Not only is the equal opportunity/ gender discrimination abhorrent, but also the "It would not be advisable..." don't-try-the-improbable part. Ironic. Walt Disney: "I could never convince the financiers that Disneyland was feasible, because dreams offer too little collateral." The difference between those earlier financiers and the 1930s Disney Productions is the later had almost nothing to lose, only something to gain by this woman coming to make a case for her talent.

We have come a long way since then, although I have in my lifetime still be told that "women dont" or "women cant" (usually linked to either leadership or technical ability) - as well as "sign papers promising not to have children" (i refused, even though i didnt even want children) - and I was born in the 70s

Although one thing that will be embarrassing to us in the future is that it is still ok to consider people "too young" or "too old" for certain jobs, wholesale. I find it absurd, and I can only imagine that some years from now people will gawk at current job ads and refusal letters in equally bemused manner.
