multi-colored definitely. and the old fat bulbs, not those tiny ones you can hardly see. that's what i grew up with - fat multi-colored bulbs.
- Christa
We always had multi-coloured on the Christmas tree, but my mother was adamantly against anything that blinked or twinkled or did anything cool, so that sort of fun was not to be had. Other small indoor trees we had were decorated mostly with all white bulbs, though.
- Katy S
I cant handle anything that twinkles. I like static lights. Christa, those bulbs were also what my aunt had while i was growing up. We were always afraid the tree would burn down because they got so hot!
- Mary Carmen
I have always liked colored lights. Betsy likes white...thus, we have a pre-lit white tree. UNTIL THIS YEAR, when Eliza broke the tie and we had to add colored lights. I win!
- Jason Griffey
outsiide, i love multi-colored (esp. against teh snow). inside, we have all white, but that's really just cuz they were on sale, and all my ornaments are silvery - so it makes for a very "classic" tree. note: i ain't never "classic".
- jambina
I like all white on the tree. and outside whatever coloured - this year I have all blue on the little shrub. last year it as multi-colour.
- Nathalie
I'm all white on the tree and multi elsewhere at the moment, but I'm not locked into any particular look.
- Michael W. May
Mary - I don't necessarily want them now, but as a kid I did because we were forbidden to have them. One year we colluded with my dad to get a set of lights for the tree that had 8 modes of action. We didn't tell my mom. When she wasn't looking we'd always switch it from no movement to one of the waves or flickers. She was a bit annoyed with us that year. The only thing that saved us was the fact that it had that one option she likes.
- Katy S
Katy, that is hilarious. My mom would never allow that. I can handle slow twinkling, but omg, some of the settings nowadays are like TECHNO.
- Mary Carmen
umm... at work white or blue to match the circ desk. at home i think multi? i don't remember.
- EBJT
She also doesn't like it when my dad and I play the Tales From The Crypt album Have Yourself A Scary Little Christmas. We tend to crank up Deck The Halls With Parts Of Charlie in honor of my dad's older brother, Charlie. We are not allowed to play it in her presence, so when I'm at their house and she leaves, my dad and I turn it on right away.
- Katy S
He use to be a mortician. Morbid humor is always acceptable. :) Actually, some of the funniest people I've ever met have been funeral directors. True!
- Katy S
oh yeah. oncologists tend to be funny too.
- Mary Carmen
Red and white, though not as the result of any serious discussion.
- Brett Kelly
from iPhone
I prefer multi-colored, or a string of a single color. No whites-only strings for me.
- John (bird whisperer)
multicolored on the tree and white outside
- Hedgehog
black (looking at them though, you can see the red filament, does that make them multi?)
- chaz2b
We always had multi-lights, but I've grown to love all white (or blue). I think they are so elegant, and more natural, which I love. I can't stand "moving" and flashing lights. If I wanted a migraine or a seizure I would find another way to get one thanks. LED ftw!!! <3
- Heather Whoapants
I have a single strand of multi-colored randomly flashing (literally - the whole string does not flash together) lights on my tree. They were on our tree when i was growing up, but one year my mom declared that we would have white lights only. My MIL is apparently * adamant* about white lights only. I love th C9 bulbs for putting on my house :)
- ~Courtney F.
We have multicolored LED lights and some awesome purple lights that I can't use now because I can't find replacements for the broken bulbs. White on the fake tree, they are built in.
- Eric - Feed of Dreams
from iPhone
We have multi on the outside bushes, white on the garland hanging at the top of our bookshelves, & red on the (devil) tree
- Amanda
Colorful lights that move in various different patterns. With all the cool stuff you can do with cheap technology these days, why not?
- Dave Roth
We have all white lights this year, but in the years past we've had a combination of red & white.
- tab
Multicolored!!! All white are to light silk tents for weddings and our sorority house for Secret Shindigs.
- ωαřмaiden ☆Team O'Otto☆
Both. And all-blue, all-purple, etc. I use lights year round in lots of ways now though, they were always my fave thing about Christmas. I made flower lights for my room, those are white: http://pics.livejournal.com/lostlo...
- Lo the Baker
its easy I have two little trees that belonged to my parents..........one is in multi and one in white.....so no fights here...........:)....bit growing up it was always multi on the tree
- VALZ looking @ LB
our tree is strung with all red lights, and i'm a little concerned it might look kind of brothel-ish, but we temper it with white-light strung garland around the windows and doors. i love our house decorated for christmas!
- Nancy Sp♠id
on the tree, all white. no blinky. outside - colors, blinky, whatever you can find. inflatable santa on a motorcycle, whatever.
- Morgan
multicolored outside, white on tree inside, but i like to mix it up. i would alternate on the tree, but it's prelit.

Married and divorced twice, w00t, go me. Currently single, sharing custody of five children, housing a dog and a cat. in a relationship, the nature of which is complicated (but good).
- Que Sarah Sarah
Not only single but living with parents. ...ouch!
- Mike Cavaliere
I'll be in that boat soon, Mike. Maybe we can start a special room here on FF for that. Oy...
- Spidra Webster
The room should have started 3 and a half months ago. ...double ouch! But I've found it's important to remind yourself of the world outside in this situation. Make whatever contact you can. If that means a special room in Friendfeed devoted only to boredom and self-pity, well, consider me on board.
- Mike Cavaliere
Soon to be married...don't believe in sin, so can't live in it.

Now, Im confused....does this mean I should stop posting pics of myself or not? I don't do it for validation and I don't do it because I'm vain. I thought I was doing it to share a bit more of my world with people......perhaps I was wrong????
Who told you to stop posting pics of yourself? They can fuck off.
- tab
fuck the haters. I love saying hi to my friends visually, and I love that you let me.
- Jenica
Oh for fuck sake, if they, whomever *they* may be are too insecure, that's their issue not yours. I can't speak for everyone, but I enjoy seeing a glimpse into your life, it makes mine a little less mundane, keep it up love.
- Scott(Moo bitches!)
Im just reading the discussion and honestly, I do it because its fun and they make me, and hopefully other people, laugh. It comes from a happy place.
- Mary Carmen
You really think this is the best time for this discussion? *hides thread*
- lris
Yeah, because what the world needs is *less* happiness and smiles. Seriously, Mary Carmen, who are these fools, so I can block them now and get it over with?
- Steven Perez
I come to suspect there is drama happening somewhere else that I'm uninvolved in, but let me reiterate: You're making some of your friends very happy. Keep doing that, if you're so inclined.
- Jenica
I really don't care....I was sorta making light of it. Of course everyone wants validation, but, speaking only for myself, that is not my motivation. So, Im just gonna do my thing. And now Im gonna get a haircut. And I will post what it looks like when I get back!
- Mary Carmen
Keep posting the pictures. Half the reason I subscribed to you was to see what sweet shoes you are wearing on any given day.
- Amanda
I can't speak for Iris, but when someone posts about feeling inadequate and unattractive when comparing themselves to photos on FF, that seems like a bad time to have this conversation. Jenica, glad to hear that, because I was thinking "fuck those people" was incredibly harsh. Lastly "I'm confused" is almost always code for "I'm about to passively agressively rip into someone." Way to make someone else's unhappiness and shame about you, MC.
- Steve Beeblebrox
Yes Steve, because you know, that is what I am all about
- Mary Carmen
Apparently I've missed a thread somewhere...
- FFing Enigma
What I was making light of was the assumption that people post lot of pics because they are either vain or insecure. There didnt seem to be a middle ground. That was my point, I guess made terribly.
- Mary Carmen
Whatever. people taking what happens on the INTERNET seriously cracks my shit up.
- ωαřмaiden ☆Team O'Otto☆
OK, that I did not get. And I suppose the people commenting after the fact mostly weren't familiar with that thread. And Colleen, give me a break. The Internet is people.
- Steve Beeblebrox
Steve - come on. Half the internet is people. The other half is made up characters people live vicariously through ;)
- ωαřмaiden ☆Team O'Otto☆
Steve, having suffered myself with the feelings expressed in the original post, I can tell you, that was not what I was commenting on. I was commenting on what I wrote above.
- Mary Carmen
OK, Mary. I guess I misread you. Sorry about that, but going directly from the other thread to this one it seemed insensitive.
- Steve Beeblebrox
@Matthew - I was just having the same moment. Man, go to lunch for 1 hour....
- Jennifer Dittrich
Well, see, there's this issue of what name an ILS vendor should have and whether it disrespects librarians, and from that some speakers feel that rock videos shouldn't include too many of their own pictures, and so... no, I'm afraid FFdrama's got even more plots than Desperate Housewives.
- Walt Crawford
when you say "does this mean" what do you mean by 'this'?
- Chris Heath
I'm the first one to unsub from someone who takes a photo of every aspect of their life, but Mary Carmen, yours haven't had that ... effect on me. Not sure why, just haven't. Post away.
- anna sauce
Mary DON'T stop posting pictures of yourself. Don't let people get to you. I think Aden had some other issues going on. I think she'll be back. I hope she does. I want to see her snails. :)
- Mol, FF Music Lover
Thanks y'all, I appreciate the honesty. In retrospect, I should have been less snarky. Communication FAIL.
- Mary Carmen
I keep coming in on threads at the tail end of the drama. Hard to make sense of it but it does keep me awake on late Friday afternoon in the office. Hopefully everyone can make up and be happy though.
- Jan Ole Peek
It's YOUR feed. Post whatever you want. If others don't like it, they can block or hide - that's what those features are for.
- Amy℠
And besides, what's wrong with validation anyway? Isn't that what friends are for - to validate you?
- Amy℠
'There's only one thing that I know how to do well, and I've often been told that you only can do what you know how to to well, and that's be you. Be what you're like. Be like yourself.' I can't say I understand today but I do understand that perceptions do not equate reality. Be your own truth :)
- Nikki D.
Posts with pictures are much more interesting . . . what a nerve telling you what to have in your feed . . .

I don't like deleting stuff because I think it creates more problems than solutions, but Im gonna disable comments because I think its time.

Over here, on the whole my students prefer online, courts are getting happier with materials online and a lot of firms (i think) would prefer online over a load of looseleaf publications. I've passed the question to a law librarian mailing list too :)
- Pete
We tend to stick to print as much as possible, simply because the court wants their opinions cite-checked with print resources.
- Amanda
Amanda- I think that applies here, to some extent, with vocational courses- i.e. the practical ones. A tutor told me today thought that some courts will take PDFs of case reports.
- Pete
Pete- While my court has accepted the 21st century in some ways, they are still slightly backwards when it comes to the library. Of course, the 3 separate goals/missions of the library that conflict with each other & the politics between different court departments don't really help us either.
- Amanda
Oh I hear you :) My law courses here are undergraduate academic ones, so there's not a lot of contact with courts as yet- but we do keep an eye on what courts do in this regard.
- Pete
I don't get why some folks plug in things to FriendFeed but then never comment on their own feed items or those of others. Did they just forget they set up a FriendFeed account?
Amen! I know several people like that. They feed in their tweets, their facebook, their whatever but I often see the item here 1st or it is easier to comment/discuss here so I do. Then I never get a response. If you aren't going to (generally) engage here then don't feed it in. And do not make me figure out where I'm *supposed* to comment. Because I will just stop trying to engage with you since you don't intend to engage.
- Mar₭ Liŋdŋer
I suppose I should just unfollow those folks, but some of them are feeding in really good stuff, so I guess it does give me an easy way to keep tabs on what some people are thinking about lately.
- Stephen Francoeur
Besides - we can have a conversation about their stuff even if they're not here...
- Cameron Neylon
When I first set up an FF account, I didn't really get it. I thought it was just some kind of alternate aggregator. Then I checked back weeks later when someone mentioned it and was shocked and disturbed to find comments on my entries.
- Steve Beeblebrox
i often forget to check on *my* friendfeed stuff (the stuff I'm feeding in here) for comments, etc, so that could also be what happens
- ~Courtney F.
A couple of my friends 'tried it out' and then never came back. I don't necc want to unfollow them though in case they decide to actually come back... OR DO I?
- Jason (not an Argonaut)
Also- I was once asked why I comment on my own twitter feed once.. of course the answer is that I am more of a ffeep than a tweep, but maybe some people with ff accounts think the same way about not commenting on their own stuff? No accounting for not commenting on others stuff though.
- Jason (not an Argonaut)
I have a name for these people: "people who I might have subscribed to at one point" :)
- Brett Kelly
I don't mind that much anymore. I see it as a way to get people's total life stream in the medium of my choice (FriendFeed). That way, rather than using imaginary friends, when I comment, it is seen by others and can be responded to. I follow Andy Ihnatko here because I get all of his stuff, but he has never commented etc. I still find having him piped in here valuable, While no...

Yes, I remember sometime last year, a lot of peeps on Twitter set up FF accounts, but never used the service.
- phil baumann
In the beginning FF didn't even have any commenting. It was the place where people could centralize and aggregate all their feeds/services. Maybe some people use FF just for that.
- Jemm
I tend to "live" on Twitter and am forced by others to check Facebook frequently, so sometimes forget to come over here. I remember about once a week, which is a good thing. Once in a while Friendfeed sends me an email to say people have actually commented on my stuff, which is a nice courtesy. OTOH that is exactly how I treat Plaxo. I feed a pile of content in, connect with people who want to connect, but never actually go in their on my own.
- Connie Crosby
FF needs to default to enabling email notifications on comments to your feeds. Sure, many might turn it off right away, but it would serve to point out to people that hey, others are commenting on what you're doing.
- Otto
Samuel, can you even get a feed for comments on your posts? That seems like a no-brainer. I know Jessamyn was looking for that, because she isn't looking for another online discussion community (since she's already the den mother for a huge one) but would like to know when people comment on her stuff.
- Steve Beeblebrox
You can set up notification--look under settings
- Hedgehog
yes just set it up and never played with it. Honestly I find it frustrating for newbies. Giving it a try though and I think I see how powerful it is
- cheapsuits
I have emails to comments on my own posts, and I get IM notifications for updates to posts I have commented on. Is there any way to get emails for other people's posts that I have commented on? (for when I am not online)
- Jason (not an Argonaut)
Speaking as a frequent lurker, sometimes poster, & a very rare commenter, when I first set-up FF, I checked it constantly & commented sometimes. However, I found it to be a bit of time-suck, & eventually dropped off the grid. I now monitor it off of my iGoogle page. I may try becoming more involved at some point, but I'm trying to find the balance between monitoring my online networks & RL.
- Amanda
well like many tools people use them for different purposes - I'm not at all surprised that people use FF for a different purpose than you seem to think it serves. i.e. it isn't just about leaving comments it can also be about consolidating lots of your own personal feeds (for yourself as well as for others) and/or about reading lots of other people's consolidated feeds. Across the whole web only a minority of people (a very very small minority) leave comments vs a far, far larger majority who read content

Honestly, I set up a friendfeed account awhile ago just to have all my online activity aggregated into one place that I could then import elsewhere, like facebook, just so people could keep track of all the things I was up to outside of facebook, and friend me there if they wanted. I find that my facebook friends tend to be oblivious of online communities outside of facebook, and this...

I use friendfeed to search my own stuff. I do read the "best of...", "my discussions", but admittedly unless i have a lot of free time it's impossible to watch the stream in real-time basically because I dumped almost every subscription into the main feed.
- aarontay
Remember that participation on any site goes in peaks and valleys no matter what. I just came off a 4-6 week period where I was commenting very little on Friendfeed. Sometimes your worklife doesn't permit heavy engagement.
- Jill O'Neill
Doesn't bother me. I use FF as an RSS reader too so I like seeing their updates here even if they don't comment. But they should subscribe to email notifications. It would be nice to see a reply if someone has a question about a post.
- Lori Reed
Thanks Abigail ;) I don't think I've messed with those since they were improved to that extent . really amazing

Yeah, thanks Abigail. I never knew they had done that. I don't really use them since I'm on FF 24/7, but good to know.

- David Rothman (☤)
The first day of my 4th year English Honors class in HS, my teacher gave us a pop spelling quiz. When she returned the next day, she asked how I expected to get through life with such poor spelling skills. I told her by using a dictionary.

I think the problem is that they're too familiar with spell-check. They had to do this in-class w/o their computers.
- Meredith
Maybe they're writing their papers in lolspeak?

I once graded exams for a music appreciation class (ie. easy A if you show up). In a class of about 500, I gave 3 students a zero out of 100. One complained, so I asked the prof to grade it. He gave the student a 3 out of 100. It really jaded me as to how much a percentage of students see university as a game to test the limits of B.S.

LinkedIn is primarily for professional networking. By joining a group that I'm not actually a member of, I feel that I would be mis-representing myself.
- Amanda
Ah, I see. I have a LinkedIn profile, but I'm not really down with the culture. So it doesn't have to do with the interactions between people in the group, it has to do with how it looks to potential employers, etc? I guess that makes sense. I guess it's also why I don't have much use for LinkedIn.

I don't use it very much either for the same reason.

most of what I'm getting out of it (granted, I skimmed) is that higher education prevents you from talking to people who aren't as educated as you are. That's kind of a problem for librarians, seeing as how we should be able to talk to anyone who comes to the ref des.
- ~Courtney F.
I think it goes beyond librarians relating to patrons. The author implies that Ivy League students are the ones most likely to reach the upper levels of management in business and government. They will be our bosses. Yet they are losing their ability to work outside an established system. Librarians tend to think outside the box when trying to find new ways to serve our patrons. How will we as librarians present these ideas to people are not used to looking beyond what was previously done?
