Harvard physicist Kevin Black investigates rumors that the particle accelerator may, in fact, soon be shut down—by ripples from the future. - http://fqxi.org/communi...
"The authors of this paper claim to show that other terms can be added to the quantum mechanical action that are consistent with current theory and experiment. However, some of these possible terms include conditions in the future that need to be taken into account and summed over. That is to say, what happens in the future could (according to this paper) affect what happens in the present. Why the LHC? The authors argue that these sorts of time-violating interactions could be associated with whatever new particles we create at the LHC. For example, the production of a large number of Higgs particles in the future could have a backwards-in-time causal effect on the machine that produced them, stopping the machine from ever running."

I've been thinking about this issue of the future effecting the past for some time. I think it's true, but impossible to prove. I even wrote a blog post about it, but I'm not sure if anyone understood: http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com/2007...
- Paul Buchheit
This would account for the observer bringing the universe into existence, even though the creation of the universe pre-dates the observer.
- Bret Treasure
It seems like there are some people working on making the future effecting the present possible to prove. Impossible is such a strong word.
- Clare Dibble
Really? There are so many things that have been impossible to prove for so long! But that might not be the same impossible you're thinking of.
- j1m
Not impossible, just currently unimaginable.
- FFing Enigma
I made you post this. But I can't prove that I did.
- Louis Gray
WOw! This changing the present stuff really works! :)

Schroedinger called, wants his Cat back.

Sorry, tell him his cat died when we opened the box.

so what's the period of time involved here? are we dealing in units of Planck time? do Higgs bosons show up a couple of picoseconds at the target before they are supposed to? Or is the LHC spewing Higgs NOW, before it has been turned on, before it is even finished? What if some CERN janitor holds up a bucket to the LHC, collects all the Higgs bosons before it has even been turned on, and wins the Nobel Prize?
- Karim
Very cool! Science fiction meets real life...
- Mitchell Tsai
also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki.... now i'm wondering if what the janitor is collecting in his bucket is not Higgs bosons, but rather *anti-Higgs* moving *backwards* in time. if mass is a result of Higgs, then does anti-mass and anti-gravity come from an anti-Higgs field? ;-)

I use Diigo because it has more features than Del.icio.us - highlighting, saving pages, multi-word tags, and various other things. Also, it can be set up to save everything you bookmark on Diigo to del.icio.us or several other bookmarking sites so you always have a backup.
- David Worrell
Sometimes, with Diigo, you visit pages and you can see notes that other visitors have left about the content. It's friggin awesome.
- Rahsheen the Dream
You can also send bookmarked items straight to Twitter. Plus about 100 other features.
- Tac Anderson
Sometimes it's awesome, sometimes it isn't - like when people "test out" the comment feature and put stupid comments on the google search page. But overall, more awesome than not. :)
- David Worrell
It's a great research tool and more feature packed than any other bookmarking site. I just wish their search was powerful.

"Our server is temporarily unavailable" - well maybe I'll check it out later.
- Victor Ryden 美久太阿
what david worrell basically summed up. i prefer it over delicious, but it syncs with delicious so it's perfect. the features i like most are the highlighting and simple tag editing. way more functional than other social bookmarking sites i've used.
- Cee Bee
i don't use any of those services lol FF FTW
- Mona Nomura
you've convinced me. I'm signing up!
- Jasmin Smith
Used Diigo for quite awhile, then without warning my account was deleted, after several emails was finally informed that my account was flagged as spam, and therefore deleted, no warning, no offer to restore, just deleted! As was stated since everything sent to Diigo can also be sent to Del.icio.us I still had bookmarks, just think the whole matter could have been handled better. So consider yourself informed.
- Vox
That's odd - I'm not getting server errors here.
- David Worrell
http://timhoeck.com/2008... - I did a review on this a while back, suggesting people give Diigo one week to try it out. Not many takers, but that's ok, the more people that try it will see how many great features they have over the "new" delicious. Hope you are enjoying it Shey!
- Tim Hoeck
Thanks Tim. I've been using it for design stuff and so far it's been good!
- Shey
i would switch to Diigo but for one thing: Firefox integration is awful. i don't want another toolbar. let me stick a button or two on an existing toolbar, and i'll be happy.
- Trent Olson
You know, Evangeline, I never even paid attention to the r-click menu. Cool beans.
- Rahsheen the Dream
@Trent -- yeah that's annoying, which is why I hide the Diigo toolbar
- Shey
Diigo doesn't have tag bundles. Not an option for me.
- Meryn Stol
@Meryn I'm starting to use tag bundles in Delicious as well
- Shey
It's just better in many ways. The auto suggesting of tags, the groups, the community, the sharing....it's just more social and I love their toolbar! You can do a lot with Diigo, but it's perfectly fine to not use all of it's capabilities.
- Corvida
frankly, not a big fan of Diigo. started using it, but its more awkward to use and its bookmarking panel is not as simple as delicious. there is another discomfort. the fact that it has all these abilitites of exporting, commenting etc is fine but there is no compelling need for all that, IMHO. its all optional. simple bookmarks, with group tags and possibility of subscribing to others' bookmarks is the essential stuff. simple is good :)
- Hayk
the wedding picture. the guy on the horse statue in the water fountain. omg. hilarious.
- Christine Lu
Sorry - Tad's been busy CODING. I only photobomb any photos lindsay's trying to take... and i do that all the time until she punches me... and then a couple times more.
- iTad
Dude, so what'll happen if photobombers take a group picture? Imagine me, you, Chris P in a picture together? Wow. Terrible.
- Mona Nomura
my favourite is the one with the toilet paper in the foreground -- if you've already got a roll of tp in the frame, why not photobomb it?
- Trent Olson
We still podcast and, yes, it's a lot of work. Much harder than posting a few comments, but that's the love we put into it. I dare say there is a new set out there picking up where your favorites left off. It's time consuming and really not profitable for most so there will be churn. Since its not the hottest thing, many abandon it for FF and Twitter. That just means better content in my eyes. Visit http://cstechcast.com if you're interested in our podcast for IT pros.

In classic MSM form, the NYT got it wrong - twice. First they stuck a business story about the BlogHer convention in the Fashion and Style section. Then, when blogger Amber Naslund wrote a scathing response on her blog (and sent a matching letter to the ed), the Times called and asked her to change her letter before it could be printed! A must-read article about how clueless the MSM can be in dealing with new media and bloggers.
- Daniel Smith
Thanks for the "Like" Robert, this is an important story that deserves exposure.
- Daniel Smith
I think the title is incendiary, but the post itself raises a number of legitimate concerns.
- Jill O'Neill
Let's see how long before they notice. Just realized I have a MSFT guy on my twitter friends and I retweeted this there. Hmm..
