Stephen, very happy to see new features like this, but I think the "death" part is the major users reducing their activity. Jesse, fair enough but major users always did come and go. Some of the departees who left said they were doing so because there was no new development. Clearly not all development is halted. Last week Paul hinted that FF may receive a major new feature, and characterized his participation as "20% time" -- I'll take that.

Jesse, I think you should focus where your users are focused. What do SocialToo users want? But if they want Facebook focus, you should still keep an eye on FriendFeed, since the future Facebook will look a lot more like FriendFeed.

saying good bye to a loved one, for example, needs some ceremony/ritual/time/actions - and typically now the only option is to submit all their friends and family to an hour's religious preaching -which, no matter what you pick, perhaps only 15% of the audience will care about - wrapped around 15 minutes of ritual about the deceased.

The French Revolution invented the concept of "civil baptism" - an entirely secular ceremony designed to mirror the Christian baptism and provide a social event where the newborn is welcomed into society. yes, in the UK as well the civil wedding halls are usually very pretty and the ceremony done by the civil servant has a lot of options I think? In Switzerland because the state requires the civil ceremony first (you celebrate the wedding in church after you get married) it is a quite normal option to chose to just do it there, and they too have nice options. I am doing an "aperitif in memory" for my dad tomorrow in Paris and trying to thing of gestures or moments that could be helfpul and beautiful. Making everyone light a candle could be dangerous, so i thought of message-in-a-bottle perhaps (people can leave an official message in a book, but these would be "nobody reads them" messages put in a bottle that we then toss to sea later? stupid or nice, i cant decide..

We had a secular wedding. No mentions of any religions or gods whatsoever. Not sure about any rituals for death or birth necessarily. For my own death, I'd want just enough stuff to comfort the people left behind, but no mention of religion directly in the memorial. (Not that I could control things much at that point. Not like a conference, more like a cocktail party where whoever wants can say a few words to the audience. Everyone shares good memories of the deceased and the whole family gets closer as the occasion puts back in touch people who may have not seen each other since a long time. In some African countries, it takes the form of a vigil that is considered a big social occasion with good food and people dressing up.

Naming Day's are a very popular alternative to baptism/christening here. Most funeral homes are non-denominational so it's possible to have a non-religious ceremony there. Lots of secular weddings officiated by marriage celebrants. If you come to my funeral, there will be much mention of God, but I doubt there will be a sermon.

MeLB it makes sense to have god mentioned or even a sermon if God mattered to you or matters to your family. And you are right that the halls are non dominational and available but most people don't have an idea what to do, how to go about it... There's much wisdom embodied in some of the religious rituals and having to come up with something from scratch at a stressful (good or bad)...

in the UK, the Humanist Association has created a set of ceremonies and there are trained officiants that can do non religious ceremonies. Never been to one, but the availability of them is a good thing. When I die, I want people to throw a party, wear bright colours, eat great food, support R if he's still around, reminisce my quirks and sillyness and be able to think "the world was a bit of a better place for her having been in it" << that last part I need to keep working on! :)

I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email.

Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier.

So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there).

If there’s something about friends and family not having their account set up properly, I’d prefer a way to recommend them the streams they forgot to add. For example, I could tell them “You forgot to add your Digg stream and your fourth and eight blog. Here’s the link.” Then he could just click the recommendation and had it set up easily.

After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages?

This is how green I am to Apple. I did not know there was 64bit Itunes. downloading it now. Also did not know you *have* to connect an iPad to a computer with Itunes to use it. 80 meg download. wow.

the MIFI is easy to setup. To change the default settings you need to go to 192.168.1.1 and log in with a default password of admin, however the directions make you go to a Novatel wireless page, and look for the PDF, scroll to page 26 to find this simple fact out.

Yeah, we're using a linux box as a print server. With airprint-generate.py it works well.

installed airprint on my windows 7 PC. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19... Took a while to find airprint.zip. links were not working.... I found it on 4shared. I had to manually add airprint.exe to the firewall, was not prompted. when I connected to each printer on the ipad, I had to sign in with my local userid and pw for the home computer. it works!

Printing to a laptop on a Domain, running Win 7 64. I was able to print, by authenticating to the laptops local admin account, with the laptop's wifi off of the corporate network. it was not letting me authenticate to my domain account. I prefer it connecting to the local account.

I don't get the archiving Gmail to the All Mail folder, instead of deleting. That threw me off. fortunately you can set it to delete. The default is archive.

Signed up for my first NetFlix account. I played a documentary about parking lots. the movie froze up 15 min in, then was grainy. I accidentally exited the app, apparently this ends the movie, and signs me out of Netflix. Netflix has no record of me watching the movie. I will experiment with this more, but it is not easy with very few good movies to watch.

We had a similar experience with our first attempt at Netflix streaming a couple months ago. It's been a lot better since then. Just bad luck I guess. We really like it now.

Purchased first iPad app WinAdmin, to use with VPN. This is a Windows remote desktop protocol (RDP) client. definitely worth 9$. (works fine over the MIFI) This is something that the Android platform cannot do. Cisco IPSEC Group Authentication. Maybe someday they will add it.... it's not on 2.2

Tested Print Bureau. This prints directly to my wifi HP Photosmart Plus 209b. There are more features like file sharing that I have not tested, as I use Dropbox. Recommend this for people with WIFI printers that are not Airprint compatible.

Testing Winadmin and VPN at home. Rotating the IPad 90 degrees disconnected me from my remote session, but not vpn. I just had to re log on to the remote computer. need to disable rotation or look into the Winadmin options.

Done most of my iPad testing. Weprint and the service airprint both seem to cause freezeups on the computers I loaded them on. Windows Defender thinks Weprint could be malware, most likely due to its file share feature. Another interesting point I need to document. I bought 2 apps using my cc, and the transactions have not shown up.....

Mike, try OurDoings on the iPad now. It's better on every platform (other than FF3 or IE7), but especially improved on the iPad. You can swipe to switch pictures. The photos fill the screen. Controls disappear after a few seconds, and reappear on a tap.

When I was young it was always Canada but in recent years I'm more keen on New Zealand, mainly because the climate there is similar to the UK and they have some wonderful scenery.

NZ seems incredibly beautiful and with milder weather than much of Canada. However, NZ is also miles from anyplace nearby. So if you like to travel but don't have a lot of $, you're kinda stuck. Whereas in Canada you can drive down into the US for travel and if you're on the Atlantic coast of Canada, flights to Europe probably aren't anywhere near as expensive as a flight from NZ to anywhere.

I almost thought it was broke, setting it up. you cannot tap the touchpad to select, by default. (i got a 10% discount on an opened box at BB). Fortunately I had my Mac expert on the phone telling me to press down.

First thing I did after it was setup, was to enable the tap to select. It's taking my eyes a bit to adjust to the small screen, I think the biggest issue for some is the 11" screen may be too small. I don't mind the small screen.

Apple mail configured my gmail, but did not import the contacts. I do not see where I would import them. I'll just use gmail on safari.

Facetime is Beta on the Mar Air, it was not included..... Installed ok. I'll test it tonight. Time for a Sunday walk with my wife.

I almost got the 13". I already have a 16" laptop, a Dell Latitude with 4gig, an I5 processor and Win7-64. at 6+ pounds, its a bit clunky. I like how light this laptop is.

Try cmd + space (spotlight search) to quickly run through your index for them. Did they not show up in the Applications folder?

iphoto does not show up with spotlight search. the Mac OS install USB has a separate install for iLife. loading all the apps now. Since this Macbook Air was a restock, it's possible when they reloaded the OS they forgot iLife. just guessing.

That was it. iLife 11 was not loaded. The OS must have been reloaded by the Geek Squad, when it was restocked.

Monday AM test. Connected to Cisco VPN. One issue - Apple Remote Desktop is $80. Tough to buy this if I am not sure it will work. Another test - a free app - IP scanner. nice utility. another test - Watched a movie (Outsourced) on Netflix last night. had to turn off HD, because video would occasionally freeze. that is most likely because our router is an old Wireless G.

Remote desktop over VPN was a success, but disconnecting froze the app. I may have been a bit impatient. Desktop was not affected.

I need to research the sleep mode. on a few occasions, if I let it sleep a few hours, it appears to have shut down, because waking up is rather slow, and I get the white screen. scanning the message boards on this one. (Edit: apparently the white screen on wake is from the "Deep Sleep")

Installed NTSF-3G. was able to connect to a network share via smb, but with the ip address not the netbios name. when i find time i will experiment with this. don't have much time during my day to test stuff....

I have an i-Mac which is the all In monitor desktop one. But when I purchased it I had all the apps installed so I wouldn't mess anything up. The windows to Mac transition is an awkward one that will take a little time.

3gp video from my Droid works with iMovie. No need to convert it. I use Dropbox to get the video from the Droid to the Mac. (I usually convert 3gp on the PC side before adding to movie maker)

ok, so you can annotate a picture in preview, launch the picture not in iPhoto, click preview from the toolbar, and then finally add text, lines, arrows. but in iphoto it appears that you need to upgrade, shell out $$$ to do these simple tasks.

re: smb shares only working via ip address and not the name --- i had this problem while using linux to connect to my windows pc share folders - i would assume that the mac uses basically the same samba package as linux -- the problem was in the 'name resolve order' line in smb.conf --- can't remember exactly what it was but something had to be re-ordered there and something else was added (i think) ... if you serach for smb and name resolve order i bet you can find the solution

The problem is that most governments seem to forget that the poor are the backbone of the country, they are all the cheap labour that run the industries, farms, small businesses, cleaning the streets etc. So without them, the country would be chaos, but yet they are still abused by the governments.
