Android Market Flaws Causing Developer Exodus? | Android Phone Fans
"According to Reuters, Gameloft and other large companies developing games and apps for Android are pulling back support for the platform, noting a lack in ROI. They say that the iPhone distribution model provides MUCH better visibility, leading to sales, leading to revenue – something that has disappointed them with Android" - Rodfather from Bookmarklet
I didn't even know Gameloft had games in the Market - Rodfather
if their games didn't suck, maybe they wouldn't have a problem :P - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
They are exactly right. How hard is it to at the very least put 'best of day/week/month', that would tremendously help sales. I have seen the same 'Top' and 'Featured' apps for pretty much the entire time I have owned my G1. They need a new market and SOON. - Tim Hoeck
Dear Gameloft, Can Android market place can be improved, yes. But because of your dislike for how it is implemented you choose to limit your products availability to a new market. Then you whine about it and cry that you can't make money. Probably best you stay away if that is how your management handles difficulty. - CW™
Are there any prohibitions in place by the OHA or the carriers that would prevent gameloft or a consortium of game developers from creating their own marketplace? - scott anderson

Do Cyanogen upgrades (I'm currently running 4.0.4 on my Dream) require a full wipe and app/file/media reinstall?
Just wondering, I don't protest doing so, just wondering if I have to. - Matthew DeVries
I haven't wiped for an upgrade in a long time. - Tim Hoeck
You can run fix_permissions after installing, but you may need to wipe to go from the old CM builds to the new (post C&D) builds that don't include google apps. - DMKrow from Android

"This week we turned our attention to a rather timely battle being waged on the mobile front, between Apple’s still wildly-selling iPhone platform and Google’s (Google) slower to boil Android (Android) mobile operating system. Apparently the latter has been gaining some ground, resulting in our first unexpected upset victory in the Faceoff series. … Google Android is the winning platform by a more than 2:1 margin. Out of 5045 total votes, Android walked away with 3323 of them or 66%, while the iPhone platform only netted 1494 or 30%. The tie vote included 228 or 5% who just couldn’t choose between them. Many people cited the openness of the platform and third-party development process as well as Android’s versatility, being able to be put to use not just on phones but also netbooks, tablet devices, eReaders and more." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

The alternative would be support for Android plug-ins within Chrome ... the reincarnation of the Java applet. - scott anderson
Agreed. Well, sort of. I understand the Google philosophy that things shouldn't be complicated, but Android is mostly like Chrome OS, except Chrome OS is better suited for the desktop. Plus, if we load Android onto a desktop, apps won't display correctly with all of the pixel pushing. - Zachary TG

if HTC adds it to their developer release, then yes. It will most likely involve a wipe. Seeing as how no rooted roms can contain google parts due to licensing, I don't see any other way around it. We shall see. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ

Seesmic Ventures Into Mobile With Powerful New Apps For Android And BlackBerry
"Seesmic is having a huge week. The startup that develops Twitter and Facebook clients for the web and desktop just unveiled a native Windows client at Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference earlier this week. At the Real-Time CrunchUp today, Seesmic is launching its first venture into the mobile space with impressive apps for both the Android and BlackBerry, which are now available for download here. This is a pivotal moment for Seesmic because the startup is now conquering all the mediums—web, desktop and mobile. I sat down with Seesmic’s co-founder, Loic Le Meur, to test out the apps." - Joe Bonner from Bookmarklet
"The Android App also features a very sleek design and a user-friendly UI. The most noticeable advantage is how fast the app is. Le Meir says the app is native to the Android and claims its the “Tweetie for the Android.” Via a touch interface, you can easily navigate though threaded timelines, direct messages, different accounts, and @replies. And you can email Tweets as well as easily switch to landscape mode." - Joe Bonner

"Apple is widely regarded as the master of mobile software design, but is it about to copy a key feature of Android? The reason iPhone apps are so easy to use is that Apple enforces strict design rules on third party developers. Those rules could be about to change, we’ve heard." - Martin Bryant from Bookmarklet

Cristo - True, but Apple and Google come at things from such different directions that it's interesting when there's cross-over. - Martin Bryant
Many of Apple's ideas regarding iPhone came from General Magic and Danger. The press and public only seems interested in the surface stories though. - Cristo
"Apple likes to provide a unified approach to apps across the iPhone and iPod Touch platform. If third party developers are being told to take this approach, it points to the possibility that Apple may release something similar for the iPhone’s built in apps." -- How do you read stuff like that and not end up Godwinning every single Apple discussion? - Matthew DeVries

From the Android dev group today it appears the Android app market had a database problem today, and app download counts suddenly dropped from previous levels. Review counts also dropped. Many paniced developers.

I was at Best Buy this evening and played with the Motorola Droid. The screen feels really dim and the motion (in terms of interaction) feels slow compared to the iPhone / iPod Touch. Didn't get to play with it for a long time but it can use some improvements I think.

With the Motorola Droid launching with Android 2.0 in the U.S. to the tune of a healthy sales clip, it’s high time to do a new assessment of the state of affairs in the hottest mobile operating system match around. Be sure to cast your vote below for your choice between these mobile heavyweights. You have until noon EST on Friday November 20th, and be sure to let us know your reasoning in the comments. Not sure why the Sharp Zaurus and Nokia 770, N8x0, N900 had such small niche markets and yet people are so quick to jump on the Google bandwagon. I've owned every Linux PDA imaginable, but I'm not going to run out and buy an Android. I want a phone that doesn't crash, I want a vast selection of apps, and I want MP3s & videos that sync out-of-the-box... that's iPhone. As a Cocoa & python... more... - Ken & Kiyomi
"people are so quick to jump on the Google bandwagon." There's good reason for that: 1) FLOSS 2) Availability from multiple OEMs/carriers 3) Flexibility. Google's huge support for open, neutral networks has made them a huge positive influence in the traditionally closed mobile arena. Those are all things neither Apple nor any other competitor offer. The Easy Way Out is still the iPhone, but that's what Apple's always been about anyway. - LANjackal from IM
But Google isn't giving FLOSS for free. When I watch an Android phone hit my servers, I see "Googlebot" in my server logs. When I use Gmail, I see ads pertaining to my current mail keywords. I used Gmail to get IMAP fetches for my other accounts, I no longer do. I don't want Google indexing and storing my private emails. I'd rather pay for private storage or run my own dedicated... more... - Ken & Kiyomi
It's free to the developers and the bureaucratic requirements are a lot less onerous. That's undeniable. - LANjackal from IM

Nice writeup, Jason! - imabonehead
Thanks. :-) - Jason Huebel
Planning to write apps for it? - imabonehead
I've already downloaded the SDK. But there's a bit of a learning curve to overcome. If anyone has any suggestions on good Android programming resources (other than Google's site), please let me know. I wouldn't even mind killing a few trees for a book. - Jason Huebel
There's quite a few android books but i never read them myself - http://www.amazon.com/Android... - imabonehead
I find http://www.androidsnippets.org useful for learn-by-example stuff. Also, the API demos that come with the SDK. The Google docs have improved quite a bit over the course of this year. They are definately a good starting point for the high level fundemental stuff. - Andrew Perry from Android
Oh, BTW, great review Jason. Almost makes me want to trade up my ADP-1 for a Droid, since it sounds like an excellent device. Will be interested to know what the average battery life is, and if it has suffered by giving this phone a much larger screen & faster CPU. - Andrew Perry from Android
Well, I charged yesterday morning, used the phone all day and didn't charge over night. I'm at >50% battery power. I've done a little power management, so YMMV. So that's about 28 hours without charging. - Jason Huebel from IM
Good review! - Christoph Studer
More regarding battery life: the Droid recharges very slowly. Maybe that and the relatively long battery life indicates a larger battery? Anybody know? - Jason Huebel from IM
it might also explain the additional weight of the phone. - Jason Huebel from IM
BTW, I've been using the phone heavily this afternoon. Still at 20%. - Jason Huebel from Android
I have briefly plugged into my car charger while out running errands. But other than that, no long charging since yesterday morning. - Jason Huebel from Android
@Jason its a 1400 mAh battery. life of it seems to depend on what you are doing. - Matt Ellsworth
Yeah, I'm realistic about how long the battery will last. If I'm playing MP3's and talking on the phone, I expect decent battery life. But if I'm watching videos, I don't expect more than a few hours, max. - Jason Huebel
By these reports, it certainly doesn't sound any _worse_ the the HTC Dream / T-Mobile G1 battery life. Possibly a little better, which is quite impressive considering it's got more CPU grunt and a much bigger screen. - Andrew Perry
The Droid's capacity is certainly bigger. The stock G1 battery is 1150 mAh. How the Droid uses the battery is another factor, though. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)

Droid touchscreen jumpy when powered through USB - http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...

It seems others are having the same issue. http://www.droidforums.net/forum... - Rodfather
Ok this is strange. When I plug into any port of my netbook, it has the issue. When I unplug my netbook, it works fine. I'm using an aftermarket charger for my netbook. When I plug it into my work laptop, it works fine. - Rodfather
I guess it starts freaking out if there's not enough power running through the USB port. - Rodfather
