Want to Remember Everything You'll Ever Learn? Surrender to This Algorithm - http://www.wired.com/medtech...
We are used to the idea that normal humans can perform challenging feats of athleticism. We all know someone who has run a marathon or ridden a bike cross-country. But getting significantly smarter — that seems to be different. We associate intelligence with pure talent, and academic learning with educational experiences dating far back in life. To master a difficult language, to become expert in a technical field, to make a scientific contribution in a new area — these seem like rare things. And so they are, but perhaps not for the reason we assume. - Andrew Bonventre

What didn't work for me: 1) The IDEO stuff. They had 12 people brainstorming about how to build a better toothbrush that people won't throw away and in addition to all of the time they're spending talking about it, they went through dozens of Post-It notes, and had purchased what looked like hundreds of toothbrushes for research purposes that were likely to get thrown away as well. The whole thing seemed super wasteful (and maybe that was the point of showing it). 2) Karim Rashid. He said a lot of things that sounded good but when you look at his work, I don't know that he actually believes any of it. 3) Marc Newson. What the hell was he on about? - Andrew Bonventre

"According to Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) spokesperson J.D. Guidi, 21,832 customers lost power in Los Altos, Mountain View, Los Gatos, Cupertino and Sana Cruz. Guidi said the cause of the outage is still being investigated, but the company knows it resulted from a mishap at the Monta Vista substation in Cupertino." http://lahstalon.org/news... - Paul Buchheit

There are a couple of people who I don't like and they don't like me.. I would rather not meet them if I could help it. Except they are spouses of some of our very close friends.... does this happen often? What does one do?
I am normally polite to them but it gets uncomfortable quite often :( - Bindu Reddy
You can choose your friends and lovers, but you can't pick theirs. - Alex Scoble
Yup... I suspect over time these friends will slowly grow apart because their spouses don't like you.. this is so sad as it is really difficult to find good friends who you can connect easily with. - Bindu Reddy
he he... maybe. Guess I am too "blunt" for them... Honestly I try to be polite though. :) - Bindu Reddy
I think I will have the same problem soon. :( I wish I knew what to do as well. - EricaJoy
Yeah, we've drifted away from people because of this. I generally tried to stay away from those spouses, but my husband would insist on them coming over and annoying me. - Anika
A friend of my wife would come over, and she talks incessantly. I'd be pleasant to her, but after a while, I'd make my excuses and slope off to my desk here, and spend the rest of her visit online. She quit coming, because she told my wife that she knew I didn't like her, because I always disappeared. It wasn't that I didn't like her, she just bored me to tears. - Ian May
Just be cordial if you have to meet them. - Shevonne
Sounds like (you think) they don't like you because you're too blunt. Why don't you like them? - ·[▪_▪]·
I have them too. I call them 'in-laws.' - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Cage match - Rodfather
I was just speculating that one of the reasons they don't like me is because I am blunt. It all starts with having nothing in common. e.g. we like to drink and he/she doesn't. Than they don't end up having as a good a time as their spouse and than they sub-consciously start blaming you.. of course this is just me psycho-analyzing :) - Bindu Reddy
I'm pretty blunt and my husband's friends are over-sensitive crybabies. I sigh because I'm pleasantly stuffed and they look at me, "What was that for?" They think that because I look at them, that means I want them gone. For such people, there's nothing to do but let them go. When I hear back from my husband their nutjoby reenactments of what never happened, I'm glad they don't come over any more. - Anika
@Spidra :( it sucks when that happens - Bindu Reddy
@Chris We tend to do quite a few things as a couple.. that is prob. what makes things a bit more complicated. Also a lot of times both my husband and I end up liking the guy a lot and than the woman feels left out - Bindu Reddy
@Spidra agree... - Bindu Reddy

ha ha Chris... good soln. Not sure my matchmaking efforts have worked well :) @Andrew, the peer review analogy is hilarious. Peer reviews are a whole other story - Bindu Reddy
As Mary J Blige says, "No More Drama". Either try to arrange 1-1 hangouts with your friends more than group stuff (I know hard with some couples), or learn to accept the lameness of the situation... - Maneesh

Back injury diagnosis: Swollen disc. Treatment: two weeks of Advil 24/7. Let's hope that breaks the cycle!
Thanks Chris. The pain's not bad really. The Advil is to reduce swelling for a prolonged period so the damage can be repaired. - Kevin Fox
I've had back problems for many years, including surgery to clean up a ruptured disc (which helped immensely, fwiw, but that was after several years of having problems.). They said to use OTC Advil rather than 800mg Motrin/Ibuprofen tabs? Walking (when not in too much pain) actually helps strengthen the core muscles that support the back too. - Ken Gidley
Try spinal decompression is works wonders for disc problems! - Anne Haynes
