Haven't books targeted more to little girls already have some feminism in them? I would have to read the books to see if I think it's a good idea or not
- Shevonne
True feminism is just egalitarianism. Our society is chock full of sexism. Girls/women have no problem identifying with male protagonists but for some reason men are supposed to be emasculated by identifying with female protagonists. Thus most movies with male leads are considered mass appeal and those with female leads are considered "chick flicks". I don't think there's any problem with making sure there are books out there with female characters that do something more than waiting around to be rescued.
- Spidra Webster
I don't know how in principle they could be a bad idea - kids who can read, or who are old enough to enjoy being read to, have already been exposed to overwhelming amounts of sexist ideology, so how could an alternative perspective be harmful? Look at the covers of the books, even - why are Pippi and Adventure Annie wearing a dress and a skirt? What kind of adventures can you get into in a skirt, really? :-)

Ideally, we should get to a point in society where there is a balance of stories that's representative of the diversity of the human race. But we've had years and years of imbalance. There will be years and years of specialist studies and a type of "affirmative action" to make up for lost time. One day, maybe, we'll get to the balance we should have.
- Spidra Webster
feminism is bad for adults. gender engineering is wrong. what is worse is how our Stimulus money is being spent on jobs for women in hurt male industries that women don't do well in when industries that women do well in are growing. Pink color jobs are growing because our country has become docile service oriented industry cows. higher education is now almost 60% women. it isn't just...

I think Pippi had a very positive impact on me as a kid. She's strong-willed and outspoken in a positive way, and she's physically strong and brave. I don't think the Pippi books were crafted to be intentionally feminist, and maybe that's part of the reason they are so positive in their impact.

"The series also highlights the difference between the pursuit of engaging television and the sometimes frenzied efforts of contestants to win, perhaps at the risk of their own health. Doctors, nutritionists and physiologists not affiliated with “The Biggest Loser” express doubt about the program’s regimen of severe caloric restriction and up to six hours a day of strenuous exercise, which cause contestants to sometimes lose more than 15 pounds a week. At least one other contestant has confessed to using dangerous weight-loss techniques, including self-induced dehydration. On the first episode of the current season, two contestants were sent to the hospital, one by airlift after collapsing from heat stroke during a one-mile race. New contestants are entering the show more out of shape. Each of the last two seasons has broken the record for the heaviest contestant ever, at 454 and 476 pounds."

Laura, do they use biofeedback at all in treating interstitial cystitis? I'm curious because I was having urinary frequency, which turns out to be an abnormally small bladder, but I thought the biofeedback training I went through was very helpful in managing the urges and pain. Please forgive me if this is totally off base.

It's not off base at all - as I recall, yes, they do use biofeedback in my specialist's office.

Welcome to the group, Laura. I'm glad you're here for support... and I'm sorry that you need to be. In my own journey over the last couple years, I'm noticing that I seem to go through the stages of grief (including anger) in cycles. What makes you the angriest?
- Ladybug Heather
I don't know that I've accepted it? I'm angry about food. The best way to treat interstitial cystitis is to follow an incredibly restricted diet - and even though I've had the diagnosis for this long, I haven't been able to do it. It's like my inner five year old is stomping her foot and saying, I don't CARE if it's bad for me, I'm going to eat it anyway. Food has always been a comfort for me, and I feel like the IC is taking that away from me and leaving me without one of my oldest coping mechanisms.
- Laura H.
I can understand that one. I wonder... is it possible to plan some "naughtiness" into your diet? If you're still able to have some of those things you love, if in smaller portions, you may find that a help. I dunno.
- Ladybug Heather
I know that what's angered me the most with my dx (a connective tissue disorder that results in chronic pain) is watching the boundaries of my life close in on me. Well, that and just being in continual, never-ending pain! Many times I've said I'd give just about anything for one day with no pain.

"You can memorialize a dearly departed pet in several different ways, but few allow you to keep Mr. Fluffypants as close to your heart as these wearable gems, which are created using the carbon captured from his remains. Not one but several companies are offering grieving pet owners the opportunity to immortalize their animal companions as jewelry. Despite the morbid undertones, it’s a trend that’s rapidly gaining popularity in Japan. But here’s the rub: The portable memorials might be better for the planet, too. DNA2Diamonds is just one of the outlets touting its conflict-free, environmentally responsible personal diamonds. The carbon extracted from a lock of hair or cremated ashes is subjected to the same process of extreme heat and pressure that squeezes carbon into naturally occurring diamonds. And because the rocks are made in a lab, instead of mined, they don’t carry the same baggage as “blood diamonds” do. Eternal rest set in stone does not come cheap, however—expect to pay upwards of $3,000 for the gem alone."

"Ashley Price felt terrible. She was tired, dizzy spells came and went, dark splotches popped up on her chest for no reason, and she'd gained 50 pounds in two years. Some days she was starving; other days she could barely eat. Her doc suggested that her problems would go away if Price just ate less and exercised more, even though she was dieting and working out regularly. Price demanded thyroid tests, only to have them come back normal. Women may feel like their symptoms aren't taken seriously and that they're told to stop worrying. Her doctor told her: "I have no idea what it is. Wait for it to go away." It didn't go away. "I could no longer think straight, no matter how hard I tried or what I did," Price says. Worse, she suffered three straight miscarriages. Finally, four years after this nightmare began -- after the third miscarriage -- an ultrasound revealed that her ovaries were riddled with cysts. don't like. It is practically impossible to get diagnosed if you're a woman and have pain. I am sure a lot of other people here have had similar problems. :(
- Andrizzle Gizzle
i also saw this. i think if the doctors aren't taking their patients' concerns seriously, that's an issue that should be addressed in medical school or CMEs. patients being informed about potential diseases is good, but they shouldn't have to make their own diagnoses because the doctors don't believe them.
- Jessie
I suggested a friend ask abut this disorder because I had read about the symptoms in a women's magazine. It might have taken the doctor a very long time to come up with this diagnosis, if ever. Yet if we tell the doctor "I read about this" we're dismissed as hypochondriacs.

I know several people with PCOS - do doctors somehow not know?
- Daniel J. Pritchett
If I had a bottle of champagne for every time a doctor has told me to lose weight and exercise more we'd be having a big party. And do they ever act even the slightest bit contrite when something "real" turns up? I think not.
- Amy℠
I think PCOS is usually diagnosed by gyn because women come in complaining about the lack of period, and they don't even consider the other symptoms related. I know a few people who just consider not getting a period or getting a few a year to be "normal" - or if the woman has been on birth control a long time and is coming off, maybe? (I don't know if b/c helps control PCOS) - I think a lot of doctors don't want to mess with the pelvic region at all especially if it sounds like your symptoms are unrelated.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
Along the same lines, I feel guilty whenever I complain about a health issue or go to a doctor for a complaint. I feel like people (especially the doctor) think that I'm faking, even though I know darn well that I'm not. I guess I've had a crummy history with doctors plus I hate feeling like a pest.
- Rochelle
same, rochelle, when I made an appt with the doctor yesterday I was like, oh so sorry to bother might I please have a moment of the good doctors time kind sirs!!! I feel like a pest, then I feel like an idiot for not being more proactive.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
We all need to stop feeling like we are "whining." Let's make a pact. I just got an object lesson in this on Friday (see comment to Joey on my thread) - docs had been saying pain is FMS; new doc actually X-rayed & found bone spur. This is a feminist issue - whether or not docs are male/female - it is us cowing down to patriarchy. ARISE!
- Amy℠
PCOS is very common. Shop around with doctors until they get it right. Sad.
- Louis Gray
I love my (GP) doctor. I call him "Dr Doogie" because he's the same age as my kid. He takes me seriously. I can email him. He does my GYN but he'd be cool with it if I asked to see a female instead. He's one of the New Breed who believe in collaborating with patients in making health care decisions. And it's great that he's at a Johns Hopkins campus; I can get my lab work done right there. When I found a lump in my breast I was examined that day and had surgery 8 weeks later.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I also have PCOS. I probably had it since high school, but it was only diagnosed about 5 years ago. I'm actually glad for the experience, because it made it that much easier for me to be diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. (In that I knew something was wrong and pursued it.) Oh, and like many others - I only started investigating it when a friend from grad school suggested it sounded like PCOS (she had a friend with it).
- Laura H.
To finally get my diagnosis, I really had to push. I now bring a one-page doc to each appointment, with my current meds/dosages, med allergies, recent diagnostics/procedures, symptoms, and questions/concerns. The doctor doesn't always read the whole thing, but they do put them in my chart. My pain mgmt doc often reads it completely when she reviews my chart before my next visit. And my PCP *loves* them.

I'm waiting to hear back from the doctor on recent test to see if I suffer from vitamin D deficiency. I'm almost always dealing with fatigue issues, but the past few weeks have been ridiculous.
Here's hoping that's all it is. Also, Whole Foods makes gummy vitamins that are D and calcium. They taste like candy.

The doctor can prescribe much higher doses of D than you can get at the store...plus I have a family history of kidney issues and that's where D is metabolized. And yeah, it could be seasonal too. We'll see how the test ends up. I'm also seeing a naturopath next week.

Wish I could afford a treatment to zap this Tinea versicolor once and for all. I can't reach my back to rub cream in and I have no S. O. to do it for me. It's not a major health problem, but I look at my back after a bath and see all these "freckles" that aren't freckles and it bugs me.
I had to look that up. so, imagine you're about to take a 12 hour flight to Tokyo followed by another 8 hour flight to a further destination with barely a 2 hour layover. you will not be able to nap on the flights. what would you do to cope?
i wish! if i was it wouldn't be via Japan, tho. more likely via NZ. no, going the Japan-Singapore route to Malaysia to visit inlaws for a big chunk of November.

do you have problem sleeping on plane ?

yes, i cannot sleep on planes, not even with the aid of a drug. i will also be care-taking a 20 month old and a 4 year old.
- Joe Silence is not dead
i considered stepping in front of a lorry a few times in Malaysia back in 2006, but that was unrelated to the flights. the 12 hour trip to Tokyo is on a 777, which is a bit like a huge Greyhound bus back in economy class. like last time, i plan on getting up for a stroll to the tail every 2 hours to hopefully prevent deep vein thrombosis. and, yes, they NEVER give you enough water on the long-hauls. paper cup in the washroom, glugglugglug! :P

i suppose i'd hoped someone on here with long-haul flight experience might have something i'd missed for coping.

Will you be the sole caretaker of the children? If not, could you power nap on the layover? When I get sleepy and I'm reading, I'll tend to be lulled to sleep. I'd instead do something with movies or a computer game or something because that keeps my mind engaged in a different way and makes it harder to nod off.

i'd cry the whole way there. ;-) naps are the way I cope with most long distance flights.
- pea
my wife and i will be doing the tag-team parenting thing we always do, tho more and more we're working in concert all the time. little kids are very high-maintenance. the layover at Narita will be just enough time to get the bus from one terminal to the other, maybe snag a quick bite and use the head and then board the connecting flight after the security ppl inspect our colons.

Yow. The kids complicate it for sure. I have never taken that long a trip, so this is based on less Xtreme travel. Bring plenty of things to read to and with them. Bring a sketchbook/notebook to draw and play paper games with them. Bring music for everyone and multiple MP3 players with batteries. @joey: i could, but i don't want to be incapacitated...one of my fears on a flight, especially with the kids. i'll phone about it, tho.

Take stuff like baby wipes, diapers, sweets, treats and help to break up the flight with treat-breaks and reading breaks. So you tell your older kid that every hour (or whatever) you will read a story together. It gives you both a focus and helps you to manage the time. In between the reading breaks slot in a walk to the end of the plane and back. In between the walking breaks you could play a little game of I spy or something similar...dividing your time up into managable chunks.
- WorldofHiglet
And good luck. The kids will sleep if you are calm, and if they are asleep then you can relax a bit. Hopefully things will work out ok and you will make it to the other side in one piece.
- WorldofHiglet
@Higlet: very good advice on the childcare side there. that's more or less how we did it last time, tho it's even more important now that we have two. we're also bringing a car seat for the youngest (which will attach to one of the rolling carry-ons between planes) and an umbrella stroller for hauling our 4 year old for the 2.5km of walking through Changi at 5am when the trains are shut down! we need to organise our bags for the kids better this time, that's for certain, cos right now we're over-packing.
- Joe Silence is not dead
Oh, I like Higlet's plan for breaking up the time so it's not One Long Flight From Hell.
- s t e v e
funny thing, the 8 hour flight between Tokyo and Singapore is nowhere near as stressful as the 12 hour leg coming from the US. partly cos JAL's planes and service are SO much better than American Airlines. startlingly so. AA is surly staff that ignore everyone and the planes are stuffy and dark and smell rank. JAL staff are pleasant and attentive and the planes are clean and well-lit and well-maintained.
- Joe Silence is not dead
Being ruthless with your packing is essential - and hard! First time we gave them a backpack each and let them pack stuff but they hardly used any of it and it was a pain handling them all time. WE found it easier to have 2 bags for flight stuff - I handled one and hubby had the other one so we could take things in and out easily from underseat luggage rather than having to stand up and...

I used to be very, very afraid of flying so I really identify with you. I got tied into this job that required flying 2x a week, and during that time I did some mental exercises that helped, I think, along with the sheer boredom of it. I've done a few long hauls too- to Asia, to Europe, all around Europe, back, etc.
- anna sauce
So if I were you I'd buy a book of meditation exercises. Breathing exercises are by far my best method of getting out of panic attacks, adn preventing them from happening. Breathing exercises you can also do while taking care of kids. I do a 3-exhale, 3-hold, 6-inhale (those are beats) exercise, slowly ramping up to 4-3-8, 5-3-10, etc. patterns. There are some other relaxation techniques that help with fear of flying
- anna sauce
As for the duration, I end up hanging out in the flight attendant area. I get coffee, chat with them, make a new friend back there, have a long conversation. Standing, for me, helps the anxiety because I get a lot of muscle tension from being tense, and stretching, etc. helps with that. I know with kids it's harder. We were stuck in a storm on the way to Russia last year, and had...

my CPAP will be hand-carried (medical equipment doesn't count toward carry-on) and we'll have at least two carry on bags, maybe three. one will be a diaper bag. one will be this really neat backpack designed for exactly this type of travelling that includes special straps for attaching to the back of an umbrella stroller (which will be stowed by cabin crew) and one will probly be a duffle.
- Joe Silence is not dead
I also bring busywork, like translating foriegn languages or learning new words- bilingual books, etc. that kind of homework really helps me. movies help, but it's hard to get enough on a device to make it worth while. I end up watching airplane movies.
- anna sauce
OK one last thing- when turbulence starts, which is a panic trigger for me, I do this acting exercise called "sack of potatoes." You literally envision your body, skin, etc. as a sack and your bones, as potatoes. It helps loosen you up, and if you really let go all control and just envision yourself as this bag, it helps ally my fears. It's weird, but it works for me ;)
- anna sauce
Booze does help- but you have to be careful b/c of the dehydration aspect. I also hate getting congested in flight, and alcohol, esp. beer, gets me that way.
- anna sauce
oooh, yah, turbulence...no fun. walking is great for many reasons, including stress relief. i probly won't touch booze til we depart Japan, but if the kids are okay i may just give myself permission to get mildly loaded. i don't normally drink anymore (and won't if i do end up taking Clonazepam cos they do NOT mix) but it would help a bit. more likely i will read and/or listen to music in between trips up and down the aisle.
- Joe Silence is not dead
it's also likely that my oldest, who i'll be sitting next to, will keep me plenty busy!
- Joe Silence is not dead
Oh, I gave this tip to my sis who never flies and is equally afraid- don't do anythign during takeoff. I tend to think a lot of my anxiety is from motion sickness, so if youf ocus on the direction of the plane, until it's in the air, then distract yourself with activities. Stay upright, during turbulence, take your back off the seat, that helps, oddly, too. I think your abdominal muscles compensate for the movement and it's not as strong. You can see I used to spend *a lot* of time thinking about this, ha.
- anna sauce
been there done that, all the time 2 weeks ago. Books are best. Geroge R.R. Martin Fire and Ice Series. For the kids, dont worry set them up with movie system and they will be good to go. You will get to sit on the bulk head so you will get the baby bed that fits in the wall. Plus you have extra room. In terms of Booze I prefer the Bloody Mary, the tomato seems to help and yeah drinks...

If you need clonopin to kick in quickly, let it dissolve under your tongue instead of swallowing. It tastes horrible but it does work fast. A nurse taught me this.

i used to carry liquid vasodilator around that was supposed to be delivered like that...sublingually. i was warned that if i ever had to take it (for heart attack) i should expect to pass out almost immediately.

So have all the geeks left FriendFeed? Reply to this post with where you feel you fall - 'geek' or 'non-geek'. :-) EDIT: I think that's pretty clear, the geeks have *not* left FriendFeed. :-)
a carnival performer who does disgusting acts eccentric: a person with an unusual or odd personality , or an individual with a passion for computers, to the exclusion of other normal human interests. I assume we are using the last definition?
- Brian Sullivan
Geek, but not in terms of tech, rather comic books, etc. :)
- Derrick
You hand in your ticket...And you go watch the geek...Who immediately walks up to you...When he hears you speak...And says, "How does it feel...To be such a freak?"...And you say, "Impossible"...As he hands you a bone
- Greg Guitarbuster
Geek, of course. That's why I don't fit in on other social networks.
- April Russo (app103)
Nerd and Proud™! (which should count as geek)
- Marco Fabbri
@Marco Fabbri: Nerd != Geek. In SML Dictionary, Nerds have no fashion sense and can't talk to people, Geeks generally have a fashion sense and can carry on a conversation relatively ok; nerds usually wear white t-shirts and white sneakers; Geeks generally wear black t-shirts and black sneakers. A classic example: Nerd = Bill gates; Geek = Steve Jobs!
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
depends on what we are geeking out about. if we're talking about music, shoes, spinning, dyeing, yarn, german history, b movies and zombies- then ubergeek.
- Mary Carmen
geek, but not the tech type of geek, more like a geeky nerd
- William Harryman
Geek in some respects. Non geek in others. So...semi geek

- ffcode
@See-ming Lee that is indeed controversial. Anyway as choice was given between geek and non-geek I meant some degree of nerd counts as geek.
- Marco Fabbri
@Marco Fabbri Well I think that all geeks are nerds, but all nerds != geeks. I believe that Set(Geek) includes Set(Nerd) but this is a question I have been thinking about for years now and I don't yet have a conclusion yet. But at least that's where I'm at now!
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
healing my wounded inner geek. i went freak for a while, then artsy-hipster... keeping hints of those, but the foundation is looking mighty geek.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
The way I look at it, most of my friends primarily use Facebook OR Twitter. A few use both, and a few have YouTube Accounts. They don't read RSS feeds or use Google Reader or Digg or StumbleUpon. Therefore, non-geeks cannot see the benefits of this aggregation power (anyone agree or not?)
- Nathan Snyder
Proof that geeks have NOT left FriendFeed? ;-)

Non-geek being converted by the boyfriend.

The movies I will be watching this Halloween are: The Nightmare Before Christmas (because Disneyland made me want to watch it), Monster House, and Beetlejuice.
What kind of candy and what kind of alcohol?
- Katy S
I am being so sad. Staying in so I stay away from both. OK, maybe one teeny glass of blood-colored something . . . Vodka & cassis?
- Amy℠
Put one flavor of Skittles in a bottle of vodka and let it sit for a week. It turns whatever flavor you add (orange or red or whatever) and looks pretty! Then you get candy AND alcohol.
- Rochelle
But Rochelle, I don't have a week! That's a great idea though. Orange for Thanksgiving?
- Amy℠
Or, if you are feeling full of adventure, add the whole bag of Skittles for a generic "fruit" flavor.
- Rochelle
I rarely drink, but today has felt like an alcohol day, so I'm well into this 1.5litres of vodka. I guess it's all down to how you wanna feel tomorrow, lol
- Slappy Line
Well I am more concerned because of my kidney stones, I probably shouldn't drink with them. BUT WHATEVER I LIVE DANGEROUSLY
- Andrizzle Gizzle
Hmm, fair point, but still, it's only pain. :-)
- Slappy Line
God, candy vs alcohol is a really tough one. I would probably go with candy, because GOD I LOVE CANDY.
