Still one of my favorite movies. Such a fun movie when you're approximately the same age as the actors. And...Jerry O'Connell, fraking transformed. I watched several seasons of "Crossing Jordan" before realizing he was the kid who played Vern. Still blows my mind. And now he's happily married to Rebecca Romijn. You won, sir! - Andrew Skretvedt

NBC Cancels 'Law & Order' - http://digg.com/televis...
"Not surprising. Ever watch L&O or one of the spinoffs lately? It used to be fantastic, boundary-pushing, and among the most intelligent and suspenseful dramas on TV. But, within this current season especially, the writing quality has backed way way off. Some of the shows have also been suffused with ill-conceived political propaganda, rather than simply being, "ripped from the headlines." It's a blatant slap at the audience and jarring (promote your public policy agenda, GE). <<in the morning What makes me most depressed: NBC's brought out top-talent A-list guest actors for this current season (at least on the spinoffs), but has done both they and we viewers a horrible disservice by giving them the most dopey things to say. The actors do what they can, but I'm left feeling that perhaps our economy is all that keeps them from saying: "thanks, but no thanks, this script is garbage, and I don't want to tarnish my acting reputation on it." Stiff, drole, uninspiring. You know the best when..." - Andrew Skretvedt

Fox News Calls Mr. Rogers "An Evil, Evil Man" - http://www.prosebeforehos.com/governm...
Yeah yeah. I watched the heck outta Mr. Rogers as a wee lad. I thought the show was fun enough, but there was also something a little strange about it. I seemed fine. But I gotta tell you, you can understand what they were on about at Fox News, right? I wouldn't be too quick to cast Fox scorn. Self-esteem is important, and so was Mr. Rogers. Complete Visual Guide To Curling :) http://mona.posterous.com/curling... - Johnny
Curling not big in USA, and I forget that I live in one of the centers of USA curling. Grand Forks, ND, is only just over a hour away from Bemidji, MN, where many of the US Olympic curlers of the last couple of games hailed from. - Andrew Skretvedt
I get watching curling during the Winter Games, and it makes me want to head to the rink for a bonspiel, shoot some rocks toward the button, hoping not to hog-it if I slip out of the hack, and draw around the guards with the hammer, vice-skip helping the brushing, for the freeze and the win! Thanks Leo and Ray, love the deep technical discussions. - Andrew Smith
I think Leo showed Chrome and Safari passing the v4 test on Mac, while Firefox passed only v2. Apparently for Firefox, v4 support was temporarily dropped beyond 3.0.x for a technical reason. Here on Vista, FF 3.6 passed v2 by default, but Chrome 4.1.249.1036 (41514) was totally UNMANAGED. Other Chrome on Win users, confirm? Chrome has apparently no preference or config control for this, right? - Andrew Skretvedt

78 Retailers Caught Selling Rayon as Eco-Friendly Bamboo - http://digg.com/environ...
"XBunnyRacer, I don't know about that. From what I've read in the article, bamboo is bamboo and bamboo fiber for textiles is not soft, but can be processed into rayon, and if so from then on it's rayon, just like any other rayon. It's not "special" rayon. There'd be nothing bamboo left about it. It seems marketers are simply trying to cash-in on the fact that bamboo has become top-of-mind." - Andrew Skretvedt
Andrew Skretvedt
78 Retailers Caught Selling Rayon as Eco-Friendly Bamboo - http://digg.com/environ...
"I have some very stylish and comfortable short-sleeve shirts under the label "Solitude" which have a palm-tree embroidered over the breast pocket. The brand's selling tag claimed they were made from bamboo fiber (which didn't matter to me), but I knew that was crap when I looked at the care-tag and noted it explicitly stated "82% modal-rayon; 18% polyester". Rayon sure can't be bamboo. I wasn't taken in by that claim, I bought them anyway because they felt great, fit well, and had a smart look. Too bad they held-up like tissue paper. The mis-marketing probably caused them to be priced higher than they otherwise would have, however. But I bought them anyway, so I've no one to blame but me. But, I can certainly tell you I'm put off by that brand now." - Andrew Skretvedt

I thought of killing myself, says climate scandal professor - http://digg.com/environ...
"The article reports Prof. Jones as admitting he didn't take FoI requests seriously, and that he wasn't trained for PR or crisis management. What?! What crisis? Science stands on its own. Data and research collected at (UK) taxpayer expense ought to be always fully open for dissemination as far as practicable, regardless of research state. Proper scientists don't need to engage in PR. You do the science, and if it supports your conclusions it will stand on its own against skeptical/critical review. What's more, other scientists and research organizations can review the work. To the lay public, the reputability of the source organization and those reviewing the work will shape the public's confidence in the results. The more who review, and the more trusted those who that take part in reviewing the work, the more accepted the results will be. There are people, other scientists, and organizations who dedicate themselves to communicating science to the public, take Michio Kaku for one...." - Andrew Skretvedt

and what that means: "And this bit of information singlehandedly explains possibly the entire history of Skype over the last few years. Want to know why they never opened up to developers in a meaninful way? It’s because they couldn’t. They can’t even tweak their own core source code to allow it. Skype has never disclosed this, but it must be a source of monumental frustration for them." - Chris Heath

there will be something that rises from skype's ashes if it does go away (but i doubt that it will) - Chris Heath
Net-neutrality issue is a little scary. Natural impulse of providers would be to tier up and preferentially classify their own applications/services. But...if the market were truly free/unfettered, do you think that situation wouldn't last long as scrappy up-starts with a net-neutral policy setup and steal away like-minded subscribers? I think so...but it would take a really free market with much lower barriers to entry. Realistic? - Andrew Skretvedt from IM
Skype jitters may be like Vonage. I really thought Vonage was goin' bankrupt a couple years back, but somehow they've still got dialtone. There will be a deal struck. The goal may be acquisition or farming the owners for as much cash as possible. - Andrew Skretvedt from IM

ccheath, yeah, it's seems you're right. It's interesting how the internet needs network providers to be open and cooperative to work well. If it get's too disjointed, it's value plummets. I think this would eventually work as one factor (among others) pushing providers naturally toward neutrality, if there was no regulating gov't. But, we're going to be too timid to experiment with... more... - Andrew Skretvedt from IM

Andrew, yeah the internet spawned from Gov. research and after collaborating with academia it bloomed into the net we all love and know now (which has since been brought into our capitalist system with corporations now owning most of the infrastructure). The mutually assured destruction is probably what keeps the net mostly neutral in our current 'free market' - Chris Heath

Bearish signs for regional non-TBTF banks - http://shadowcapitalism.com/2009...
If this does occur, and I cannot see any reason why it would not happen in some manner in the near future, then it will be yet another example of the unintended and starkly negative consequences of ostensibly positive government intervention. The cynically bent reader will also note the irony of how this helps favored big business achieve greater control over the marketplace. In a free/unfettered marketplace w/less regulation and no bailouts, these TBTF big-leaguers would pop, and some of the regionals now in jeopardy would find themselves with key opportunities to lever their more conservative business management to replace those failed monstrosities. Government IS the problem. It created the excess cash to make these bad-boys TBTF, it came to their rescue, it's rescue is killing the good (or at least not-as-bad) guys, and if it's not halted, it'll one day wreck everything that was ever uplifting, honest, and prosperous about this country. - Andrew Skretvedt
