"Web 2.0 was created so that people could publish cute photos of their cats. But this same cat dissemination technology has proved extremely helpful for activists, who’ve turned these tools to their own purposes." - Ethan Zuckerman (http://www.ethanzuckerman.com/blog...)

Isn't there a website where you can submit pictures of photo-stealers? This should totally be submitted. || Edit: Found it. http://thisisphotobomb.com/

Just showed these to my missus who's been going to yoga for years. Her responses: "can't do that... can't do that... my legs don't do that... can't do that... no idea what that is... can't do that..." Damn.

jnman, google's translation service has it's limitations. I don't know what is different about that particular comment, though. This is anecdotal, but I would roughly estimate that 20% of the posts I've tried google translate responds with at least some null translation results.
- Micah
Thank you Micah! Josh just showed me how to do it. I didn't know you had to open an individual post by clicking the time. I'm tech challenged. :)
- Trish Haley
Trish, thank you for the honesty. Ahhhh, _documentation_ so often an afterthought *scolds self*. Actually, if someone wants to pitch in help make a tutorial, please let me know. I'm working on a full set of pre-loaded configurations for each support translation language ~ maybe it will get released tonight (hard not to be in all the great conversations, though - that's the rub :D
- Micah
Thanks, chrisofspades. I've been meaning to ask how the activity on ffThreadKiller is lately? If ya-all haven't checked it out yet head over to http://friendfeed.com/friendf...
- Micah
Micah - tried out the bookmarklet on safari :))) Awesome. interesting how much better the translation is that the google.com/translate .(google.com version doesn't seem to do transliterated text. - the version your script accesses is getting a fair amount of it.)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
activity waned. and I've been waffling on some back-end decisions that's preventing me from updating it.
- chrisofspades
from email
Rob, cool. That's an interesting comparison.
- Micah
chrisofspades, yeah, I guess for a lot of people the statistic is interesting initially, but doesn't have legs. Have you considered expanding what statistics it gathers? You've already worked out how it spiders, what other calculations are feasible? I've seen a lot of requests for date range searching. Maybe some slice of data related to the timestamp.
- Micah
date range searching would be sweet chrisofspades! if there's anything I can do to help please let me know! test maybe?

"The Alpine Wall (Vallo Alpino) was a system of fortifications along Italy's northern frontier built in the years leading up to World War II. Built at the direction of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, the defensive line faced France, Switzerland, Austria and Yugoslavia. The Alpine line was similar in concept to other frontier fortifications of the same era, including the Maginot Line of France, the Siegfried Line of Germany, and the National Redoubt of Switzerland. Italy's land frontiers were in most places mountainous and easily defended, but in the years leading up to World War II, Italy's relations with its neighbors were uneasy. Even in its dealings with its German ally, Italy was concerned about German ambitions towards its majority German-speaking region in the Province of Bolzano-Bozen. Due to the rugged nature of the Alpine frontier, defenses were confined to passes and observation posts in accessible locations."

The Oprah moment of "everybody gets a phone!". I'm not bitter like Allen, but who doesn't like free stuff? :)
- Louis Gray
I thought as much, though I think you would be a great guest for Oprah. Even though your accent is completely different to what I had imagined it to be :)

Louis - come to Vegas - it will be fun!
- Jesse Stay
I'd invite you to Boston, but we don't have too much going on right now.
- Martha
Martha, hello? There's a Pats game this Sunday! ;-) (My parents live just 10 minutes from Gillette Stadium)
- Jesse Stay
Louis...I'm headed to CES and Jesse is teasing me with the possibility of BBQ on the outskirts of Vegas again...heads or tails?
- Mark Krynsky
I haven't been there in over 5 years and I'm in the market for a new TV and want to see what's coming this year before I pull the trigger on one I have my eye on.
- Mark Krynsky
Mark, that's fine - my brother will go with me. He appreciates good BBQ ;-)
- Jesse Stay
and yeah - it's not that I *don't* gamble (although our religion discourages it). It's more that I think it's a losing sport :-) I prefer investing.

I'm a college football guy myself. Maybe I'll put something on the BCS championship ;-)
- Jesse Stay
Oh hey - that is RIGHT, Jesse! Damn, what was a (not) thinking? I work about 20 minutes from Gillette Stadium - what town are they in?
- Martha
Martha, they live in Franklin. Do you work at EMC?
- Jesse Stay
No, I work at OneBeacon in Canton. I have friends who work at EMC. They are nearby - about 20 minutes from my work down 95 / 495.

"Skiff Reader: The Ultimate E-Reader | If you bought an Amazon Kindle DX in 2009, prepare for a heavy dose of buyer’s remorse. The Skiff Reader has overtaken the Amazon Kindle DX as the largest e-reader on the market, but its size isn’t what makes the Skiff so special. The Skiff Reader brings two new technologies to the large-scale e-reader market: a touchscreen e-ink display and “silicon thin-film-transistors on a flexible steel substrate”. The Skiff Reader pushes the e-reader standard by featuring a full touchscreen display spanning 11.5-inches. The Amazon Kindle DX and smaller Kindle models don’t feature touchscreen e-ink, neither does that Barnes and Noble Nook (while the latter has an LCD touchscreen below the e-ink portion). This provides a new, finger-friendly world of navigation as you flip pages, highlight and select content modules and skim through your favorite ebooks."

Wow, if that's for real, I'm super jazzed. I've wanted a large high-res ebook reader for ages.
- Joel Webber
Nice. You could fit that inside the case of a MacBook air. I wonder what the update rate on that e-ink screen is though. [edit] Oh... it's not e-ink, it's TFT. Does that mean real-time updates? Wow X 2.
- Matt M (inactive)
Morgan's question is most important, followed immediately by what content can you get on it?
- Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
i'm sitting here ready to buy this sexy beast. but i need to know how muchee. I'm guessing that Amazon.com ain't gonna offer it anytime soon.
- Morgan
Looks like they're setting up their own store: http://www.skiff.com/skiff-s.... So could be yet another proprietary format to add to Kindle/Sony/etc. Ugh on that.
- Jandy
As long as it reads PDF, .mobi and HTML formats without extra charge, I'd be OK with whatever proprietary junk they throw on it.
- Matt M (inactive)
I'm pretty sure this will not be available up north till you all in the US have it. :(
- AJ Batac
Rumor has it that the company making this thing is owned by the Hearst Corporation, who refer to this cryptically, as the device they expect will save the newspaper publishing industry from being destroyed by free news on the Internet. Expect plenty of DRM. Additionally, the software on the device will allow advertising to be "injected" into content. I am not sure if that means that if...

- April Russo
Mmmm.. Thanks for the rumors April. But I think they'll crack that baby up (as almost ANYTHING digital or firmware based) in no time after launch, just for me 8)
- Zu from AOD
That puts the Crunchpad to shame. If they'd come out with one of these that was in color and foldable it would be uber!
- Lindsay
The only company that's really managed to share DRM across technology platforms is Microsoft I think. Even then, the 'plays for sure' program didn't really last that long. I guess when you have the dream of ultimate control over your end-user's usage, sharing that with others isn't really something people like to do.
- Matt M (inactive)
Metal screen is very promising. I'm still curious about refresh rate, cost, DRM, etc. It looks like an awesome e-reader, but it doesn't look like a general purpose computing device (and it really ought to be)
- Jason Wehmhoener
This doesn't seem to use e-ink though - it's a TFT LCD screen, from the specs. Might mean that it's got an impressive refresh rate, but possibly worse sunlight readability.
- Matt M (inactive)
refresh rate for e-ink varies quite a bit from one ereader to another. i bring it up because i have doubts about e-ink as a viable technology, frankly.
- Jason Wehmhoener
Then I guess I'll wait for the next thing after eInk. I looked at a Sony reader the other day, and it took almost as long to refresh the page as it did to read the page (only a slight exaggeration, seriously). I read books on my iPhone and there's no refresh at all. It's right there. Why can't they use that?
- Jandy
Regardless, this thing just looks cool :)
- Jan Ole Peek
Jandy, exactly. The only reason people are buying the kindle is because they want cheaper books and they don't own an iphone, think the iphone screen is too small, or don't realize you can use an iphone to read kindle books. e-ink has nothing to do with the popularity of the kindle. ereaders were not considered as a going concern when sony was doing this. the difference is Amazon and...

- Jason Wehmhoener
I'm not saying an iPhone is a direct competitor to a Kindle or Sony reader, just that the time I've spent reading books on it was more enjoyable than the time I spent testing a Sony reader (granted, not that long, but long enough to be dismayed by the screen blinking at me for three or more seconds between pages). Plus, if I were to buy something like this, I would absolutely want it to...

- Jandy
Jason, I think you missed my point. The kindle is popular because kindle books are cheap. Period. No other reason.
- Jason Wehmhoener
Well we're getting there with these e-readers but his one is not colour and still too big. Cut it in half!
- Kol Tregaskes
In fact if there was some way of expanding/collapsing the size then that would be ace! This bendy feature would be good though, it would last longer if I used it. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
The size of a paperback reading book is what I'm thinking. That's where I would like to use it (as well as browse the net - if possible - or read newspapers, etc.).
- Kol Tregaskes
It would even be nice if it folded in half or something. That way, you could turn it landscape and read two smaller (approximately paperback-sized) pages or you could turn it portrait and read a single PDF-type letter-sized document. Fold it in half and put it in your bag to carry it around.
- DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
If it's crippled with DRM'd and doesn't support popular open formats, it'll be another pass for me. I actually don't mind minimal DRM too much for purchased books, but I shouldn't be restricted in any open formats I wish to view and there definitely shouldn't be any passing of data back to the mothership.

This invention is not new. I remember having seen this in the early '80s when a city bus was jacked up this way by a service crew after an accident.
- Stephan Planken
Similar (almost identical) device was marketed under TV-direct-sale ads in late 80's in Turkey. The valve applied pumping pressure to a little place so exhaust pressure was enough to pump the balloon without stalling. Useful anyway.
- Acharad Sami
This is very destructive thing for internal combustion engines. Motor revolution causes overheating for a while and engine life shortened. Exhaust gasses should be easily away from combustion chamber.
- Hüseyin Gürsoy
@Hüseyin, Sure that even built-in Catalytic Convertors provides much more opposing obstacle than this device. The balloon system has a conic shaped valve. In every case, exhaust pressure is much more than balloon's inside pressure (because conic valve's surface at balloon is so small) Thus you can pump air inside even with any hand-pump. After you stop pumping, valve closes and holds the air for you. After usage, all you need is turn on the evacuate mode of valve.
- Acharad Sami
