There can be Only One. And that One is Nine. And I am the Mom of Nine. And lo it snowed that day as a sign that the world would never be as it was before. And my world wasn't. And Nine has been running late ever since.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Maaaaaaaaaaaaate! (you won't get this unless you've seen "Men Behaving Badly")
- Vicky
I was chatting with a random stranger on Omegle.com and he was from the UK and he said, "hold on, mate, my mobi's ringing" and I FELT LIKE I WAS IN A JAMES BOND MOVIE. In all seriousness, it made me want to travel and get out of my southern california ghetto.
- Derrick
:) You have my permission, Derrick old mate :) (and I really miss ppl saying that and 'moby' instead of cell....*sigh*)
- WoH: Minding her Steves
LOL @ "James Bond movie" comment :) Was it the young Sean Connery on the beach of Dr. No´s island ? (which would fit Alex´s accent) :)
- ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
I've watched far too many documentaries to call anyone mate. And that's after living in the UK for five and a half years. I just don't feel right around the word.
- Richard A.
Hehe, Derrick. Is "pal" or "buddy" the American alternative? :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I lived in the UK for a long time - and much prefer using the word mate/s - also love the word bollocks - very versatile :)
- Patrick Jordan
Hah, we need an Australian friendfeed! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Kol, I find myself using 'dude' a lot. But then I was born and raised in Southern California. Patrick, let's do it, mate!
- Derrick
I'm a UKer and I love the way Aussies say Mate. My mate Karronnie from LA makes me laugh all day with his awesome accent. Need to get to the states to impress the laddies with my posh english/Bond accent
- Toby Graham
Allrighty - Matefeed - or MF for short :)
- Patrick Jordan
ahh, bollocks...Patrick has just reminded me of how great that is....as a word. To use.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
good on ya mate. ;o) less bollox worrying what other numptys will think ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Love using feck and fecking as well. And yeah, bollocks is just so versatile - can mean anything from great (as in 'the dog's bollocks') to rubbish - as in my reply to dopey Twitter spammer touting how they'd 'discovered' a crappy ripoff iPhone unlock site - told him I was delighted for them but site was a loada bollocks :)
- Patrick Jordan
Tosser is another very good Brit word ...
- Patrick Jordan
Wanker is good too, but tosser always feels like it can be said with a bit more venom (often with a close cousin of fecking just in front of it) :)
- Patrick Jordan
I want to start mating with some of my friends, but fear much resistance to this idea.
- Morgan
Look, pal, don't start on me with all that old bollocks, you bloody tosser
- Ian May
as long as I can still fiddle with myself, I don't care what it's called.... :-)
- Morgan
Perhaps you should go the whole hog and call your friends "me old china" which is short for the cockney rhyming slang for mate, china plate. Cheers Geez !
- Paul Nash
OH, if we're doing rhyming slang, I like 'bristols' ...
- Patrick Jordan
Derrick, of course - dude - how come I forget that one, it's in so many US movies. Cheers, mate!
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm just trying to think of all the various alternatives I've been called to "mate": "chap", "fella", "geeza", "matey", "bloke". Can we think of any others? :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Tonight I bought the King James Bible, The Complete Works Of Shakespeare, Tarzan of the Apes, and Dracula for a total under $10. Ask me if I love my Kindle.
I wish I could! I can't even seem to manage reading one right now.
- Penguin
I usually read three or four books at a time, per week.
- Steven Perez
Steven, do you leave different books in different locations? Like I have the one at work, one upstairs, and one downstairs right now. Different books for different rooms.
- Nine Ferdinand
I do that, too. I currently have a bedroom book, a bathroom book (okay, this is currently the New Yorker), and an in-my-messenger-bag book. I don't feel right unless I'm in the middle of at least two or three.
- Jandy
Absolutely! I was just thinking that tonight as I sat down to read... I've done it a few times before but I think it ends up taking longer overall instead of reading one at a time...
- Shawn Duffy
from twhirl
I think I have 5 books in process, plus two fic series and a podfic. :-)
- Jessi
I'm reading four right now. That's how I always roll
- Shevonne
ROFL: LiveJournal.com is currently unavailable due to emergency maintenance. Don't worry, this has nothing to do with our recent company layoffs! It's a technical problem, not a lack-of-personnel problem.
Thank you for your patience.
NOW it's Thanksgiving! I have eaten mashed pototoes, gravy and sauerkraut (it's a Baltimore thing) and listened to the 42nd annual playing of Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant".
I am starting to resent my car - enough so I may actually give it up and go with Biking and Public Transportation to get me around (both of which are excellent here in Boulder, CO)
- George Smith
@Jeremy not hacked but it seems do better when it's hot and I do a lot of hwy driving.
- Steve Rubel
showoff....LOL...yes I am just jealous.
- R. Ferguson
This is the wrong metric. What Steve didn't tell you is that his Prius has an 80-gallon tank. :-)
- Louis Gray
I set no records with my 350Z Roadster but enjoyed driving in to work today
- James Joyner
@Louis - HA! I had a mental image of a Prius towing a small u-haul for its gas and battery.
- Yolanda
Wrong Louis - you know how some cars are using cleaned food oil to power their cars? Steve is using FriendFeed for his - the more postings you make here, the faster the car goes - that's why he can't use it in the middle of the night!
- Allen Stern
Friend says: "If he had a 1992-1995 Honda Civic VX, or a 2001 Honda Insight, he could have done even better in terms of mileage and emissions !!!" Think this is true?
- Kathleen Mazzocco
Someday I'm going to get me a Prius.
- Thomas Hawk
I'd rather get a Smart or a MINI diesel-hybrid. Design is much better and they're more fun to drive.
- Raoul Pop
That's fantastic! I'm renting a Prius to head up to Portland with from San Fran so that should help save us some major costs along the way
- dbcohen
I'm driving my Vespa a lot more than my Prius. Now that's fuel efficiency.
- Matt McGinnis
I told my wife I was thinking about a scooter, and she said, "Great! Then I can use it sometimes, too!" >sigh< I don't wanna share.
- Ha3rvey (F please!)
if only the prius was made for tall people, I wonder if I'd fit in a Tesla
- clarke thomas
That's not necessarily that big of an accomplishment. I can drive about 200 highway miles on a quarter tank with my '03 Hyundai Elantra.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
I've had my Prius for 3 1/2 years. I've never had a tank average more than about 43 mpg and my average tank is more like 39-40 mpg. Any tips for improving?
- Amy Worley
Also, I'd like to add that comparing miles per tank isn't a good comparison. The Prius has a smaller tank than most cars. When mine is blinking empty I'm lucky to get 9 gallons in there. Usually less.
- Amy Worley
Okay, I'm breaking my FF radio silence to reply here - howdyoudothat? And why do our Priuses drive better on hwy?
- Matt
So a 45 MPG Honda Civic would still have dirtier emissions than a Prius right? Also I have to say we frequently get 50 MPG with our Prius. Am waiting for a 90 MPG Prius.
- Kathleen Mazzocco
From Boing Boing Gadgets: "For what he's done to Star Wars, George Lucas met a poetic fate at last weekend's Star Wars Celebration in Japan. The original Star Wars films were preserved like this for decades, until George Lucas unzipped his fly and thawed them out in 1997 to muck around with. Twenty years from now, if we all cross streams, we can probably return the favor."
- Mark Trapp

If only they could have done this before '97...
- Jason Carreira
Although I think the Star Wars re-release was overdone, the other two are tolerable enough (except for the removal of the Ewok celebration song at the end of Jedi). You may think this is blasphemy but it has more to do with the fact that I haven't seen the originals for so long that I can't really tell the difference except in the first one.
