It looks like people are solving it, so hopefully I'm not spoiling it: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Tab, Return. It's a variation of the Konami code (which nets you 30 lives in Contra) adapted for the keyboard. Figured out the first part from Paul's clue, but it took going through the minified Javascript to figure out a) that they didn't use the original Konami code like Google does and b) what they used for keyboard equivalents for "select" and "start."

The suffering in Iran is not any less important. It's just that, for many in the US, it's become wearying. It's far away. We don't see what we can do about it. But Michael Jackson, well, we can find our old vinyls and play them once again. Maybe the media should help bring the struggling and suffering in Iran closer to us; maybe we need more people who can help us find something to do, so that we don't stare at the images and videos in utter helplessness. "The doomed Airbus A-330-200 was flying ever so close to its maximum altitude – in a zone pilots call the “Coffin Corner”. It refers to the edge of so-called “flight envelope” of an aircraft. At this altitude, the air is much thinner and that significantly narrows the swath of speed at which the airplane can safely operate. They will stop flying (stall) at a much higher speed (true airspeed) than they would on approach to an airport at sea level. At the other end of the safe speed spectrum is the sound barrier. The wings on an airliner like the A-330 are not designed to break the speed of sound. So you see the squeeze play as a plane flies toward the Coffin Corner: the margin between the between the high and low speed limits gets thinner and thinner (along with the air). Matter of fact, given its estimated weight, altitude and the outside air temperature (which also affects air density), AF 447 was flying through the eye of a speed needle only about 25 knots (28 mph) wide."

such a puzzle. the thing is, the A330 flight computer should "know" when the aircraft is approaching the "Coffin Corner." it is designed to keep the plane from getting into trouble. though it looks like the last ACARS messages from the plane are basically the flight computers saying they are confused, could a human please drive now (autopilot off, autothrottle off, switch to Alternate Law).

or rather the computer has to keep the airspeed between the two points. :-) if there's a small buffet margin of a few knots (difference between the Mach buffet speed and the stall buffet speed), the greater the chances that a manuever will get the plane into trouble. turning the plane can reduce the airspeed (thus causing it to stall), or pitching the nose down can increase the airspeed (thus causing a "Mach tuck" and pointing the nose down even more...)

Karim, are you sure that photo is from a 747? Mach .86 at that altitude is 500kts, not 275. That's 275m/s, not knots, which makes the "coffin corner" 60kts, not 30.

Gabe, i was assuming the speed was CAS. (does an EFIS display meters/sec.?) the calculator here http://www.newbyte.co.il/calc... shows that, for an altitude of 38,000 ft., temp. of -38 C, and speed of Mach .86, that results in a Calibrated Air Speed (CAS) of 275.

UAFlt 175 , an alleged 767, according to the video evidence, appeared to travel over 500 mph @ 700 ft., and was not dive-bombing. According to Boeing, that couldn't be. Marg, at 700ft the speed of sound is 764mph, so a plane going Mach .86 could be going 660mph. Of course few jets have the thrust to sustain flight at that height and speed for very long, but you could dive from altitude to build up a speed of over 660mph (your wings probably wouldn't fall off until over 700mph) and go for quite a ways at level flight before drag slowed you down to 500mph.

I was not aware that a 767 was able to break the sound barrier. Thank you for your answer that is very helpful. The "plane" in the vids appear to come in level, from at least a mile out. No, I never said a 767 could break the sound barrier. It can dive at 91% of the speed of sound, which near sea level is pretty fast. Once it comes out of that dive, it would cover a mile in maybe 10 seconds.

I drink tap water, but I freely admit that 'city water' is way less palatable than the water from our spring when I was growing up.

the water here in the UK is great. Tho, you do notice differences when you go to a different place - for example holidaying in Florida, the water has an extremely sulphury smell and taste. Markedly different to the water here in the UK.

We simply cannot drink the tap water in our house: there's something foul in the pipes. But, instead of bottled water, we pass our tap water through a Brita filter which makes it taste fantastic. Only time we drink bottled water is when we're on the road, camping, or whatever.

we keep a distiller going in the garage 24-7. what it pulls from the tap water represents the poor condition of the distribution system in our area. the water is fine, the pipes are full of crap. we all keep a "kleen kanteen" or other permanent bottle w/ us throughout the day.

Also - Facebook = "Real life Friends". If you only friend people you're actually friends with it's actually a terrific application for keeping in touch. If you try to treat it like a Friendfeed/Twitter/MySpace then you wind up with a load of crap and its utility takes a nose dive.

this is just one example of the silliness and boring nature of facebook. Frankly it's just not engaging. There's so much wrong with it and this is just the start. FriendFeed is a far superior platform for probably 100 different reasons.

I'm not a fan of the tons of virtual goods and apps either, but I've got tons of friends who would qualify as "normal people" and cannot imagine living without FB. It's a rich way for them to keep in touch with people. I like FF a bunch but I also recognize the bandwagon effect that exists with FB.

yep, I just IGNORE these types of apps/notifications- I have SO many sent to me and I would literally need to quite my job to attend to them full-time. It's insane. I think 95% of them are a waste of time imho... there are always going to be those people who love to do the spamming but it doesn't mean you need to pay attention to them :) One part of FB that I also do not love.

I don't get it. I have 600+ friends on FB (not crazy huge, but not an insubstantial number). About once a week, I do a combo of ignore-app's and ignore-all-apps from a few friends, and voila! In about 1-2 minutes, I'm all set. 1-2 minutes a week. How many friends do you have on FB, Thomas? And how many years has it been since you've cleared things out? While I think FB shares some of the blame, is this situation any different than not cleaning *anything else* out once in a while?
