Why can't we watch the Olympics without downloading Microsoft Silverlight?? Anyone know?

no cluez, sorry. i downloaded silverlight to watch Obama's swearing in, and haven't thought anything about it since then, :(

Just confusing why it's mandatory to download something... Maybe I should check UStream...

It's probably a deal the broadcasters have with Microsoft. They give Microsoft Technlogy Partner status and this is what comes of it.

Kinda ironic that you suggest Ustream... you had to *install* Flash at some point too. Flash is so commonplace that people rarely realize it's a plugin just like Silverlight.

Maybe Silverlight does live video better? I know it looked pretty smooth in the 2008 Olympics.

Netflix also uses Silverlight for there instant streaming movies

Netflix uses Silverlight? Good to know... Perhaps I should just go ahead and download it then. I don't know anything about plugins... I've just gotten away from downloading things in general.

silverlight's streaming is superior to just about anyone else's.
