How the Economic Crisis Could Lead to Anarchy & Martial Law
October 8 at 8:31 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
Recently I was finally able to wrap my brain around the main causes of the market fallout, but I was having a hard time understanding how it would play out with the people who were not involved in creating the problems (hard working middle class Americans, for instance). After reading this article, it hit me really hard how Anarchy and Martial Law could come into play: In many cases, its not the home owners with morgages (often companies) but people who pay their rent on time who are being evicted. This is because the banks are foreclosing on the property that their landlord's own. Bigger landlord companies that may have many properties are not so sympathetic & just want their money. This article kinda represents where the rubber meets the road in terms of community and law enforcement. - Andrew Baron via Bookmarklet

Awesome! Can he stop enforcing that pesky "DUI" law too? Oooh! And that "public indecency" one too. I'm sick of having to wear pants. - Ben Jackson via twhirl
Ben, if your point is that the sheriff should be enforcing all laws, you're in for a surprise. In Illinois there is actually a law that the English language is not to be spoken. Should he be arresting anyone speaking English? Also, you can be arrested for vagrancy if you do not have at least $1 on your person. I carry plastic, does that mean I'm a vagrant? http://www.dumblaws.com/laws/u... - Aaron Krug
@Ben, do us all a favor and leave your pants on. ;) - Andrew Baron
@Andrew Awww Man! You're just repressing me, man! :) - Ben Jackson via twhirl
For those of you that carry just plastic, you should be arrested for lack of common sense. Also, the "no english" law is quoted a ton of places, but I don't see any references to what law it is. I would imagine it would be repealed when the made English the official language for IL. - Ben Jackson via twhirl
The last famous sheriff who did this was a guy named Jim Traficant in Youngstown, who took this and rode all the way up into the Congress where he served as sort of the resident whack-o for many years (he was a darling of the C-Span junkies because you never knew what would come next. He got nailed for not paying taxes on bribes he took though. He's doing 8 years in the federal pen now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J... - Andrew Leyden

I'm not patient enough to wait 30 minutes. Once we were driving to Vegas and stopped at the Denny's in Baker (a very small freeway town with very high traffic at its businesses). After a delay, we were seated. After waiting 10 minutes and not even receiving a hello, we left. (Leaving the ketchup intact.) My wife now refuses to stop in Baker. - Ontario Emperor

Why do some people blame this on the customers? It's a bit immature, but I'd be pissed too. - Tad - the Meme Maker
@Tad: 1) Customer is a dunce to wait 30 minutes for service. At 10 minutes they should have found a server and demanded service or gotten up and walked out. 2) Why take it out on a likely over-worked and under-paid server. Does that person deserve to clean up a juvenile mess? Find a manager and complain like an adult. 3) Get snarky with servers and you will not like what's in your food. Customer FAIL for weak-kneed, passive-aggressive immaturity. - AJ Kohn

Sorry, just hit me like a mack truck... Guess i'm in a depressed mood, and analytical of sorts. - Les Zaldor
Les - Yep. I came to the conclusion that my survival instinct has evolved to be too strong for me to just off myself. Since I'm going to be around for a while, I might as well do whatever I can to trigger the chemicals in my brain that make me think I'm happy. And society has worked itself out to this point that my best chances of being happy are by working together with everyone else. So I do what I do. - James Williams (willia4)
Two things: 1. As long as you are alive in this situation, its better to make it great. This must be done by making-up whats important to you personally. 2. Setting aside human reason which makes human do weird things, the one thing all life has in common is to reproduce and then protect the offspring so the offspring will reproduce. So it seems like making life good and trying to make it better for life, esp. human life, is the thing we were meant to do. - Andrew Baron
gotta keep that machine going. the man wants it that way - Cee Bee
I get those thoughts more often than I'd like, Les. Only thing I can figure is if everything is transient, including happiness and sadness, which would I rather experience while I'm salient? Which moment do I enjoy more in the moment? - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
The best answer comes from my favorite quote of all time: "Life. Life. To have erections." - Gustav Flaubert - Marko Bon
to experience things, because we have an overwhelming desire to connect to thoughts, people and places, and because we'd be really bloody bored sitting out our lives doing nothing. It grips onto us from when we are very young, and it's hard to shake off. - Vicky Pearce
@Marko - love the quote ;) - Les Zaldor
It's not all for nothing....Hallowed are the Ori. - Sean McGee
Yes, you're all right... I guess to experience the experiences, to find happiness, and to "leave your mark". I guess it's about finding those things that make you happy, and doing them - and those which are detrimental to happiness, find ways to suppress them? No worries, i'll never "off myself"! - Les Zaldor
Carpe Diem. That's all I have to say. Oh and always remember that I love you. :P - Elizabeth

But then came September—and everything changed. The selection of Palin. The lipstick-pig imbroglio. The ad accusing Obama of supporting the teaching of sex education to kindergartners, along with a slew of other spots rife with distortions and fabrications. Perhaps it was the sheer number of such incidents, perhaps the depth of their mendacity. But the meme began to take hold in the press that the “old McCain” was dead. Or perhaps that he had never existed in the first place. “There was a mismatch between the way he was behaving and the narrative the press had bought into,” observes Just. “It made reporters wonder, ‘Have we been had?’ And when that question starts being asked, it’s a very bad place for a candidate to be.” - Jeremy Toeman via Bookmarklet

@Alan People see what they want to see. You apparently want to see Martial Law and those evil NWO people taking over and therefore are posting links to support your statement. - Ben Jackson via twhirl
What would ever make you think that I want to see martial law? Perhaps you should turn the lens of "confirmation bias" back on yourself? On the contrary, and even to support "confirmation bias", I believe that most Americans do not believe that martial law could ever happen here and I am simply pointing out the laws and policies that are already in place, and that most people are unaware of, which could make it very possible for martial law to be declared in America, so that people can be more informed. - Alan Cheslow
Here's another one for you Alan, less law and more action. That should help to convince Ben of clear and present danger. http://tinyurl.com/4npsds - Aaron Krug
You don't want to see Martial Law. But you want to *see* it in the data available. - Ben Jackson
@Aaron Considering the subversive elements that exist in the US (KKK, Mountain Men, Terror Cells, Yankees Fans), I am kind of disappointed that the ability to do that was illegal in the first place. - Ben Jackson
If we let ourselves and the nation that represents us become a subversive element in order to root out the subversive elements you speak of, what good have we done? We have only watched ourselves become the villain and the victim at the same time. - Aaron Krug
@Ben, I suspect that you and I are just not going to agree on this, nor change one another's mind. You have yet to provide any reason why anyone should *not* be knowledgeable and concerned about the increasing amount of power that the government, and specifically the executive branch, has to declare martial law either outright or under a euphemism such as a "state of emergency" or "continuity of government plan" - Alan Cheslow
... and the very real danger that these powers can be abused to reduce or revoke our Constitutional and civil rights such as Habeas Corpus. So, can you explain why *you* choose to "see" that there is *no* threat of the government declaring martial law? - Alan Cheslow
Alan, you misunderstand, he sees it as well as anyone else, he just doesn't want to get tagged as a dissenter. - Aaron Krug
@Alan There's always a "threat." I deal in threats and risk. However, there's a lot more likely threats then the evil NWO declaring martial law. We have higher risks of a NBC attack, large-scale environmental disaster, or cyber-terrorism. I think the question is that if someone is going to declare martial law, why are they passing all these fun new ones and not using the existing ones that govern FEMA, etc. The Human mind always wants to see patterns and will often see it in white noise. - Ben Jackson

Earlier in the election cycle Chuck from Rocketboom and the Uptake, captured this incredible window into the daily lives of a small town, radically conservative and religious group of women revealing their thoughts on politics. While most Republican's are not extremists, it appears that Sarah Palin may be.
