There were some bugs in the "Twitter publishing" code that caused some entries to get published on Twitter when they should not, and others to not get published when they should. I've cleaned up the code to eliminate these problems, but it's possible some settings were lost. Please verify your settings at http://friendfeed.com/setting...
I apologize for any lost or unwanted tweets. Please let me know if you spot any other problems. - Paul Buchheit
Cheers for this Paul. How cool is it that one of the founders of FF still gets his hands dirty in the code. Once a coder, always a coder :-) - Keith Bennett from Nambu
Thanks Keith :) By the way, if none of your posts are making it through to twitter, it may be that you changed your password. To verify, simply click "Save changes" at http://friendfeed.com/setting... and we will check that your Twitter credentials are still good (and sign-out then back in to fix). - Paul Buchheit
Matthew, in general all the same settings that the old ui had are available on the new one (plus a few more), though they are now divided on to several different pages. You should be able to reach all of the the settings by clicking on the word "settings" below your name in the top-right part of the page (the dialog shows a few, and links to all the others). - Paul Buchheit
You can filter by service by searching for service:twitter (or whatever service you like), and of course that can be combined with other search operators as well. See http://friendfeed.com/search... for more. - Paul Buchheit
Thanks Paul, sounds like you pulled an all nighter to fix these. - Robert Scoble
Yeah, unfortunately the code had gotten rather involved since it was trying to support both the old ui and the new (the old ui worked on a per-service basis instead of letting you decide individually on each entry), and the logic sometimes became inconsistent. I simplified it quite a bit, so there should be less room for bugs now :) - Paul Buchheit
Thanks, Paul. :) - Josh Haley
Nice try, Matthew, I congratulate you on being awake, and carpe-diem'ing Paul here, but have to disappoint you - if FF wanted us to have favicons, they'd already issued us our favicons. Do you see any favicons that made the transition from earlier version. No? You think Paul nuked them by mistake... be my guest, and I'll be looking forward to the next couple of years' worth of your pleading for favicons when you could be learning to live both here and thereater without them. - ianf ⌘
I'm a bit confused about the "Post my FriendFeed entries on Twitter by default" and "FriendFeed (when there's no Cc box)" options. Are these exclusive? Does checking the first one mean all my FriendFeed posts will get posted to Twitter even if I uncheck the Cc box? - Tony Ruscoe
Paul, thank you thank thank you for the "Check CC Twitter box by default" option!!! That's one step closer to only needing Friendfeed. I'm almost ready to dump Google Reader AND Twitter now! - caj
Thanks Paul! - Edwin Khodabakchian
Tony, the "cc twitter by default" option sets whether then checkbox is checked or unchecked by default in the share box and bookmarklet. The other option ("when there's no cc box") applies mostly to the API and other off-site interfaces, such as email (mail share@friendfeed.com) and IM. For any given post, only one setting applies. - Paul Buchheit
I publish to Twitter by default but now link directly to the source. I figure that those finding outside of FF want to go to the source (while those reading on FF are already seeing the discussion). - Mike Reynolds
Hi Paul, about 15 mins ago I "shared" an item from FF here to "my feed" and "cc Twitter". But still not showing up on Twitter. Just thought I'd let you know. - Brian
Thanks Brian. It turns out there was a bug in the "Share" feature that sometimes caused us to sometimes not send the tweets (the new code errors on the side of not sending tweets). It's fixed now though. Please let me know if you spot any others. - Paul Buchheit
Paul, that did the trick! Thanks for looking into that. BTW, that was a quick fix! Just shared an item on FF and it pushed thru to Twitter instantly. - Brian
Hello Paul, when I try to publish just my google talk status to twitter and have "Link to source site instead of FriendFeed conversation" selected, it doesn't send the tweet. I'm not sure if this is because twitter seems to be having difficulty right now or if it's the lack of a source link because it's a google talk status? - ehaab
ehaab, publishing to Twitter was broken this morning, so no updates went out. It should work fine now however, including publishing updates from Google Talk. Sorry about that. - Paul Buchheit
thanks! it was driving me batty trying to figure out why it wasn't taking. - ehaab
I think it's still broken. I just posted via the Bookmarklet and CC'd twitter... no go. EDIT: my latest one just posted, must be intermittent. - Daniel Sims
Hi Paul, Mine is still not working. I have also checked the setting page. - zahedzadeh

After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages? - Mark Trapp
Mark: direct messages are accessed using the feed ID "filter/direct". Read more about feed IDs at http://friendfeed.com/api.... Also direct messages appear in the "home" feed. - Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: ahhh, I see it now. I missed it when skimming that list over. Thanks! - Mark Trapp
Can you post the wget version of the command line? - Gabe
Gabe: wget --user=bgolub --password=passwd --post-file=MyPhoto.jpg http://friendfeed-api.com/v2... should work. In theory. Edit: nope. I'm not sure it's possible to do with wget. - Mark Trapp
Thanks God it is New API. - Alp B. from iPod
Nice progress here with this release! - Micah
I love it! - friday night
Why is wget questionable? - Gabe
Gabe: wget doesn't support multipart forms as a design decision. If you post a file, FriendFeed returns a 404, and if you post data, the query is too long for wget to handle. - Mark Trapp

Awesome! Now lets see support for more web services... - Jac Falcon
saw that, and it was mega-helpful. bravo. - Nathan Chase
Shoot. Now I need a subscription. - Josh Haley
I'm all for improving the format of notifications, but wonder (aloud) if it is such a smart move to include the Approve/Reject link right at the top (unless it only appears in private feeds to which someone has requested access). Right now we have the option of blocking/ rejecting a subscriber at any time but presumably not at the very outset. This may lead to more of a walled gardens' mentality, already very prevalent at FF. - ianf ⌘
ianf: approve/reject is only for private feeds. Public feeds just have a link to subscribe back :) - Benjamin Golub
Nice - Grant Bierman
that's great! - K.D.
LIKEY. - Steven Perez
I noticed this one! Such informations about people who subscribe to me on FriendFeed are useful, and makes it easy to quickly get in the conversation. Thanks for the good job! - Thierry R. Andriamirado

Gmail automatically showed me the images in a subscription email, even though I never told it to (you know how gmail has the 'display images below' option). further, it doesn't give me the option to hide the images. not that I'd want to, but how are you bypassing gmail's security feature to hide the images? - chrisofspades
Chris, we don't do anything special. I'm not sure how gmail decides what images to show, you'd have to contact them or check the gmail help. - Casey Muller
Casey, you sure FriendFeed's founders didn't use some of their "we created Gmail" mojo? ;) - chrisofspades
Chris, the "show images" only applies to external images hosted on other sites. Gmail doesn't show those by default because doing so would allow people to "bug" email. We include the images with the email so that they can be displayed immediately. - Paul Buchheit
ahhhh that explains it. thanks Paul. - chrisofspades from email

Teen Decomposes Plastic Bag in Three Months | Wired Science | Wired.com - http://www.wired.com/wiredsc...
Teen Decomposes Plastic Bag in Three Months | Wired Science | Wired.com
"Plastic takes thousands of years to decompose — but 16-year-old science fair contestant Daniel Burd made it happen in just three months. The Waterloo, Ontario high school junior figured that something must make plastic degrade, even if it does take millennia, and that something was probably bacteria. The Record reports that Burd mixed landfill dirt with yeast and tap water, then added ground plastic and let it stew. The plastic indeed decomposed more quickly than it would in nature; after experimenting with different temperatures and configurations, Burd isolated the microbial munchers. One came from the bacterial genus Pseudomonas, and the other from the genus Sphingomonas. Burd says this should be easy on an industrial scale: all that’s needed is a fermenter, a growth medium and plastic, and the bacteria themselves provide most of the energy by producing heat as they eat. The only waste is water and a bit of carbon dioxide." - April Buchheit from Bookmarklet
So why is carbon sequestration a good idea when it's all complicated and expensive, but bad when it involves burying plastic bags in landfills? - Paul Buchheit
I think it's better to sequester carbon as dirt than as bags. - Gabe
But if it's already in plastic bag form, why not leave it that way instead of turning it into CO2? - Paul Buchheit
Paul: that's exactly what I've been thinking. Particularly since the City of Seattle no longer allows residents to sequester food based carbon in landfills and instead requires us to burn it into compost. - Hayes Haugen
Dirt is useful because you can grow stuff in it. Most waste products are not so useful. - Gabe
Yes, but the choice isn't between dirt and plastic -- it's between plastic and CO2. - Paul Buchheit
I have to agree with Paul on this one: atmospheric CO2 is much more of a pressing concern at the moment than landfill space. Though I do admire the kid's scientific spirit. - Louis Simoneau
Concur with Louis and Paul. Here's an interesting Penn & Teller bit about landfills: http://www.youtube.com/watch... (from their Bullshit episode on Recycling myths). - Stephen Mack
It doesn't say what the process actually produces. They mention the feed material (plastic) and the waste material (water, CO2), but not the real products. I assumed it produced globs of carbon. Am I wrong? - Gabe
Why would you assume that Gabe? - Paul Buchheit
the carbon in the CO2, perhaps? - Jack Jones
Has nobody considered this for an artificial ecosystem? Compost your scraps for fertile soil, and compost your bags for the CO2 for the plants growing in it. Sure you'll need an airlock on your greenhouse (and an oxy mask whenever you enter it) but you'll have the best damned tomatoes on your street. - Chris Charabaruk
You don't want to leave it in plastic form as it screws up the ocean large! Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... I hope they can use this to make something that would eat the plastic in the ocean rather than the sea life dying from it. - Luke Kilpatrick
Since it said that the waste products were CO2 and water, I assumed there were also non-waste products. The good thing about landfills is that they can later be mined for all the great things that were too cheap to recycle. - Gabe
Yeah, I think landfills have an unjustly bad reputation. When properly managed, they are a great way to deal with garbage that our technology can't yet efficiently recycle. (we're saving for the future!) - Paul Buchheit
that's great news. now i can really finish my threat to all my damn *invincible* plastic bags! (waves fist) - ed fry
The two biggest problems with landfill are the leachate seeping into groundwater (or contaminating local soil) and methane (a greenhouse gas). Even if you can mitigate those problems, they're difficult to eliminate entirely, making the land almost useless once it's full. - Gabe
Gabe, not to minimize the problems, but I live right next to Shoreline Ampitheather in Mountain View, which is built on landfill is proof that the landfill land is hardly useless. - Stephen Mack
It's not just landfills, though. Take the large floating trash gyre of the Pacific, and its effects in the ecosystem. So the tiny little plastic balls in water are fake food, and animals eat them, and then die in various ways, lowering populations and making species even more fragile. Landfill may be a good way if it's contained and monitored more closely, or CO2, in various areas- such... more... - anna sauce
@anna at least he is coming up with a solution rather than just finding more things to complain about - Chris Johnston
anna's right -- the problem is when the stuff ends up in the ocean. Landfills are a good way to keep the stuff out of the ocean. - Gabe
Stop speculating and start experimenting! - Dane Deasy
Lazy online commentators... ;) - Dane Deasy
What's the risk in providing a specific kind of bacteria an unlimited food source? - dthree
Old news. - Will Higgins™
Pseudomonas is living even on tubes used in surgery. It is a major problem. It simply eats the plastic in a wet environment. - Balint

Chrome OS will help kill Silverlight and other non-open tech, preventing msft and others from recapturing the web. (though I expect that it will support Flash by necessity)
Good point. - Robert Scoble
I hope it doesn't. After all we need good media delivery platforms. - Swaroop
yeah, nobody really needs flash. kill it. - zio bonino
Chrome OS might be a compelling case for SVG/<canvas> + <audio> tag replacements for flash. Dunno what SVG's perf is like on WebKit tho. - Matt M (inactive)
Microsoft will port it. It's all about codecs & DRM. Ogg Theora isn't all that great. - Rodfather
Is that Steve Jobs disguised as Zio ? - Swaroop
@Swaroop Yes, we do. Like HTML5. - Benjamin Dobson
@Swaroop eh eh, I've got flash disabled on all my systems :) - zio bonino
@Benjamin I'd prefer HTML web apps over native apps anyday. But it'll take time for it to mature - Swaroop
Rodfather, I don't think that will be an option for msft :). If Chrome is built the way I would do it, there is no installation per-se -- everything runs in the browser and the config in stored in the cloud (and cached locally). The computer is a pure appliance. - Paul Buchheit
@Zio You're the real Steve Jobs - Swaroop
Microsoft moves much too slow to force new standards these days. - Louis Gray
@Louis: IE8 flunking ACID test :) - Swaroop
What about more standard codecs like h.264? That isn't open and is in hardware already. - Rodfather
h.264 is established and must be in there, but it's not a platform like Silverlight is. - Paul Buchheit
I know some of the guys behind silverlight. It is some great technology. Too bad it's from Microsoft and is closed. - Joe Beda from iPhone
A world with no Flash and Silverlight. I can't wait. - Paul Grav
Yeah, it's too bad they didn't open-source it. This stuff with Mono is silly -- if you want to make a real standard you need to make the real implementation be open. - Paul Buchheit
MS are about 10 years too late with Silverlight. And they'll most likely be dragged kicking and screaming into supporting HTML5. - Paul Grav
Zio sez (hopefully humorously): "yeah, nobody really needs flash. kill it" -- have you ever watched a single YouTube video in your life? Like seventeen gazillion other people across the wired world. yeah, you're right, nobody needs Flash. ha! - .LAG liked that
Remember Dave Clark in 1992, "We reject kings, presidents and voting. We believe in rough consensus and running code." - Guy Vander Heyden
.LAG: most YouTube videos are playable without Flash now. My iPhone plays most of them and it doesn't have Flash. Certainly by the time the Google OS came out YouTube would be converted completely to non-Flash capability. - Robert Scoble
Robert: The youtube flash application helps read the flv files on Youtube's servers and provides a UI (decoder too). - Swaroop
Even Google admits they're not sure I'd bit for bit html5 video is less bandwitj consuming than flash. And flash isn't just media delivery, also interesting games and apps like tonepad, splicemusic.com's online sequencer, etc (I'm musically inclined, so most of my examples will be along that line) and please don't suggest we redo it all in java - Ed F from Nambu
Does this mean the next Silverlight release is codename Seppuku? - Jay Cuthrell
Maybe we'll see commercials encoded in movies if everything is open. - Rodfather
Flash is too established to kill off right now, so I'd be surprised if Chrome didn't include flash support. It will take many years to get rid of that thing. First they need to fix the standard browser to not be so broken (lack of video, multi-file upload, etc), then they need everyone to switch to the new html5 solutions. - Paul Buchheit
Scoble ...that may be true, and YouTube plays on my Pre without Flash (yet)...but that doesn't mean that "nobody needs Flash." really? what would replace it? - .LAG liked that
So Google's NaCl http://code.google.com/p... (now integrated within Chrome/Chromium) was just a temporary workaround, right? - Jérôme
Use HTML 5 instead! - Minh Bui
Is it just me or does Native Client (NaCl) remind you of the Microsoft Active X approach? - Daniel Chow
But who prevents Google from taking over the net? - Andreas
youtube videos play on iPhone/iPod Touch as they are higher res mp4 files NOT flv files. It was a big deal when Steve negotiated that deal with youtube. - vijay
You have Moonlight to run Silverlight applications in Linux. Not perfect, but then an application made on Silverlight is "not perfect" by definition - Marcos Marado
The point here is that Google has no motivation to include Silverlight on these machines, and installing software likely won't be an option (it's a web appliance), so it will be absent from a lot of netbooks, just as it is absent from iPhones. That cuts into market share, which is a bad thing for a platform that is trying to compete with more universal tech like Flash and HTML.... more... - Paul Buchheit
@DanielChow: NaCl has very little overlap with ActiveX, apart from running native code. It runs in a provably safe way, and explicitly does *not* allow it to access arbitrary host APIs. But it can be quite useful when you need to run code that would be too slow in Javascript (even on v8): e.g., heavy encryption/decryption, possibly codecs, definitely game physics, and so forth. - Joel Webber
There is a time and a place for Flash and Silverlight so I hope it will run it. There are simply some things you can do which aren't possible, or practical in html/css/javascript. - Steve Temple
Paul: why wouldn't Chrome OS come with Moonlight? And if not, why wouldn't you be able to just install it? And third, why the hell would people want Moonlight for? I never installed it and not even once felt the need to! - Marcos Marado from fftogo
because of moonlight http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlig... the potential userbase of silverlight is greatly improved, agree that projects which don't consider compatibility are limiting their potential - Mike Chelen
@mindboosternoori Ryanair site uses silverlight: http://www.ryanair.com/site... that's the only website I know that uses it - for this you would need moonlight :) - Ihar Mahaniok
Flash is needed for the google os to be useful in education. Many education based websites are flash based. - Willowdale
@Paul "Google is probably paying OEMs to ship with this OS, so instead of paying $x/machine to include windows XP, they will get paid $y/machine to include Chrome." - paying present tense, already? Isn't it enough for OEMs not to have to pay hefty licenses to Redmond, etc., while being able to ship with a free, stable OS+browser combo; they need to be paid to do that as well? - ianf ⌘
I sure hope so. I think the wide array of JavaScript libraries have been killing Flash for years. Silverlight was never really a player. The only think keeping Flash afloat is video - Scott Radcliff
I don't know what's under the hood of Silverlight (nobody knows), but Flash is basically a sprite engine controlled by Actionscript, which is basically an adapted version of Javascript anyway. It's nicely packaged though, and has an army of developers, so it won't go away that easily, at least not until there are Flash-to-Canvas/ HTML5 porting tools/ translators and the like. - ianf ⌘
to follow that logic...photoshop is needed as well - Chris Hofmann
somebody call me when http://playboyarchive.com is working in Chrome OS (it's currently implemented in Silverlight) - Karim
If it gains any traction at all, MS will just make Silverlight version that will run on Google OS. Sure google could block it, but they haven't done so with the Chrome browser. - Jeff Weber
Interesting. I doubt the Google OS will get that big anytime soon though. - Scott Radcliff from email
Silverlight doesn't have a chance now...I wonder what would Adobe Air do. - Saad Kamal
not really, if google want to be open then they will need a plugin architecture for it and then MS could just port for it. I really don't see this troubling mainstream users any time soon. - Darren Stuart
Though I agree with the view that MS monopoly may erode as alternative devices get adoption over PC/Notebook, and these devices will mostly run on open source OS, but it may take years to create a significant change in every day usage of normal users. In the end, OS choice is mostly done by manufacturers, and they would be happy to get paid by open source vendors for putting their OS on... more... - Kaan Bingol
People want media. Hulu, Netflix, Kindle, iTunes, etc. They need to address that or they are DOA. - Hayes Haugen
Hayes, what makes you think it will lack media support? - Paul Buchheit
I don't think it will lack licensed media support but what deals they are able to make will be crucial. - Hayes Haugen
Hayes, i thought you were going to say that Netflix was using Silverlight. ;-) - Karim
Yes, they are, what is their deal with MSFT? Can they do non Silverlight distribution? - Hayes Haugen
i believe the Netflix non-Silverlight distribution is a format called "DVD" that works over the "Snail Mail" protocol. ;-) but clearly if Google is paying OEMs to install Chrome OS, they can pay Netflix to go back to Flash which Chrome OS will probably support "by necessity" ;-) - Karim
How can Google make money from Chrome OS? Or does it want to make money from it except through advertisement? I still can not imagine that all software and service are free and sponsored by advertisements. - Derek Wei
All Chrome OS questions are answered by today's Fake Steve Jobs ;) - Hayes Haugen
Is there a need to make money? If more and more people eschew desktop offline applications in favor of online web based apps, it means more pageviews, more eyeballs, more advertising inventory, plus has the side effect of undermining a big competitor's cash cow. - Ray Cromwell
That's the key, Google wants everything online. They figure the more people online, the stronger they become, and the more money they make. At least that what was said at the Chrome launch. - Scott Radcliff from email
I'm amused that the "backwards compatibility" argument against alternative operating systems has slowly turned into "does it support flash", and when you unpack that it really means "does it play YouTube". I suspect Google will make sure ChromeOS cna play YouTube and they don't need Flash to make sure of it. - Nick Lothian
Is it possible that Microsoft will write Office for the Web using Volta instead of Silverlight? Could be a showcase announcement for their attack on GWT - Ray Cromwell
I think Microsoft is going to focus less on the front-end of the web and more on the back-end, middle tier and database sides. Azure is a big deal that consumers aren't talking about because it's not flashy but will be pretty important to developers (and especially enterprise-level applications) when it's finally ready because everything becomes an interface to the cloud. Microsoft is... more... - Lindsay

Nosense, I want silverlight, flash, html and any other technology in my desktop & mobile phone. Silverlight? yes, there you can develop under Python, Ruby et al, instead of the outdated javascript. - Sebastian Wain
It looks like with Native Client, you should be able to write your Chrome OS app in any language you feel like. So far, they have some examples in C/C++, but one of the things they ported is a Lua interpreter. If Adobe isn't going to invest heavily in fixing the show-stopping bugs on non-Windows versions of Flash, it's inevitably going to die, and there's really nothing either Google or Apple can do even if they wanted to support Flash better. - Victor Ganata
...ActionScript3 is ECMASCript-compliant. I know nothing about standards bodies, and shii like that, but what if Adobe dropped ActionScript and said, "You can now use pure Javascript to build Flash applications..." It wouldn't be a big leap. I'm pretty sure that would shut-up all the Flash haters. And to the folks who say Flash is hanging around just because of video...well, video is... more... - .LAG liked that
Actionscript is just the glue for the more advanced what-iffy graphic functionality of Flash. They can not drop it for Javascript, because it contains additional graphic primitives that JS lacks. But it's not the JS-or-Actionscript that makes it a target for hate, it's other things. Nobody denies that it's pretty capable, but it is also badly written, eats up memory like no other, makes... more... - ianf ⌘
I like this post! - Mohammad Abdurraafay from iPhone
I honestly don't know how necessary Flash is. Apple seems to be doing fine without supporting it. But certainly Gnash and Swfdec should be implementable on Chrome OS. The fact is that without Adobe's full support on a given platform, Flash apps will always be second class citizens on alternate platforms, and so far, there's no indication that Adobe is interested in fully supporting any platform other than Windows. - Victor Ganata
ianf ...you bring up great points about Flash's detriments, as does Victor, but until there's a better way to bring video to the Web, I can't see it disappearing. Adobe seems to keep improving the Flash VM, hopefully they'll address those CPU-hogging issues and make a more efficent runtime. Yeah, I hate hearing the fans kick-in when visiting a Flash-heavy site too. <sigh> - .LAG liked that
alternative to flash video such as ... html5 :) (requires ff3.5) http://www.dailymotion.com/openvid... - Mike Chelen from IM
that only covers video and audio... *sigh* - Ed F from IM
Ed, only??? thats one of the main reasons cited for the continued requirement of flash on popular sites like youtube - Mike Chelen
I know, and it seems I'm the only one who mentions Flash's other uses... :-/ - Ed F from IM
Ed, those other uses can be accomplished through pure Javascript, video was the last remaining stumbling block - Mike Chelen
Still waiting on non-Flash recreations of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch... or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch... Well aware of how someone mentioned higher up how you can combine javascript and svg to get nifty flash-like effects. I want apps like that though ^ Only real alternatives I've seen are Java-based ones, and those runs even slower than Flash. - Ed F
Pardon me, but the OP is a ridiculous conclusion. For that to be the case, Chrome OS would have to kill Windows, OS X, etc altogether. Paul, I understand your viewpoint as being an ex-Google person, but that's just NOT going to happen. Right now the video specification from HTML5 has been dropped because of an impasse, meaning that we may be transitioning from 1 closed-source boss - Flash - to another - H264. Good luck. - LANjackal
But why do these type of apps have to be written in Flash at all? You can easily do the same thing in C, C++, ObjC, Python, Ruby, etc., with the Native Client API that they're building for Chrome. http://code.google.com/p... - Victor Ganata
write them yourself then. until then, I'll stick with desktop apps or Flash equivalents - Ed F from IM
I'm just saying, it's not like Flash is the end-all/be-all. As Apple well demonstrates, some people can live quite well without it. - Victor Ganata
Victor ...i think the answer to the 'why do these have to be written in Flash at all' question is because Flash is installed on such a significant portion of Web browsers. But I recall that Adobe Flex had a competitor, Laszlo/OpenLaszlo, which compiled apps to SWF or to Javascript. Who's to say that Adobe doesn't have the same capability of making SWF apps into JS ones? On one hand, it... more... - .LAG liked that
Ed, such apps are possible with Javascript and HTML5 multimedia features, the question will be how difficult developers find it, and whether the performance is fast enough - Mike Chelen
LANjackal, there is a question of degree in that Flash + H264 uses proprietary software and codec, while HTML5 + H264 requires only the codec. while OGV is no longer part of the spec, it can certainly still be used to have completely open video formats, and recent comparisons have shown it performs well http://people.xiph.org/~maikme... - Mike Chelen
Silverlight's 3 is looking pretty impressive today but tend to agree - Charlie Anzman
still haven't updated yet. Busy with something on Firefox - LANjackal from IM
What everybody seems to be missing about Flash is that it works because there is one implementation which is mostly backwards-compatible and the same across platforms. It beat Java because, among other reasons, Java just didn't work the same across JVMs and platforms. The problem with HTML5 is that it will have a different implementation for every browser, and that means your app/game... more... - Gabe
Yeah the video spec for HTML5 is currently a disaster - LANjackal from IM
Paul, don't you prefer brutal competition SL vs. Flash vs. standards bring to the table by definition? Or are you more into http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - 2020 Google Union - type of ideology? - Kari Honkanen
Kari, I don't understand your question. Competition is good, but with open-source we get that -- no need for flash or SL. - Paul Buchheit
Paul, no, we don't get the same level of competition with open-source only. As long as there's an opportunity for big gains (like in this case to bridge the gap before html 5 era...to satisfy demand), there will be innovations driven by that. I believe we all benefit from a free market economy that includes commercial, closed source, innovations. I am more scared of the possible future... more... - Kari Honkanen
I agree that the future is neither open nor closed, but a mixture of the 2. Been preaching that for a while now, but then again there are the fanatics on either side who can't see anything other than a homogenous future - LANjackal from IM
I wouldn't worry too much amount multimedia. By exposing WebGL, (and hopefully OpenCL), you can offload a lot of compute intensive stuff onto the GPU via GPGPU techniques, and NativeClient is there to take up the rest of the slack, but the for the vast majority of iPhone-like games, I'm willing to bet V8 Javascript on a modern processor is more than enough. That leaves licensing issues... more... - Ray Cromwell
Paul, so are you saying that Google will block both Flash and Silverlight from ChromeOS? That's a new take on 'open.' - Cliff Gerrish
MSFT next smart move: get Chrome OS (it's BSD licensed), inject IE9 and Silverlight into it and go benchmark against Chrome :) - Claudio Cicali
MSFT sucks Claudio :) - Orlando Pozo
@caludio: They've already done that, somewhat. Silverlight 4 Beta supports Chrome. However I'm pretty sure it's probably technically impractical to run another browser atop Chrome OS anyway - LANjackal from IM
Something feels contradictory about a system touted to 'kill' competitors being 'open'. Sounds almost predatory to me. - Karoli
If the concept of open source didn't allow for competitive business plans then quite a few companies that depend on it wouldn't exist. The "happy smiley" image most FOSS zealots promote isn't reflective of reality. There will always be competition, even among the free - LANjackal from IM
I'm not opposed to non-open software, but for OS, browser, etc I prefer that it be open. Cliff, Google isn't going to "block" anything, but they can certainly choose what to include, and my guess is that they won't include SL. As Claudio points out, MSFT can make their own version of ChromeOS that includes SL, which is why open source software is nice (it can't be crippled too much or else someone will fork it). - Paul Buchheit
I have heard somewhere that Fash uses it's own port where Silverlight works over the HTTP port. That's why Netflix works so well. To that, Flash costs more on a sever side because providers can charge more for that port traffic. Could it come down to who is cheaper? (I am fully prepared to be wrong). - Johnny
Johnny, they both use HTTP -- there's no difference there. - Paul Buchheit
Is Chrome OS BSD-licensed? I thought it was using a Linux kernel. - Victor Ganata
@Paul - well, Flash can do P2P stuff over non-HTTP posts, but that is very new (Flash 10 I think). The cost isn't affected anyway. - Nick Lothian
My understanding is that netbooks would have to be absurdly popular for Chrome OS to make a dent in the popularity of Flash or SL. - Gabe
not rly, the defeat of Flash & SL depends on the rise of HTML5, which will b supported by multiple browsers. Unfortunately spec disagreements r holding that up. That's another advantage of closed systems : fewer cooks often makes the broth get done faster lol - LANjackal from IM
it is possible to have smaller groups for open source software, such as google's own gears api http://code.google.com/apis... - Mike Chelen
How is HTML 5 going to defeat Flash and SL? I haven't used it, but I don't see anything in the spec that looks like it could compare. - Gabe
@Gabe - what do you think HTML5 is missing? It does video, drawing, local storage, "threading" via WebWorkers. The biggest hole I'm aware of is the lack of access to webcams & microphones. What have I missed? - Nick Lothian
HTML 5's not "missing" much in terms of its ambition. What it's missing is a consensus among its contributors. Flash and SL have gone through several iterations while HTML 5's been sitting there - LANjackal from IM
Nick: When you say HTML 5 has "drawing", are you refering to the Canvas element? I would not consider an immediate-mode procedural raster drawing library to be much of a competitor to retained-mode declarative vector libraries like SVG or Silverlight. Programming with the Canvas tag is sort of the equivalent of programming in assembly language for bitmaps. - Gabe
@Gabe: I think you've got it upside-down. A Canvas-style API is the fundamental basis on which you can build a retained mode structure like SVG, et al. If a platform includes a retained-mode library as a convenience, so be it. You can build SVG on Canvas, but not the other way around (hacks like IECanvas notwithstanding -- they have horrible performance characteristics and are a nasty abstraction inversion). - Joel Webber
So, if Moonlight (Mono) runs on linux -- Will google make sure it doesn't work on Chrome OS? - Cliff Gerrish
No they won't, because it Silverlight already runs on Chrome as of Beta 4 - LANjackal from IM
Joel: I don't think you said anything contrary to what I said. I just don't understand why any programmer would want to waste time writing an app using a low-level library when I could use a high-level library that implements everything for me. - Gabe
@Gabe - I agree, and people are implementing those libraries now. See http://raphaeljs.com/ for example. Also, don't underestimate the convenience factor. I don't own any Flash development tools, but my text editor works pretty well for Canvas+JS based stuff. - Nick Lothian
Nick: Didn't the author of raphael have some massive rant about how bad the Canvas element is? And I don't have any Flash dev tools either, but I use a text editor for most of my Silverlight development. It is incredibly convenient to be able to type something like <DataGrid ItemsSource="{Binding tabledata}"/> into a text editor and not have to create the data grid myself. - Gabe
Why is Flash a "necessity" for an OS? I enjoy what flash can do, but it is like putting pimped out leather Oldsmobile seats in a Ferrari. It would definitely be nice, but certainly not a necessity. - Dan Douglass
Early post goof up. To your original point, I agree. I like how Google is approaching the internet space with web apps that can be run with out a bloated browser. - Dan Douglass
Dan Douglass: Flash is necessary because so many web sites rely on it. How many people would want to get a netbook that couldn't play FaceBook games or watch YouTube videos? Of course Google is in the unique position of being able to make YouTube work on ChromeOS without Flash, but they probably can't do anything about Hulu, Vimeo, or any of the other video sites out there that require Flash. - Gabe

What would the web look like if each time a developer wanted to change their site, it had to be approved by a committee with a 2 week delay?
Like 1995 when I was trying to upload MBs of data over a 14.4kbps dial-up modem for a website. - John Wang
Like the Apple Store? :) - Ray Cromwell
Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery - Charles Ying
You would be amazed how many large corporations still do this. - dthree
I'm not ignoring the fact that corporations go through a lengthy process to ensure the quality of their products. Of course Facebook does this too, and so do I personally. The point is, we are the ones who are qualified to determine when the app is ready. Apple is just a middleman, and they have a very limited ability to test the quality of our app. - Joe Hewitt
A couple times Apple has caught bugs in our app and notified me of it, but they have also missed huge bugs that went through. The app on the store right now is orders of magnitude more buggy than the one sitting in the review queue. - Joe Hewitt
I can only assume the review process is there for Apple to test compliance with their terms of service, and any bugs they find along the way are incidental. Thank goodness the web doesn't have a terms of service and a review queue. - Joe Hewitt
With 40 apps per day per reviewer, I'm surprised the approval process works as well as it does. - PXLated
Has any other company ever been faced with as many apps in such a short period as Apple - Just curious - PXLated
If we developers always programmed everything to be perfect before releasing it, nothing would ever get released. ; ) - John Wang
it would look like an MMO they release half broken stuff every two weeks like clockwork - Robert Higgins
Sorry, Glen, the context in almost all of my tweets relates to iPhone development :) - Joe Hewitt
Of course, Apple can do whatever they want, and I can go elsewhere. I am making suggestions on how they can improve their flea market and prevent people from going elsewhere. I believe the web has set the precedent that big platforms like the iPhone can thrive even without a centralized quality control bottleneck. - Joe Hewitt
But Joe, the iPhone isn't like the web as a whole - it's more like gaming platforms and probably more open then they are. Will be interesting to see what happens on Android and if in fact it is more open, and if so what kind of chaos may ensue. - PXLated
Are you serious - "prevent people from going elsewhere" - Where? And pass up the iPhone audience/marketplace? Even if Android is a success, developers won't leave iPhone in spite of all the bitching. - PXLated
The iPhone is not a "gaming platform" until they tell me I can't develop anything but a game for it. A significant chunk of iPhone apps, mine included, are basically iPhone-optimized websites written in Objective-C. I admit that I don't see anyone, myself including, abandoning Apple over this issue, but I do believe that the quality of apps on the platform is being hurt by it. Just because other platforms are even more restrictive, like Playstation or some mobile platforms, is not an excuse. - Joe Hewitt
It's not an excuse but none is needed, Apple developed a platform and set the rules just as the gaming platforms did/do. I'm personally not sure the (overall) quality is being hurt either. - PXLated
In fact, maybe Apple should be a lot more restrictive - 65K apps probably confuses the hell out of many users. Maybe they need a rating system and then start eliminating the poorly performing apps. Get it down to a reasonable (best of breed) 5K ;-) - PXLated
"Apple developed a platform and set the rules" - well there's a news flash. I don't think anyone needed to be informed of that. I think Joe's just trying to make the point that centralized control isn't necessary for the good apps to rise to the top. Would you consider the web to be a success if there were 65k sites (please don't get pedantic and point out that sites aren't apps; the argument holds for any reasonable multiplier)? - Joel Webber
"Get it down to a reasonable (best of breed) 5K" - And exactly from what larger pool would you take that best of breed? If the breed's too small, you can't *have* a best-of-breed. The web's an unholy mess, but its size and chaos are precisely what makes it successful. People still manage to find the good stuff. - Joel Webber
It would look like the website where I work.... - Don Schuetze
What would the web look like if a developer could be shut down for an alleged ToS violation? Like FaceBook? - Kevin Marks
That's a lot better than how web applications ship. Please allow a few months before we change it. - Burcu Dogan
Apple is famous to put limitations at the beginning and then drop them ( remember drm?) I am pretty confident that the approval process will be easier and quicker in the near future. - funkyboy from iPhone
You would have [insert any corporate review process here]. For significant changes, this is understandishable. However, it gets insidious when everything looks like a nail ... even if it isn't. - Joe D'Andrea
read it late though, but i would hate it, then maybe web might not be as popular, interesting and powerful - testbeta

Flickchart - The Better Way To Rank The Best Movies Of All Time_1242171111091.png
Show all
1. Users also feel empowered by having their lists contribute to the site's collective list of the “Greatest Movies of All Time”, and receive targeted recommendations based on the acquired data from all users. - Flickchart
2. Website, newspaper, and magazine critics offer excellent insight into the qualities of movies. The problem is that they are all rating movies individually with some sort of point value – using stars, a 1-to-10 scale, or percentages. When these ratings are combined to create the “Greatest Movies of All Time” lists, they always seem to come up short of where we think they could be, and are inherently limited in their ability to furnish a final, authoritative, and holistic list of a user’s favorite movies. - Flickchart
3. Flickchart provides a superior strategy for rating movies by taking any two films, presenting them to the user visually, and asking them "Which is better?". By always using this direct comparison, we are able to efficiently calculate the best-liked movies by our user base and combine their choices into a site-wide list that accurately judges what the “Greatest Movies of All Time” really are. This process, aside from being more accurate, is inherently a lot more fun. - Flickchart
4. While ranking, the users will be presented with far more movies than they would ever take the time to look up on other movie sites, and in so doing we help them effortlessly become explorers of new films and genres. As they encounter movies they haven’t seen, we note those for them and compare them to our site-wide aggregated rankings (calculated via an algorithm we’ve developed), to provide crowdsourced recommendations that are specifically tailored to find the best movies our users have never seen. - Flickchart
5. Flickchart is currently self-funded, designed, and developed by Jeremy Thompson (http://friendfeed.com/prophasi) and Nathan Chase (http://friendfeed.com/nathanc...), who are both web developers in Orlando, Florida. Nathan designs and implements the layout and complete user experience of Flickchart, while Jeremy develops the programming logic and data algorithms that power the site. - Flickchart

BTW, FriendFeed (and Tumblr) should now be a built-in option on Send To http://www.google.com/reader... - Mihai Parparita
Thanks, Mihai. - Louis Gray
So what is the code to send it to a particular room? If I wanted it to flow in the public FF I would just click 'share'. - Paul Arterburn
Whoa, sharing to a particular room would be epic :) Would probably have to create a shortcut code for each room instead of multiple rooms... - Zulema ❧ spicy cocoa tart
Ya, I really just have one group for this - public share or private share among close friends (private FF room). That would also let me DM the link to a FF user if I wanted a *really* private share. - Paul Arterburn
What about diigo ? - stanjourdan
Would also like to know, if there is a way to configure Google reader to send to a certain group in FF? - Gerald Hildebrandt
At the very least, it's always good to know the code. - Mike Reynolds
tried 'http://friendfeed.com/$userna...', but did not worked out - Gerald Hildebrandt
AFAIK sending to a Room is a bit painful. I tag the item in GReader. Then subscribe to that tag's RSS in the FreindFeed Room. A little laborious to set up, but quick when sending - you just tag. And wtih GReader's pubsubhubhub they show up in Room immediately. - Nick in Manila

Just forewarning - the public will be overwhelmed. It's too much to launch with, IMO - way too many features. (I'm in the developer sandbox preview) - Jesse Stay
@Jesse Thanx 4 the forewarning I kind of have that feeling when the video presentation presents itself it will take a while to look around its features. I always take my time to test features - polou/indigo_bow
I expect a steep learning curve. I've barely started learning about GReader, for that matter. Still, I'll be there when Wave launches, for sure. - Dennis Jernberg

Unless they fix up a lot between now and then people are going to be very, very surprised (not in a good way!). Release early, release often is great, but I'm not sure people's expectations are realistic. - Nick Lothian
Let's see what it's like then. Thanks for the info. - Rick Cogley
Great now how long till Google buys Twitter to integrate it into Wave - Rob Cairns
Rob, there is already a Twitter extension called Twave that integrates Twitter into GWave. - Kol Tregaskes
Rob: I highly doubt that Google will buy Twitter as it doesn't fits any were with their existing products and with its integration with Wave what's the point of buying it. - Usman Bashir
Usman - they will find a way to leverage it into Wave or another product.. I really believe Google is going going to make a big splash with Wave and they will have some big surprises in store. Google is not King of the cloud for a reason:) - Rob Cairns
Thank Heavens for Google!! Every Computer User owes Google a Huge Thank U for FREEing us all from the Shackles of Greedy Monopolistic Crappy Microsoft* ;)) - Billy Warhol

Pre-alpha Google Chrome: Fastest Mac OS X browser by 34% | The Toybox | ZDNet.com
"The speedy Google Chrome web browser has been available on Windows PCs for quite some time, but is not yet finalized for Mac. But recent testing on the latest pre-alpha build, numbered 4.0, reveals that it might just blow all other OS X browsers out of the water." - arnaldostream from Bookmarklet
... reveals that, if speed were the only criteria mac users cared about, ... whoops, they all just lost interest. Bummer. - Joel Bennett
you can find the latest daily build at http://build.chromium.org/buildbo... and I must say its shaping up very nicely. There are still some tweaks here and there but its still pretty solid. I believe that flash doesn't work properly though. - Jonathan Aird
Unfortunately Chrome for the Mac (not Chromium) is lacking several key features available in the Windows version (which itself is lacking key featues). Not having Bookmark folders was a dealbreaker. It's fast, but unreliable so far. It's still #3 on my Mac. (but #1, and the default on my Windows machine). - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
It's that should be "34% when it's running, and not hung" - I still see long wait times in Chrome 3.0.198.1 for the Mac. It's lightning fast when it works. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
That's giving a lot of credit to Apple. I expect that it will be better on Mac once finished. It's SO much better on PC than Safari. The memory and CPU usage for Chrome on Windows is leaps and bounds better on Windows than Safari. And very close on Mac. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Safari on PC has such a terrible UI. All of the widgets have a weird aspect ratio that feels "off" to me. Firefox and Chrome both have really good native widgets that feel right. - Matt M (inactive)
I dont like safari, no matter what OS it runs on. - arnaldostream from IM
As I said in another thread today: WOW I just installed Chromium4 on my Mac, and it is AWESOME. It FLYS. So fast I had to weight the mac down. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'm attempting to use it now but it's not even close to being fast for me. I downloaded 23514 and Firefox smokes it for loading and rendering and even scrolling. And yes, I did clear the cache on Firefox so it was a fair trial. - Zach Flauaus

Ok so I'm shooting ducks here. is that part of the custom pages open to all? - BairdWilliamson
I'm sorry, but this is the lamest thing FF has done (besides sell to Facebook, perhaps). This should not be default, especially when there's a theme that sends a duck flying across pages distracting you from reading them (it's like 1997 all over again). The only upside is that you can turn it off. It's a neat gimmick the first time, but after that it's just lame and becomes a... more... - Tanath
I'm sorry, Tanath, but I 100.000% disagree with you. Don't like it? Turn it off. Me? I love it. - Stephen Mack
Already have - but it shouldn't be default behaviour. - Tanath
Why not? I bet more people love it than hate it. - Stephen Mack
Look, I'm excited that FF is still being worked on too, but this is arguably a step in the wrong direction. There's reasons why MySpace is going down the toilet, and different themes on every page is one of them. I'm inclined to take that bet, just not at this early point because it's mostly die-hard FF addicts that even know of the feature's existence. - Tanath
As long you guys don't f*** with it, I can't see a problem. Why should FF staff avoid a feature only fearing its possible misuse? I'd rather see an option inside FF to explicitly hide user themes, if they get disturbing. - David Schmidt
On or off, I can't see any themes on friendfeed except what I have in my browser's usercontent.css file. It would have been nice to include an "advanced user" feature that could have allowed us to enter in our own custom CSS for designing our own theme, sort of like how LiveJournal allows. That would have not only allowed customizing on friendfeed, it would also fix the problem with... more... - April
David: you can hide other people's themes in your settings (top right of the page) - Bret Taylor
April, that is a good idea. - joey
The Coolest and Creative FriendFeed Theme http://friendfeed.com/yusuph... (http://friendfeed.com/burakdo...) - Yusuf Ibili
Bret: There ya go, you guys are fabulous and amazing. Nothing to complain about here on FF. - David Schmidt
@joey It was something I suggested over a month ago as a one possible solution to a problem I discovered. http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - April
Comparisons to MySpace seem off, since custom themes involve only four possibilities (background image, background color, bar color and box color) -- no widgets, no custom HTML, etc. And first and foremost, they can be switched off. How many times do you visit someone else's page on FF anyway? Most of the time is in your home feed or different lists. I just don't get the negativity, when it's a fun and optional feature that you can opt out from ever seeing again in about two seconds. - Stephen Mack
I don't know if I consider customizing a few basic settings is really a "Theme". - Steve de Mena
The correct analogy is to twitter.com user pages, right? - Stephen Mack
Stephen, that was our thinking internally, though we also give a bit more control with the checkboxes. - Kevin Fox
Forcing themes on others is bad. This needs an opt out. Glad I use custom CSS. - Michael W. May
Michael: It DOES have an opt out. If you don't like it please opt out! Click Settings in upper right, you'll see two prominent check boxes regarding theme display. - Stephen Mack
Kevin: Thanks! You're right, you did twitter one better by letting people opt out of seeing customized themes entirely. - Stephen Mack
Michael, just uncheck the "See other people's themes" checkbox under settings and you won't see anyone else's theme. - Dan Hsiao

Twitter Is Revamping Retweets, Launches A Retweet API
About time! - Amy
Call me old school but I'll miss the humble "RT". - Martin Bryant
More on the RT project: http://mashable.com/2009... - polou/indigo_bow
quoted from Mashable: Granted the four APIs will bring significant additional functionality around retweets, features we’ve never been privy to before, but is it at a cost that takes away some of the intended purpose behind retweets? Eliminating retweet redundancy, adding retweet filters, these are all good, but we’re not entirely convinced we needed a new retweet format. - polou/indigo_bow
Wow, this is huge. Twitter hasn't made a change like this to it's system since, well, since it started. So many advantages but so many disadvantages as well. I like how it will handle the dreaded "RT @user1: RT @user2:" but I don't like not getting to add my input to the tweet. Also it's weird that it shows the original tweeter in my friends feeds and not me, hmm, should be interesting... - Mitchell McKenna
Leo Laporte
I'd like to reiterate my call for Facebook to open source the Friendfeed codebase (as AOL did when it bought Netscape). A federated OpenFriendfeed is the best for users - and fits Facebook's move toward an open social platform. I'll pay to run a server. Would you?
I agree with this fully. - Akiva
I can't imagine that the terms of the acquisition would permit this to happen. Oh, wait... Facebook take FriendFeed open source? Maybe in two or three years after they squeeze every bit of life out of it, ala Google/Jaiku - Ken Sheppardson
Would that mean there would be dozens of Friendfeeds all trying to get us to come to them? - Mark
I support this fully - Ryan

Oh I agree. But with Facebook's record? HAHAH! Oh god, I need a mint. - ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift

I don't think I'd pay, but I'd love to have it open source - Jake Anderson
Worked for AOL. We got Mozilla and they got a much improved Netscape. - Leo Laporte
Leo, I think you have a little too much "hope" on this. Maybe you're just thinking if Facebook was smart, then they'd do that. - Mark
Facebook is much smarter than you're giving them credit for. I think. - Leo Laporte
great idea Leo, i'm 'cautiously optimistic' at this point in time about the future of FriendFeed... lets hope for the best people - Chris Heath
There is no value in that to them. Why open source something that give them a competitive edge. - binmugahid
I do not agree. It destroyed netscape. let Facebook use the best features of FriendFeed in it. Keep the talent like the four ex-google founders. Open source is not the answer to everything. sometimes Closed Source is better for the users as well. Just keep the innovations coming and it will be fine - hasanahmad
They've got the Friendfeed team. That's probably what they really wanted. Getting the open source community working on the FF codebase and contributing it back to Facebook is a win for everyone. - Leo Laporte
On the other hand, I ike to see Laconica (identi.ca) getting more like ff. - Chanux
Wow did this just happen today? - bravestface

Open-sourcing Communicator may have ultimately destroyed Netscape as a brand but without that move, I suspect we'd all still be developing for IE6. Great call, Leo. - Jared Smith

I just can't stand Facebook. To many people I let in from my youth that I don;t want to see - bravestface
You're assuming that Facebook bought the company JUST to get the developers, and not because they want to integrate many/most of the features into their service. If they want the features, they don't want a bunch of clones competing with them. - Joel Bennett
bravestface: That's not FB's fault you let them in. sheesh. - Gus
when will twitter be back up any 1 know - daveccorey
There already is an open source clone of twitter - see identi.ca and laconia or whatever it's called - Doug Holton
True. very True Gus. My own fault. Perhaps I need to setup an Alias account that encompasses what i really want - bravestface
I already run a Laconica server at http://army.twit.tv - I don't think we need another Twitter clone. We need something more like Friendfeed. Or maybe Wave will be the answer. - Leo Laporte
hay hay hay, sin duda un tema un tanto escabrozo, pero entre Facebook y Google, esto no lleva a nada bueno.. i'ts a hard theme, no doubt about that, but between facebook and google we are going to hell !!!!!! - Đoи яамoη
Or Pushbutton? - bravestface
This would be amazing. - Adam Teece
The Wave *protocal* might be a part of the answer... or just giving yourself over to whatever Google wants you to use might work (i.e. Wave, Reader, Gtalk, etc.)... but I don't really see Wave asdirect 1-for-1 FF replacement. - Ken Sheppardson
Too many systems in place - bravestface
They open sourced the Facebook code base (fbopen)... the license is very restrictive, however. FB owns all code modifications. Probably be the same license for FF. - Kurt
In know people that have replaced their email with Twitter....that just isn't right...we need one locator that many systems can reach - bravestface
Great idea Leo. Now let's see what they do, if they're listening. - Kelly Mitchell
Leo - your last comment is why I think Facebook bought Friendfeed: "We need something more like Friendfeed. Or maybe Wave will be the answer." This is going to be a product they will launch in opposition of Google Wave. It will surface Q1 of 2010 and will have some of the same features that Wave has - but be closed sourced to Facebook. - Jeff Vreeland
I see what you mean. Facebook and Google though don't really open source their web apps - Doug Holton
Facebook doesn't seem to have a good reputation with those kind of thing. Facebook promised to open their chat/IM system via XMPP. More than a year has passed since they announced this XMPP system it still did not happen. We still have to rely on screen-scraping methods to implement Facebook chat on third-party IM systems (like the 3rd party Facebook chat plugin for pidgin called pidgin-facebook). - Gideon Guillen
I would love to see friendfeed become opensource. Mostly as a developer I would love to see the code. See how friendfeed works. - mikemcmullan
An "open FriendFeed" could be Facebook's chance to get something lined up to compete with Google Wave. Without it, Google and Twitter are going to own the real-time communication space. - Derek Gathright
Completly agree! - Jamie-Lee Mclean-Davis from Nambu
Open source is the way to so that "The poeple" can do what they want or to a program. E.I. www.Openssourcemaps.com - D Lets from iPhone
Absolutely. - Ian Littman
OS FF would be awesome, but making it a federated service is an entirely different ball of wax. Just ask the Wave guys. They said during the original IO presentation that federation was one of the harder parts (though FF would be easier w/o the real time editing piece, but still). - Patrick Sullivan
OS FF - Malcolm Bastien
I think a integrated RSS/FB/FF/GW/Twitter client will be an interesting real time inflection point - Jim Posner
I totally agree Leo. I can't help but think that this deal is going to be a massive success or a massive flop - nothing in the middle! It's simple things like opening the FF source that can help make it a massive success IMHO. - Chris Cathcart
correction: Http://www.openstreetmap.org - D Lets from iPhone
I would just like to see the real-time commenting open-sourced. - patrick
wow Leo you sure know how to get a topic started - Joe Geeting
I actually was hoping Twitter would be the one to grab it up. Seems like a natural progression for Twitter to make. I just hope Facebook doesn't bury it and they actually use it. As far as open source it? Could be interesting. - Michael Bower
In a secure and closed environment it could be a powerful communication/collaboration tool for businesses. Features of a chat, but persistent. Ability to share photos & files... - Ken Bauer
definently - Ryan Peach
Right-o - Myrddin Emrys
I would love for this to happen. Federated Friendfeed servers would be quite fun and is the logical step for a great Internet service which aggregates disparate information from all over. - rob friedman
You know what, Jaiku was open sourced. And nobody uses it anymore. The fact that "it" (FB open sourcing FF) will happen or not is completely irrelevant. Because you will all be hopping on the next early adopter miracle train (read:service) anyway. So stop whining and move on. Federated this, federated that. identi.ca tried that. Again, no users. It's nice to talk the talk. Especially at times like this. You just gotta walk the darn walk afterwards. Which people usually forget to do. - Vlad Bobleanta
Whoa... you should enhance your calm. Communities are finicky things and sources like Microsoft that are poo-pooing Open Source IMHO is the real problem. Me thinks that a better source of education to dissipate the FUD floating in the global porcelain bowel instead of modern political tactics are are needed to solve real problems. - Myrddin Emrys
Leo, like this idea. - Kol Tregaskes
adoption of open standards such as OMB, which is used by laconica, would allow federation among servers - Mike Chelen
It will one hell of a start, I doubt it though... - Dobromir Hadzhiev
It would be a good thing, but not sure it it will ever happen - Thomas Lee
I support this as well. - Carlos Ayala
Now this is something I would fly out to support at the launch... - Johnny
Another reason why Leo kicks ass - Mo Kargas
If FriendFeed went open source identi.ca / lamonica would be dealt a serious blow. FriendFeed could become even more powerful if the people could tinker with the code and add many features that remain missing, or strengthen features that currently are weak. It will be interesting to se how FB utilizes their newest acquisition... - Randy Shapiro
FYI, there's already an open source alternative: http://www.fftogo.com/e... - Marcos Marado from fftogo

i would pay - cheapsuits
ive all ready got a amp for 5 bucks 4 twitter that was suspsose to help twitter run better guess what it dont - daveccorey
no definitely not. it would shift everything to Chinese government... Damn, millions would have their rest life in prisons. - xia
Any chance we'll see more code? - Ken Sheppardson
i'm willing to wait to see what F8 brings... have you seen Jesse Stay's speculative post Ken? - Chris Heath
Paul Buchheit
Obviously I can't provide a lot of detailed plans and guarantees, but I can tell you that I'll do my personal best to ensure that the FriendFeed users and community are treated right. I love this product too, and don't want to see it disappear.
Thank you, Paul. - joey
:) - iTad
Thank you, Paul. Hearing something is always better than hearing nothing =) - FFing Enigma
I think this was a smart move fore FF and FB - Joe Hall
What about the service? - Amit Morson
Thanks Paul. - sean percival
Thanks Paul - Mike Doeff
We don't want it to go either. - Yolanda
I would not expect any less from such a cool guy like you, thanks! :) - Susan Beebe from iPhone
Please keep it going for as long as you can or until you can make Facebook actually work. - AJ Kohn
That's heartening, Paul. Thanks. - Anika
We love you guys and FriendFeed.. we are just a little hurt and worried.. just please give us details as soon as possible. - Tim Hoeck
FriendFeed lets me use people as filters to turn data into information. Facebook doesn't. Until it does, please, Please, PLEASE keep FriendFeed as a destination alive. - AJ Kohn
congrats guys! facebook needs what you got! - Lorna Herf
I'm sorry that I haven't said more about this. As you can imagine, it has been an extraordinarily busy day (and I've barely slept in the past week). - Paul Buchheit
I'll add my plea to the chorus: Please don't take FriendFeed away from us. And don't make us go to Facebook (because we won't). FriendFeed means a lot to a lot of people and the thought that it will dry up and blow away shortly is very disturbing. - Lindsay
It's still great to hear from you Paul. Congrats on that new swimming pool full of cash. :D - iTad
Simply glad you're here now. You've always been a very responsive and transparent team. As much as I cringe at the thought of FF going away, I *am* happy for you and the team. - AJ Kohn
Thanks Paul. - John (bird whisperer)
Thank you kind sir. - Andrew Smith
I request you make it to the next scheduled FFundercats podcast to talk to the community. This announcement deserves a live appearance to the community. - Eric - Feed of Dreams
Have been dealing unsucessfully with Twitter for two days, trying to get logged in...Their password reset page says"Snap we can't find you." I keep writing to Tech Support at Twitter and get their helpful auto-generated Twitter Trouble shooting email. My problem is not there. =( Hope FriendFeed does not get that blaise about helping users. @EV - SashaKane
If FB can't keep the service running, would you consider open-sourcing the thing, so we can? - Christopher Galtenberg from iPhone
Hi Paul, thanks for the assurances. In the future, I would highly suggest that you make this sort of statement shortly after the initial merger release. Thanks again. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Thanks for keeping the passion! - Shane
Nice to hear Paul. Thanks. - Mark Krynsky
I would like to give you a hug right now Paul. However, that would be awkward and April might beat me up so I will just say thank you and press the like button. - EricaJoy
Best news I have heard today. - Angus Burton
Thank you for affirming that. Much appreciated. - Karoli
A few more points that would be nice to have addressed soon. Ability to export data, tool to import friends to Facebook, and will ff.im urls continue to function? - Mark Krynsky
Amelioration?? - heretic_twit
Those that like friendfeed as is should be most pleased with this statement, as it probably means maintenance to keep the current system as is, without as much attention to new features. It's also good news for all those who like both friendfeed and facebook, as facebook will likely adopt the better features from friendfeed - Ivan Kirigin
That means an awful lot to me. - Absentee
This has been quite a day! Can't wait to hear what is next! - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Thank you, Paul. Thank you for coming out from behind the curtain and finally giving us some communication, some semblance of hope. - Akiva
So we can expect a Facebook adaption of this? I like this technology over everyone else! - Shaggy Jenkins
Eric, my schedule is still a little uncertain at the moment, but I'd be glad to appear on a future FFundercats. - Paul Buchheit
That would be a good thing Paul. Thanks. - Eric - Feed of Dreams
Cool :) - Susan Beebe from iPhone
I like this. - Ashish from iPhone
Thanks for making FriendFeed what it is, and lets hope it stays that way, though there's slim chance of that - Aaman (Clone of FF)
Now that I think about it: are you kidding me? They've already stated that FriendFeed's going to be absorbed into Facebook. What kind of sleight-of-hand are you trying to pull now, Paul? - Akiva
@EricaJoy: I have nothing against hugs. :) - April Buchheit
Thanks! - Vincenzo Piromalli
Thanks, Paul. I've been getting more and more depressed thinking about the bad ways this could go. The reassurances help a bit, at least. In fact, just hearing you speak on the point is encouraging - the open lines of communication between the FriendFeed team and its users has always been one of the great things about FriendFeed that I'm afraid will be lost with the Facebook buyout. And yes, a FFundercats appearance would be a great idea. - Jandy
I don't want to read too much into this reassurance but the "personal best" remark made me think like there is not a united FF anymore and that it's up to your personal efforts to prevent it from being eaten by FB :) - Turker Keskinpala
you can sell the tech but the community can not be bought sold transferred or merged - Robert Higgins from m.ctor.org
Turker, I do believe that this deal was the right decision -- I'll write a bit more about that when I get a chance. I say that I'll do my "personal best" because I will -- it would be misleading to make promises on other's behalf :) - Paul Buchheit
Hoping so... practicing patience - Majento
Paul: I'm hopeful that this will be the best for both Facebook and Friendfeed. What you and the staff at FF have done is amazing, with only 12 people! I love the service here. I also enjoy Facebook (one I ignore all quizzes and stupid apps), but in a different way. Hoping some coolness can be brought to both. Good luck to you and your team! - Travis B. Hartwell
this echoes star wars galaxies, incredible unique community. but they upgraded it to be like world of warcraft. this is a replay of the devs soothing messages. the forums were livid the community evaporated. - Robert Higgins from m.ctor.org
When socialmedian was acquired by Xing they left it alone. I hope the same happens here. I'm sure you will do your best though! - Michael Fidler
On behalf of the Dutch citizens our Queen wants to let you know: Thx Paul. - Ton Zijp
Don't know what to say, so lets start with big congrats! from one hand, as an early member of Friendfeed I think we've created here a very cool, collaborative and tech-savvy/passionate community of great people that all probably wish to stick around as much as possible. From the other hand, I know how corporates work and it takes one small decision of share holders to close Friendfeed... more... - Nir Ben Yona
My first reaction is disappointment. I don't believe big corporations do better than small ones. Facebook is inferior to FriendFeed, although it's user base is much larger. Clearly FriendFeed won't survive in the long term, unless it is open sourced. Why not open up and embrace the wonders of the GPL instead of joining forces with the Walled Garden no #1? Facebook don't even operate with permalinks,. - Morten Blaabjerg
Thanks for the explanation Paul. Of course, I congratulate you guys. I think anyone would do the same thing if they were in your shoes :) - Turker Keskinpala
Very bittersweet clicking [Like] on this one. - Nicholas Kreidberg
A big congrats for you guys.. However, I feel kind of sorrow :) - Özkan Altuner
good to hear - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Thank you - but I would very much like our content to stay intact. :) - Mona Nomura
Ryo: if you delete your account everything goes away. I totally disagree with you about Facebook, but that's OK. - Robert Scoble
Good to hear. Unfortunately I think Facebook are going to download the brains of all FriendFeed staff then kill FF. - Michael McGimpsey
but Paul it is going to disappear - Facebook bought FF not for the site but for you guys. So obviously once its integrated into Facebook, development on FF will stop - Anthony Feint
If FriendFeed and all of it's functionality get integrated into Facebook I'm all for it. - Hugh Isaacs II
Thank you Paul! Congrats on the deal! - Garin Kilpatrick
Paul - that's great news. It surely can't cost a lot to keep this place running and it's a good place to try out ideas before they move to FB. - Martin Bryant
what about improving the product and making sure it gets more users, not only supports those who stay? - Ihar Mahaniok
Ihar - unlikely. Facebook bought FF for the developer talent, not for FriendFeed itself. - Martin Bryant from iPhone
Martin - I also think so, and it is most likely. But I could still have a hope - Ihar Mahaniok
Paul, please - underpromise & overdeliver...they say it works. - Отборнейший бред
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! (nice name for Facebook skunkworks) I'm sure everyone would love to see FriendFeed itself stay around, even if the innovations that happen are geared towards implementation at Facebook. Thanks for this note Paul! :) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
There are a few promises and guarantees that you SHOULD be able to provide. Like, that our network of friends will remain intact and that the features that make this site great will remain. If you can't make those promises, then you shouldn't have done the deal. I sure do hope that the real-time search engine wasn't the centerpiece of this deal (it probably was), because that certainly... more... - Brad Williamson
Paul you did such a nice job with friendfeed, and I so want to believe you, but I'm not sure I can. Not because of you, but because of your new employer. Because your new employer is no longer you, and while I have kind of come to trust you, I do not trust your new boss. Not at all. Please prove me wrong, if they'll let you. - Jim the Blatant
Paul - thanks for that reassurance. PLEASE stick to that! I was in the middle of reading and participating in a lengthy discussion off of a Robert Scoble post yesterday ... then I came up for air and saw your news. Congratulations - I have no idea what that feels like or how pumped you must be. There are so many things FF does that I LOVE...I know you know that. Please Please PLease dont' go away! Thanks! - Tobin Truog
Thanks for the personal note Paul. - Mike Reynolds
Phewww..relief ;-) - Ritu
First zombie/mafia request and we're all outta here.... - Fossil Huntress
+1 Fossil Huntress The partitioning of the networks between friendfeed and facebook was a major feature that many people made use of, lacking appropriate controls for who sees what. Merging the two groups of friends isn't going to work, at all. - Mr. Gunn
It doesn't sound like you understand what has people worried. I wrote this to help: http://friendfeed.com/brlewis... - Bruce Lewis
Maybe Bruce analysis is too imaginary, but the question is THE question nobody answered: why did you do it, Paul? - Luca Sofri
I left a response on Bruce's entry (http://friendfeed.com/brlewis...). I'll write more about this on my blog when I get some free time. - Paul Buchheit
Thanks. - Bonnie Foster
we all know what needs to happen. the question is, where? ... FB needs, - apart from being/it is, a large, general, open application platform, - 1. Smart keyboard shortkatze - and Im a kbsCzar to go to, 2. Aggregating facilities, smart /RSS/ .. 3. Full blogging facilities, capabilities, not 140 chars. 4. Full real time comments facilities, capabilities. 5. Real time, live, but ALSO... more... - pb:
I hope you're being open and honest with us. This time. :( - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Good to know , we´ll see :) - Yahya
Thank you! I am sure you will do great things at FB. I just hope that the great app you built here isn't destroyed. I don't know of any other aggregation app that I can embed into my site like this one! - beersage
Congratulations on your successes, best wishes for more. And thanks for continuing to look out for us loyal, addicted FFanatics! - Rob Schieber
I hope it continues, i'm a new user and absolutely love it (wish i knew the value of it before)! Congrats! - Luis D. Santos
and let me add second, obvious, "Facebook needs" - Friendfeed bookmarklet, and Friendfeed tools - widgets, embedding - real time and not - of posts, and groups ...to embedd, to inject oneself into this thing called Internet ..... so, if FB listens to FF engineering long enough, they are going to get it .. right - pb:
Paul, what I am worried is not that you're brainwashed, but that there's simply no business need for Facebook to improve FriendFeed from now on, period. - Ihar Mahaniok
I have confidence Paul. While some of the comments were probably uncalled for, covering an investment (of time and money) in these times to move on and hopefully provide even 'better stuff' makes sense to me. It's pretty obvious there are a LOT of people that don't want to 'lose' Friendfeed. (I wouldn't hold a town hall for a few weeks though :) - Charlie Anzman
Congrats, Paul. It's sad that people have to make these uncalled for hatred comments about Facebook though. Why can't both sites work together. I think Facebook will do better with FF and vise versa. Take the good features of both services. Don't boycott FB, enjoy it. I'm sick of the negative comments going on, that's all. :( - Mol, FF Music Lover
Because I don't think Paul and the other FF developers would allow FB to do anything. I'm sorry, I am not going to think negative here like some here are. I guess I'm a fangirl for FB. - Mol, FF Music Lover
Finally something about the changes on the horizon that isn't all d0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0om and whining. Thank you, Paul! :D - Christian (Simply X)
Paul, what about the content scam that FB T&C is, does it apply to Friendfeed now? Should we all start writing scripts to retroactively delete all content ever uploaded to Friendfeed? Elaborated a bit here - http://friendfeed.com/mbravo... - Michael Bravo
We know you'll try your best, Paul. But sometimes, you just can't win the dark side... - Winston Teo
Thanks Paul for all your efforts. Founders often want the best, but acquiring companies often have people with political/power issues or different/limited visions. - Mitchell Tsai
*throws a sheep at Paul* is that a good thing? - Joe from iPod
Yeahhhhhhh BOoooiiiiiiiii!!!!!!! - sofarsoShawn <Pop-Rocks>
yes, thank you, Sergeant Paul ... well, good to hear we go on ... because if not, how about starting www.anotherFeed.com ... or, www.Letsgofeed.com ...... anyway, lets boost blogging capabilities, post more than current amount of chars, lets have TOP POSTS / clicks count list at the head of each group, some stats, lets index group headers, lets have MORE keyboard shortcuts .. - now ...... more... - pb:

Our lawyers were wearing shorts actually -- no air conditioning at their office on Sundays I guess. - Paul Buchheit
Zuckerberg's the only one from FB who could be bothered to show up? - Andy Bakun
American big business such a formal affair - Robert Higgins
Contrary to popular misconception, lawyers don't actually enjoy wearing suits. Haul us into work on a Sunday, and we'll definitely be dressing comfortably. :) - Brian Chang

Congrats and best wishes for the future. - Jeff Stannard
For $50m you could at least have hired a photographer who doesn't shake so much. :) - Rodrigo Jaroszewski
FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money! - blackChinahand
I think the Tiger suit would have been more appropriate! But hey....shorts in a backyard is pretty cool too. - Drea Lester

I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge? - Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they? - Jesse Stay
Congratulations to all of you!! - Steve de Mena
The FB/FF deal rocks. Total win for users and developers. - Steve Gillmor

Congrats! The hard work paid off - Becca
Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us. - Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow. - Keith Pelczarski
No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Nicely put, guruvan. - Anne Bouey
What I wonder is ... a 50-million dollar deal and no one has a camera capable of taking a clear photo? :P - Nicholas Kreidberg
Congratulations - SteVe C
@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell. - Shane Gibbons
LOL! ♫ ♫ "ooh, take the money and run"!! ♫ ♫ ;) - Vincenzo Piromalli
Congratulations to everyone involved. Well done. - Darius Dunlap
This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed. - Colide81 (James) from iPhone

But Ahmed you are still being an ass about it, trying to rain on their good times. Go find a hole under the bridge where you belong. You can be sad and not have to come out all bitchy about stuff. Clear thoughtful comments instead of going all into "fuck you" mode. - Rasmus Lauridsen

I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form. - Paul Nash

Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. - - Mitchell Tsai

Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on. - Akiva
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook. - zio bonino
Near term future? - Kol Tregaskes
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook? - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck. - Jim the Blatant
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything. - zio bonino

Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed! - Alex Lomas

I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now. - ayca
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys. - Chieze Okoye

this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on... - Tate
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would. - Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook? - Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook. - Andy Bakun
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn. - Jeremy Buff

Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake. - Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything. - Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends! - Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother. - Don Faulkner from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good. - Ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr... - Kemal Y.
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms. - Don Faulkner from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline. - Ken Sheppardson
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly. - Don Faulkner from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff? - Flavio
Congratulations! - Sam Grover
rutgerblom, I don't expect they do either, thus my angst over this. - Don Faulkner from IM
if there's a team willing to do it and money, and if we accept some ads as everywhere else, we could make a new FF without FB - Flavio
I have worked hard in avoiding signing up for FB. Does this mean I now automatically will be on FB by virtue of my FF account? - Tony Vota from iPhone
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future. - Don Faulkner from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years. - Andy Bakun
Congrat Bret!! :)) - Cihan Cepni
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.) - Don Faulkner from IM
This almost confirms FF will disappear: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... - Kol Tregaskes

"Like" to follow this thread. Not because I like what happened. I'm horrified. FF could disappear now. - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Same here, Kamilah. - Tyson Key
If FriendFeed had invented the "don't like" button, today would have been the day to press it. - Vishal Verma
and I just bought BuddyFeed for my iPhone this weekend. :( - Don Faulkner from IM
Oh, joy, Facebook's privacy policy is upon us! - Joris
WTF?? NOOOOO!!! Why do such good things have to be ruined by greed? Screw Facebook, and goodbye Friendfeed. - Jason R. Hunter
congratulations! - Loic Le Meur
Facebook is lucky to have such a talented group of people ... Congratulations FriendFeed! - Rob Kurrus
doesn't look like a bad joke, better be for the good then, but... Well congrats anyway guys, you did something AWESOME now let's see where Mark takes it - Dobromir Hadzhiev
That's too bad. Liked the openness if FriendFeed, and the lack crap that is on Facebook. Once FriendFeed dies, it will be Twitter only. - Mike D.
Congrats, but concerned that FriendFeed and its tools may disappear. Merging the tools with Facebook seems impossible. - Mike Reynolds
Congrats guys (and gals) ! - Benjy Weinberger
So, what does the acquisition of FriendFeed by Facebook mean to us, users of both websites: Can I make a friend request from FriendFeed, and be approved for both, on one click - Reyna Carlos
Exciting news guys. I am actually looking forward to your collaboration with / work for FB. No matter what people may or may not like about FB, it does succeed in reaching a more "diverse" audience compared to most other Web 2.0/social web companies. Paired with your team's excellence in realizing features that succeed in pleasing the geekiest of Web 2.0 affine individuals, I think you are steering towards exciting waters :) - Mustafa K. Isik
*heart sinks* actually a bit of shock - I think that Facebook will leave Friendfeed as-is but I don't think there is hope for future innovation in Friendfeed since their best superstar team members will be pulled onto 'more important' Facebook issues... - Pon
:-) + :-( very happy for the team, huge achievement, hoping to see export of innovation but not a shut down of this unique community and location - Majento
Congratulations, and best wishes for your future together! :-) - Ruchira S. Datta
Wow, I was beginning to use Friendfeed as my defacto social site...Facebook is more for real life friends. They'll just take what makes Friendfeed great, add it to Facebook and slowly kill this site. - Manuel Mas
What is the big deal? I think it'll make FF bigger and better. You should be happy about that! - orionstarr
Somebody has to got pay for it. - orionstarr
I am disappointed. I don't want to have to go to Facebook to do what i do here. I can not imagine they will port over all the features we enjoy here. We lose a lot for only a slight benefit to Facebook. - Robert
It could be worse, myspace could've bought them lol... - orionstarr
Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for. - Rajit
Only just started taking a serious look at FF after hearing acquisition by FB. Sounds like I'm laggard rather than a leader in use of web 2.0 - ManojRanaweera
I think how Pon said it is what I'm feeling: *heart sinks*. - Andy Bakun
Congratulations, i am really happy for you guys!! :) - Mona Nomura
I'm not a Facebook fan, but can't begrudge the FF gang their chance to reap the rewards for all their hard work. However, it would be a shame if FB ruins the good thing we all have going here. - Ken Morley
Congrats to the FF team... I hope the service doesn't disappear into a fold of light and heat. - Brandon
if all the things that make FF great are brought to FB then I'll be happy to use it - Mike Chelen
The community won't be there. Been on FB longer than any other, don't have nearly the relationship or sense of community there that I do here or on Twitter. - Karoli
Karoli: that is due to the effectiveness of the FF platform and interface, which help to join conversations and find interesting people more so than FB does - Mike Chelen
Mike: I suspect that FB wants FF for the search possibilities, not the community-building aspects. But we'll see. - Karoli
i guess congrats are in order, but I'm going to now go and remove everything I have that feeds into FF, and I have to ask -- do I have any rights over my archive? I have a private feed, and I have no interest in offering up my lifestream to the FaceBook data-miners. I hope the FF folks get what they hope for out of the deal, but my FriendFeed experience has been effectively killed. - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
I just learned about the FF acquisition by Facebook - WOW~! Congratulations Bret, Paul and FF team!! holy cow ........Mooooooooo! Where's the FF Acquisition Party? :) - Susan Beebe
Friendfeed after Facebook http://ff.im/6q5EY - Ozgur Uckan
Wow thats cool! - AbZ from Nambu
RT @alirizaesin FriendFeed, R.I.P. Home tweet home!.. - Ozgur Uckan
Congrats to facebook. Now, Twitter is the best. - miocaro
Congratulations to the FriendFeed guys on the Facebook Acquisition. Not a big fan of Facebook, so I hope my favorite Uber Aggregator, Realtime Social, Microblogging site of awesomeness is not entirely absorbed into the Facebook infrastructure. I wait with baited breath to hear what "normally for the time being" means ;). - Tom Horn
Can I now have comments propagate in both directions as far as Facebook/Friendfeed is concerned? - Piaw Na
*checks date*. Damn .. not April 1st, must be for real. While I'm happy for the FF team, since I guess this is what they wanted (congrats guys!), I can't help but think this is the beginning of the end for a great service and a vibrant community. There are reasons I don't spend any time on Facebook and do spend lots of time on FF, and some kind of "FF integrated into Facebook" just won't cut it. I hope this service will live on for at least a few more years. - Andrew Perry
Gratz to the FF team but as a user I'm not completely happy. In short, I like the FF team/product much more than I like the FB team/product. Best of luck to all. - timepilot
Все, блядь, пиздец! - ✔ ǝuǝƃnǝ
WOW - very happy for all of you :-) - Kishore Balakrishnan
Bret, congrats on the acquisition. You guys put in a lot of hard work to create this community. I just hope you learned the mistakes Pownce made, Jaiku etc, and ensured that you didn't sell out your community, but that you helped it evolve into something as great as this into something better. Good luck in future endeavors! - Mike Lewis
Yay for you guys, I mean that seriously, I 'like' what this means for you personally, but -1000000 cool points for doing it with FB. Sad day. - Threepwood
Karoli: FF search is so useful because it is integrated with all the other great features that help to find relevant content. if FB wants to have a similar capability, they must also develop the underlying architecture. - Mike Chelen from IM
Sadness - yasin
Gimme my OPML export - Sriks7
Money is the root of all evil - Shakeel Mahate
shakeel, the reasons for friendfeed to join facebook are probably about other things besides money, since many of the FF staff left high-paying jobs to join in the first place - Mike Chelen from IM
Congrats, team! It's bittersweet, though. - Anne Bouey
So now we will have FriendFeed blocked at work too. Darn. - Mark Scrimshire
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future" is not exactly inspiring for the long term for those of us who came here to escape Facebook for a) it's walled garden and b) privacy concerns. Nice for the Founders to make a pile of cash but for the many of us, it feels like we got sold down the river. Sad. - Sally Church
This is tragic. Tragic. Tragic. - Ahsan Ali
cacarr: updates for FB have progressed rapidly in the past, count how many months since new features such as api calls and site redesigns have have been implemented - Mike Chelen from IM
Congratulation to the FF team! You guys deserves this. I just hope that Facebook does not change the directions of FF. - Vinko
congrats, I'm happy for friendfeed... - amelia arapoff
Congrats you guys, well deserved. - Shey
I hope this means better integration: liking here will auto-like on fb and such :D if that's the case, I won't mind the ads *wink* *wink* - Ac0n (former Franc)
Franc, cant stand facebook ads in their current format, hope they will be fixed eventually :P - Mike Chelen from IM
Grats, dont spend it all in one place..... - Robert Higgins

The Borg has struck. Alas. Prepare to be assimilated. (Will FB add my FF subscriptions to my FB friends list?) - Dennis Jernberg

Now that you guys have $$$ you should swap out the not so very pleasing default avatar! - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
BOO! Hiss! Mondays really do suck. - Dale
Congratulations to all the FriendFeed team. I hope you'll be able to keep the FriendFeed spirit up at Facebook. Kudos for all the great work you've been doing. - Paul Papadimitriou
Congrats and good luck.. - Can Koklu
Thanks for all the fish. Saving the so long... for now. - abacab
Goodbye FF, it was wonderful.. - Francesco Cugurra
I use FriendFeed and Facebook so it would be awesome to see FF features in Facebook. Congratulations! - krzychukula from IM
judging by the nearly 600 comments as i type this, including my own earlier one, FF could use a Don't Like button as well. or would, if we were going to be using it much longer. - kelly
Nice, i like to wish you all the best for your new job (and it's really hard, i know). I'm happy, but... don't let die FF!! - ''Ignobile''
Hope FriendFeed remains open. Love the spirit of FF - Bernaldo Barrena
Seriously, what a coincidence! Just on Saturday I claimed to be both twitter- and facebook-free. I loved FF product and personally helped to bring at least a dozen of my friends into the community. I'll stick around for a while though. - ✔ ǝuǝƃnǝ
This deal makes sense, now fb developers do not need to figure out how ff does it because they can just ask! Congrats facebook and ff! - Garin Kilpatrick
I suppose Facebook had to do it, with Twitter and Google Wave as competitor... - Alexander Kruel

Ok. I'll quit friendfeed, so. Goodbye. Ciao - valerio fiandra from iPhone
I am noticing a lot of people going to re-esumate their lifestream.fm account now! - Flavio
I don't think FB acquiring FF is bad. But I don't think it's good either. We'll see. :-) In the meantime, keep up the good work! - Alexander Gieg
How long until ex-FriendFeed employees start jumping ship from Facebook? I wonder... - Tyson Key
Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012. - Penny Power
:( Happy for FF people, sad for the service. Was going to move from fb to ff this week.. - Martynas
congrats! - Ronald
thts good!so i can workin both in my Fb online next - Arini dewi muchtaram
Flavio: never heard of lifestream.fm before, but I'm going to go check it out. I'll reiterate, though, that I'm now shy of any service like this, since it can disappear just as it's getting good. I heard about sweetcron.com last night (via http://ff.im/6pR2w). Maybe it's time to move from centralized to distributed again. - Don Faulkner
Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P - Don Faulkner
Must See - Hitler blows up over Facebook / FriendFeed - http://friendfeed.com/dffrnt... - Ahsan Ali
Dave, I'm not happy. That video gave me some much needed comic relief .. after waking up to this news. - Ahsan Ali
good for you, bad for us - Zachary Earl Strader
I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together. - Ru Viljoen
I don't understand why everyone is so negative about the situation? - orionstarr
@orionstarr - it's like Starbucks buying your neighborhood coffee shop and saying it still cares about the customers. You know it's just not going to be the same as what you've come to love. - Robin Barooah
Presumably FF will go on the back burner - and the team will try and "fix" Facebook. - Tim Tyler
sad, sad, sad. - scott willeke
Congratulations! That's huge. I hope all is well. - Juan Bruce
bad bad bad - kakilang
bye bye friendfeed! - Jonathan Crossland
Why-eee!!! ??? What next? - Wayne Lewis
I've watched Facebook morph from a relatively organised and well implemented social networking tool into the hulking mess it is now - and I really, really hope that a similar thing doesn't happen here with the inevitable changes this will bring about. - Leslie Moore
Come on guys, out with the long-term game plan, this is tedious. - Andrew Eglinton
NOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, I mean Cool. - sofarsoShawn <Pop-Rocks>
Teach Facebook how to be FriendFeed. Let the small but fast teach the big but slow. Don't forget what Paul says - don’t be evil. - whatidiscover
Friendfeed is not as huge as Facebook but you're doing such terrible work on it. Friendfeed is facing so many many problems these days though facebook doesn't seem to have one. Why? - Sing For Absolution
Never commented on this post. 2.5 years later, from a purely selfish persepective, the best thing that ever happened. It allowed me to drop out of the "Which social network is best", Scobilian crap and get down to the main reason I'm here... to communicate with my friends and share experiences. - Johnny
Funny. Two years later to the day, Rochelle took me to court to sign our temporary divorce papers. The day after my birthday in both cases. Huzzah! - Akiva
There's nothing new under the sun. - Micah from FFHound(roid)!
Matt Cutts
Congrats to Paul, Bret, and the whole FriendFeed gang. But I hope you bring a big shot of openness into the Facebook ecosystem, because it doesn't feel that way right now.
Exactly. - EricaJoy
Very sad day I think. - travispuk
Congrats! - Daniel Brusilovsky
+100 Matt - Jorge Escobar
congrats indeed, but damn, this seems like it's going to be bad :( - acedanger

NO Congrats or whatsoever "to Paul, Bret, and the whole FriendFeed gang. But I hope you bring a big shot of openness into the Facebook ecosystem, because it doesn't feel that way right now." Matt, dear! You Stole My Words! ROFL :)))) Just curious - is there anything more important than money? It seems NOT ROFLMAO - Lora Lufark
lots of truthiness in that statement. - Sushubh
I am sad. No congratulation at all. - bellegarde-webb
Besides being closed, Facebook has never adequately addressed serious privacy issues in its past. I strongly distrust them as a company and I'm sad to hear that they're gobbling up a service and a group of people I do trust. But if both services end up being elevated to FriendFeed's high standard then this will be a great day in hindsight. - Doug Beeferman
Well put doug, I feel same way: I trust FF, I dont trust FB. I'm skeptical this acquisition will change FB enough for me to trust it, but we'll see. - Evan Parker from Android
Facebook is a cult - Joe Dawson
Has anyone got an idea for a friendfeed alternative? - Ru Viljoen
Ru, I think Hellotxt.com might be a decent alternative to Friendfeed (it can also post to Friendfeed for you so you can keep your feed if you wish). I may start using it instead. Not sure. There's also identi.ca which claims to be adding more features for cross-posting. They use the Opensource Laconi.ca platform - PurpleZoe
thx for suggestions but looks like those are both exclusively microblogging platforms. - Ru Viljoen
no congrats, but I agree with the rest. - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Identi.ca is mostly a microblog (I hear cross-posting networks should be enabled soon), but Hellotxt.com is a lifestream (you can cross-post and etc across networks) I believe. Unfortunately it's slow at times. I'll miss Friendfeed if it gets sucked into the Facebook network, instead of remaining a stand-alone app. Not at all happy about the acquisition. - PurpleZoe
3 other possibilities: lifestream.fm, Socialthing.com and possibly Streamy.com - PurpleZoe
Now might be a good time for socialthing to exit private beta and enter public - Ru Viljoen
Agreed. - PurpleZoe
Paul Buchheit
Paul, we'd all love it if you'd tell us how long we can keep using FF as is. A lot of the bitching and whining might stop. - iTad
Wow that was fast ! - Susan Beebe from iPhone
I second Tad as will several hundred others, you created a mob engine and now you have to answer to it. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
feel sorry for this acquision - kang
Congrats on the acquisition, y'all! - Adam Barker
If Friendfeed's a "sharing service", how about sharing thoughts about its future with its users? ;) - Jack&Cleo
Paul we are really glad that you are making money with your fantastic product. Congratulations. We are just a bit concerned that Facebook will integrate more feeds and real time search and leave the community in the dust. - Keith - @tsudo
Jack++ - Tanath
v. awesome! congrats paul and company! - zhanna
If I'm not mistaken, this brings Mark's collection of 2003 Googlers very near completion. ;) Congrats, guys. - Jared Jacobs

Seriously... share some info that this community can value. We know you guys are diggin' all this, but, as far we can tell, we're all about to be divorced from each other. We need details, TODAY! - Brad Williamson

Robert Scoble
Oh, FriendFeed is now Facebook’s “official” R&D department! - http://scobleizer.com/2009...
My reactions to today's news! - Robert Scoble
SCOBLE YOU MUST GET THEM TO KEEP FRIENDFEED PURE-- and RUNNING!! AAAGGGH [ i just heard 5 minutes ago. I'm on vacation ] :) - Schneider Mike
Interesting thoughts. - Angus Burton
Bummer - not likely to be an improvement - Gail Gardner
Friendfeed is no longer .. all that's left is the flick of the switch. - John Blanton
It's nice for the FF peeps. They'll see what it's like to deliver new features for a decent size user base. - mrshl
Mike: I wouldn't worry about FriendFeed. I see it as Facebook's R&D department now. We're the test bunnies for what 300 million people will get! :-) - Robert Scoble
Now Friendfeed will be able to go head to head with Google wave! So long as the team are allowed to lead from within Facebook how can this possibly be bad? - Ade Lack
I want a FB test bunny t-shirt ;) - Jeff (Team マクダジ )
Nice comments. Also looking forward to realtime search and 300M+ users ... watch that in realtime! My screen will melt I guess. - Peter van Teeseling
I'm only really sad because it completely breaks my on-line life. I'm excited for the FF team and for FB but that's only one aspect and I don't see how it can be merged. - James Myatt
I think it'll make fan pages even cooler. - Gus
Mark: can you verify that this is a real account somehow? Tell us something about what we did in Davos together that I didn't share. - Robert Scoble
Robert, the user name for Zuck misspells his name, just like he misspelled yours. - Louis Gray
Mark, if that is really you. Please don't let people on FB find users on FF. Some of us are looking for the anti-social web. Private groups and no friend requests from long lost classmates was a big plus over here. - Chip Ramsey
Username is "markzukerberg"? .. - Mads Kristiansen
Robert: from what I can tell most FF users do not share your enthusiasm or optimism. From what I can see FriendFeed team members will be absorbed into Facebook R&D, FriendFeed as a property will whither and most will cash out as soon as they can. Do you have some other information that you can share that supports your optimism? - Brian Sullivan
My reactions to today's news! ~ http://ff.im/6pPEE :D - CannonGod
One of the worst things for me is that many employers, including the site I'm working at, block Facebook, but not Friendfeed. - James Myatt
James - www.anonymizer.com/ ? - Jeff (Team マクダジ )
How does everyone know what's going to happen? I prefer Rob's tone of "what should happen" - fear vs possibility - Ankush Narula from iPhone
Really interesting perspective you provide here. I was thinking this whole time that this would hit Twitter hard, but I see now that Google might be the real target, because of the whole real-time search. Nonetheless, I love all the Google employees that are hoping facebook becomes more "open" in the process. Something tells me facebook doesn't care about being open, but being a... more... - Rahul Krishnakumar
Christopher: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... It clearly seems that facebook will use friendfeed to be a playground for future features. - Rahul Krishnakumar
Wait I owe Scoble an apology. I read several places that he had a financial interest in Friend Feed. That information , if true, clouded my perception of his commentary of FF. If you believed that true, he comes across as a shill trying to protect his investment IMHO. In his blog post he denounces any financial connection. Now I feel stupid because good practices dictate that he would have disclosed such in his writings. I suck sorry Robert. - cheapsuits from iPhone
Hmmm - I keep my FB social, private, and mainly family. I keep FF public and work-oriented only. Will I need two accounts? Or just delicate messing about with privacy controls? I'm not looking forward to shifting - may FF last a long while still. FB is too busy, and FF is lightweight and gives me exactly what I want, with a much cleaner interface. Thanks very much Robert, your blog post is much appreciated! - Allyson Lister
Robert, how can you say you don't get how FF users are sad and up in arms? FB's attitudes and culture are different enough for this to be a serious shock. In short, lots of people think FF=good, FB=bad, for better or worse. Your own list of cons is enough to get FF users up in arms. - Don Faulkner
Christopher I see it now. Easy to see what he said when it isn't filtered by FF haters. What more can I say then I suck? I surely am not going to kill myself over it. - cheapsuits from iPhone
Thrilled for Paul, but amused that FB's first big land grab is another biz that isn't monetized properly either! Arrogance or Ignorance? - Jan Simmonds
Jan, FF has some great technology and some great people. It's not about the service itself. - James Myatt
Here's why people are up in arms: I think it's in the company's best interests to keep the properties existing separately ... especially since like you said, it's a geekier community on FF. Why not integrate the cool *features* FF has within Facebook but keep friendfeed.com as-is? - Tamar Weinberg
I agree this is more of a play against Google. I think eventually Twitter and Facebook will team up more to provide real time streams of user updates between the two systems. I wonder if the first step is using FF for the collection of these streams and the next step is acquiring the method of pushing these streams or content. - CodeSamurai
FF = Facebook Labs - Andrew
I like the separate sites and maybe they will allow both options, Facebook is too busy for me and Friend Feed cuts to the chase and I hope we don't see "FaceFeed" with everything combined without options. - MedicalQuack
They got some talented people at FriendFeed. - Kenneth Yeh
