Obama to Kids: Want to Be President? Be Careful on Facebook - http://mashable.com/2009...
Obama to Kids: Want to Be President? Be Careful on Facebook
Prior to his live Internet broadcast to students across the country earlier today, President Obama answered questions at a Virginia high school. Asked by one student how he could become President someday, Obama issued a warning about Facebook. “I want everybody here to be careful about what you post on Facebook, because in the YouTube age whatever you do, it will be pulled up again later somewhere in your life. That’s number one,” he said, according to Bloomberg. Poignant advice for aspiring politicians in the 21st century? Absolutely. It’s actually hard to imagine how someone who grows up with social media will be able to run for President one day without exercising extreme caution. That’s not to mention how wildly one’s views may change from the time they’re 15 to the when they’re 45, giving cables news channels decade’s worth of fodder to opine about. Meanwhile, even for many of those with slightly lower ambitions, social media is proving to be an obstacle. Recent research showed... - Amiroo ™

EMAIL ADDICTS: Gmail Users Consume the Most Email
Show all
Do different personalities choose different email clients, or is it that different email clients foster different habits? Will a Yahoo Mail user open and read as much email as the average Gmail user? This is the type of data that can be essential for both researchers and marketers. eMarketer picked up on some recent numbers released by MailChimp that indicate that, in fact, Gmail users are more likely to open emails and click on links within them when compared to the other mail email clients. The following is a graph of email engagement, based on MailChimp’s analysis of over 184 million emails: While Hotmail, Yahoo, and AOL mail users are very similar in terms of the amount of email they read (the low 20% range) and how often they click on links (between 4.2% and 4.5%), Gmail users open emails at a 30.9% rate. They also click on links 6.4% of the time. As eMarketer points out, Gmail also produces the lowest bounce rate of all email services, although that probably has more to do with... - Amiroo ™

STATS: Flat Month for Social Media, With Some Surprises

We’ve reported on the tremendous growth of both Facebook and Twitter month after month in the last year or so, but looking at Compete’s stats for August, we’ve got neither good nor bad news, as the hottest social networks have stagnated when it comes to new visitors. Part of the reason could merely be the lazy days of summer, which causes a drop in traffic on almost all Internet destinations. Since traffic growth was almost flat on Facebook and Twitter in both July and August, we can probably expect some healthy growth again in September. Summer hasn’t been bad for everyone though, as some social sites have done very well in July and August. Compete tells us that Facebook has had 122,220,617 unique visitors in August; a -0.37% drop compared to July, but it grew to 2,202,528,780 visits in the same period, rising 4.69%. Twitter’s stats are almost the opposite: a small drop in visits (-2.99%, down to 148,651,794) but a tiny rise as far as unique visitors go, which were at 23,579,044,... - Amiroo ™

Box.net Brings Cloud Storage to iPhone Apps

iPhone applications are becoming increasingly common — and convenient — ways for users to access their documents, photos and web services. The only real problem is that because the iPhone lacks a distinctly user-controllable file management system, accessing your existing documents from within those applications is often difficult, if not impossible. Storage and collaboration service Box.net has just launched its OpenBox Mobile API, which offers developers the ability to integrate the Box.net platform into their apps. What this means is that users will have the ability to access their content stored on Box.net within their favorite iPhone applications. So if you use the Quickoffice [iTunes link] application, you can access your documents stored on Box.net, make edits and then e-mail the new copy. The new API is free for developers — just sign up for a Box.net and then join the developers program. The iPhone is the first platform being rolled out, but Box.net is also working with... - Amiroo ™

Share Groups of Twitter Users in One Click with TweepML
Show all
If you’re already familiar with OPML, the open standard format used to share groups of RSS feeds, then this analogy will explain the concept well: TweepML is like OPML for Twitter users. The simplest use case for TweepML is to allow sites or individuals to create a downloadable file that contains a list of Twitter users, allowing others to import the file and follow all those users easily in one fell swoop. Imagine for example the popular Follow Friday tradition on Twitter — instead of trying to cram a big list of tweeps into 140 characters, you could simply create a TweepML file and point your followers to that. Like OPML, TweepML is based on XML, a textual data format and open standard in wide usage on the web. Companies and individuals will be able to take the simple and extensible architecture of TweepML and build extra functionality and applications on top of it, all without having to pay hefty licensing fees or get anyone’s permission to do so. Embeddable Waves: The Google Wave WordPress Plugin
One of the more intriguing aspects of Google Wave – the much anticipated communication and collaboration platform that debuts later this month – is the fact that Waves can be embedded anywhere on the Web. Waves, in case you’re not familiar, are essentially individual threaded conversations that take place within Google Wave. So, when we’re talking about an embeddable Wave, it means a conversation that can be placed on other websites, with the same functionality as it would have within Wave itself. Since some developers already have access to Google Wave, we’re now able to show you what this functionality looks like – and how you may be seeing it in the future – via a WordPress plugin that has already been built for easily embedding Waves in blog posts. Embeddable Waves You’ll only be able to see the embed in action if you have a dev account for Wave, so here’s a screenshot of what the end result looks like, via a post on Mastering Wave: It might not be much to see yet, but here are a... - Amiroo ™

HUGE: Yahoo Mail Supports 100MB Email Attachments (With an App)
Today Yahoo! Mail users are in for a treat: they can attach large files up to 100MB in size to any message they send using drop.io’s Attach Large Files application. Just click on the “Attach Large Files” heading in your Applications listing in Yahoo! Mail. What’s great about drop.io is that all your files are stored on their cloud, so your recipients can see what files you’ve sent and either download them individually or all at once. You can send as many files as you want per up to 100MB per message. From a development perspective, the Attach Large Files app is interesting because it was built entirely on top of the drop.io open API. The company wanted to show off the potential of the API and no better way to do that than build an easy-attachment app onto a huge webmail platform like Yahoo! Mail. I love the idea of being able to send drops via e-mail with such ease and I hope other developers consider implementing this type of functionality into other platforms. Bit.ly Is Now Bigger Than TinyURL

The URL shortening market has been experiencing a renaissance ever since Twitter’s 140 character limit spurred the necessity of shorter URLs. Since they are relatively simple to implement, we’ve seen hundreds, if not thousands, of new shorteners come to the market, from the useful to the very strange. While this market has a lot of competitors, two big players dominate the space: Bit.ly and TinyURL. For a long time, TinyURL was winning the war, despite Bit.ly’s advanced features. The game changed though when Bit.ly became Twitter’s default URL shortener. New numbers from Compete.com (which measures U.S. traffic stats) now reveal a major development in the URL shortener market: Bit.ly has now dethroned TinyURL as the largest URL shortener on the web. Here is the newest traffic graph and stats: In May, TinyURL had 5.34 million U.S. visitors, compared to Bit.ly’s 2.96 million. But my, how things can change in three months. In August, TinyURL grew only to 5.64 million visitors (about 5.4%... - Amiroo ™

The Future of the iPhone: Intelligent Object Recognition - http://mashable.com/2009/07/10/iphone-object-recognition/
How would you like to be able to point your iPhone towards an object – the Eiffel Tower, for example – and instantly see the admission price, working hours, its height and other information? We’ve been hearing about such concepts for quite some time now – and we’ve been able to visualize it better since the movie Minority Report – but Apple’s latest iPhone related patents might make it a reality sooner than one would think. A patent called ID App does just that; it recognizes an object based on visuals (through the iPhone’s camera), a RFID reader or through GPS, and then fetches the data from related databases. I like to imagine all this happening in real-time, with a layer of visual information superimposed on the actual camera image, but in the beginning it’ll probably just take you to a related Wikipedia page. Still, it’s a start. Another patent focuses on facial recognition, which can also be used for a variety of purposes. It could bring you info about a person (scary, I know)... - Amiroo ™
There has been development of face recognition databases for many years already but during recent years technology has improved much and some of it started to appear in end-user applications for normal people. I have been left wondering if things face recognition in web apps like Google Picasa will be one base for improved databases for searching information about people when other apps get more improvements and amount of data sources increase. - Daniel Schildt
Facebook also has support for tagging people but they still haven't finished face recognition support for their service (while I have seen some mentions that there might be development related to it going on). - Daniel Schildt
After they finish basic things in client apps they will be looking for quality data providers. There is already giants like Google that have used years to make their image database larger but some smaller search providers have much more advanced image search engines. Anyway, it will be interesting to see which direction development of these kind of apps go. - Daniel Schildt
Another usage for image recognition data is to re-index already cached image data (in Google's etc. image search) and find similar patters (like buildings, faces, etc.) that can be associated together in search. It might not be very accurate at first but data gets smarter as more people use it and when it's combined to user-provided tagging. End result might be quite scary, but that's the way world is going to… - Daniel Schildt
With this amount of intelligence I don't know what would happen to our privacy - Amiroo ™
What privacy? Is there still some of it left? While most of data is still hidden under, new generation of mashup tools will make it easier to have wide overall view of wide amount of data sources (both public and private). When you compile both public (via web search, public government/business databases, etc.) together with semi-private (web surfing logs) to private (credit card data etc.) you have quite large coverage of what person does. But that's not enough: add GPS location data to mix and it's scary… - Daniel Schildt
Based of what I have read, some countries have required phone manufacturers to include chips to make phone specify location more closely without having to rely to GPS. Including of those might have been key because need to have more close look of where people are moving and what are their daily movements. - Daniel Schildt

If anyone would like my '100 recommendations' give me a shout (I've created a specific friends list). A few points about the recommendation system though:
1. I know this could open it up to abuse but I'd really like to select users to recommend to in bulk. One by one is very frustrating. - Kol Tregaskes
2. And this could open it up to abuse too but I'd also like the ability select all/none from my friends lists. This could be useful generally, though. - Kol Tregaskes

4. FriendFeed, can we also please have the option to add the subscriptions when we select to 'subscribe to all' to add them to a friends list? - Kol Tregaskes
5. Can you spend up the loading of the subscription list. With nearly 4,000 subscriptions my pop-up, the one you get once you click on 'recommend friends' which is the same as what you get when you are editing your friends lists, takes ages! :-( - Kol Tregaskes

Jason, can you check a few of the 80 to see if that is the case? It's odd as it should only show me the subscriptions you have not already subscribed to here. - Kol Tregaskes

It’s only been a few days, but it feels like weeks since Google announced Google Chrome OS and stirred up the blogosphere and the imagination of techies and Microsoft haters everywhere. The response, the analysis, and the debate has been constant ever since. Can it beat Windows? Can it even run Photoshop? Two days ago, we profiled the ongoing battle between Microsoft and Google, focusing on areas where the two companies compete. Almost everyone has framed Google Chrome OS as a direct competitor to Microsoft Windows. But I am about to argue that this is the wrong way to view Chrome OS. Google’s goal isn’t to have the majority market share. The goal is to force you on the web more and for longer. Why? It’s all part of Google’s simple equation to monetize the world. It’s not about how Google makes money, it’s about where What website doesn’t have a Google ad these days? Google generated about $21 billion in revenue last year. The vast majority of that revenue, well over 95%, comes from... - Amiroo ™

Apple's 9.7-inch 'netbook' to debut in October for $800? - http://feeds.engadget.com/~r/weblogsinc/engadget/~3/dgbfE6BSg4Y/
$800 is pretty expensive for a netbook. All the other ones seem to be half the price. aside from that Sony one. - John Wang
Although it's just a rumor but they're talking about a touchscreen one, for a tablet not that bad consider it as a big iphone - Amiroo ™
How much more than the crunchpad will this have to do to seem worth it? - Tony from fftogo
What's the estimate for crunchpad ? I think about 300 $ right ? - Amiroo ™
The Crunchpad is supposed to be kept under $300. - Tony from fftogo
I'm betting the crunchpad will be sold with a service contract in order to keep the perceived price low and subsidized. True life time cost for the crunchpad will be significantly more than $300 if you count in the cost for the cell service. - Niklas Morberg
No service plan likely for the Crunchpad because it isn't intended to be capable of using the cell network; wifi only. The speculation for the possible Macpad, however, is that it WILL have cell network capability and so might pick up a $200 discount to make it more palatable. - JR Holmes from Nambu
