What they found was there was a high correlation b/w the geometrically "average" face and high attraction. That "average" is based on the proportions of the di

stances between the individual elements of the face and their relative sizes. IIRC the software adjusts elements so they statistically/geometrically complement each other. It's not actually working toward a golden set of proportions, but a set of proportions appropriate for the individual as defined by the masses. I wouldn't think of it as "facial discrimination" so much as "deviation from ones potential".

(19 photos) Today our four adorable kittens are having their little operations and then they come back to us for another week for recovery. In honor of their little snip snip I am posting a set of photos that Kevin took of me giving the babies their first bath about 3 weeks ago. Poor poor kittens, the water is going to get them! In order of appearance: Moxie (Black & White), Boomer (Grey & White, Denali (Brown Tiger), Nonny (Grey). - Photos all by Kevin.

I'm surprised your hands weren't bleeding a LOT by the end. :)

Ken, I had some pretty good scratches from these guys early on, but not too much from the baths. We actually gave them another bath a week later but didn't take photos then. They were not happy, but they trusted me pretty quickly (fools) so they complained but weren't too bad with the claws. I got them so young this time and I really think that helped with a lot of things. These guys...

- Rachel Lea Fox
Yeah, it's really surprising how much they've grown over the last three weeks, both in size and personality. They were actually really good. They didn't like it, but I think they were too young to feel entitled to a dry world. If momma tells them it's time to get wet, "Hey, I'm the new guy. You tell me I need to get wet and soapy? I'm not gonna like it, but I won't argue much." A few weeks later and they're all, "Hey, that's not how the world works and you know it so let me down!"
- Kevin Fox
Okay, off to pick up the babies from their surgery. House has been so quiet without them. Hopefully they are all doing just fine and don't even have any idea what just happened to them. :)
- Rachel Lea Fox
Really? I actually thought the previous one was better than most apps of its complexity. Well, maybe you won't like this one either, but I'm curious to hear your feedback.
- Kevin Fox
is it compatible with 2.x? or do you need 3?
- Vicarbott
I've only played with this one for a few minutes, but it's leaps and bounds better than the older one, Kevin. My problem was that it would hang on stuff and the functionality would be borked. Good job, there sir. GOOD JOB.
- Derrick
I'm pretty sure you need 3. Oh, and I had no hand at all in this product btw. I just like it.
- Kevin Fox
Yep, just replaced it, and it fixes everything I hated about the old one. So far, anyway.
- Jandy
It says I have no updates in the app store :(
- Georgia
Oh, well whoever handled it did a hell of a job.
- Derrick
The old FB app was top-flight when it was released, it's just that FB has dramatically redesigned the main site in the last X months and the mobile app was completely outdated. Finally we can actually interact with most of the core FB features.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
It's pretty cool, although I don't have much use for being this connected to Facebook. The news feed section is what native FriendFeed apps should be aiming for: it's a great experience. Only thing I'd have liked to see it do is have inline comments/commenting: that seems to be avoided on all of these lifestream native apps, and I'm not sure why. Seems to work fine on the iPhone version of friendfeed.com.
- Mark Trapp
Facebook comments are a lie, duh. It is pretty weird that random uncommented blips from streams get printed but the comments people actually take the time to make on others' stuff are hidden behind a jump.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Hmm, not showing an update available in the app store...
- Brett Kelly
Brett: it's not available for upgrade, but if you uninstall the app and redownload it from the app store, it'll download the new version. Don't ask me why it does that.
- Mark Trapp
I like it, for Facebook. But it still pales to FF iPhone interface for convo.
- Josh Haley
It still secretly changes your privacy settings in some cases, I was hoping they'd fix that :(
- Tinfoil 2.0
Even if you see "no updates," you can search in the App Store app for Facebook, install it normally, and it will update your previously installed version.
- Stephen Mack
I'm shocked it didn't get denied like all the other apps I'd actually use!
- Ace
Agreed. This is a vast improvement over it's predecessor. I'd go as far to say that it sets the bar much higher for other apps in it's class.

We now foster for two shelters, Palo Alto Animal Services and now the Humane Society of Silicon Valley. This is our first group with HSSV and they are just adorable. We decided to take on HSSV also because, well they asked. They were desperately looking for foster parents as they have had too many kittens this year, and Palo Alto has had a light year so I talked with everyone involved and so now we work with both. I hope it won't be too much to keep everyone's different rules straight and all, but everyone is so wonderful at both places that I think it will work out fine. These 4 were just picked up in a lot in San Jose, their mother is rather feral and ran off so these guys got brought in and I got called. Woo hoo!!! This is exactly what I needed to fill the little hole in my heart that Orion left behind. Seems to be 2 boys and 2 girls, but more updates will be coming soon I'm sure. My guess is that they are about 3.5 or 4 weeks old. We will have these guys at lest 4 weeks, maybe more.

Aden, well right now they are all super timid and not so sure about me, but I keep taking short breaks from work and popping in on them and giving scritches and talking to them and they are getting interested. The all grey one looks like he will warm up first, the black and white girl (i think) is currently the most unhappy with me and the grey and white boy (i think) is an ostrich wanting to bury his head anywhere he can. It will take time, but they will warm up.

Anne, yup, all the same litter. You can get some wild variation of kitten markings in a litter as not all the kittens in the same litter always have the same father. Here is a photo from a litter of 5 where there were also three looks, black and white, tiger grey and bermin white (one kitten is missing in the photo) http://www.flickr.com/photos... Going well. These guys are showing signs of closer to 3.5 weeks old, so I think I will be getting up to feed them in 4 or 5 hours, just till I know they will eat enough.

I adopted my dog Chase from HSSV. It was a good experience. He was classified as special needs due to being very afraid at the shelter. The foster family had taken really good care of him.

- Benjamin Golub
Interestingly enough, when I showed this to my boyfriend, his response was "they aren't taking their wedding seriously." He couldn't answer me as to why serious equates to solemn in his head. I suspect it has something to do with his Catholic school upbringing. He denies that, of course.
- EricaJoy
I was in a wedding where the entrance to the reception was kind of like that. The whole bridal party (except for me and the recovering alcoholic) was totally trashed. The wedding party thought they were really funny. Their friends found them mildly funny. The relatives were not at all amused.
- Robert Felty
Speaking as the son of a man who got married on a carousel (I carried a Snoopy doll carrying a pillow with the rings on it) I thoroughly approve. Houses of worships encompass the breadth of society, and celebrate the diversity of the human condition. To say that they should cast even our most joyous occasions as serious and solemn is to be far sillier than this wedding was.
- Kevin Fox
Meh. Your wedding should be what you want it to be.
- Kevin Fox
++ Kevin a wedding should be about the couple and who they are. It should be about them joining their lives together. If that means they join in dance, then why shouldn't that be part of the wedding? Kevin and I took photographs of each other, our wedding party and our guests from the alter. Photography is a huge part of who we are together and we wanted that as part of our ceremony....

Yes, no one else should even THINK of trying to determine how others should get married, unless he/she's asked for his/her opinion. That's THEIR day. Why people think weddings should be dull events in uncomfortable clothing is totally beyond me. You'll have the rest of your life to get shoved into conformity.

- MiniMage, enterRUPPted
This was so fun. It reminded me of a friend's wedding last fall. The bride and her father did Devo's Safety Dance as the father/bride dance. It was instantly clear where the bride got her dance moves as well as her sense of humor.

Today, Google engineers announced a technology called PubSubHubbub that makes RSS/Atom more real-time, and they deployed the technology on FeedBurner. FriendFeed also added support for the technology, so if you have a FeedBurner feed, your updates should show up in FriendFeed within seconds rather than minutes after the feed updates.
To enable it for your FeedBurner feed: go to Feedburner, click on the "Publicize" tab, and then click on "PingShot" and enable the PingShot service. That will enable PubSubHubbub and send your feed to a number of ping services.

Brett, why didn't you use the weblogs.com ping protocol? Your comment there about RSS, right up front, really captures the whole philosophy -- right? Let's just reinvent stuff that already works, so... Why? To break everything that already works? It won't happen that way. It'll only make your adoption curve steeper.

I think that unless you have installed the pubsubhubbub plugin for wordpress, that feedburner still polls your content. It pushes your content out to other interested parties using the new mechanism, but it will still poll your feed. Correct?
- Marlin Forbes
How did you shoot Glitter? zoomed all the way in, purposefully out of focus?
- Tudor Bosman
My guess is that Rachel twisted the focus ring during a half-second or so exposure. That's one of our funner techniques. This was the first year that I shot exclusively with a fixed lens (105mm) and played more with exposure settings than focus. It added a nice dimension and let me catch shots in a way that I hadn't seen before.
- Kevin Fox
oh my gosh! those are amazing photos!!!! :) how fun!!!
- Erin "Wifey" Johns
Tudor, I'm really not sure exactly which things I did to get Glitter. Unfortunately I can't record exactly what I do for each one, I really wish I could, it would help a lot. Glitter is one of my favorites from this set and I have to say I have not gotten one close to like that before. I'm going to have to try and replicate that one at some point. What I can tell is that I was playing with the focus and moving the camera around in the air in addition to: ISO 400, f8, shutter 1.3sec, 300mm zoom.
- Rachel Lea Fox
Stephen, funny thing... for a short time I was holding my iPhone to video the fireworks in one hand and my Nikon D700 in the other hand actually taking photographs. It was fun, but I couldn't pull that off for very long.

Everyone should go to this page (http://bit.ly/tuotL) and preemptively set up password recovery. If your account were ever to be hacked (God forbid), you will thank me.

What? There's another view? Please post.
- Ken Morley
I'm pretty sure it's in the collection "Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head", published back in the early/mid 70s. I know I've got it around here somewhere...

""Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo." is a grammatically correct sentence used as an example of how homonyms and homophones can be used to create complicated constructs. It has been discussed in literature since 1972 when the sentence was used by William J. Rapaport, an associate professor at the University at Buffalo."

There is also this version with 21 mentions, also grammatically correct: "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo Buffalo, Buffalo: Buffalo buffalo Buffalo Buffalo, Buffalo buffalo Buffalo Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo Buffalo Buffalo, buffalo."

INSTANT pick of the week on FFundercats!
- Josh Haley
I'll take the center square for—oh. even number of rows :)
- Micah
Ah sorry Nir, missed that comment. I saved them in the order i wanted them so i knew which one to go first, then uploaded each one in order starting with 1. I had to do a few tests to get the width right as it seems to depend on the picture width as to how many it posts on one line.
- Simon Wicks
Christopher, My cells were 150x100 if thats any help. You can try with other sizes like 75x75 and get 7 across, same as when Flickr imports.
- Simon Wicks
awesome. got this from that flickr set right? looks great
- Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
Alfredo, nope. I was inspired by this post by a friend http://friendfeed.com/al86sha... even though the pictures aren't joined. Just had the idea. I only remembered about that Flickr one after doing it. :)

"Zoo Basel's children's zoo welcomed eight miniature piglets this week or, as they call them, mini-schwein. While not exactly exotic, the tiny piglets are the size of small puppies and have proven to be an absolute delight for the Swiss children lucky enough to see them. Pigpile!"

I just love the little pink nosed piggie in the first photo!

I think there's something telling here - players are focused on hoisting up threes, working just inside the line, or layups. There's that conspicuously dark middle ring (I'm guessing 5-10 feet from the basket) that there are far fewer shots from. Either these are the hardest places to get a shot off (because of defensive schemes), or players aren't exploiting these areas to the fullest capacity.
- Mike Nayyar
The dark middle ring is where you have to deal with the most defense AND you're less likely to get a foul call than driving for a layup
- Roshan Vyas
Right. I think the inner peak are layups and if you're not getting that close you're better off with less pressure a few steps out where you can get a good arc.
- Kevin Fox
I'm suprised about the corner 3s tho... that's a tough shot.
- Roshan Vyas
I'm also guessing they're measuring release point, since a player's feet leave the ground farther out than most of those inside shots.
- Kevin Fox
Corner 3's are where shooters camp out, and they're also the shortest 3's.
- Dan Hsiao
The corner 3's are the highest percentage shot (both taken and made) because it's the shortest 3 pointer available. The best teams will exploit the hell out of that shot.
- Mark Philpot
oh goodness I just really looked at this picture. it so fits me right now becuase i am trying to stay awake until the season premiere of House
- R. Ferguson
Hahaha! Looking at all the older posts is making me nostalgic. My feed is now boring filled with Tweets. I'm going to start posting fun stuff again.
- Mona Nomura
fan bloody tastic! So we can post here and Twitterers can comment away without any complaints! The only think you need to try and do is bring in comments (about a share) from twitter into here! :)
- Zee.
This is great...should help new users quite a bit.
- Mark Krynsky
OK, I admit I'm dense. As an existing user will this help me find the folks I follow on Twitter?
- Laura Norvig
Cool, is it possible we could have the ability to bulk import or non-FF Twitter friends as private feeds so we can track them in FF? :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Laura, existing FriendFeed users should just go to http://friendfeed.com/friends... and click on the Twittter (and Facebook and Google) icons to find their friends. Kol, not yet, but I'm hoping to add something like that soon (improved imaginary friends).
- Paul Buchheit
Thx, Paul - guess I haven't been to that page since the launch. btw, I'm definitely coming around to the new friendfeed (colors notwithstanding).
- Laura Norvig
Great to see the standards working -OAuth fro Gogole and Twitter login on Friendfeed
- Kevin Marks
That's a great tool, Paul! Found a few from Twitter and Facebook I didn't realise were on FF...:)
- WoH: Minding her Steves
Oh man, that is suh-weet. Works really well.
- Laura Norvig
Paul, that would be wonderful, thank you. I'm keen to use FF as a kinda Twitter client. I'd love the ability to import my group I've created on Tweetvisor too but that would additionally require exporting facilities from Tweetvisor, and from asking them they've told me it's low priority (which is fair enough).
- Kol Tregaskes
That's fantastic! Sharing with all of my not-yet-friendfeedified twitter friends. Thanks, Paul!
- Eric Johnson
This IS good. Thanks for the hard work, Benjamin Golub.
- Micah
WOW! 313 new Twitter people! Amazing what the OAuth did. Amazing. That just completely Rocks!
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
That was just too easy, and found a bunch of Twitter people. I just subscribed, but I hope they participate. I'm sure I'll have to trim later.
- Eric
Thanks for everything Benjamin and the others, that is really great. :)
- Alp
I was subscribed to exactly 100 of the people I follow on Twitter. Added 93 more. Funny, this is actually helping me find people I *don't* want to follow in either place.
- Laura Norvig
I'm looking forward to the "advanced imaginary friends" section which lets me as an existing FriendFeed user view all the twitter updates from people that don't use FriendFeed.
- Brian Sloane
Just posted this to my stream then saw this, Cool stuff Paul
- Charlie Anzman
Some time ago I spent lots of time in removing my Facebook-Friendfeed integration, and didn't succeed, Facebook refused to remove it. Since that - no info about any other my services to Facebook, ever.
- orie
Happy to hear that there will be an improved imaginary friend option!
- Jacob
The improved imaginary friend feature will be great. No need to visit Twitter much then!
- Pinksy
FriendFeed is constantly bringing new value to the service. I'm loving it!
- Amie Gillingham
I just imported 8,000 new Twitter friends. Worked MUCH BETTER than last time.
- Robert Scoble
Smart move guys. A quick way to grow FF users is to tap into the current hot properties. Can't believe other Social Networks are so slow to respond.
- Neill Adamson
Paul, is there a way to sync it so that people I no longer follow on Twitter are unfollowed on FriendFeed?
- Jorge Escobar
Great news on the advanced imaginary friends. That plus the ability to comment back to Facebook posts as easily as we reply to Twitter would be killer.
- Kevin Kuphal
Ca passe 50 fois par jour ce truc là sur FriendFeed ! C''est pas possible d'arr^ter, j'en ai marre de le voir franchement ... ^^
- Jean-Marie Gall™
from twhirl
@Robert cannot seem to do that with groups. What I want to do: Concentrate different RSS feeds (e.g. newswires) which do not necessarily have an account in any other social network into one imaginary friend's collection of feeds.
- Mark Jacobs
Mark, "groups" (formerly "rooms") are able to import feeds just like regular users (and imaginary friends). See https://friendfeed.com/xoogle-... for example (imports the blogs of all known xoogle startups). The only thing special about imaginary friends is that they don't have usernames (or rather we assign a random 128 bit username).
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, the DM option on imaginary friends should perhaps be removed. Also, imaginary friends do not show up on the search dropdown list when you type in their name in the search box.
- Kol Tregaskes
Paul, is it possible to automatically create "imaginary friends" from twitter following list? What I would like is to read all my Twitter in FriendFeed; many of twitterers though are not on FF, so I have to create them by hand which is tedious. Also, it would be nice to allow to add them to some special list.
- Ihar Mahaniok
Ihar, see my comment up in the middle and Paul's reply. Looks like FF are working on it. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Still would like an imaginary friend than making bunch of Groups to simulate peoples that doesn’t use FF. BTW, unlike the Facebook Connect login, when I tried logging in using Twitter, it made a new account for me on FF instead of opening my own (which also has Twitter activity added).
- Natsuki Seika
Fn-Shift-F11 to do a print screen while running Windows 7 in Boot Camp on a MacBook Pro. Obscure enough for ya ;-). It took me awhile to find this.
- Alan Le
Ctrl-Alt-Down - works only if the Intel Graphic Media driver is installed, though. It turns your desktop upside down, use Ctrl-Alt-Up to reverse the effect.
- Ray Metzen
@vijay: I tried it and the lights turned off next door. Neat!
- Jemm
Ray, left and right arrows work, too. There's a checkbox in the Dell video driver settings to enable/disable it. We used to get tons of calls at the helpdesk until we started disabling it. "MY COMPUTER IS TURNED SIDEWAYS!!!"
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
Jemm, that IS "neat". But it's supposed to do other stuff too. Oh well, as long as it didn't rain Pink Elephants everyone's fine I guess.
- vijay
Ctrl < and Ctrl > for moving through emails in a folder in Outlook.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
ha3rvey - yep, works in any direction. I've found though that the effect on unsuspecting users is best if you turn it upside down ;)
- Ray Metzen
Ctrl UP/DOWN for talking to xbacklight. Sweet tweak!
- Kevin Gamble
Oh, and dare I mention gmail's (& readers) j & k & n & p. Those are probably my most pressed buttons.
- Steve and 3 other people
@Kevin, thanks for the last one, it's much better now!
- Лёша
it's actually: cmd+shift+4 space – takes a neat screenshot of a window with all mac's shadows and stuff. really great feature for a designer of any kind. I miss autoscrolling within the window while screenshoting, though.
- Лёша
alt+cmd+esc ... or shift+s on boot-up so I can run applejack ... (mac)
- Brandon
j/k on web apps that supports it. CTRL+T and CTRL+W on ff browser. ;)
- AJ Batac :)
Windows+Pause/Break, brings up system properties. =p
- Daniel Bruce
ctrl-shift-T to undo close tab on Firefox. It works in Chrome as well.
- Alan Le
control-. (period) in Visual Studio to bring down the smarttag dropdown to add references, etc
- Paul Whitaker
My guess is that FF is auto-demystifying the URL same as they would if he'd used a tinyURL.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I think you're right, Daniel. It reads "http://friendfeed.com/?bc=1" on the beta, but "http://beta.friendfeed.com” on the old site. Which makes me think they they expand the 301 redirect in both cases, but just have a missing feature to replace the text in the beta. [Edit: 302 redirect.]
- DeWitt Clinton
The redesign is either a good thing or a bad thing, I really can't tell. I really hate it, enough that I don't think I will be able to use it when you push it to the main site. If ff looked and acted like this before I joined, I probably never would have bothered with it. So how can this be a good thing? My productivity may have a sharp increase after I abandon the site.
- April
April I think I"m right there with you. I want to love this design...but it's like you need a dummies book on FriendFeed just to use it effectively now without getting a headache.
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
Kevin, I just saw a "poll" post in your FF (it seems to have been deleted). Are polls coming to FF? Would be great!
- Jérôme
First minute of trying it: it feels fresher! Maybe this is the beginning of a new design trend in websites. Definitely like the "feel".
- Olivier Tharan
