Looking sharp! Good luck! So, you have a video phone?
- Nik
No, today's just a phone interview Nik, but I'm hoping to get called in for a face-to-face. I've had the thing since college, hence the question on whether it would fit or not. Probably needs to go to the cleaners if today goes well...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
just don't go "SNOK" while on the phone! :)
- Joe Silence
I'm going to pretty much apologize in advance if I sneeze, so hopefully she'll give me a pass on it.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I've realized a small problem: I don't think I own any run-free pantyhose. As we're also now out of orange juice, I guess I'll muster enough energy to go to the store for both a little later on.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
*tries to not stare or otherwise act creepy* *fails*
- Joe Silence
Tina! Pantyhose? Skirt? WTF??!! Thankfully those days are gone. I'm tellin' ya.
- anna sauce
Luckily I don't think it's a pantyhose job, more a 'business casual'. But, interview in clothes a notch above the company's daily norm is what I've always heard...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I stopped wearing my skirt suit because (as this thread shows) it just sends the girlie message a bit too hard. Now I do slacks, suit jacket, and nice top underneath. Glasses not contacts. If your'e curvy (like I am, and it looks like you are) you don't have to sex up the office clothes at all.
- anna sauce
It's a really nice suit and you look great- a women's tech group I am in talk about this *all the time* and in the early 90s there was a definite shift out of the skirt for reasons above. I mean, it's all in the impression. Since I'm going for tech roles, it's a tad different. If I was going for marketing, I'd vamp up a bit more. I'm more "trying to be taken seriously," though now that I'm older that's a little less of a worry than I was in my 20s trying to get a programming job!
- anna sauce
The best advice I got was- "dress for the pay you want". You may not want to out-dress your workplace, as that may send triggers of "she doesn't fit in." It's an interesting line. For corporate environments, definitely wear a suit (dress/skirt or slacks) for small companies, I'd go more for fitting in, but definitely show that you care and put effort into it (and dress for the pay you want).
- anna sauce
Well, it is a corporate job so a suit is appropriate if I get a face to face interview. An unfortunately, the skirt suit is the only one I have. Without my income and without even having my first unemployment check, I'm not in a position to buy a new one right now.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I sometimes do office visit interviews for my large IT company and I see skirts and pants. If it was my interview, I'd wear a knee length skirt.
- Sarah Miller
from iPhone
@anna "dress for the pay you want". I have to remember that.
- Nik
Wear your suit during the phone interview. You will magically come across as a true professional.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Coming late to the party - but it's gorgeous, and so are you. You'll knock 'em dead.
- MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
Very nice! Academia must be ultra-conservative this way b/c we are told to avoid showing our knees in our interview wear. Partly because of the pantyhose/shiny knee conundrum, but also because of how it might look when you sit down. Most initial interviews are done at our big conference, either at the conference job center or in hotel suites/rooms. You never know where you might be...

If the British government doesn't apologize for murdering Turing, they will be no better than the Nazi enemy that threw homosexuals into the gas chambers alongside the Jews and Gypsies. Wasn't he supposed to be on *our* side? The *Law* didn't think so...

We're still not very nice to gays. Apologizing for the past makes a statement. Correcting the present makes a difference in people's lives. I hope we do both.

The man was an absolute genius, its a pity he could not live further to expand our horizons of thinking. His abstract computing device called "Turing Machine" is for computer scientists what speed of light is for physicists, an ultimate limit of computation

Andrew agree. This is sad. I hope we can "correct the present."
- Rick Cogley
They should apologize for throwing Oscar Wilde in the clink as well.
- Joel Webber
If we follow the line of reasoning where the current government must apologize for all previous governments then it eventually reaches the point of absurdity. Besides how meaningful is an apology on behalf of someone else?
- Adewale Oshineye
Ok, I was being a bit silly about Wilde (there are plenty of things the Victorians could apologize for). But Turing was abused by what could be argued to be the "current" government (or at least political system), and that we still think of as the "good guys" (for wont of a better term) in WWII. And it was only ~50 years ago.

Hey folks - guess what? My neglected blog has won the "Best of Boston" award for "Management Services" - despite me being in Los Angeles and not offering - nor ever writing about - management services. With a web site full of content pilfered from the SBA, they send emails to business owners telling them they've won this award. They even show you a big, fancy press release. If you'll just "confirm your contact information" and send them $200+, you'll receive the framed award, to proudly hang in your home or office as a memento of your own personal stupidity.

BTW it's a little script. So you get this e-mail from "Ashley Carter" who is the “Selection Committee Chair” for the Association. The "draft press release" is "here" and you click a little coded link and it gens up the award and press release. Wonder how much they make off this.

FriendFeed has been almost completely blocked in Iran as far as we can tell. We have a large number of very active Iranian users, and we noticed a steep decline in activity yesterday. Graph below.
این نمودار نشاندهنده افت فرندفید به دلیل بسته شدن آن در ایران است
- Mycaptain
Bret: Is this based on IP numbers located in Iran, or actual activity from those users? If it's IP based, it'd be interesting to see the activity on a user basis and see if they've been able to route around the blocking.
- Ken Sheppardson
If Twitter were blocked and FriendFeed weren't, I'd expect an uptick in FriendFeed activity, not a 92% drop.
- Kevin Fox
I.e. given all the users who've previously accessed the site from an Iran IP number, how many have been active from different numbers in the past 2 days.
- Ken Sheppardson
Instead of "liking" this, shouldn't we have an "unlike" button?
- Steven Melfi
:( Bret: According to Stephen fry, these are the iran proxies: 218.128.112.18:8080 218.206.94.132:808 218.253.65.99:808 219.50.16.70:8080 . Can you track these IPs?
- Roberto Bonini
I knew this day was coming. Too bad.
- Robert Scoble
Steven - same feeling here. I always feel weird "liking" bad stories on FF
- Mike Bracco
How does traffic from China look? Or North Korea?
- τorƍue

- Imprenditore
I wonder what the international community can do about stuff like this. Eventually the "bad guys" will lose.
- Michiel Sikkes
Hopefully, we'll never see a graph like this for Turkey...
- Onur Şentüre
that's because the government has blocked access to friendfeed, twitter, facebook, youtube and ... after election and after protests in Iran cities !
- Farshad
Man... :( That's really a corrupt government. Hope it gets better soon.
- Peter
Kheyzaran mentioned over the weekend that both Twitter and FF were blocked for Iran starting I believe on Friday. He is using a proxy when possible to keep us updated
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Bret, any analysis about how many people unable to access FF directly are still able to access it via proxy?
- Daniel Dulitz
Daniel: Well, we are still getting a bunch of Farsi comments and posts. They may be Persians from outside Iran or from Iranians using proxies. We don't have a detailed analysis breaking those down at this point.
- Bret Taylor
Watching the "guerrilla cyberwarfare" aspect of the elections and reactions has been fascinating. Iran's universities are obviously full of resourceful, passionate geeks.
- John Craft
this is really bad. i hope there's some resolution to this. the people or iran have shown a lot of strength and courage to protest the illegitimacy of recent events. i don't think this will stop things
- Cee Bee
Is it possible that the same folks from Iran that are active on Friendfeed are the ones out protesting?
- MVB (Grinch of FF)

Frode: because the government is like China: they believe that by retarding the flow of information they will reduce the threat of protests and governmental overthrow.

I don't speak Persian, so I don't know all the searches, but there are still (luckily) a lot of Persian users posting: http://friendfeed.com/search.... If you are Persian and looking for updates, try our search engine to find the few users who still have access.
- Bret Taylor
Frode: and in Iran's case, they are run by conservative religious authorities and they don't like the fact that they are not in control of information flow like they used to be. They like to think they can still control information sources and, since they can't, they try to block places where their citizens can go to share information.
- Robert Scoble
is it a joke? iranian users seems the %90 of friend feed. it could not be real!
- Fırat DEMİREL
Firat: There are no units on the vertical axis of the chart.
- Ken Sheppardson
Firat: This is a chart of traffic from Iran, not of FF's total traffic.
- Kevin Fox
Firat, i doubt that this graph is a percentage graph... probably more likely that it's measuring hits, sessions, or total data transfered (mb, kb, etc)
- Chris Heath
Kevin: what impact did this have on FF's overall traffic?
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Iran is the #6 country for FriendFeed in terms of page views per day.
- Bret Taylor
Thanks all for answers. i told that it could not be real.. :) excuse me, i ve just read Bret's notice and looked at breaking point. i saw what i've missed before.. bad news for ff and iran.. :(

These statistics are incredible, especially the normally heavy useage of FF in Iran.

Iran restored cell phone service Sunday that had been down in the capital since Saturday. But Iranians still could not send text messages from their mobile phones, and the government increased its Internet filtering in an apparent attempt to undercut opposition voices. Social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter were also not working.

- Stanislas Jourdan
Stanislas: not to mention they encourage their smartest and richest people to leave (the ones who have technical skills). There's a reason why Silicon Valley has 10,000 or more Iranians living here. Their government sucks and the people are getting tired of it. Of course if their government was great I would never have met my wife (who grew up in Tehran). So, there is good to come out of a crappy government! :-)
- Robert Scoble
it has always seemed to me that the iranian user base is ENORMOUS here. wow. unbelievable.

It is interesting how much civil unrest that is brewing across the globe towards their governments. The knee jerk reactions in attempting to block certain websites shows how much they didn't expect the net to become such a widespread conduit for cutting through the bs and informing those that wish to know. I wish those who take a stand all the best.
- alphaxion
Another way for those that are in Iran is to access through Netvibes (but I don't know if it works or if it's blocked too), adding Friendfeed, Gmail and so on such as modules

The Iranian websites that people used to exchange information about the election protests in Iran are under cyber-attacks by the government forces and from anonymous sources. Many of them are down right now. These Iranian websites were our few last remaining channels to inform people. What can we do about that? Is there anyone out there who can help us with this?
- emin
i was 53rd active user in friendfeed until this filtering. now i can open FF with proxies and if i can fine. a Vpn but many Vpn here come from companies that have relations with security services, i thunk they allow us to bypass filternig and then, they will arrest who has wrote against their goals
- خیزران kheyzaran
Can't we transfer the data/databases of the sites you, iranian guys, use to any new domain we could buy? I want to help. Not by throwing rocks to "security service" forces, but, at least, by making possible for what YOU have to say to go public, worldwide.

3 miles is a long time to have to walk next to the person you're arguing with and not say anything for a pre-teen.
- rob friedman
My wife's recipe for situations like this is to pull over and refuse to drive until the kids calm down.
- Vlado Handziski
Absolutely not! Kudos to her for disciplining her kids. 3 miles may be a bit much, but really, 3 miles isn't that far if you live in suburbia - that could be the distance from the entrance of a subdivision to your front door! I don't think enough people discipline their kids these days, everyone ends up being a slave to their child - and afraid to tell them how it's gonna be. It's like everyone forgot what parenting is...
- Jim Rubenstein
Nope. Unless it was in the snow up hill both ways, I don't want to hear any complaining!

Nope, I know i'd rather walk 3 miles home and give a reasoned apology to my Mum than get hit for a punishment and have both of us end up feeling worse.
- Charlotte M
in my mind (and without reading the article) it really depends where she made them walk.
- Joe Silence
in general, this seems like a bad idea. leaving your kids alone on the street when you can no longer deal w/ them is a bad idea. the 'punishment' of walking in reaction to arguing is wide of the mark, too. from my POV, this is an example of bad parenting.
- MikeAmundsen
35 years ago many people would've thought nothing of it. this is not the mid-1970s, tho.
- Joe Silence
I think it depends on where they are. A suburban neighborhood would likely be safe but if this was in the middle-of-nowhere or in a really unsafe city/area, then it could be a bad idea.
- Rochelle
I think it is fine; once, during August camp two of the players on my football team got into a fight. Our coach made them spend the rest of the practice running laps on the track holding hands

What really happened is the 12-year-old caught up with the mom and got a ride home. Her sister found somebody to give her a ride home. Neither of the girls had to walk very far.
- Gabe
So, at 10 and 12 years old, the mom hasn't gotten to the point with her kids that they can't behave? Or at least that when she tells them something (like to stop and not touch each other), they listen? Taken in broader context ... I'm not impressed with this in the slightest. It's sort of like having someone ask you again and again and again and again for something and you simply ignore them, but then you finally blow up that last time and scream at them.
- AJ Kohn
I have a twin. Therefore it happened to me many times. And I'm fine :)

first comment on the reddit page definitely gets it right. We ARE a nation of pansies. The first time we allowed a lawsuit over hot coffee split because the woman held it between her legs, we became screwed.
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
Possibly some necessary context: White Plains is probably equivalent to most cities outside of New York. It's not like leaving them in Anytown, USA. It also appears that the kids split up, and one didn't know the way back.

It's a facts and circumstances inquiry. If the area was safe, it was a perfectly reasonable solution for a 10 and 12 year old. The mother who turned her in (for doing nothing wrong) is a harpie, and the judge who issued the protective order is an asshat.
- O.Shane
To Mike VanLare: in the McDonald's suit, the plaintiff actually only asked for approximately $2000 to settle her medical bills the first time around. McD's refused. And the coffee was far hotter than it should have been (even to McD's specifications). No one reasonably expects coffee to cause 3rd degree burns.

And similarly, http://www.typicallyspanish.com/news... :-( Showing his disagreement on this kind of cases, Emilio Calatayud, a judge working with youngsters, says that the Spanish law observes rights for minors, but they seem to forget that the same law also estipulates DUTIES (i.e. respect for parents) for the same minors. No adults, even judges, seem to remember this. :-(
- Maria Jose
3 miles does seem like a bit much to me, but then I guess the kids should have thought of that.
- Jim Addz No Value
If I were going to make the kids walk 3 miles home, They'd walk it, but I'd stay within sight, mostly to make sure they didn't pull any shenanigans like calling for a ride.Sure it'd be a pain in my butt, but it would prove the point.

It may be moving in that direction. I do really like what Steve is doing though, even if it seems a little messy. Posterous is looking better and better everyday.
- Shawn Hickman
TOOLs, Filters and Search capabilities become even more critical to sorting all this out
- Susan Beebe
Jesse, you can change all the 2s to "to" here on FriendFeed. Don't speak that Textlish here. :)
- Louis Gray
I actually had to read that a couple times because of the 2's lol... So is the personal part noise or is the work part noise ;)
- Frankie Warren
Louis that's FriendFeed's issue. When I post to Twitter they should do that conversion for me :)
- Jesse Stay
I maybe over blowing this I just thought Leo Laporte would have broken into his shows to report the news. The death of Jackson is a cultural event of epic proportions.
- Mark
I'll remember where I was at this moment.
- Dave Friedel
I will take a COMA any day over Death. Fuck yes there may be hope!!!!!!!!!
- Mark
I hope tmz was just jumping the gun
- Jason Tullos
I had a friend who had a cardiac arrest and was revived... but died a few days later. It's worse than a heart attack.
- Dave Friedel
Depending on how long he wasn't breathing, he may be technically alive, but...
- Thomas
We will worry about bringing him back later, if he is in a coma at least he is alive
- Mark
It's interesting that CNN isn't even mentioning the TMZ article. You'd think they'd at least reference it and say "let's wait for confirmation"...
- Thomas
Well, either they wait and get it right or call it early and possibly get it wrong. They're supposed to be reputable.
- aldenoneil
CNN just called based on CBS and the times
- Jason Tullos
Certainly for people around Veronica's age including me, this is probably the biggest cultural death in our lifetimes that we are old enough to understand
- Mark
BBC are saying its a shame cos people have tickets for his show and wont be able to go. Unbelievabe
- Mark
Last time I felt like this was 12 years ago, staying up all night when Diana passed away. The space-time continuum shifts and you always remember where you were at that moment.
- Dave Friedel
CNN is saying itll be devastating for the Jackson family. You don't say?
- Andrew Leahey
I remember Diana's death very well. I was up late watching SNL with a friend of mine during a sleepover party, and the news came on and interrupted it. We didn't know if it was part of the show or not.
- Veronica
Yeah, Twitter is not holding up well right now.
- Veronica
Yeah, I was moving at the time Diana died. The TV was the first thing I hooked up...
- Thomas
I was playing Donkey Kong Country on the Super Nintendo when I heard about Diana.
- Mark
This is going to be a major world-wide event, obviously.
- Veronica
Is it just me or is the internet in general feeling sluggish?
- Andrew Leahey
I am sure tens of millions of people are on the net than would normally be
- Mark
Yep, this feels just like Diana. That was worse because there was over 6 hours of waiting to find out. But it still is shuddering to see a milestone in life go by so fast.
- Dave Friedel
Micheal Jackson is/was a world wide music icon to all! Sad day in the music industry for such.
- Bryce Campbell
I remeber when the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, I was in 3 grade class and we was watching it live on TV, its was scary at the time
- Fee501st
Its not just a sad day for the music ind Bryce, believe me the world will mourn
- Mark
CNN anchor was talking about how everyone always expected him to return to the top some day. Totally did.
- Andrew Leahey
Millions will take to the streets in cities around the world
- Mark
I really hope this wasn't a pill overdose.
- Dave Friedel
I'm sad for his children. What a strange, sad life.
- Veronica
Mark, you're making me feel very old. :P
- Dave Friedel
I was an 80's baby, so I remember the talented time.
- Veronica
this is so sad. don't know what to say. I grew up with his songs, in the 80's.
- diego morelli
I'm 23, but totally remember him for his talent. He's still on my playlists.
- Andrew Leahey
The pop icons from the 60's-80's are slowly disappearing.
- imabonehead
He was like Reagan or video games. He was the 80's.
- Dave Friedel
For any of you too young to remember or experience it, Michael was the most amazing person to set foot on a stage. He completely changed the game. IMO the most amazing performer of all-time. This is truly devastating.
- Fleagle
adding his songs to my Napster Library as we speak
- Edgar Rodríguez
whats his best album im going to download it on Spotify
- Mark
I would have loved to see him perform. I remember waiting up all night to see the live premiere of the Scream video with Janet. Loved it.
- Veronica
I'm 19 but I think honestly that Michael Jackson is the most important star of the 20th century. Thriller was his best, in my opinion.
- Diego Espinoza V.
After they confirmed he was gone I turned off the news, I feel like them going on about his talent is rubbing our face in the fact that he's gone.
- Andrew Leahey
Some news channels are saying he was not upto 50 dates of his upcoming concert, but you can't predict a heart attack. A 40 year old man in perfect health can have a heart attack.
- Mark
Beat It was right before Thriller the video. The Thriller video was like a movie launch. Everyone sat around on the premiere night to see the longest video ever on MTV.
- Dave Friedel
Did anyone load that jeff golblum link on twitter? Wondering if it's a phishing site...
- Thomas
Showing confirmed both on MSNBC and Fox News.
- Kim Landwehr
Who is this CNN lady? First of all, she's putting words in that iReporter's (?!) mouth.
- Divya Mistry
I loaded, I'm not sure. Checking out mediafetcher.com
- Andrew Leahey
Kim - Fox news confirmed, and then immediately said that their reporters are waiting out side till UCLA Med Center confirms it
- Divya Mistry
His death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage. <------ I was just too young to experience that :(
- Mark
Dang, no kidding? So.....what else is going on?
- Tdubya
celebs dropping like flies, veronica you need to be careful for the rest of this week
- Anthony Kam
CNN had confirmation from the coroners office apparently
- Iain
Sad, sad day. :( I loved him when I was young and his music is still awesome. I always felt sorry for him too - he was clearly fucked up and it wasn't his fault.
- Amy
Man had issues, but holding the baby out the balcony... I can sleep soundly while chalking that fuck up to him.
- Anthony Kam
Like all artists, I judge him by his art, not his life
- anna sauce
A weird individual, but he encountered challenges totally unique to child stars
- anna sauce
I also think his popularity shouldn't be underestimated- friend went to a concert 6 years or so ago in Germany and was astounded by how many showed up- 10K? or something insane
- anna sauce
Macaulay Culkin's and Corey Feldman's phones are ringing off the hook.
- aldenoneil
leo which scientists decide how dangerous "gray goo" could be?
- Preternat (Ken Cadby)
I have a weak connection between my optic nerve and my brain. I wonder if something like that may one day help me see properly again ...
- Filippo Dinolfo
I'm wanting to ask a question about carbon nano tubes in space to collect space debris.
- tollie williams
I know this is something I'll be keeping an eye on. It's fascinating and hope inspiring for me.
- Filippo Dinolfo
leo *don't* give politicians credit for knowing this stuff better than we do. in fact it's up to smart voters to elect smart politicians.
- Preternat (Ken Cadby)
not a really hopping conversation here. so... please ask the guest if we can use nanotech to reduce spam someday
- Preternat (Ken Cadby)
I would rather used the tech to increase the strength of the key to open a can of spam.
- Philip Griego
The solar panel on the sun roof of the new Prius looks pretty see through.
- Philip Griego
I think the biggest fear about Nanotech is it being too transformative. Bioshock springs to mind. I know it's a game, but it pretty much encapsulated all the fear and paranoia around Nanotech.
- Filippo Dinolfo
I think advancements will happen faster and faster until the general population will be unable to make good decisions about it.
- Preternat (Ken Cadby)
Interesting. Not the first company you'd think would be making hardware criticisms, but when you consider how much of a risk downtime is to Google and Facebook, it's completely logical.
- Mike Nayyar
The only reason Google has done so well with power is because they are just using older (low power) systems, like the Pentium II and Celeron chips, because all that they need is IO bound not CPU bound.
