it was sad good bye to firefox a while ago
- imran
I've tried to go back to Firefox so I can use userscripts but I just can't stay away from the speed and slimness of Chrome. Everything looks and feels kindof off when I try anything else.
- metalerik
I am currently running v4 dev channel and I can tell you it is even faster again than v3.0. Chrome absolutely rocks the speed!
- travispuk
looking forward to when they have it for the Mac.
- Thomas Hawk
Still says Chrome 3.0.x is up to date. Hmmmmmm
- Roberto Bonini
And they still have yet to integrate Google Bookmarks. Seriously, that's the only thing holding me back from using Chrome full-time, they have no good way for me to use my online-bookmarks-of-choice, even though it's their own bloody product. Oh, and lack of proper addons. No AdBlock = No Thanks.
- Otto
Otto, v4 gives you add ons and bookmark sync, unfortunately not using Google Bookmarks.
- travispuk
from iPhone
What is "bookmark sync"? If it's just copying my bookmarks between computers, then I have no use for it. I don't want local copies of bookmarks, I want my bookmarks live, synced from the internet, residing in memory until I close the browser. Hell, the Google Toolbar for Firefox has this. What's the holdup?
- Otto
Agreed with otto. Until there is plugins like Adblock it won't make me change full time.
- Wei-Yen Tan
from fftogo
Otto, your bookmarks will be stored in Google Docs if you are using version 4 sync. Google docs will become your bookmarks manager.
- Eugene Teng
Palm Pre is to Apple iPhone as Goole Chrome is to Mozilla Firefox. Its all about the add-ons/Apps
- Paul P Miller
Google Chrome is my favorite browser as well.
- Deb Sivard
My default browser just got better. Nice. Keep at it Google-Chrome-folks!
- Matt Penning
I switched to Chrome from Firefox full-time not long ago. I also had to switch from the dev channel to the beta one, but otherwise, I haven't looked back. I have to use Firefox for some specific things, like online banking, but Chrome's so much cleaner and faster than anything else.
- James Myatt
I keep getting sucked into safari by using me.com which is more characters than .mac ..syncing my info across the cloud to all devices on there for a while now. I'd like to see a few more features or even developers opening it up a bit more.
- Tyson
from BuddyFeed
Eugene: I don't use Google Docs much, and if I did, it seems like a poor place to put my bookmarks. I have a thousand or so bookmarks in Google Bookmarks already. It easily integrates with my Firefox installation. Why would I want to switch to a lesser, half-baked, solution? Again, this new Bookmarks Sync feature in Chrome is crap. It's a reason for me to NOT use it. They redeveloped the wheel, for no reason, and gave it corners in the process.
- Otto
Another "You Talk All Good And Junk": This is a scone... I believe you pronounce it 'skone' (rhythms with tone), Aussie's pronounce it 'Skon' (rhythms with on)
when i worked at the sheraton moana surfrider in hawaii, we served these with tea on the veranda. a co-worker told me they were pronounced skon and I didn't believe her. i loved the cream we served with these. please tell me other australians besides mo don't put vegemite on them!
- Trish Haley
Trish, I don't eat them with Vegemite and don't know anyone who does. But now I kinda want to try...
- Mellissa
It was always a scone (kone) to me but a skon to hubby, even though we're both Northern folk. We both say bath, grass and glass with a hard 'a', though, to that's ok...:)

so, what does it mean when someone says they're saving some leftover food "for 'ron"?

"Call it another case of being too fast on the Twitter. The perils of dashing off observations on the microblogging site were brought into sharp relief Monday when several overeager ABC News employees -- including “Nightline” anchor Terry Moran -- rushed to tweet that President Obama had called Kanye West a “jackass" for interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday. The problem: Obama made the comment during off-the-record chatter as he was being miked for an interview with CNBC anchor John Harwood. How exactly did ABC News get wind of it? The broadcast network’s Washington bureau shares a network fiber line with CNBC, and so ABC staffers in D.C. watching CNBC’s feed heard the exchange. What they didn’t hear, apparently, was the explicit agreement CNBC made with the White House that Obama’s chitchat was off the record. The president weighing in on the biggest pop culture story of the day was too delicious to ignore. Soon, e-mails about Obama’s...

Isn’t it odd that we’re willing to spend $300,000 to buy an accredited but ultimately useless academic line on our resume, but we hesitate to do a month of hard work to create a chunk of experience that’s priceless? - http://davemorin.tumblr.com/post...
Kashif: Boulder has a higher percentage of educated people than any other city in USA, from what I was told last night.
- Robert Scoble
Kashif: Boulder is also very beautiful and geeks who come here for College don't want to leave. I totally grok that after walking around last night. Finally, there's a good community here that supports startups.
- Robert Scoble
ReTel is interesting. Takes security video from retail stores, slices that up, sends it to workers around the world, who then analyze that video for him. Helps catch employees stealing from businesses, etc.
- Robert Scoble
aah thanks Robert, Ive heard about the natural beauty of Boulder, but now that it has geek points I need to visit that place
- Kashif Khan
Boulder's been a tech hotbed for a while - I had dealings with Republic Telecom (they made a Voice-over-Frame Relay system) there in the 1990s. Make sure to get to the Gold Hill Inn (up a dirt road into the Front Range) while you're there.
- John Craft
Everlater is a cool way to record your travels around the world. I'll have to try it out. http://www.everlater.com/ It builds a nice story site from all the things you've put into social networks and Flickr.
- Robert Scoble
Salt Lake City is just as beautiful and has just as many, if not more startups. Boulder just gets the cred because they have one central source for all those startups.
- Jesse Stay
Now TimZon is on stage. http://www.timzon.com/ this lets you share visual feedback. Combines audio, video, whiteboard, and screen capture.
- Robert Scoble
Robert - any more thoughts about timzon?
- Tobin Truog
Tobin, nah, I have to use it to see what I think of it.
- Robert Scoble
Now on stage is "Next Big Sound" http://thenextbigsound.com/ measures the growth and popularity for bands across major web properties and sells actionable insights around that data to band managers.
- Robert Scoble
Wow, Next Big Sound is example of a trend: getting data out of social networks and presenting this in new ways so that people can make better business decisions.
- Robert Scoble
Is there something specific about "Next Big Sound" to apply it just to bands? Can it also track brands?
- Kevin Krewell
Kevin: I'll ask. The whole shtick and UI, though, is really focused around music analysis.
- Robert Scoble
Zee I am so happy for you - I know how much you adore her. :) Congratulations again and may you have a fantabulous life together, filled with joy, love, and laughter! Best, Mona
- Mona Nomura
This has been coming up in my feed all day and I have not begun to tire of it at all. Lovely! Congratulations again!
- Jim the Blatant
Wow. Congrats Mucho! A long, healthy and happy life for the both of you! Remember how much you love each other right now, because down the road a few years, you might wonder where you are, how you got there, and who is sleeping next to you in bed. It's hard, hard work. But it's worth it!
- Morgan
Congratulations. And enjoy the rest of your vacation!
- Meryn Stol
Beautiful girl and beautiful ring.....congratulations!

I've been talking with Chris Pirillo, who runs the Gnomedex conference in Seattle in August (a few weeks away). He has a room that sits about 50 upstairs and asked me if I wanted to do something with it. The problem is it only seats about 50, so can't do anything fancy like have Mark Zuckerberg come and speak, so I thought of you here on FriendFeed and especially in building43. What should we do with the room? Let's discuss some ideas:
- Robert Scoble
Hey Robert, I'm down for checking out the building43 talks/panels at Gnomedex - albeit I don't have a startup, but still interested to hear what's going on.
- Kenneth
Yeah, sort of wishful thinking & knew that everything cool happens on the west coast.
- Jason Hansen
Andru: the problem is that we only have a fairly small room. If we make it too interesting it'll cause trouble. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
I'd love to do a series of interviews with local tech startups in Seattle. There's a ton of really great companies there.
- Robert Scoble
But mostly I'm looking for ideas and seeing if there's any interest in doing something at Gnomedex?
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, I just don't think it fits in to Gnomedex. That's a compliment BTW - it'll take attention away from it. What you SHOULD do, is a separate Building43 event ;)
- Andru Edwards
Andru: yeah, we're talking about a separate building43 event anyway. It's just that Chris offered us a room at Gnomedex to do something at. And there are no rules. So, we can do something that fits in there.
- Robert Scoble
Well you certainly COULD do something there - I just don't know if it totally fits. That's all I mean. If you do something, I will likely show up, but that means I have to choose, which has never been an issue at Gnomedex before ;)
- Andru Edwards
Yeah, that's a problem, isn't it? Personally I like just hanging out in the hallway cause Gnomedex attracts so many interesting people. Maybe we could do that: the unofficial Gnomedex hallway conversation?
- Robert Scoble
Yeah but then it becomes more of a gimmick and less of a...tangible thing? Because in the hallway people are going to be discussing all sorts of stuff, regardless of the "unofficial Gnomedex hallway conversation sponsored by Building43" or whatever, know what I mean? What if you did some stuff during breaks on stage?
- Andru Edwards
I think that unconferences were the answer to that - have a conference that is more like hanging out in the hallways. That is where the action is. Maybe Gnomedex could add an unconference portion to itself?
- MarkDilley
Mark: I like where this is going. Maybe we should get an unconference going about the 2010 Web.
- Robert Scoble
I think it is feasible to have an unconference that aligns with the official conference goal 'A single-track conference with quality content' - I have been involved with several unconferences that haven't worked, but I think that it is because they competed for attention. We could propose something like 2 unconference sessions in the morning followed by 2 or 3 scheduled conference sessions followed by 1 or 2 unconference sessions, so the participants are never asked to choose.
- MarkDilley
Mark: unfortunately Gnomedex is already planned, so anything we do will be competition. I am thinking of something like "for developers only, come build the 2010 web unconference style." Does that sound interesting? Gnomedex's schedule is here: http://www.gnomedex.com/events...
- Robert Scoble
Lindsay and I will be at Gnomedex. I'm not sure if we'll be ready to spill the beans on our sekkrit project though. Maybe to a select few. :D
- iTad
Tad: what, you having a baby? If you don't tell us we'll just make it up. :-)
- Robert Scoble
For Goddess' sake Robert, no! Only you're fool enough to have a baby (or two) after 40!
- iTad
Tad: it's a lot of fun. We're potty training and oh so much fun. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah - we went through that 10 years ago with Avynn. Most difficult thing I've ever done. Never again. (hopefully)
- iTad
Anyway, back to the topic, what, if anything, should we do at Gnomedex?
- Robert Scoble
Let's plan out what needs to be done to make Intelligent Agents a reality. I think we've got the technology right now - we just need to put it all together properly.
- iTad
Build out a virtual unconference. Complete with live video streaming and live FriendFeed chat. Incorporate real-time technologies to demonstrate how the "2010 web" will change the way we collaborate. Don't hold back. Use this as a blueprint to present to other companies.
- Bwana ☠
You got the title already Robert: the 2010 web unconference, and you moderate the conversations with anyone interested in presenting their visions
- Alberto Saavedra
from Nambu
That's too vague. Let's concentrate on something more concrete and interesting. The 2010 web will be what it will be. Let's create something that might not be if not for us.
- iTad
Tad: vague is good because it will be decided by the people who show up in true unconference style. Brad: not sure yet, probably on second day, but mostly we wanted to see if we could get enough interest first.
- Robert Scoble
I like Alberto's idea. What you could do is have a sign-up form and give people a spot on the form to express their interest in presenting a vision (or reality) to the rest of the group there. That way you could have a very clear idea of who is all interested, have an idea of how many people want to share (because it's no fun if everyone there just shows up to listen and not share), and...
- Brad Butner
Well, there are going to be a lot of people floating around in the hallway... do we just leave it open or what?
- Ⓒⓗⓡⓘⓢ Ⓟⓘⓡⓘⓛⓛⓞ
Robert - I was thinking for next year Gnomedex :-) a full unconference track. Maybe this year - a developers unconference with a session on thursday afternoon, friday night - or maybe just do a one day on sunday! any way to vibe off of the positiveness that is Gnomedex.
- MarkDilley
l0ckergn0me - I wonder if having a space for open space will work - you have an awesome event planned (and tradition) that work best when not trying to throw in open space - if you like the idea, planning for it next year would be the sweet spot, me thinks.
- MarkDilley
We have the entire top floor at Bell Harbor. We have hard costs per person, though...
- Ⓒⓗⓡⓘⓢ Ⓟⓘⓡⓘⓛⓛⓞ
Anyone considered renting a boat and doing an unconference cruise around the harbor? could leave right from the center. I'd be up for anything unconventional, Gnomedex is the bright spot on the calendar.
- Greg Birch
Would have been cool if this was planned a little earlier - you could have used the room like a wider hallway ;) and used a tweet hashtag to have gatherings there just for 10 mins at a time (4-5 times during the conf) over various topics. That should dilute the crowd . OR just use the room as a real time art/story building space - people can come and go and build a story around Gnomedex
- Maya
As you know, we've done an unconference day for http://www.northernvoice.ca on the Friday before the traditional Saturday conference. We've eventually distilled it down to a series of mini-camps--PhotoCamp, VideoCamp, uh, whatever else the attendees want. Not quite an unconference, but not a formal conference, either. It might work for the Gnomedex crowd.
- Darren Barefoot
This really angers me. I love Google Voice. I'm sure Apple will eventually break GV Mobile, which I purchased a few weeks ago. Then I'll be stuck with the not so good web interface. I'm really going to be watching upcoming Android phones carefully. I like my iPhone, but this is really pushing me to the breaking point.
- Ryan Whitwam
from iPhone
Yeah, this could seriously push me towards Android. That HTC Hero looks pretty sweet.
- Dennis Chiuten
Apple's behavior here is infuriating. Of course, they'll never comment publicly either. This is why you should jailbreak your phone.
- Brian Baggett
from iPhone
I guess it all boils down to the point that most initiatives are not willing to work on the plumbing of the web. Everyone wants to build the house and contain people within it. The irony of course is that if you build the plumbing smart you would be part of everything, instead of "owning" a small piece of the web trying to lock users in (And I thought my posts were long ;-) )
- Alexander van Elsas
"the price of freedom is eternal vigilance" very good and precise basic "Stein" for openness. Jefferson was a great Mensch!!
- Dan Romescu
Otherwise, I think that nowadays, the question of identity pales with the question of data portability, and especially the real-time exchange between networks. Singular identity is just a tiny, tiny bit of it all. And given Facebook's "legacy" with privacy settings (and privacy demands from users), I don't think they can truly open up any time. Twitter and FriendFeed, while neither one of them are accepting openid, can open up "all the way" in the future. They can go where Facebook can't.
- Meryn Stol
Marshall, Great article, and I like that you argued a point made on another tech blog. I can't remember the last time I saw that done (well).
- Brandon Mendelson
from FriendFeed MT Plugin
VEry very sweet.. Can't wait till I see it on my acct... well I can see it but it seems to be a bit buggy. If you go to "Settings -> Account Settings -> Linked Accounts" you can hook up your open id provider. So far I haven't gotten it to work with either my claimid one or my chi.mp one. I only tried the chi.mp one becuase my primary (claimid) wasn't being recognized by facebook. If someone gets this to work please let me know!
- Bill Rawlinson
I'll be more impressed when Facebook becomes an outy versus an inny. Good move though. I score it a "meh +"
- tomturnbull
from FriendFeed MT Plugin
has anyone actually logged in facebook using openid? there's no such form on the site :( you can only link your account, but not use it for login
- arty
Meryn and arty, I noticed the same thing. I was able to link my openid account, but what's the point if I can't login with it? nor is there the ability to register using openid. did they just make the announcement w/o rolling out functionality?
- chrisofspades
I had to install it for the Olympics. I haven't used it since. Use Flash and Firefox all the time though.
- Jennifer Dittrich
wasn't Silverlight in a update patch? maybe there just counting the machines they forced the install onto.
- Jason Remnant
@Jason - good call. I think it is also interesting that they're comparing Silverlight install numbers to web browsers, as opposed to other streaming media platforms. I'd like to see the "vs. Flash" count.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I've seen the warning telling me I need to install it more than I used it .. oh, wait...
- Wayne Smallman
I'm not a Microsoft fanboy (I only have one Windows install and it's in a virtual machine), but from a development perspective Silverlight is way more attractive than flash. Big reason: choice of programming languages. Action Script...shudder. If this had come from another company, I wonder if the reaction would be as negative.
- invariant
I think the main problem is that it was a blatant rip off of flash and they only came up with the idea after flash had gained such traction that it was never really going to be an alternative.
- Simon
from twhirl
Seems like an odd and pointless set of figures to compare.
- Chuck Baggett
I don't really see the point of comparing it to browsers. Doesn't it get installed with IE? I probably would have never used it if not for Netflix.
- dthree
I still think that if company Not Microsoft had come out with a plugin that let you do things that were similar to Flash, but allowed programmers to write apps for it in a general-purpose language they already knew, people would react a lot more positively. Don't get me wrong, the scorn and mistrust for MS is deserved, but I think that in this case it may be misplaced. Flash needs competition, don't you think?
- invariant
I stopped reading after "Dave Winer recently asked what FriendFeed would be if it didn’t pull in Twitter - the answer is simple: a service with very little activity." Wrong. I turned off Twitter in Friendfeed weeks ago and there's more than enough activity.
- Leo Laporte
Leo++. I guess it's the Twitterheads that think FF actually NEEDS Twitter to be useful when it's actually just another drop of water in the stream. Ok, I'll even upgrade it to tributary status, but it's one tributary among MANY
- Rahsheen the Dream
Leo, yeah i have a few nits to pick with this one too, but he's right about the comments from blogs stuff at the end of the post. Zee has a thread up on this as well with a bit of discussion. I commented a bit more there: http://friendfeed.com/the-nex...
- Chris Heath
Leo: Agreed, but it takes time for your twitter followers to find out about friendfeed and start to use that. I made the mistake of not putting all my twitter users into a group on FF, so now I get all the tweets in the mix of the FF content that i don't really want to see there.
- Jay McCormack
Hey at least I got Leo to read up to that - I don't think I've ever had Leo comment on one of my posts! I probably could have left out Dave's comment looking back at the post it could have been a different post.
- Allen Stern
Allen, one more thing... i'm checking the reply to twitter box and commenting here on ff - you do know about that capability right? because you made it seem like you didn't
- Chris Heath
Jay, you can fix that - http://friendfeed.com/friends go thru and spend the time to organize your friends, stay on top of the organization - it's the same as doing little chores around the house so you don't have to do one big cleaning every couple weeks (bad analogy, but you get the point) stay on top of things - it takes a little effort now and then, but you're better off for it in the long run
- Chris Heath
Chris: Have been doing that slowly. It's kinda hard now to know who came from twitter exclusively in that window. So every day I start by moving people who's tweets i'm only vaguely interested in into the 'twitter' group. I think by the end of the month I should be sorted. I'd love a way to reverse out all those people and then add them in again in the right group.
- Jay McCormack
Jay, yeah that's a good way to do it
- Chris Heath
i am not sure if the send the comment to twitter is a pro or a con - on the surface it looks like a pro but might be a con worse
- Allen Stern
I use the comment to twitter when I'm directing it at the author of the original tweet. Just to make sure I got their attention if I don't see them here very much.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
But the twitter discussion seems to miss a lot of the point of Allen's article. The point is the disconnect and disjointedness in all of the discussion that we all participate in. It's one thing for the power geeks to handle it, because a lot of us have learned how to deal with multiple in-flows and out-flows of data. But as Allen said, think of the poor masses who read some of this...
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I think the point of the article is valid. Duplicate posts and fragmented comment streams are a reality. I think there is probably a way to get some clarity with backtype or ubervu, but it's not a perfect solution.
- dthree
I'm intrigued with backtype, and going to look more into that - looked much more like what I'm looking for than Disqus. Disqus would be cool if it was able to track with the notification posts on FriendFeed, and make some way to track threads on Twitter (hashtags or thread serialnumbers)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
btw fred wilson replied and blames friendfeed for poor disqus implementation
- Allen Stern
My question to that, is: Is it up to friendfeed to implement inbound services, or up to disqus to provide the feed in the proper manner? I know that it's certainly up to me to setup the outbound feed on my blog correctly for it to import correctly into FriendFeed.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Finger pointing probably isn't constructive, since either side could probably push the changes necessary to get things working right but in the end they really have to work together to optimize it. On FriendFeed's side, they're providing the option for me to bring my comments in as entries. On Disqus' side, they could push blog comments over as comments on the corresponding entry already in FriendFeed...but what do you do if the commenter isn't a FriendFeed user?
- Ken Sheppardson
And given that any number of users can create as many entries as they'd like pointing at the same blog post, you really have to have some way to know which one is the "official", canonical entry ala http://friendfeed.com/friendf...
- Ken Sheppardson
Aggregation will always have this problem, and I doubt it can be solved easily. I beleive one of the underlying problems is that services like Friendfeed make it too easy to share things using RSS feeds. Aggregators would improve heavily in quality if the content that gets aggregated is hand picked and entered. Quality over quantity. But that defies all current web business models, so it isn't likely to happen
- Alexander van Elsas
Yeah, I think this distinction between articles in a "feed" and the stream of comments related to that feed causes fits when there's an impedance mismatch. In this case specifically the concept of a comment on Disqus doesn't match up exactly with what a comment is on Friendfeed. Maybe if we could move to a world where we just had "messages" that could be anything from a full blog post...
- Ken Sheppardson
My point wasn't finger pointing, but trying to discover the correct party to fix the situation. Obviously all the parties will really need to work together to solve the issues. And it's a very good question about what to do if the commenter isn't a FriendFeed user. I have thought about the issue of determining the canonical entry. That is problematic, especially considering re-shares...
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Ken that's a cool idea, a Like as a notice variant with an in_reply_to id
- Brian Hendrickson
Rob: I'll refrain from pointing fingers RE who I was talking about RE pointing fingers ;-) Let's see... what protocols might we already have sitting around that let us exchange messages containing text and media; distribute them to one or more users, groups or services; thread via in-reply-to pointers; support real time to the extent that the servers on each end of the connection can handle it... what we really need is some sort of, you know, simple message transport protocol.
- Ken Sheppardson
Interesting. I guess the real question is can we get the commenting systems to use it, and how would that or would that not open the whole field up to more spam?
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I love this article. It really hones in on the potential that Brightkite has and how a lot of it has been brought to the forefront with the release of their iPhone app.
- Corvida
If I owned BrightKite…/ Oh the things I would do, the wonderful funderful things I would do./ I would sync it through Wi Fi, through cell signal, through GPS,/ I would bring it out and parade it through Facebook apps best,/ I would take it on trips and put it on the road, I’d have it followed through public mode./ Promotions galore, they'd pour in and more,/ I'd have it stalk stars, I'd...

does BK 'know' your location via WiFi or do you have to update manually?
- Thomas Ho
Agreed with commenters on the post that a BlackBerry app is needed. I've been using BK on my Bold through e-mail and SMS; it's been good, but a well-executed BlackBerry app would knock it out of the park for me.
- Jared Smith
I thinks it's great that BK distinguishes between checking in, and doing things like leaving notes and photos. You checkin using whatever technology you can muster, and then you have equal access to all the other functionality. This is a boon to the folks who don't have iPhones

Actually McCain's right. And the difference is, McCain has been actively saying things that may cause himself to lose.
- Glenn Batuyong
while he may be "right," he's insincere and hypocritical. he's making this statement by leading people to believe that he hasn't resorted to the same thing and actually above this kind of BS.

Thanks Senator McCain, anyone with half a brain would say anything to win.
