So I picked up a Galaxy Tab @ the local Best Buy surprisingly easily today. Um, now what? Being as this is my first Android device, any tips/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. =)
Nice. You can take a look at the apps I installed on it. I'd switch to another browser right away. The stock browser is slow for some reason. I'm using Dolphin HD. http://www.appbrain.com/user...
- Rodfather
Sweet, I'll have to go through your list, thanks! Still haven't had time to actually unbox & play with it yet.
- ronin
Uh, what is this "Roaming capability update" thing in the Wireless and network settings? Should I be activating it?
- ronin
Hm. I don't know. I don't have that on mine. I grabbed the AT&T version.
- Rodfather
ronin, how are you liking the Tab so far?
- imabonehead
@Rodfather Oh, ok. It actually made a phone call when I went into it and I listened to elevator music for awhile before canceling. =p I assume it called Verizon customer service for something.
- ronin
@imabonehead Eh, just turned it on like a half hour ago so haven't really done much with it. ;-p Plus now I gotta hit the sack so I'll play around w/it more tomorrow.
- ronin
Whoa that's weird. I assume it updates the preferred roaming list.
- Rodfather
Yeah I don't know what that was all about. I'll probably google up on it before I try it again.
- ronin
As a first impression though, the UI in the apps are definitely not as finely polished as on the iPad.
- ronin
Yeah, that's for sure. It'll take some time to get used to it and customize how you want it.
- Rodfather
You may be surprised along the way how flexible it is compared to the iPad. The iPad is still a whole lot easier to use.
- Rodfather
Hm, do you know if you can unlock yours to work on any GSM network? Since it's AT&T I assume they locked it by default.
- ronin
There were some thread talking about it in the xda forums. I'm not sure if it was pulled off yet. There is a hack to enable voice calling, but that involves flashing other ROMs.
- Rodfather
Hm, don't care so much about voice calling, just curious if you can take the AT&T one overseas.
- ronin
I assume 3rd party sites will offer the service like with phones. Not sure if AT&T or T-Mobile are ready or willing to give unlock codes away.
- Rodfather
Is there a quicker way to get back to the top of a webpage in Dolphin browser besides the gesture thing?
- ronin
from Android
No which sucks. I'd be nice if you could tap the top bar like in Safari and Tweetdeck.
- Rodfather
The gesture doesn't seem so bad using my thumbs in landscape. The button gets in the way sometimes.
- Rodfather
Still can't get over how bad the default browser is. Scrolling with it is downright horrid.
- ronin
And are there any app that makes use of the front cam besides I assume fring?
- ronin
I haven't tried fring yet. Tango works. The camera, by changing the shooting mode. I don't think Qik supports it. Maybe the the one made for the Evo will work.
- Rodfather
I've been really enjoying the process of watching TV shows on this. Using EZTVDroid (http://www.appbrain.com/app...) as a remote to download shows on the netbook. Then this method to install cifs modules so Rockplayer can view videos through ES Explorer (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpos...). I downloaded gScript lite and cifsmanager to get it going. So basically, whenever I'm on my local network, I can view videos directly from a Windows share.
- Rodfather
Does the Tab not fast charge when plugged in to a computer? When I have it plugged in to my USB hub or directly to a computer the battery icon has an "x" next to the lightning image. For awhile I thought that meant it wasn't charging at all but it is.
- ronin
It doesn't charge at all on my laptop. The iPad doesn't either. Probably need 1 amp. It works with the Tekkeon battery pack.
- Rodfather
I don't know. Maybe it was trickle charging on the laptop but I was using too much power. When plugged into the ac adapter, there's an animation on the battery icon though.
- Rodfather
Oh really? My iPad charges fine through my powered USB hub or MBP. Surprising that the Tab would need more juice than the iPad.
- ronin
The Samsung charger is 2A. It does charge relatively fast. It probably charges at 500mA for anything else.
- Rodfather
What do you think of the default launcher? I only wish widgets were resizable on it.
- ronin
from Android
Oh and does the AT&T version allow 3G Hotspot functionality?
- ronin
from Android
Officially from AT&T, no. There's no option for it. Technically yes. On my phones, I have this installed and it works great. http://code.google.com/p... I haven't attempted to get it working on the Galaxy Tab since I haven't hacked it to allow sideloading yet.
- Rodfather
Not surprising I guess since it's AT&T. With Verizon it's supported.
- ronin
from Android
Any reason I would want/need to root this thing?
- ronin
from Android
For screenshot apps, although you can take a screenshot by holding back and then the power button. For installing Titanium Backup to backup your apps with settings. To run Terminal/gScript to mount a Windows share on the sdcard, to get Rockplayer to play video files directly. Evenually, to run ROM Manager to backup the ROM. WiFi tethering.
- Rodfather
I guess there's no point in replacing my Verizon model w/an AT&T one?
- ronin
It depends. I grabbed the AT&T version since you don't need to sign a contract and I have the iPad 3G grandfathered unlimited $30/mo plan. I took out the SIM card included with the Galaxy Tab and replaced it with iPad SIM card. Works fine. The downside with the stock AT&T Galaxy Tab is it doesn't allow sideloading without a hack. Also, the AT&T version has 16GB internal storage + an external microSD slot for more. http://thenextweb.com/gadgets.... I may be wrong about storage part.
- Rodfather
Did yours come with 16GB internal storage? Or is that the included microSD card? Mine has 16GB internal storage, but with an empty external microSD slot to add up to 32GB more.
- Rodfather
The Verizon version doesn't have a camera flash?
- Rodfather
That article got the part about flash only being on the T-Mobile and AT&T model wrong. There's a flash on the Verizon one too. According to the Task Manager I have 1.23GB of internal space for Program, 81.26MB for Personal data, and then 14.73GB on external SD card.
- ronin
I guess there is a difference with storage. Mine is the same for app storage. There's 2GB for user apps. Then 16GB internal for storage (like for photos, etc), and then I put in another 32GB microSD in the external slot.
- Rodfather
So if I switched to the AT&T model I'd basically be paying $100 more for larger amount of maximum space. And I'd have to root it to be able to do 3G Hotspot and sideload (both which the Verizon already does out of the box I believe).
- ronin
I kinda like the 2GB/$25/month AT&T plan more than the 1GB/$20/month Verizon plan but Verizon signal is definitely better here.
- ronin
Yep. Well, $50 difference if it's unsubsidized. I don't think Verizon charges extra for tethering, but Sprint does.
- Rodfather
$100 diff. I got mine @ Best Buy w/their Black Friday deal where they had it for $50 off. And yeah, Verizon doesn't charge for tethering.
- ronin
Another thing to consider is AT&T is a bit more flexible. It's treated like a pre-paid plan. You can cancel and start a plan whenever you want, just like the iPad plans. With Verizon, I think you need to pay a $35 reconnect fee if you cancel and want to start a plan again. http://www.zdnet.com/blog...
- Rodfather
It seems Verizon is probably better suited for you. The main reason I went with AT&T is because I already had the iPad SIM card.
- Rodfather
Oh as for the launcher, I went with LauncherPro right away. I'm just used to it on my Evo. If you purchase it, you can have resizable widgets, but it doesn't make much difference unless it's like a Twitter feed or something. The widgets you get from the paid version isn't all that bad.
- Rodfather
Hmm... how do I copy files from internal to SD card?
- ronin
from Android
I think for you the internal storage is the microSD card. On mine the internal storage is /sdcard and the external slot is /sdcard/external_sd. I'm using ES Explorer for a file manager.
- Rodfather
If you mean moving apps to the microSD, go to settings->applications->manage applications and click move to sd on the app. Or download MoveToSD. You shouldnt need to though.
- Rodfather
Mm, no according to Settings->SD card and device storage, I have 14.64GB of available space on the external SD card and 1.03GB available space on internal device storage. I just created two video clips that I want to make sure is saved on SD but when I launch the My files app I think it only shows me the internal space. I guess I should download ES Explorer or MoveToSD or both?
- ronin
The 1.03GB is for apps. You can't even view that. It's somewhere in the microSD. Just get ES Explorer.
- Rodfather
If you used the camera, it's probably in the DCIM folder.
- Rodfather
Yeah I found the vid files already, just wasn't sure if they were saved on the SD already.
- ronin
'k, looks like My files was showing me the SD content already. So I don't need to move the vids anywhere. Cool.
- ronin
Is it currently possible to root the Tab so that all carrier-provided restrictions are removed?
- ronin
Well, it seems these days people are flashing the European ROMs. I'm staying away from that until there's an easy way to backup and restore the ROM (preferably through ClockWork Mod). It's easy enough just to root it though. Download z4root from the Market and press the button. You can unroot just as easily. From there, it depends what you want to do.
- Rodfather
Hm... I guess in order for the European ROMs to work I'd have to first start off w/a GSM-based model (AT&T or T-Mobile)?
- ronin
Sorta. I think people have been extracting the modem bits from CDMA versions and the rest from the European ROM. It all seems too sketchy to me. I don't want to end up with the bricked tablet.
- Rodfather
Yeah that's sounding much too advanced for me at this point. I want everything all neatly packaged up for me. =)
- ronin
Yeah, I don't think Verizon released a factory stock firmware yet. There's one for T-Mobile and AT&T floating around. Still, using a custom flashing tool on the PC (Odin) is too sketchy. I'd rather be able to do it all from the phone/tablet and have a reliable way of restoring to another ROM just in case.
- Rodfather
One thing I still find puzzling is why the CDMA models don't come with the 16GB internal memory that the GSM models have. Bah.
- ronin
Yeah, that's weird. Maybe the radio takes more space?
- Rodfather
