I love that Bret, Paul, and Kevin checked in. They probably are looking at their screens and asking "what do we do now?" how about ship some new features before Facebook overlords take you off to do bigger things?

I do like FF and use it almost every day. Wouldn't it be great if FB either left it alone so we can continue to use it as "professionals," or somehow incorporate it into a more "mature" version of FB that didn't have all the annoying, time-wasting apps, games, etc. I'd much prefer a totally customizable FF "wall."

here. anecdote: a friend of mine just signed up for FF this evening. apparently the FriendFeed hype of the last 24 hours pushed him over the top. leaves me wondering whether FF has actually gained users today?it would be a crafty way of marketing the service. I'll wake up tomorrow to discover that there was a problem with the paperwork and the FriendFeed team have had a change of heart.

Count me in even though I was just starting to get hooked. I guess it's time to find a rehab and get all sobered up until the next relapse with some other new addiction. Isn't life grand?

David -- this was a $9.95 session but you can get them for $7.95 and there are also 25% off coupons if you do online check-in prior to your Delta flight. That's an incentive for folks to use that service and offload kiosk use at the terminals. Very savvy marketing by the folks at GoGo and Delta combined.

I recommend FF to some of my clients, and there are some companies and nonprofits with presences here—not like Twitter, but I'll be curious how that will be affected when FB takes over more. Most have FB fan pages, groups and/or causes, too.

Yup, I have blocked all the impersonators now. You will still see them, but I don't see them and they no longer can comment on any of my items.

@scobleizer As far as I can see you have blocked not only the impersonators (who renamed themselves back the moment they found out you have a problem with this) but most of the folks who chatted there.

@Robert, in fact they do speak English. But they also do make fun of Friendfeed and everything that's going on there. You can block them or take part in this fun. ;)

I prefer FF over twitter and facebook, but all my friends are on twitter and/or facebook. Maybe facebook will get it right this time now that it has acquired FF. If they simplify it a bit more without removing functionality. Then I would spend a bit more time on FB. Lets hope all goes well with the merger. If not I'm jumping ship and going over to Google Wave. oh wait, I'm going to go with Google Wave regardless! ;-)

@robert yes they (we will) stay here, I think tat the migration process will take time and after reading @Paul Bucheit, I think that what we all are trying to get even if we don't say it explicitly is to preserve a kind of intimacy (beeing a part of the Huge faceBook community) don't mean that FF community will preserve their intimacy, why should a community be a plan one, (let imagine a community as a set of sub-community) that all.

@Robert RE "I have enough noise in my life. I don't need to have more" - isn't it a lot of noise having 26K subscriptions and 46K subscribers on your frf account? I'm kind of surprised - you create a community that large around yourself, yet when you see a new and unusual activity you just block it right away.
- Множественный Митрич
@Robert, patience? Who's talking about patience? It's about curiosity, not patience. When something strange and unusual happens around you, you can either try to stop it or try to see what it can develop into. You choose to stop - and it stopped. Well, not stopped - just moved to some other place. And do you really know what it was and what it was about to bring you?

@bdlangam From my perspective the #1 tip in this category is: Explore and define "best use" for yourself. Despite potential "finishing" impression of some productive consolidations in this collective-collaborative cognition space, the emergent #cognosphere is still WAY too nascent to assert anything other than initial impressions. March to the beat of your own drum; build your own...

i've used tweetdeck & other air based apps - i'd rather just have a tab open that i can check in on once in awhile - can't afford to "live" in twitter or friendfeed which is what air apps assume you want to do ;)

TwitHive is now my primary Twitter agent. keeps my desktop clean, does most everything that it should quite well. Main bug: in Chrome, it gets confused about the length of your messages when you use the RT function. Good stuff overall.

Interesting. The new iPhone will of course change the comparison, but I haven't heard any rumour about a physical keyboard on the new iPhone, so some comparisons will likely stand.

Many more to come. By the way, the Navy wants to do another trip with social media people. My first recommendation to them? Thomas Hawk. He'd do a lot better than I did. Of course he'd have to drag along a 600 mm F4.0 lens (big ass lens) to get closer than I did. More photos coming in a few minutes (and some videos too).

Wow, it looks really impressive. What about the water? How do you protect it from harmful sea salt water?
- Susan Beebe
Loic: there's nothing like being 10 feet from an F-18 being catapulted off. Wait until you see the video.
- Robert Scoble
Susan: the water is 40 feed beneath the deck. I never even tasted salt. I see more salt in Half Moon Bay. What you have to worry about is hitting lenses when walking up the stairs and jet wash.
- Robert Scoble
On the trip was a former F-18 pilot too, so he helped a lot in our understanding.
- Robert Scoble
Robert - unfortunately you'll never get to see the F-14 at night, which was always something amazing. If possible, get close to an EA-6B on the Cat, it will rattle your teeth and you'll feel it in your gut (I worked on the flightdeck for 10 years as part of the COD crew).
- Vince DeGeorge
Stairwells are steep and narrow. My brother was a Navy Seal on that ship stationed in SD. Very cool rig! He was a medical rescue diver - jumped down out of helicopters to soldiers injured at sea and brought them back up for transport
- Susan Beebe
Vince: I think we saw one of those, but we saw so many planes land and take off that I lost track. I'm back in the hotel. It was one of those experiences that very few people get to have and it totally changed my life. More on how later. It was a great thing to do just after Memorial Day.
- Robert Scoble
Pavan: out of all the experiences I've had, this is the one that sticks in my mind as the most interesting. Both because it was extraordinarily cool, but also because it is a huge responsibility. I was the eyes and ears for a huge number of tax payers, and seeing how their (my) money is being spent is interesting and a large responsibility.
- Robert Scoble
I can tell you - working on the flight deck, the excitement was ALWAYS there... I never got used to it. Of course, it's not exactly somewhere you want to feel comfortable. For any who haven't seen it, go here: http://www.pbs.org/weta... and watch Carrier. It appears they have the full episodes. Memories... now I'm ready to go back in!!!
- Vince DeGeorge
Robert, also remember, that most of that responsibility falls on kids barely out of high school. The military builds character and trains you like no other corporation in the world. A modern day manager with a $3 mil budget? Ha, how about an 18 year old kid that is responsible for a $30 mil dollar aircraft and the lives of those inside?
- Vince DeGeorge
Yes I'm jealous. Why was I not invited??? LOL Awesome you got to Robert. Truly fantastic!
- Sheryl
Those are some stellar shots you got Robert.
- Jason Hansen
This was a PR event put on by the Navy I take it?
- David Lloyd
Show the world what a modern service it is now and how they are all up on blogging and stuff for recruitment? :p
- David Lloyd
Vince: the sailors I talked to didn't like the PBS special. They said they only put on disgruntled employees. Mark: yes, they fly VIPs, bloggers, journalists onto the carrier for these embarks so that they can get the word out about what the carrier is like. Pavan: thanks, I'm still uploading.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I agree - they didn't exactly put on the best sailors, but it did give VERY GOOD insight to what carrier life is like. You have to see through some of the drama (though, believe me - there IS that drama in the Navy). I don't know, I may have a different skew on things. I wasn't what was called "Boat Chuck" - I was aviation, which is a little different world - even further, I was CODs, making it even more so.
- Vince DeGeorge
The video will be up after dinner. I got more than 100 photos up to look at in the meantime.
- Robert Scoble
Robert awesome pix. what lenses did u bring? 70-200 IS, wide angle, 600 mm, can u give us a list of what u used? easier than going into "more properties" on Flickr for a ton of photos
- Elliott Ng
I had a 16-35 F2.8 L Series, a 70-200 F2.8 L Series, and a 600 mm F4.0 L Series. I also had a 50 F1.4 for the night stuff.
- Robert Scoble
Awesome! Sign me up! Love it! Great photos!
- Thomas Hawk
Did they let you shoot anywhere you wanted or were some areas off limits?
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas: only two things were off limits: the nuclear power plant and the room where they were playing war games. Everything else was OK to shoot.
- Robert Scoble
very cool. What a fantastic opportunity to shoot. Loved the photos, faved a bunch of them.
- Thomas Hawk

An inflammatory headline and a non-issue. It boils down to "Twitter may have to provide some financial compensation to Leo Laporte over Leo's ownership of the Twit trademark, if Twitter gets into producing some sort of TV show linked to Twitter." Leo OWNING Twitter doesn't come into it.
- Wayne McDougall
"Twit" as a word, in the same sense as "Twitter," long precedes Leo Laporte's birth. All he's got is a mark relating to "TWiT," an acronym for something unlikely to be confused with Twitter. Laporte's got a "legitimate" claim, but not one likely to succeed. As soon as Twitter gets bought by Google or the like, their defense team will walk all over Laporte.
- Maxwell Kennerly
aye, twit is a word that has existed in the UK for generations. It's a derogative term for someone who is foolish "don't do that you twit".
- alphaxion
I think the context is what matters here - it is questionable whether or not Tiwtter and TWiT when strictly talked aobut in their current usages is confusing - some say yes, and others no. What's certain is that TWiT creates audio and video content - and Twitter is trying to encroach -nay build a BUSINESS around that idea. They're trying to make money using a name speicifically...
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
remember that, on leo's trademark discussion, he wrote the following (quote): "Ev told me that when they were considering names for Twitter they knew about TWiT and decided it didn't matter. In their defense, they had no idea what or how big Twitter was to become. We talked about trademark early on and both agreed there was no conflict _as long as we were in different spaces_. And therein lies the rub. - Leo Laporte"
- sɹǝɥʇɐǝɟʞɔɐןq
Mark - the part that's off is the "using a name specifically trademarked for use in that arena." The "arena" is right, but not the name -- Laporte has no claim to "Twitter" at all, and only a tenuous claim to "twit." He has a registered mark of "TWiT," an acronym which stands for something else. Indeed, another party could possibly use something like "Twit" in their TV show, as long as the context made clear it was separate. A wholly different non-acronym word is a different world altogether.
- Maxwell Kennerly
@Maxwell - but examine what blackfeathers just said, in quote of Leo... and as Chris Yeh pointed out in a comment on the original post - a "moron in a hurry" would most likely confuse the two, particularly since they'd both be in the world of video together. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...)
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
The quote referenced by blackfeathers makes it sound like this is an "Apple Computer" / "Apple Records" situation in which a party using the exact same name in one arena jumped to another. But these names are actually quite far apart, and even if the Twitter folks thought this could be the case, that doesn't bind them. Here's an overview of the legal standard (http://bit.ly/AkPCg )(I've...

@Maxwell, I'll admit I'm not a lawyer, nor have I filed infringement cases personally. As I stated in the comments of the original blog piece (http://www.siliconangle.com/ver2...), I've a great deal of experience in this sort of thing, going back to my teenage years (pasted below).
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Actually, when I was a kid (about 13 or 14), I was a witness in a Federal trademark suit between an ISP called Neosoft and a software maker named NeoSoftware. The ISP was suing the software maker for rights to the name because they said it caused brand confusion. It turns out that the suit was dismissed by the judge because it was revealed during the case that the ISP was planning on...

- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
The bottom line is that the stakes in the game, even when the names are *similar,* and not even the same, are the usage of the name. Rather than go to court, should Leo pursue this, Twitter will likely give Leo points in the name usage on broadcast ventures or points in the company in an out of court settlement rather than risk losing the name entirely. Leo, as has been discovered today...

I don't doubt your expertise -- e.g., you certainly know the market here far better than me -- I just wanted to point out that Laporte's far from a slamdunk, and has some serious obstacles in his path. Although a 'practical' burden is on Twitter as the encroacher, the legal burden would still be on Laporte as plaintiff. I presume money or shares will change hands, not least so Twitter...

Indeed - it's made for a nice conversational diversion this otherwise quiet Memorial Day (and kept my head out of boring FTC disclosure guidelines, where they otherwise would have been). I definitely agree with your final analysis here - it isn't clearcut on either side of the case, but I think there are definite merits to Leo's concerns.

Definitely dark. I gravitate to black... I try other backgrounds but in the end I switch back... Here's my color scheme and layout: www.fossilhuntress.blogspot.com
- Fossil Huntress
Depends on the design, but if readability is important, it should be dark serif text on light background. Reverse type is a bitch for extended reading.

- Michael W. May
I generally prefer lighter motifs...they seem "cleaner" and seem to make me feel like the author is more savvy and informed. I don't know why, but it just does for me.
- Carlton Hackett
I like the look of dark but it's not readable for many, so light is my choice.
- Karoli
Definitely depends on the content. My faboo mama blog will look dumb in black. So do food blogs. Photog blogs in white get ignored by me. Any blog with a orange, green or red background get put on my block list. I prefer black, white, dark blue or dark brown.
- Anika
I prefer dark but I often wonder what my readers prefer. Perhaps I should ask them.
- Jack&Cleo
Your readers, anyone's readers, prefer something easy to read.
- Francine Hardaway
Dark backgrounds with light Text are easier on the eye's and reduce eye strain.
- Aaron Fischer
Dark backgrounds with light text can produce less eye strain for those with slightly less than perfect vision. I am one I those people.
- Dean Clark
I suspect that a lot of (not all) people who complain about light backgrounds have their monitor brightness turned up too high. Contrast should be high, but default brightness of TVs and monitors is too high.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Many, yes, but that's all the more reason for pure white to die a quick and painful death ;)
- Michael W. May
Dark backgrounds with white text are not only less readable for me (and I'm only mildly nearsighted) and give me eye strain. They also can create a sort of strobe effect that triggers migranes. Seriously. I simply won't read a blogspot blog that's done in a reverse light-on-dark scheme.
- nadezhda
I much prefer light text on dark backgrounds. I find it easier on the eyes, and the web is not paper. I don't find it terribly important though thanks to Compiz's Negative plugin that lets me invert colours.
