If you use the FriendFeed Facebook application make sure you've configured it properly. We are switching to a new method of publishing in the not too distant future. If you see this message at http://apps.facebook.com/friendf... just click on the link to provide the proper permissions.

Orpheus' music was so powerful that no one could resist it—not even the fairest maiden. He chose the lovely Eurydice to be his wife. But their joy was brief. As Eurydice walked through a meadow shortly after their wedding, a poisonous snake bit her. She died, leaving Orpheus alone and deeply saddened. Overcome by grief, he decided to travel to the land of the dead to get her. - Azeem Baloch

Mmmhh, its 2012 now and Friendfeed cannot publish to my FB account since a couple of days. Any ideas how to fix that? - Michael Hohl

We added a few features you might have missed recently: support for imgur.com thumbnails (http://friendfeed.com/search...) and "Best of" for users/groups on the iPhone (http://friendfeed.com/iphone...)

Rumors of FriendFeed's death are greatly exaggerated. (Thank you, Ben!) - Stephen Mack
Thanks, guys :) - Ac0n (former Franc)
Stephen, very happy to see new features like this, but I think the "death" part is the major users reducing their activity. I'd love to see some support from Facebook in promoting FriendFeed more to encourage those users to go back. Or maybe they don't want to? Regardless, bonus for me! Thanks Benjamin - you're awesome! - Jesse Stay
Jesse, fair enough but major users always did come and go. Some of the departees who left said they were doing so because there was no new development. Clearly not all development is halted. Last week Paul hinted that FF may receive a major new feature, and characterized his participation as "20% time" -- I'll take that. - Stephen Mack
I backed down off the all caps. The group "best of" is really useful, love it. - Stephen Mack
Stephen, I agree - I'd just like some confirmation that Facebook cares about all this so I can know whether to focus my efforts on Facebook or FriendFeed or both. - Jesse Stay
I noticed the best of on the iPhone the other day, wrote it out on a cake and then ated it. - Josh Haley
Thanks for the update Ben - AJ Batac (/-_-)
Jesse, I think you should focus where your users are focused. What do SocialToo users want? But if they want Facebook focus, you should still keep an eye on FriendFeed, since the future Facebook will look a lot more like FriendFeed. - Bruce Lewis
Bruce, I'm not sure we know that. - Jesse Stay
Paul Buchheit said the FB acquisition was attractive because of shared vision/direction. I would be surprised if a lot of that vision wasn't already embodied in this product right here. - Bruce Lewis
not enough, best of day should be like a stream that can be traced back - ffcode
ffcode: you can do that. Here is the "Best of week" from one year ago: http://friendfeed.com/summary... - Benjamin Golub
thanks Benjamin - ffcode
ITS ALIVE!!!!!!! MUH HA HA - Roberto Bonini

we need to come up with secular/non religious ways to deal with big events, birth and death - so church is not the only option
saying good bye to a loved one, for example, needs some ceremony/ritual/time/actions - and typically now the only option is to submit all their friends and family to an hour's religious preaching -which, no matter what you pick, perhaps only 15% of the audience will care about - wrapped around 15 minutes of ritual about the deceased. - Iphigenie
For death, a low key party with a few speeches from close people followed by the burial/incineration protocol works pretty well. - Jean-Marc Liotier
The French Revolution invented the concept of "civil baptism" - an entirely secular ceremony designed to mirror the Christian baptism and provide a social event where the newborn is welcomed into society. Some people still do it, though it is rather rare. See http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki... and http://bapteme-civil.com/ - Jean-Marc Liotier
I have also seen secular weddings at the town hall made into full-fledged ceremonies with songs and speeches to make up for the lack of religious ceremony where this sort of thing takes place for religious people. - Jean-Marc Liotier
yes, in the UK as well the civil wedding halls are usually very pretty and the ceremony done by the civil servant has a lot of options I think? In Switzerland because the state requires the civil ceremony first (you celebrate the wedding in church after you get married) it is a quite normal option to chose to just do it there, and they too have nice options. But for death, just... more... - Iphigenie
I am doing an "aperitif in memory" for my dad tomorrow in Paris and trying to thing of gestures or moments that could be helfpul and beautiful. Making everyone light a candle could be dangerous, so i thought of message-in-a-bottle perhaps (people can leave an official message in a book, but these would be "nobody reads them" messages put in a bottle that we then toss to sea later? stupid or nice, i cant decide.. - Iphigenie
well, there had been culture for civil rituals in USSR but it disappears quite quickly as everyone and his dog jump onto religious bandwagon nowadays... - Отборнейший бред
We had a secular wedding. No mentions of any religions or gods whatsoever. Not sure about any rituals for death or birth necessarily. For my own death, I'd want just enough stuff to comfort the people left behind, but no mention of religion directly in the memorial. (Not that I could control things much at that point. But I'd do my best to make my wishes known in advance.) - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Not like a conference, more like a cocktail party where whoever wants can say a few words to the audience. Everyone shares good memories of the deceased and the whole family gets closer as the occasion puts back in touch people who may have not seen each other since a long time. In some African countries, it takes the form of a vigil that is considered a big social occasion with good food and people dressing up. - Jean-Marc Liotier
For death, our wills call for wakes--parties with no speeches, no sermons. Among relatives who are more religious, lately I'm mostly seeing celebrations of their life (in church)--no preaching but maybe 15-20 minutes of song & remembrance. - Walt Crawford
I haven't thought that far ahead, but I know if I could, I would like to leave this world in some kind of musical party. Kind of like those New Orleans funerals, only with a bunch of pleneros (and they can include a vejigante too) instead. Here, have a sample of what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Angel R. Rivera
^^^ when i die, i'll try this :) - 9000
Naming Day's are a very popular alternative to baptism/christening here. Most funeral homes are non-denominational so it's possible to have a non-religious ceremony there. Lots of secular weddings officiated by marriage celebrants. If you come to my funeral, there will be much mention of God, but I doubt there will be a sermon. - Mellissa
MeLB it makes sense to have god mentioned or even a sermon if God mattered to you or matters to your family. And you are right that the halls are non dominational and available but most people don't have an idea what to do, how to go about it... There's much wisdom embodied in some of the religious rituals and having to come up with something from scratch at a stressful (good or bad)... more... - Iphigenie
I think, if it has meaning to you and your lost loved one, that is meaning enough xxx - Mellissa
in the UK, the Humanist Association has created a set of ceremonies and there are trained officiants that can do non religious ceremonies. Never been to one, but the availability of them is a good thing. When I die, I want people to throw a party, wear bright colours, eat great food, support R if he's still around, reminisce my quirks and sillyness and be able to think "the world was a bit of a better place for her having been in it" << that last part I need to keep working on! :) - Iphigenie

You can now get a daily or weekly email digest for anybody's feed on FriendFeed. You'll get a daily or weekly email with the most popular posts from that person's feed. To get the email, click the "Email/IM" link at the top of anyone's feed, and select the "Best of day" or "Best of week" email option.

Thanks Bret! :) - Matt Ruiz
Thanks to Kevin for doing a great design for what turned out to be a more complex set of UI options than we had originally anticipated, and thanks to Tudor for implementing the email backend. - Bret Taylor
Great! Thanks! Love FF! - Scott Monaco
I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email. - Bret Taylor
This is a really cool idea Bret, I wish you can make that an RSS feed option as well. I'd be much more likely to read summaries in RSS than in email. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Lovely. Thanks guys. - Mitchell Tsai
Casey: Thanks for the tip. What's the 7 before the "?" mean in the URL? The number of likes or replies needed to be included? - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
this is killer, the random influx of email during the day was kinda getting fail-ish. I love the daily digest. - Drew Lucas
Very cool! Any way to get archives of previous months? (especially helpful for those of us who leave the internet for weeks at a time...) - Mitchell Tsai
WOW. that's really helpful! - K.D.
Looks like a great addition for those who are not embedded on the site. Nice intro. - Louis Gray
Cool! - Josh Haley
Just curious - at what time of the day will we get these emails ? Midnight US-Time, or will it respect our timezones ? - Ahsan Ali
Ahsan: it is somewhat random right now when the emails are sent, but we built in the backend capability to control what time they are sent, and we plan on exposing that control to users in the future. Right now, it is kind of random - sorry! - Bret Taylor
Thanks Bret - Ahsan Ali
Cool! can i get a daily or weekly email digest for the "Saved searches"? - 0M0M from email
Cool - Nimaa
This will be incredibly useful. Thanks to all involved in the design and execution. - Kathy Fitch
Nice addition! - Michael Fidler
But what exactly is "Best"? Is it anything that has a certain number of likes/comments? - Laura Norvig
@Bret LOL THAT WAS MY PROJECT! I will release it tomorrow. But you've also did it and killed my friendfeed application **sigh** But mine has multi-reporting weekly-daily-monthly at the same time and adjustable entry count! - Alp
@Bret please consolidate me or I won't code new apps with you api! :-) - Alp
Alp: we were not trying to withhold data. Later today the documentation will be updated to reflect the ability to obtain "Best of" for users. The feed id will be USERNAME/summary/N (similar to "Best of" for lists) - Benjamin Golub
Hi Ben, that is pretty funny, I tried that URL earlier today to see if it has been secretly released :) - Paul Kinlan
Bret: While Twitter struggle to keep their fail whale under control, you guys are developing stuff like this. Amazing - Thanks! - Jim Connolly
awesome feature, this will be highly useful for my corporate group ideas / content sharing; projects, etc.... THANK YOU :) - Susan Beebe
Great work. I especially like that it works on lists too. - Meryn Stol
my inbox might say different, but I like that :-) - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier. - Adam Lasnik
is there a love button cause I dont like this option I LOVE this option..great work guys - (jeff)isageek
Three options I would like (1) Can I select "top 100" instead of "top 30"? (2) Could I select both "best of day" and "best of week"? (3) How about older timeperiods? I'd love to get an e-mail with stuff from last week or Mar 2009? Start & end dates? Anything to help me read FriendFeed off-line would be great since I spend long periods off-line at festivals (especially during summer time) or overseas. - Awesome job guys! - Mitchell Tsai
So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there). - Kol Tregaskes
does anyone know of a web service that can do this? (I'm thinking weekly email updates of my favorite feeds/people) I don't think there's anything like friendfeed .. - Ac0n (former Franc)
That's a cool feature - Xitong Liu
Emails no longer get sent except for Subscriptions. The last non-sub email I recieved was July 15th, 2011. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
I still get them. - AJ Batac (/-_-)
I get these every day. - Me

Improve FriendFeed for your friends by recommending subscriptions - FriendFeed Blog
"As a devoted FriendFeed user, I have tried to convince all of my friends and family to join the site, but a handful of them never quite got their accounts set up properly. With our new Recommend friends feature, I can fix their FriendFeed experience by recommending subscriptions to them." Try it out at http://friendfeed.com/friends... - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
Nice! Friends, please send me recommendations :) - joey
Excellent feature, gooood idea! - Susan Beebe
Very cool =) - FFing Enigma
Cool stuff. - Mike Bracco
Uh, it tells me that Scoble, among others, could use the recommendations. WTF? Perhaps I have too few subscriptions for this to work. - Fred Yankowski
more good stuff - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Finally a better recommendation - directeur
I'd still love an "e-mail this item" feature, similar to Google Reader. - Jesse Stay
great idea! - Edwin Khodabakchian
Cool! Beats the heck out of #followfriday!! - Larry Hawes
What am I supposed to get when I click the 'recommend friends' link on someone's pop-up? Currently, the popup just goes away and I don't get directed anywhere else. - FFing Enigma
Fred: yah, unfortunately, you can only recommend people who you are subscribed you and who are also subscribed back to you. - Bret Taylor
Mark, I didn't submit a bug report since what is supposed to happen wasn't actually spelled out on the blog post or here; this might be the intended functionality... I hope not, but it's possible. - FFing Enigma
Tina: it is supposed to pop up a dialog. Sorry for the trouble - we will look into it. - Bret Taylor
At first I did not understand this, but now that I am checking it out, it is brilliant and addresses much of what we have complained about. NOW what will we complain about? - Liza + = ?
Just to confirm Bret, the first image in the blog post is what the pop up is supposed to look like, right? Because that's nothing like what the ff.com/recommend page looks like.... - FFing Enigma
I notice that new subscriptions are automatically added to one's home feed. I consider that kind of a bug. - Meryn Stol
Tina: yes, that is correct. The http://friendfeed.com/friends... page is just a list of people that we think could use some friend recommendations since they have few subscriptions. If you click on any of the "Recommend" links on that page, you will see the same, standard "Recommend friends" dialog. - Bret Taylor
User-driven...I like. - Josh Haley
Where would we find recommendations that others suggest to us? - Fred Yankowski
@Bret, who receive the recommandation see also who is the recommender? - Roberto
Fred: You will receive an email as well as a notification on the top of your feed. - Ross Miller
Roberto: yes, they see who recommended - Bret Taylor
Bret, if I recommend friends to people who haven't signed in for a long time, will they get email? A lot of my bored friends are not active FF users I think. (quite logical) - Meryn Stol
Not getting the pop-over when I click 'recommend' on the friendfeed.com/friends/recommend page either... FFox 3.0.12 if it's relevant. - FFing Enigma
and can I see who has accepted my recommendation? - Roberto
Roberto: You won't be notified if they accept/deny as the recommender. - Ross Miller
Ross: Ah, it just appeared on my feed. Cool. (And thanks Meryn) - Fred Yankowski
Meryn: yes, they will get an email with your recommendations - Bret Taylor from email
Bret, I accidently just received an email with previous recommendations. I had already viewed them through the web-interface. But indeed, it's there. Email looks good too, as I expected of course. :) - Meryn Stol
hey Robert Scoble....I have a trade proposal....you send my name to all your friends...i send your name to all of my friends for the rest of my life.... - Bob DeMarco
I would like that deal, too, Scoble. I like this a lot. - Ben Hanten
Bob: I charge $1 per friend. :-) just kidding, but the UI makes it so hard to send you to more than a few people. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Bret: You guys rock! This is so much better than FollowFriday, which I recommended just a while back. Now, I'm waiting for some recommendation emails! :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
If there’s something about friends and family not having their account set up properly, I’d prefer a way to recommend them the streams they forgot to add. For example, I could tell them “You forgot to add your Digg stream and your fourth and eight blog. Here’s the link.” Then he could just click the recommendation and had it set up easily. - Natsuki Seika
Definitely better than #followfriday. - Bernie Goldbach
As I have lots of subscriptions the pop-up window is *really* slow and always has been since the new UI (same thing for amending friends lists). :-( I like the feature though, so I could make a new friends list of my most recommended users and use that each time for each user? - Kol Tregaskes
fatma küfür istiyor - Joan Miro

FriendFeed API v2: Real-time, OAuth, file attachments, and more
"Today we are launching version 2 of the FriendFeed API for beta testing. We focused on making the API simpler to use, and we added number of compelling new features." Documentation: http://friendfeed.com/api... - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
OAuth? Sweet. Thanks a lot for all the new good stuff in the API: can't wait to use it. - Mark Trapp

good job guys, I bet devs are jumping high right now - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Sweet, congrats! - Ivan Zuzak
nice, good to see OAuth support, this will enable a larger 3rd party ecosphere around FriendFeed, I hope - Jeroen De Miranda
After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages? - Mark Trapp
Mark: direct messages are accessed using the feed ID "filter/direct". Read more about feed IDs at http://friendfeed.com/api.... Also direct messages appear in the "home" feed. - Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: ahhh, I see it now. I missed it when skimming that list over. Thanks! - Mark Trapp
Can you post the wget version of the command line? - Gabe
Gabe: wget --user=bgolub --password=passwd --post-file=MyPhoto.jpg http://friendfeed-api.com/v2... should work. In theory. Edit: nope. I'm not sure it's possible to do with wget. - Mark Trapp
Thanks God it is New API. - Alp B. from iPod
Nice progress here with this release! - Micah
I love it! - friday night
Why is wget questionable? - Gabe
Gabe: wget doesn't support multipart forms as a design decision. If you post a file, FriendFeed returns a 404, and if you post data, the query is too long for wget to handle. - Mark Trapp
cool : ) - Gurkan Oluc
Good work, look forward to seeing what developers can create - Joe Dawson

Amit: I wonder how many people tested that :) - Benjamin Golub
Thanks to bgolub posting his password, I now have all of FriendFeed's secret documents about notorious users, useless metrics, Justin Timberlake's promoting FF on Oprah's show, hiring Colbert as a spokesperson, Ev Williams being just a “distraction”. TechCrunch is going to love this! ;) - Amit Patel

This is how green I am to Apple. I did not know there was 64bit Itunes. downloading it now. Also did not know you *have* to connect an iPad to a computer with Itunes to use it. 80 meg download. wow. - Mike Nencetti
First connect to Itunes, and I am asked to upgrade the iPad from 3.2.2 to version 4.2. I say yes. The download appears to take 1 hour. another wow. - Mike Nencetti
success. now to activate the MIFI. (edit MIFI up and running, I like how they put the install in the device) ready to start testing. - Mike Nencetti
I don't think my wife has connected her iPad to her computer since she first set it up weeks ago. - Bruce Lewis
the MIFI is easy to setup. To change the default settings you need to go to 192.168.1.1 and log in with a default password of admin, however the directions make you go to a Novatel wireless page, and look for the PDF, scroll to page 26 to find this simple fact out. - Mike Nencetti
Testing on a bumpy commute home. Connects fast. Not sure where to put the mifi device...tonights testing will be printing to wifi and pc connected printers. - Mike Nencetti
Apparently my HP Photosmart Plus 209b is not compatible... 210b is. May buy a 4$ printing app, as the list of air printers is rather small. - Mike Nencetti
Yeah, we're using a linux box as a print server. With airprint-generate.py it works well. - Bruce Lewis
installed airprint on my windows 7 PC. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19... Took a while to find airprint.zip. links were not working.... I found it on 4shared. I had to manually add airprint.exe to the firewall, was not prompted. when I connected to each printer on the ipad, I had to sign in with my local userid and pw for the home computer. it works! - Mike Nencetti
As a test, I printed the instructions off of the web page. Then I realized it is 85 pages, 500 meg. the local computer can cancel the printout, fortunately. - Mike Nencetti
Thanks for that link mike. Will get AirPrint running ASAP. - Roberto Bonini
Printing to a laptop on a Domain, running Win 7 64. I was able to print, by authenticating to the laptops local admin account, with the laptop's wifi off of the corporate network. it was not letting me authenticate to my domain account. I prefer it connecting to the local account. - Mike Nencetti
I don't get the archiving Gmail to the All Mail folder, instead of deleting. That threw me off. fortunately you can set it to delete. The default is archive. - Mike Nencetti
Signed up for my first NetFlix account. I played a documentary about parking lots. the movie froze up 15 min in, then was grainy. I accidentally exited the app, apparently this ends the movie, and signs me out of Netflix. Netflix has no record of me watching the movie. I will experiment with this more, but it is not easy with very few good movies to watch. - Mike Nencetti
We had a similar experience with our first attempt at Netflix streaming a couple months ago. It's been a lot better since then. Just bad luck I guess. We really like it now. - DB - Just DB
Purchased first iPad app WinAdmin, to use with VPN. This is a Windows remote desktop protocol (RDP) client. definitely worth 9$. (works fine over the MIFI) This is something that the Android platform cannot do. Cisco IPSEC Group Authentication. Maybe someday they will add it.... it's not on 2.2 - Mike Nencetti
Tested Print Bureau. This prints directly to my wifi HP Photosmart Plus 209b. There are more features like file sharing that I have not tested, as I use Dropbox. Recommend this for people with WIFI printers that are not Airprint compatible. - Mike Nencetti
Watched Star Trek on Netflix. no pauses, no grainy video. Maybe Netflix isn't that bad. - Mike Nencetti
Testing Winadmin and VPN at home. Rotating the IPad 90 degrees disconnected me from my remote session, but not vpn. I just had to re log on to the remote computer. need to disable rotation or look into the Winadmin options. - Mike Nencetti from Android
Done most of my iPad testing. Weprint and the service airprint both seem to cause freezeups on the computers I loaded them on. Windows Defender thinks Weprint could be malware, most likely due to its file share feature. Another interesting point I need to document. I bought 2 apps using my cc, and the transactions have not shown up..... - Mike Nencetti from Android
Mike, try OurDoings on the iPad now. It's better on every platform (other than FF3 or IE7), but especially improved on the iPad. You can swipe to switch pictures. The photos fill the screen. Controls disappear after a few seconds, and reappear on a tap. - Bruce Lewis

I fear it will be VERY hard to get into either country but if I ever *move* and live in another country beside the UK (oh how I wish) should it be New Zealand or Canada?
istockphoto_6028708-canada-flag-map[1].jpg
Flag_Map_Of_New_Zealand[1].png
When I was young it was always Canada but in recent years I'm more keen on New Zealand, mainly because the climate there is similar to the UK and they have some wonderful scenery. - Kol Tregaskes
I keep hearing great things about New Zealand :-) - Rene, Pro Button Pusher
So do I Rene, though I hear you need to be very rich to get in. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
i lived in NZ during '97-'98. I LOVED IT THERE!! - Joe Silence
met my wife while living in NZ. we both realllly regret moving away. we had a house and car and everything. wtf were we thinking?? - Joe Silence
I guess you should list your priorities. Like, for me, I don't think "scenery" would make my top ten. - Andrew C (✓)
NZ has low crime (relative to the US and Canada and UK) and a high standard of living. if you have student loans there they will ruin you, tho. but that's a non-issue for you, i'm guessing. - Joe Silence
I have debts so unlike to ever be able to move to either but I live in hope.. one day maybe. :-) Crime in the UK is awful now. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
pretty bad in the US, as well, and likely to get worse before (if) it gets better. dunno how it compares to UK. - Joe Silence
Andrew, nice people, a good job, nice weather (similar to the UK, so not too hot, not too cold), good standard of living, places to visit. - Kol Tregaskes
Joe, I would think it's on par with the US now but that's just my gut feeling. - Kol Tregaskes
I'm staying out of this one. :) - Micah
Hear lots of great things about NZ. I know someone who lives there and his stories of what he does are pretty neat. Though, I do know someone in Canada too and I actually visited the place. Nice there too. - Arlan K.
I would pick New Zealand just because of the gorgeous scenery and nicer climate. - Lindsay
I read that NZ has annoying Internet filters though. - Kol Tregaskes
How much do you like sheep? - Alex Scrivener
@Kol I think it's probably easier for UKers to get in than anyone else - Shey
Hehe, Alex. Well I see sheep every day. Some across the road from me and I the office is on a farm and see them outside my desk window. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Shey, into Canada? I hope they don't test my French. ;-) I forgotten every single word of it since school. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
13.3% speak French only. So, you're good. - AJ Batac (/-_-)
Cool. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
if i could, i would move back to NZ without hesitation. 1/3 of our friends are still living there, so we are pretty up to date on what to expect. - Joe Silence
I would move to New Zealand in a heartbeat!!! Likely live in or near Christ Church. If I were to live in Canada it would be Vancouver. However neither is likely since Kevin and I each have large families all of whom are here in the US and seeing the ones on the East Coast is already hard enough. :( - Rachel Lea Fox
It would be Toronoto or Vancouver in Canada or the likes of Christ Church in NZ. - Kol Tregaskes
NZ seems incredibly beautiful and with milder weather than much of Canada. However, NZ is also miles from anyplace nearby. So if you like to travel but don't have a lot of $, you're kinda stuck. Whereas in Canada you can drive down into the US for travel and if you're on the Atlantic coast of Canada, flights to Europe probably aren't anywhere near as expensive as a flight from NZ to anywhere. - Spidra Webster
Hello from NZ, travel wise only 2.5 hrs to Aus so not that far away... - Tristan Hambling

Carrie getting some much deserved attention. "Ms. Grimes is an Internet-age statistician, one of many who are changing the image of the profession as a place for dronish number nerds. They are finding themselves increasingly in demand — and even cool. “I keep saying that the sexy job in the next 10 years will be statisticians,” said Hal Varian, chief economist at Google. “And I’m not kidding.”" - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
Great article, but it left out that statisticians need some CS muscle to effectively operate on large scale data. It's the combination that make Carrie -- and others like her -- 'Internet-age' statisticians. - Michael E. Driscoll

MacBook Air 11" - hard to believe this is my first Mac.
I will use FriendFeed to document what I think of it. I already have a laptop, so that's is why I did not get a MacBook. - Mike Nencetti
I almost thought it was broke, setting it up. you cannot tap the touchpad to select, by default. (i got a 10% discount on an opened box at BB). Fortunately I had my Mac expert on the phone telling me to press down. - Mike Nencetti
First thing I did after it was setup, was to enable the tap to select. It's taking my eyes a bit to adjust to the small screen, I think the biggest issue for some is the 11" screen may be too small. I don't mind the small screen. - Mike Nencetti
Apple mail configured my gmail, but did not import the contacts. I do not see where I would import them. I'll just use gmail on safari. - Mike Nencetti
Facetime is Beta on the Mar Air, it was not included..... Installed ok. I'll test it tonight. Time for a Sunday walk with my wife. - Mike Nencetti
I would have gotten the 13", but I forgive you. Buying a Mac is a good start. :) - Meryn Stol
I almost got the 13". I already have a 16" laptop, a Dell Latitude with 4gig, an I5 processor and Win7-64. at 6+ pounds, its a bit clunky. I like how light this laptop is. - Mike Nencetti
imovie and iphoto are not installed? can't find them. will try to add them in after dinner from the install usb drive. - Mike Nencetti
Try cmd + space (spotlight search) to quickly run through your index for them. Did they not show up in the Applications folder? - Mike Nayyar
iphoto does not show up with spotlight search. the Mac OS install USB has a separate install for iLife. loading all the apps now. Since this Macbook Air was a restock, it's possible when they reloaded the OS they forgot iLife. just guessing. - Mike Nencetti
Ooooh, I did not know this. Well well. This is quite interesting. - Mike Nayyar
That was it. iLife 11 was not loaded. The OS must have been reloaded by the Geek Squad, when it was restocked. - Mike Nencetti
Monday AM test. Connected to Cisco VPN. One issue - Apple Remote Desktop is $80. Tough to buy this if I am not sure it will work. Another test - a free app - IP scanner. nice utility. another test - Watched a movie (Outsourced) on Netflix last night. had to turn off HD, because video would occasionally freeze. that is most likely because our router is an old Wireless G. - Mike Nencetti
Microsoft has a free RDP client for Mac. http://www.macupdate.com/app... - testing now. (EDIT - success! need to remember to connect to the IP address, not the WINS name) - Mike Nencetti
Remote desktop over VPN was a success, but disconnecting froze the app. I may have been a bit impatient. Desktop was not affected. - Mike Nencetti
I need to research the sleep mode. on a few occasions, if I let it sleep a few hours, it appears to have shut down, because waking up is rather slow, and I get the white screen. scanning the message boards on this one. (Edit: apparently the white screen on wake is from the "Deep Sleep") - Mike Nencetti
Installed NTSF-3G. was able to connect to a network share via smb, but with the ip address not the netbios name. when i find time i will experiment with this. don't have much time during my day to test stuff.... - Mike Nencetti
I have an i-Mac which is the all In monitor desktop one. But when I purchased it I had all the apps installed so I wouldn't mess anything up. The windows to Mac transition is an awkward one that will take a little time. - Josh Aaron Willis from iPod
3gp video from my Droid works with iMovie. No need to convert it. I use Dropbox to get the video from the Droid to the Mac. (I usually convert 3gp on the PC side before adding to movie maker) - Mike Nencetti
My Kensington Pocket Mouse does not work properly on the Air, in either USB port. just general freeze-ups. a regular sized Dell USB mouse works. interesting.... - Mike Nencetti
iPhoto - oddly limited in that you cannot add text to photos. here is a thread. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthr... - Mike Nencetti
ok, so you can annotate a picture in preview, launch the picture not in iPhoto, click preview from the toolbar, and then finally add text, lines, arrows. but in iphoto it appears that you need to upgrade, shell out $$$ to do these simple tasks. - Mike Nencetti
to disable the (VERY LOUD) chime at startup, or wake from hibernate, use this utility http://www.macupdate.com/app... EDIT - this DID NOT WORK for Hibernate. now testing http://auto-mute.com/download/ Auto Mute - Mike Nencetti
re: smb shares only working via ip address and not the name --- i had this problem while using linux to connect to my windows pc share folders - i would assume that the mac uses basically the same samba package as linux -- the problem was in the 'name resolve order' line in smb.conf --- can't remember exactly what it was but something had to be re-ordered there and something else was added (i think) ... if you serach for smb and name resolve order i bet you can find the solution - Chris Heath
