Robert Scoble
How generations change: my son, tonight, after seeing something new from Google told the team "I'm not like my dad, I don't have a web site."
This is from a 15-year-old who is very expert with world of warcraft, has a MySpace page, a Twitter account, a friendfeed account, is very active on Mac Rumors, etc. - Robert Scoble
He is on more of the Internet than probably 9 out of 10 humans alive and he defines himself to a Google team by not owning a web site. Interesting. - Robert Scoble
you should make one for him. - Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
Making websites is time consuming and, in my opinion, not necessary if you simply need a place to publish to the web, talk with friends and get yourself out there. - Brandon Titus
Renting vs owning in real estate terms? - Micah
Alfredo: the unspoken message is that his generation doesn't need a web site. They'll still be a major part of the Internet. - Robert Scoble
Its the same with my younger relatives... They have a far more natural approach to the new media "So do you kids use the Internet regulary?" - "No..... Not that much?" - "So what do you do when you go online" - "facebook, youtube, myspace, for school, for work..." - "how often do you check facebook?" - "hmmm few times A day" - Andreas Klinger
How many teenagers want to (admit to) be like their dad? - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
It took me back to how I found my doctor. She's #1 on Yelp but yet had never been there. The world is changing and it no longer is only about having a website. - Robert Scoble
Rob: there's some of that in what he was trying to say, yes. His generation wants to be "more with it" than the previous. But I think there's something deeper going on. The 2010 Web isn't about owning a web site anymore. - Robert Scoble
He'll change his tune when someone with his name does something controversial and it's #1 on Google. - Mark
Sounds like the teenager asked by Don Tapscott ("Wikinomics") about why she was not using email to communicate with friends. Reply: "Hmm ... email. That would be the sort of thing you'd use to send a thank you letter ... to your friend's ... parents!" - John W Lewis
Mark: have you checked how fast friendfeed items are showing up on Google lately? I have. You don't need a blog or a web site to be on Google anymore. - Robert Scoble
John: exactly. - Robert Scoble
I think that domains will become mostly for business and the like while personal profiles will be controlled by social networks, profile sites (Google profiles) etc. - Brandon Titus
@Robert maybe - or maybe it's about owning an identity you control which may indeed look like a website but function as an identity broker owned by the user - Chris Saad
Some one still has to create the websites though. :-) - Jesse Stay
Can I get out of making a website for my teenage son with these arguments? - Anita Hunt
Chris: translation: own a Facebook profile. ;-) - Robert Scoble
But does the _you_ own the Facebook profile? - Micah
Your son has probably realized that most personal websites are never seen. - Trine Curtis
I too agree that the new generations do not need a web site. What they need instead is a presence on this Interweb. This can be achieve in many other more effective means than a personal web site; in the traditional sense. - Vinko
If you want to seed control of the social web to facebook then sure. Or maybe the next generation identity hub will be as distributed and open as a web-server - Chris Saad
I have more ego than he. I'll be damned if I'm going to let Facebook own me and my profile. meh. - Karoli
Micah makes a good point about renting vs owning. Also, some people just want communication, others will want permanence (that they own and control). I still suspect that as new generations age they will still want to create more of a legacy on their own domains. - Tinfoil 2.0
Or does Facebook own it (in the possession is 9/10 of the law sense) - Micah
It's the difference between having a web presences and a website... Just because I don't own my home doesn't mean I'm not a citizen. - Johnny
It was never about having a website. It never will be. It will always will be using the right tools to reach the right people. People that you care about and people that care about you. - Akshay Dodeja
Chris: his real identity is on MySpace. That's where his friends hang out and he's asked me not to link to his MySpace profile. Why not? Cause then all "my friends" will show up there. :-) - Robert Scoble
It's all about getting the most out of the web. If your own website doesn't do it but a Facebook profile does, then by all means don't do your own website. Marketing still isn't dead though - act on results. - Jesse Stay
The new generation's presence on the web will be fluid. They will not have one place where they blog, post photos or share their thoughts. It will transform as the technology transform. - Vinko
Akshay: exactly. That was his message to me. Plus there was a tinge of "that blogging thing is so dead." Heheh. - Robert Scoble
MySpace, Facebook, these are all nice walled gardens like AOL before them - but eventually the rest of the web will become just as rich and inviting as the walled gardens - and not because Facebook Connect. - Chris Saad
Facebook Connect is a great proof of concept, but the real solution will be based on open standards just like the web is based on TCP/IP and HTTP - Chris Saad
Chris: Facebook will be forced to open up. Why? Because Google will show them the money is in search and to do search, even in the real time web, you need to open up. - Robert Scoble
Robert, sounds like there's an opportunity to show him why it could be useful, if not now, perhaps in the future for him. - Jesse Stay
We'll be ripe for a backlash in a few years, especially if services don't keep moving in the direction of data portability. - Tinfoil 2.0
Robert: I have tried to many times to start a blog. Failed each and every time. Now I am trying different things and its working in some ways :) - Akshay Dodeja
Actually it's friendfeed that's going to show them that, but Google will be recognized by most of the world and Google definitely is moving to make sure that they are a player in the real time web. - Robert Scoble
No Facebook will open up because Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and others are working actively to dilute their lock on the social graph. It's in google's interest to continue to erode Facebooks monopoly so they can continue to index the social web - Chris Saad
Chris: sorry, that's a side show. The real action is going to happen in search. Or, something associated with filtered display. - Robert Scoble
The community has an opportunity to work with the 'loosers' and the startups to ensure that we don't crown a new king, but rather to push the web as the ultimate platform - Chris Saad
Facebook only competes with Google on the private web. Until they offer indexed, public search they will never be able to compete side-by-side with Google. They only offer a subset of what Google provides right now. - Jesse Stay
Awesome to see this conversation in "real time" - David Damore
Chris: the REAL money is NOT on the social graph. I can see this so clearly. Very few can, though. - Robert Scoble
@robert the real money is (imho) not in search but in knowing about the user - search is just yet the best way to know about him/her - facebook could deliever social enhanced adwords to the internet - Andreas Klinger
I'm not arguing about that - but if Facebook was left unchecked then they could own the new social search and monetizing the user not the page. That's why Google will work hard to erode Facebook's monopoly to ensure they stay in the game - Chris Saad
Andreas: that's what search looks like in the future. - Robert Scoble
Chris: true, but Google is NOT going to leave Facebook unchecked. Facebook needs to move much faster than it is, actually. - Robert Scoble
@Robert the real value is in the stream and being able to index it - which Google can't do with the Facebook feed - Chris Saad
Users are not monetizeable, by the way. Intent and other "about to consume" gestures are. I want an icecream is monetizeable. Eating an ice cream is not. - Robert Scoble
Eating chocolate icecream every wed IS - Chris Saad
It means you like dairy, chocolate and sweets on wed - Chris Saad
APML.org - Chris Saad
@ Chris Saad: +1 - David Damore
@Robert "i know you could now want an ice cream" is worth even more imho - Andreas Klinger
Chris: that's an "about to consume" gesture. Agreed. :-) - Robert Scoble
The real value is in being able to index the *entire* web, and knowing each user that is searching that entire web. Facebook isn't anywhere near being able to do that. - Jesse Stay
Andreas: or, if you are Gary Vaynerchuk you can make me want a merlot-flavored ice cream. That's worth the most. :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert: :) - Andreas Klinger
Jesse: Facebook has an index that Google can't get to and it pisses off Google. - Robert Scoble
@Robert Look forward to debating this with u in person tmr at 6pm - Chris Saad
Isn't the idea of social profiles a search to figure out what a user wants next, now? Like how people visit car websites before buying an automobile? - David Damore
Robert, Google has many indexes Facebook can't get to as well - Gmail, Orkut, Docs, Apps, many more... - Jesse Stay
But wait, surely he does have a web site, a blog, etc.? They are his Facebook page! - John W Lewis
@Jesse which is why Google, Yahoo, Microsoft etc are still in the game - the notion that 'Facebook has won' is just valley hype - Chris Saad
With the kind of information that Google is tracking isn't Google in the best place to monetize our conversations? - Vinko
There are 2 things we're talking about here - the "private web" and the "public web". Facebook has one. Google has both. - Jesse Stay
No we're talking about the document web vs. the Social web :) - Chris Saad
Chris, Google has both of those as well. - Jesse Stay
@Jesse agreed - Google is still going very strong - and should/will buy FF and Twitter to strengthen their position - Chris Saad
I dont like facebook, to me its a lot of social drama... - sergio luna
Jesse: Google's Infos about the Socialgraphs are too fuzzy. Gmail is like my telephone calllist - not my telephone adressbook - Andreas Klinger
Chris, or, just strengthen one of their existing products to compete. Google Chat stands out to me. - Jesse Stay
Andreas you should see my Google Voice address book. It wouldn't take much to connect that all together. - Jesse Stay
@Andreas Google's graphs are super active. Noise for google = pointers to the signal - that's what they do best - Chris Saad
Short question: am i the only one thinking that Social Widgets (Facebook Apps at external Sites) combined with an Advert System is an most interesting thing to come ? - Andreas Klinger
@Jesse their best bet is Gmail and Address book integrated with FriendFeed - Chris Saad
I don't like Facebook either. Now people I thought I'd left behind 20 years ago are finding me again. Yay. But more importantly, someone said ice cream. - Trine Curtis
Jesse: Yet, in my network, Skype Chat is much more widely used than Google Chat. - John W Lewis
Chris, agreed - there's a reason Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed all let you import your Gmail contacts. They want Google's private web. - Jesse Stay
@Andreas No you're not - If Facebook owns the social graph/stream then they will try to own the widgets and ad units - that's why the rest of the web needs to provide a viable alternative so that there is no new monopoly. - Chris Saad
I think that Google will strengthen it's social system by bringing in contact finding through the social graph from services like FriendFeed, Twitter, and maybe Facebook and clearing out the noise. Their contact manager or whatever will be strengthened once they have a real Google Chat, Google Voice, and Gmail working together. - Brandon Titus
I love coming over to FriendFeed to always see an amazingly active thread going on in the Scobleverse!! - Jason Pollock
in my network microsoft msn is the leader...neither skype or google chat are as strong - sergio luna
John, I'm talking about strength of the social graph in each one. Skype doesn't hold a finger to Google's contacts. - Jesse Stay
Sergio, agreed - Microsoft also has a very big potential to compete. I'd say they're more a threat to Google than Facebook right now in this area. - Jesse Stay
All of these platforms have their advantages - the point is they are all social services and should inter operate for the benefit of the user - and benefit the bottom line of the companies that make it happen - Chris Saad
(Meta-point: this conversation IS the live web in action, but how does it scale? What happens to the quality of conversation if the rate of commenting on this topic exceeds my reading speed?) - John W Lewis
Then again, in the competition for people, once you're indexing every person with web access, you also have access to their lives, websites, and personal data. That's much more powerful than an anonymous index of every website on the planet. Facebook could have a chance. - Jesse Stay
This conversation is a byproduct of the the live web - but it's not much more than an indexable chatroom. The status updates and feeds that generate this conversation are the real interesting part - Chris Saad
@Jesse that's Facebook's play - and that's why Google and others are working to dilute the monopoly (a monopoly of mindshare at least) - that's why the community at large has an opportunity to support an open approach - Chris Saad
During times of change, we have an opportunity to ensure the outcome is open - open means innovation can surge ahead at the nodes instead of being controlled by a central authority - Chris Saad
Chris, at the same time indexing each individual rather than website could be more advantageous in the end. Google's not doing that quite as well as Facebook. That's not to say they won't, and they're definitely making progress at the moment. Google doesn't necessarily publish what they're tracking about you. Facebook does, via the live stream when you log in - which is more open per se? - Jesse Stay
For an interesting look at the cross-section of marketing / customer behaviour (mostly off-line, but the web is part of the story) and obsession, check out this documentary on contesters ("professional" contest participants) - just saw it on a plane ride http://www.cbc.ca/doczone... [Interestingly, when I searched for this documentary, I found the guy who pitched the... more... - Micah
Jesse by this argument is google "publically tracking for you that you publish your webpage" - Andreas Klinger
I'm checking out guys - nice chat :) - Chris Saad
Jesse, its just different type of technology you use - Stream.put or Ftp.put - Andreas Klinger
History will repeat! I started with email on CompuServe and did not communicate with others on other services, then discovered "internet mail". As with hardware, software, email and now social media, the architecture of vertical silos will gradually transform into horizontal layers ... from below! Only then does the "network effect" really start! - John W Lewis
Andreas, do you know everything Google has tracked about you? What about all the Analytics tracking on each website you visit combined with data they've learned about you elsewhere? With Google, there's no way to opt-out without just killing your internet connection. At least with Facebook, it's opt-in. Google, IMO, has the potential to be much more evil than Facebook. That is, unless Facebook enters the open web arena. - Jesse Stay
Jesse, this tracking is not public on facebook neither - Andreas Klinger
Jesse, true Google is big enough to pass the last frontier point of relationship to reality - Andreas Klinger
Andreas, I know almost everything Facebook is tracking on me because they at least publish most of it via my stream. True, I don't know everything, but I know a lot. Not only that but they give me controls on what they can do with what they're tracking. I can't do that with Google. - Jesse Stay
Jesse, the stream info is your active part not your passive part - Andreas Klinger
Jesse anyway i think we are talking about the same :) - Andreas Klinger
Ok gotta go for a slow-real-life Meeting - cya! - Andreas Klinger
I really think its not about who will conquer what i.e. google, facebook, etc... I really believe all this players are the basics, like the old economic scheme, I think we are going to evolve and use all this sites & technology in a very diverse and sophisticated form, kind of like what the brand Starbucks is to the old industry of coffee. google, facebook etc. are the industrial plants of our new digital era. - sergio luna
Andreas, agreed, but I can still opt in to Facebook. I can't opt-in or opt-out of Google completely. I'm just saying it's not all about "open" like Google would like you to think. That's just their Marketing play, and we're all falling for it. - Jesse Stay
Jesse, 100% agree - Andreas Klinger
Are we forgetting something? Facebook, Google, ... ARE websites. It is just about the level at which we engage. I do not need to build my own car to drive on the road; I can buy one, it is cheaper. But if I buy a Lamborghini or Porsche, I can still interact (inc. collide!) with you in your Mercedes! (For the public record, I drive an Audi.) Robert recently posted about geek disconnect, these guys are making the web consummable. - John W Lewis
So we've finally found the one person in the world who doesn't want to friend you on FB! - Rebecca Rachmany
Websites are so 1990s - Stephen Pickering
Makes me feel better for not updating my website anymore - I'm not behind, I'm ahead :D - Iphigenie
"I don't have a web site" indeed. My kids were not interested in learning how to create websites. "We have blogs on our cell phones." Well, then... - Rick Cogley
your son's approach doesn't sound as absurd as it might seem at first. look at skittles, who dropped their website and transfered everything to twitter! and i was just thinking the other day about an ngo-website i'm involved in and why not moving it completely over to a facebook page. - Johannan Edelman

Oh, what is Google going to do with my profile info? http://www.google.com/profile... Is Google working on a Facebook clone?
Not a clone, but they've been moving the chess pieces around for awhile now, adding bits to each service to tie it all together and grow it socially. The most popular search engine, and a free (email) account are the foundations. - Tinfoil 2.0
they need it imho to clearify their social graph informations they have due to the google accounts (and mail) - Andreas Klinger
and as the future social network is called internet they dont need to clone fb - just to have the correct socialgraph info (all imho) - Andreas Klinger
it's about time they get a decent, real, uberFriendFeed social, ... other than the old http://Orkut.com, popular namely in Brasil .. they have audience, visitors, and that is what really counts ... - pb:
My only concern is that my profile name would be the same as my email address. But I do agree, this could possibly make Google the 1 ton gorilla in the room, as if it wasn't content with being the 800lb gorilla in the room. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
yeo Facebook clone, it is what yahoo wanted to do in turning their email into a social network but never did, Google thing is gona be much more it is gona be location aware using google latitude, plus friend connect. - Ali
@derek they will, but proceeding in a very misterious way... i wrote about it yesterday, in last months seems like: 1) All Social Network have his final plan and a lot of pieces come together piece by piece OR 2) They run, copy and try to take best of competitor without a global vision of the future ..... - CantorJF
@Mike Yeah that bothered me too, having my Gmail address as the profile name. - Sally Church
Lol, i just tweeted you about a post i did about this. "Google are building a social network under our very noses. It could be bigger and better than Facebook." http://is.gd/syn9 - Zee.
It's opt-in, so nobody is forced to do anything, and GOOG won't do anything if you do not condone it. How many profiles does one need? - coldbrew
Google is an extremely cold blooded competitor. They would build the most powerful strategic nuclear weapon and you wouldn't even know till it hits you with one. - Arvind
C'mon Robert, I told you what we're working on - open standards for making the web social. These are the same profiles used in Friend Connect, they just now have nicer URLs than before. Read http://bit.ly/OSqa for an overview - Kevin Marks
Chris Messina had a great article up about it all, comparing the two. Check out http://factoryjoe.com for his comparison - Jesse Stay
Kevin: I know that. I just wanted to have a conversation about this. The fact that you added onto it is EXACTLY why I started it. So people could hear directly from Google about it and now your answer will always be in the search engine here too. :-) - Robert Scoble
"what is Google going to do with my profile info?" - They turned mine into a newt, but it got better. - John Craft
I guess its quite a move for their mission to organize the worlds information. Ie people search or recommending stuff based on your profile. They could do that without a google profile of course. - Michiel Sikkes
So, Scoble, you are orchestrating 'conversations'? Sounds kind of manipulative, but at least your upfront about it. [EDIT: Do you always have ulterior motives?] - coldbrew
havn't read the whole thread, but Google isn't after Facebook, Google will spend money to buy FF cause FF is more open, and more compliant with Greader and Gprofile (notice that Google profile gather service like FF), you can add your service in your google profile, the second step will be to agregate those service, in Greader sharing and comment on feed is there , so there is 80% that google will make a bid on FF before the end of the year. (but will FF sell to google?) I may say No. - abdellah
Conversation baiting lol :) I agree that's a pretty fine line to walk. I think abdellah's point is an interesting one. not sure if it makes sense in the timeline that you gave, but perhaps eventually. have the friendfeed founders ever addressed the potential for being acquired? - Frankie Warren
coldbrew: my goal for life is to have an interesting conversation every day. By doing it here it brings out all the data about a topic that one needs to search for it later on, too. I see my role as sort of a talk show host. abdellah: I believe friendfeed and facebook are on a collision course. Why? Because the money is in search. Friendfeed has a much better search engine, facebook has the users. Which service will have the users AND the search engine first? Facebook. But if Google bought friendfeed ... - Robert Scoble
THAT would be very interesting indeed! Because Google has the users, too. - Robert Scoble
I would prefer that google bought Friendfeed instead of Twitter. :) - Frode Stenstrøm
Robert: Right, but as a "talk show host" i don't think your goal should be to sensationalize to spark conversation... granted you wouldnt have had a response from someone within google setting the record straight, but i dont think you want to sacrifice credibility in the process, right? just my opinion. - Frankie Warren
Frankie: it's not sensational at all. It's a legitimate question which deserves conversation. How is Google going to get into Facebook/friendfeed is a REAL question for our industry. - Robert Scoble
Frode: me too. Plus Google would get four of its superstars back that way. Twitter's technology isn't good enough, either. It'd need to be rewritten from scratch for Google. Friendfeed's is a much better code base. Of course since it was written by ex-Google superstars it'll fit right into Google's infrastructure. - Robert Scoble
Of course. Since Yahoo already tried the same thing.... - Mike Shields
Robert: i agree, but i dont think you believed they were building "a facebok clone" as kevin marks previously told you what they were attempting to accomplish? maybe im overreacting or just don't know the way things work quite yet :) - Frankie Warren
imagine this: Google + Friendfeed vs Twitter + facebook + Microsoft :) that would be a battle. - Frankie Warren
major bummer for me is that i use a google domain. the public gmail account has the shorturl i want to use on my g-domain profile and i can't use it. essentially, the gmail account is "squatting" on my shorturl and there's no way to stop that. makes the google profile kinda worthless for me. - MikeAmundsen
Their email client is already LIKE a twitter anyway... - tojfs7931
I really like this idea: I already use GMail, GReader, Picasa, etc. so it makes sense to have all of those services baked into my online presence. Facebook still has the bells in whistles (gah! - I don't care which 5 items you wouldn't leave the house without) but so didn't MySpace back a few years ago -- remember myspace?? - Brian Graves
nicholas - what we need is something like FriendFeed + SocialThing +Ping.FM and you'd have your google reader for social networks. - Bill Rawlinson
Googles purchase of Friendfeed would save the service I think. Twitter is now beeing mentioned in newspapers and TV everyday here, and is getting the kind of publicity that facebook got at the beginning. No one I speak to have heard about Friendfeed, but everyone that I show it to loves it. I think Twitter can stand on its own, but Friendfeed needs a larger userbase. I fear what Facebook would do to Friendfeed if they got hold of the company,. - Frode Stenstrøm
Jeremiah Owyang
It's 2.5 hours from the Friendfeed redesign, what are you predictions? What will it look like?

Hopefully a little bit cleaner, easier to read and follow, more like Google Reader. I also hope it has feature to help me remember where I stopped reading/browsing. - Samuel Driessen
We should expect to see more of the 'real time' feed being in the normal experience, perhaps on side bar. - Jeremiah Owyang

I hope it's also easier to start using. I had a hard time moving over to FF. - Samuel Driessen
Agreed, FF has a harsh startup experience. Many barriers to entry. - Jeremiah Owyang
I hope it's pink and black and has glittertext. - Bec Rowe @d0tski
Two words: Animated GIFs. - Mike Nayyar
I'm betting they've made effective use of the <marquee> tag. - Joey Gibson
Here's a thought, maybe the redesign will look more like Google IG - Jeremiah Owyang
with all the hype so far, could it possibly live up to anyone's non-embargoed expectations? - Peter Kim
Peter: what hype? I've been watching every conversation coming through here and you haven't seen hype yet. Wait until we actually get to tell you what we think! It hasn't even been on Techmeme yet. And, we've been very careful to say that what's coming is compelling to consider, not that you'll like it. I don't like everything about it and am writing a long list of things I don't like about it. But it IS compelling and DOES change the world. It will live up to THAT hype. - Robert Scoble
A magical unicorn will arise from my computer and announce that Friendfeed has cured cancer and instilled world peace. - Steve Rubel
Steve: what version are you using? My version just brings me a donut and coffee in the morning. ;-) - Robert Scoble
Robert: The unicorn is in build 5143 - Ken Sheppardson
Ken: I think you have friendfeed confused with WIndows 7. :-) - Robert Scoble
Steve Gillmore has seen that unicorn, and I think Scoble is holding back - Richard Binhammer
"What does your FriendFeed say to you?!" no, it's not rice crispies. - MicahBear78

Really nice.. quick and clean - Louis-Philippe Gauthier
Oh man this is really addicting already. - Justin Yost
I like the look, and the way the new likes and comments just show up as part of the post instead of a whole new line. But the whole thing being real time, and updating while you are trying to write out a comment is a bit much. I imagine if you are following thousands of people this will become really hard to manage. - Simon Wicks
Makes for a fun Monday for sure. - Jeff Stannard
wow! this is really gonna hamper productivity. Plus, Information overload! Hope it doesn't get too distracting. - Tarun
Jason: on the iPhone there are still bugs. It's hard to click like in the real time feed. - Robert Scoble
Productivity is gone :-/ - Susan Beebe
I agree. - Teri Temme
Robert - you just have to be FAST! :) - Susan Beebe

Nice to see that this is all real-time now. - Geoffrey Wiseman
wow, you can see the comments appearing in real time... niice - Leandro Ardissone ⍨
So how are you supposed to read anything when it's always moving? - Todd Hoff
lies - Stuart Evans
This is actually really cool - Kurt Jarchow
Direct Messages are pretty cool. - Justin Yost
It is way too fast. Need a setting for refreshing on an interval, rather than real time. - Josue Fontanez
Oooo the page is moving. Color me impressed - Marcus Beagley
I am getting dizzy with so much speed. LOL - Carlos Lorenzo
Where's the re-share and link to this entry? Also, can't find preferences link. - Rui Pereira
Robert how many direct messages did you get? - İbrahim Uzun [ j ]
Firendfeed's problem isn't down to technology its down to name. Twitter has been behind FF for ages, but its name and the whole "Tweet" thing latches on with average people where as FF appeals to geeks like us that can appreaciate the differences and can remember more than one technology buzz work. - Mark Ritchie
Feed aggregation and sharing meets real-time messaging--this is a powerful unified communications platform--wait till they integrate real-time video! - Rory Conway
well it's a pretty radical change, at first glance I like but can see how this is going to be very difficult to keep up with - Dave Schwab
ok now it works hmm i think ive seen this beforeeeee ooo twitter maybe - Stuart Evans from twhirl
FF needs rating (like) of comments - how do they want to filter the good ones at live speed otherwise - Andreas Klinger
Looks kinda like Twitter, but that's not bad because I like Twitter! :) - Svartling
This seems more intuitive somehow. - craterdweller
I like how the content is moved to the left and and the operations are to the right. - Todd Hoff
Found the link to this entry: click on the time (how un-intuitive :) - Rui Pereira
Twitter crashed; wonder if this buzz helped - Kathryn Martyn
@mark ritchie - no, I don't think this is the problem. The mass market doesn't neccessarily want an overwhelmingly rich feature set. A simple proposition/UI often satisfies more people. Friendfeed, (and to an extent twitter tools such as tweetdeck) turns digital communication into a full-time occupation - as William Gibson said '‘They sat around accessing [social] media all day and talking about it, and nothing ever seemed to get done.’' - jeremy ettinghausen
Damian - thanks for noticing that - sounds cool huh?! - Susan Beebe
Not so sure all feeds should be equal. Knowing something from twitter for example is critical to the amount of attention I'll give it. - Todd Hoff
WHY DOES IT NEED HULK SMASH HANDS? - James
Seems much faster, love the real-tome comments. - Alex Scrivener
FF has been my best bud for close to a year. without a solid aggregator feature, i'm gonna hafta get a new best friend. - MikeAmundsen
not sure i like mixing users and groups into subscriptions, either. like the DM option (we'll see how that goes), like the "My Discussions" (do that lots now) - MikeAmundsen
Wow. This is a game changer. By commenting on an entry in the main feed you are basically initiating a direct message conversation with everyone who is tuned into that entry. - Barak B
easier to use, seems to be faster than the older and i like the new presentation :) ! - Alice Cordonnier
Like the UI - less wasted space & grouping of items more visual. I love innovation:) - Dave Blankenship
Still needs some work: Can't add new feeds, updates are too fast, no preferences ... Like it thou! - Rui Pereira
It's ok. I'm not overwhelmed with the changes. - Trevor Trumbo
dont like, but the concept is nice - Jordi Rivero
Generally like all the design changes. Looks nice. - Todd Hoff
When I'm reading comments and they start scrolling down, that is not good. I drink from a glass, not a firehose. - Todd Hoff
it shouldn't be like real time ... and the style is not good too ... - Viva Vida
what as the big fuss about? its good, but not "great"! and plenty of beta issues - like the offscreen updates shifting text you are reading "onscreen"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @scobelizer, is there an underhanded deal going on that we don't know about... you're note usually *this* pawny about the hype! - simran

Will Marketing become "Social Media", or will Social Media become just "Marketing"?
I'm seeing a lot of people saying things like "he/she does their social media", as though it's the new marketing department - Jesse Stay
@jesse imho sm is only one aspect of social web - its for content and multiplication - good marketing is content and its multiplication - Andreas Klinger
most likely Social Media will turn into Marketing in both the good and the bad way - Dobromir Hadzhiev
@jesse @andreasklinger check out what Naxos is doing with http://tr.im/nml30k Is that good marketing content for the social web? - Vinko
Vinko, I think it would be better if someone influential were handing out those free 1-month subscriptions instead of them trusting users will follow them and continue following them just for the subscriptions. - Jesse Stay
You may be correct about someone like you or Scoble giving out the 1-month subscriptions. Although I don't think Naxos is looking for a correlation between followers and subscribers to their service. Of course if the individual is one of the same that will be a bonus. - Vinko

Steve Rubel
Friendfeed is the Next Great Blogging Platform, Here's Why... - http://www.micropersuasion.com/2009...
steve, can i stop by with some meds today? :-P - Allen Stern
@Allen depends on the meds! - Steve Rubel
I go where the community is. So what's the best way to build a community here? - Tiffany Monhollon
dont worry steve they will be easy to take - Allen Stern
Allen, no injections! - Steve Rubel
That's why we dropped by the blog post, left a comment and then came back here. - Richard A.
Follow people, participate. - Richard A.
Great post, Steve. I agree. I much prefer FF. Another great feature of FF over Twitter is the customizable rooms. - Waynette Tubbs
can't say that i prefer FF over Twitter or vice-versa. i fear that twitter's simplicity is the key to its success, and adding any new features would turn me off. i was away from FF for a while, but back on again. my interest goes in waves. - Kevin Sablan
I also think your twitter experience varies depending on whether you're a big player or someone following the big players. Robert Scoble asks for something, he gets answers. John Smith might not get the same response. FF has a much better system to allow for others to get exposure. - Peter Spook
your post reminds me of a old presentation i did at a barcamp in austria - you should even add filtering via knowledge by social network graph to your idea - i've uploaded my presentation here: http://bit.ly/gosM - Andreas Klinger
custom domains would be awesome - Hans Kainz
FF is on fire and will have success, but I'm glad you're not the PM. Maybe I just have a problem with using the word 'blog' as part of the description, just like 'microblogging' poorly describes Twitter (and the clones). Twitter is elegant and simple, and also quite superficial which I think the mainstream audience will prefer. The engagement of the somewhat_early_adopter crew now on FF seems to have you drooling, but don't mistake that as the norm. - coldbrew
So you think it would be a good idea to have this like a big blogging platform??? i dont know... overboard a bit really I think... I would hate this place to turn into a bloody scoble blog - Rob Sellen :o)
I can it being a center for more in depth discussion and posting than twitter. I can also see it as an almost real time blog format, which Scoble is playingn with right now. Longer blogs? Not sure yet - Michael VanDervort
Friendfeed for me isn't a blog, it's "fflog" I COINED IT! - orionstarr
I agree about the participation side, but "Blogging Platform" it is not, unless the text posting adds more tools. - Jorge Escobar
If you add the things you suggest, you don't have a blogging platform, you have Tumblr. - Rex Hammock
Rex, except Tumblr does not have the community mojo that FF has. - Steve Rubel from IM
If the platform were to change as you suggest, Rubel, do you think the dynamics and "mojo" would remain the same? - coldbrew
It might become more complicated as more text finds its way into here. - Steve Rubel from IM
Once I thought of just directing my current blog URL to a Facebook page and be done with it. Luckily I didn't do that. But reading you now makes me think a time may come where I might considering moving my blog -or actually my blogging activity- entirely into Friendfeed. - Ignace Rodriguez de R,
great post Steve, i think folks are sometimes too critical of the design - where if Twitter is the only comparison, it's night and day. Just for purely tracking my diggs, reddits, etc. it's useful... but that's such a small piece. - Jason Hoch
I've been saying this since Scoble was accused of neglecting his blog for twitter & friendfeed - sofarsoShawn <Pop-Rocks>
noteworthy conveniences at Friendfeed: 1) one can subclass a specialized interest and publicly share in a separate "room"; 2) one can easily incorporate single items from others by "reshare"; 3) searching under Everyone can bring up obscure but astonishing stuff; 4) resharing can be generalized in the room by subscribing to several external blogs/services; 5) an embedded player plays... more... - Adriano
I think if you can manage your FF wisely you not need to check your mails anymore... - Syed Akram
Steve! sorry to be smart assed. But I have not seen one blog post here right? They just link back to your blog imo. You are fleeing to friendfeed because of the noise ratio. I hate FF :) 3 reasons and boy there are more. The only conversation goes on with the A-listers. No conversation comes my way on FF. It does though on Twitter. Twitter gives the smaller fish a place to converse. It does not work here on FF imo. Scoble has neglected his blog by hanging out here. All just my valid opinion :) - DC Crowley
... Mike Arrington brought this up first and he's right. FF and jsut video's for Fast company will not get Scoble the exposure he used to have. 3/. FF cost to much time to stay on top of stuff. I have a life and hallelujah a job that needs attending. The attention required is too much. - DC Crowley
DC: you are totally wrong. Most of the conversations here happen with non-A listers and I can prove it. My "best of" is very diverse. - Robert Scoble
Steve, I would *love* to see this "FriendFeed as blogging platform" happen. Ever since Facebook updated its platform, it's been hard to convince my "normal" friends to hang out @ Friendfeed because it's just too hard for them to grasp. Heck, Twitter is hard enough for many of them to understand. Here's to *selling* it as a blogging platform. Just might work! ;) - Barbara K. Baker
From Scoble's feed, also why: http://friendfeed.com/e... - sofarsoShawn <Pop-Rocks>
Robert Scoble

10. Be interesting. Craig Newmark got hundreds of follows in first evening (I was the first to follow him) after I tweeted about him. Why? Because he was interesting already. - Robert Scoble
Remember it's not about the followers - it's about the relationships. Your purpose of having many followers should be so you can build relationships with as many of them as possible. - Jesse Stay
11. Do something sensational like tatoo your twitter address onto your face. - Robert Scoble
BTW, (real-life) relationships then bring more followers - Jesse Stay

19. Be a member of congress, or better yet, Barack Obama. - Robert Scoble
This would loose me followers. Trust me on this. It would also get me a few lawsuits I think. :D - MarkCarras
this is going to go on for like...days...isn't it :P - Erin @queenofspain
